RD15742. GER Wisbech & Upwell Tramway No.7. by Ron Fisher Via Flickr: RD15742. One of the most interesting carriages in the North Norfolk Railway's vintage train is this Great Eastern Railway bogie composite No.7 built for the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway in 1884. Sister carriage No.8 found fame in the 1952 Ealing Comedy 'The Titfield Thunderbolt', but its fame was short lived as it came to a sticky end when it was derailed by the baddies( Pearce and Crump who ran the local bus service) and it crashed down an embankment. It had been fitted with a bar so that Mr. Valentine, the rich old soak that had financed the purchase of the line from BR, could get a drink without waiting for the pubs to open. No.7 has been fitted out with a bar in a similar fashion. Sheringham, North Norfolk, Wednesday, 23rd August, 2017. Copyright © Ron Fisher.

tramway coaches i guess
Tumblr media
i meant to reply to @sudrian-railways-enthusiast about these tags in the comments but somehow my response spiralled into a full-blown post on HCs for minor coach characters
"the old ones with nothing to lose... and Henrietta"
So, I hesitated on how to word that section! Because my first thought had been that the coaches that were more reckless and "awkward" were very likely to be elderly coaches relegated to workmen's services, as that seems to basically be the last leg of the life journey for them... assuming they get that far. In other words, IRL some of those coaches are janky but since they're usually quite old that's not much surprise. In sentient vehicle world, I like to think they're cranky, they've come down a long way in the world (unwashed laborers! eurgh!!), they probably have some Emotions, and what they don't have left are any fucks to give.
But I also knew Henrietta had definitely done some Unauthorized Creeping About, so I had been planning to make a special mention of her all along. But when it came down to writing that sentence, it was awkward. She's a special case! Because she does seem to literally fit the profile I wrote above... but she's not that type. For one thing, she has far from "nothing" to lose! She may primarily transport workers to and from the quarry but for her it's not a last lonely stopgap before the scrapyard; she has a home, friends; she's loved; she does all sorts of special jobs; she and Toby are multi-generational local celebs and they are in no disgrace or danger.
Hannah... hahaha(nnah)... I admit, I wrote that post not wanting to touch her. She gives me a fair bit of trouble in headcanons because you would think that if Henrietta still had a sister after all this time there would be a lot of explanation and backstory and probably angst to unpack? Like what?? Where did she come from??? I agree, just looking at TVS the best explanation is that Hannah was scrounged up and refurbished largely as a backup for Henrietta (and omg, the ISSUES with that dynamic???? this hasty hot-blooded creature as the frustrated understudy? but they both survived the scrapper's torch, so that makes it... okay? but also, not? hmmm...)
If we try to combine TVS and RWS, though (as I do!), I feel we need to do something else with Hannah. Because there is no way to reconcile Victoria's existence if Sodor owns Hannah? Like I'm not one to think that everything on this disaster-gay-energy of a railway has to be matchy-matchy but it's almost cruel for them to have been like, "Ahhhh, yes. Henrietta needs some help. Where shall we get it? ... *crickets* ... Well, we'll kick that can down the road and see what comes up." Completely ignoring Henrietta's underused and clearly bored SISTER just chilling on a seldom-used siding.
Even as I type this, I realize we could just say that Hannah's disposition is Too Much to handle that gig full-time—Toby seems stressed out whenever he has to go near her for even a day or two. But for my money, I like to ID Hannah as the Upwell and Wisbech coach No. 8, the one who appeared in Titfield Thunderbolt! It definitely seems consistent with her "hasty" and adrenaline-seeking character! Also, remember that canonically Toby and Henrietta (and Elsie! I am categorically against Elsie Erasure 😤) are from an Upwell-and-Wisbech-esque line but explicitly NOT from that one. In other words, it facilitates the two sisters having always worked separately back on the mainland, which seems to fit the rather distant relationship they have in the show.
This also facilitates, in this timeline, Hannah being preserved but not owned by the North Western. That helps me a lot so far as her coexistence with Victoria. In this headcanon I'd say that the North Western put off the issue of Toby's overloaded train for as long as possible because they were trying to buy Hannah. Finally they could put it off no longer and, anyway, it was clear that Hannah's railway (I haven't decided which heritage line she works, but it's one of them) wasn't going to part with her. This makes more sense to me than the explanation in the book that? the North Western? couldn't afford a single new coach no matter how pressing the need?? but they could afford to restore a converted garden house into running condition (not really any cheaper I reckon)??? And then at the end FC3 is showing off the train like it's an attraction??? I dunno, I don't buy any of it, the NWR is doing plenty well enough to get any coach they want. That they put it off because they wanted Hannah works for me. And Victoria wasn't some convenient random find; she was probably on FC3's radar for a while and was the Next Best Option for some local vintage flavor.
That said, you can still rescue the Hannah episodes, too, by saying sometimes she is loaned to the NWR. And since she only works about 25 days a year and never breaks 10 mph otherwise, you'd better believe she makes the most of her spells on Sodor! Yee-haw! C'mon, Jim-boy, is this really as fast as you can go?????????
Bonus: If Hannah had been preserved after Titfield Thunderbolt as planned... perhaps she's appeared in some movies since?... she's a career actress. Throw in a little diva-with-a-heart-of-gold energy and just, honestly, I'm loving this.
As for Victoria... okay, so it seems to me that, immediately prior to being withdrawn from service on the Ffarquhar, she DOES fit my profile for "unhappy, ornery coach, disgusted at how far she's fallen in the world, who might act out." Think about it—she had been sent away from Albert and Helena (that had already been her first "demotion," mind you—but she seems to have been very happy with her little found family in that era), sent over to the No-Where Railway, is in exile now on the most godforsaken western line on this barbarous island? She doesn't know how Albert and Helena are, the early N.W.R. is a mess, there's no tourism, she's reduced to having 'Coffee Pots' play pass-the-parcel with her as smelly miners and masons and construction workers grind dirt and ash into her upholstery and make a ruin of her floors, and with each new bit of grime it seems any hope she has of ever being wanted back home grows dimmer—
So, maybe she acted out? I mean yes, she seems very sweet, and I'm sure by nature she is, but these are also the exact sort of circumstances I'd predict "truck-like behavior."
She had to have been withdrawn before 1925, or else Thomas should have recognized her, so that was relatively early, and maybe she was one of the first picks to be replaced once the railway started getting their grubby paws on a few better coaches—because she had gotten into the habit of being a bit of a pill.
I know, I know that when Chris Awdry had Edward say "Don't I know you from somewhere?" that he meant to imply the answer was "yes, from their mutual Furness days." But the F.R. timeline actually works out such that these two probably never worked the same line. So I, guilt-free, prefer to interpret it as Edward vaguely recognizes her, and it takes him another minute or two for him to realize that it's from their early Sodor days.
So then he keeps his mouth shut and never brings it up again. Because it would be a very Edward thing, to a) remember that she had gotten a bad reputation on the island, and to b) realize that he's probably the only other living thing that would know this, and c) to reckon that after 75 years off the rails, she has more than paid the price for any difficulty she once gave, and that she deserves the chance to make a fresh start.
Which, obviously, Victoria grabbed onto it with all six wheels and never let go. She is clearly a homebody by nature so, now that she knows that this is the only home she has, it makes sense to me that any brief "I'm going to make my problems everyone's problem" phase is long over.
Still... imagine how pleased Henrietta and Elsie were, after containing their Creeping About tendencies for a while, feeling that this pleasant newcomer would crimp their style, to discover... haha no worries. She is perfectly prepared to keep their secrets. She may even chip in a trick or two of her own...
#on twitter victoria is pretty widely loathed i really don't get why she's fine#i prefer her in this role to hannah#she is given a distinct personality but she's in no danger of overshadowing or capsizing the mild steady dynamic of the Toby Train... she j#mind you there is literally no bigger 'third wheel' in the world than tagging along behind toby and henrietta haha#but then elsie's been doing this for decades and decades and surely likes having a new friend to do it with her...#mind you hannah is a FUN character but she is A Bit Much for the ffarquhar#i really do like the idea of her blowing on through every year or two on a whirlwind visit#like a crazy rich cousin who doesn't live with you and that's probably for the best but they always brighten up the room#the parents don't approve but the kids are like 'HEY AUNTIE WHAT NEW FORBIDDEN THING YA GONNA TEACH US ABOUT THIS TIME'#anyway going back to arguing with invisible composite twitterati#the problem is not that victoria got too much air time the only problem is that the other RWS coaches didn't!#the solution is not to tear down but to build up#... and as everyone comments TVS helped there so what's the problem?#(i'm not as enthusiastic about CGI annie clarabel and henrietta as everyone else seems to be)#(they seem as flat as ever to me)#(but hey at least they have lines and agency ig)#ttte coaches#ttte vehicle autonomy#<- i should go back and use this tag in a few places...#ttte analysis#ttte headcanon#ttte#the railway series

Thomas and Friends Headcanons (The Famous Eight)
NWR #1-Thomas Billinton
Basis: LB&SCR E2 w/ extended side tanks
Designer: L.B. Billinton
Buildplace: Brighton, East Sussex, England
Backstory: Thomas was one of the last E2's to be designed. Built on September 1, 1915, he would first work as a station pilot. During this time, he was painted in the LB&SCR's black livery with red lining. His number was #106. He came to Sodor during WW1 due to a shortage of tank engines on the island.
Tumblr media
NWR #2-Edward Stewart-Pettigrew
Basis: heavily modified FR K2
Designer: W.F. Pettigrew
Buildplace: Springburn, Glasgow, Scotland
Backstory: Edward was one of the first K2's. Built on July 12, 1896, he would work for 9 years as an express engine near his build site before working in Cumbria until 1915, when he was sent to Sodor. During this time, he was painted in the FR's indian red livery with vermillion and black lining. His number was #37. Like Thomas, he came to Sodor due to a growing need for express engines.
Tumblr media
NWR #3-Henry Gresley-Stanier
Basis: LNER A1/C1 hybrid (formerly) LMS Stanier Class 5 "Black 5" (currently)
Designer: Sir Nigel Gresley (old shape) Sir William Stanier (new shape)
Buildplace: Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England (old shape) Crewe, Cheshire, England (new shape)
Backstory: Around April 13, 1919, Henry was built from stolen blueprints of Sir Nigel Gresley by an unknown locomotive builder who held a grudge against Gresley. He hadn't realized that the blueprints were for an experimental locomotive. By the time he did, Henry had already been built. Along with many other problems, he had a small firebox, making him a poor steamer. The builder decided to sell Henry to the first available buyer, which was Sir Topham Hatt I. Due to his desperation for locomotives, Sir Topham Hatt had no choice but to keep Henry. When Henry arrived, he was painted in a special green livery with red stripes and had no number.
Tumblr media
NWR #4-Gordon Gresley
Basis: LNER A1 Pacific
Designer: Sir Nigel Gresley
Buildplace: Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England
Backstory: Gordon was an experimental prototype for the A1 class, nicknamed the A0, built on February 20, 1922. Unlike his brothers and sisters, he was never given a number and only went out for test runs. He was sent to Sodor the next year due to the growing NWR's need for a premier express engine. When he arrived, he was painted in LNER black.
Tumblr media
NWR #5-James Hughes
Basis-Modified L&YR Class 28
Designer: George Hughes
Buildplace: Horwich, Greater Manchester, England
Backstory: James was an experimental Class 28 with an extended pony truck and 5 ft 6 in driving wheels. Built on October 3, 1912, he worked for 12 years as a mixed-traffic engine. During this time, he was painted in the L&YR's black livery with red and white lining. His number was 52529. He was sent to Sodor to help with both passengers and freight.
Tumblr media
NWR#6 Percival 'Percy' Avonside
Basis-GWR Trojan prototype
Designer: Avonside Engine Company
Buildplace: St. Phillip's, Bristol, England
Backstory: Percy was an experimental prototype of the GWR Trojan. At some point in his life, he received Hunslet components. Built on June 3, 1900, he worked for the GWR for 25 years as a station pilot. During this time, he was painted in the GWR's Middle Chrome Green livery with yellow lining. Soon after, he was put in a workshop, where he was bought by Sir Topham Hatt and sent to Sodor.
Tumblr media
NWR #7-Tobias 'Toby' Holden
Basis- GER Class C53/LNER Class J70
Designer: James Holden
Buildplace: Stratford, London, England
Backstory: Toby was one of the last C53's built. Built on September 15, 1914, he would work at the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway as a mixed-traffic engine. He was numbered 62553. One summer in 1951, Sir Topham Hatt I, along with his wife, Lady Hatt, and grandchildren Bridget, Stephen, and Gerald, went to East Anglia for a holiday, and met Toby on the tramway. They liked him a lot, and the feeling was mutual. Later, when Thomas got in trouble, Sir Topham Hatt remembered Toby and brought him from his old railway after it had closed down. When Toby arrived on Sodor, he was painted in the LNER's brown livery with black sideplates with yellow LNER lettering on them.
Tumblr media
NWR #8-Montague 'Duck' Collett
Basis-GWR 5700 Class

Thomas Headcanons: Toby
Tumblr media
Toby is specifically BR #68221, which was built in June 1914 as GER #127, and later renumbered LNER #7127 (and latterly LNER #8221). In real life, this engine was withdrawn from service in May 1951, and scrapped shortly afterwards. Needless to say, that’s what I have as the month in which Toby was purchased by the NWR.
Okay, this one is technically part of the proper canon, but as it was never made explicit within the stories, I think it’s acceptable to include here.
Toby was originally employed as a dockyard shunter at Great Yarmouth docks, alongside at least two of his siblings. He ended up being the longest serving of the three, as the other two were transferred elsewhere in 1930, and replaced by larger Y10 Sentinels.
It was during this period that the events of Toby’s Seaside Holiday took place, but it’s not canonically known exactly when these events happened. Our only clue is that it’s pre-1946, as all the engines shown are still carrying their original LNER numbers. Obviously it’d have to be pre-war as well, so my headcanon is that this story happens during the summer of 1939.
Although they only met briefly a few times during this period, Toby also happened to know Molly, who sometimes visited Great Yarmouth on services from King’s Lynn, in between her Royal duties. Toby’s the only other current NWR engine who knows of this connection, but for the sake of Molly’s privacy he’s never told anyone else.
Shortly after the War, Toby was transferred to the tramway we saw him on in his introduction. Although it very much resembles the Wisbech & Upwell line, it was in fact located in a different part of East Anglia - nobody’s quite sure exactly where. It was on this line that Toby met Henrietta for the first time, as she’d already been working on the line with another tram engine, who’d just been transferred elsewhere. By then, the tramway had officially lost its passenger service, but Toby grew so fond of Henrietta that he managed to pull some strings to keep her in service.
The tramway had previously had another larger coach, Hannah, but she’d been sold on by the time Toby arrived. This is my theory as to why, when Hannah arrived on Sodor years later, Henrietta seemed to remember her, but Toby didn’t.
When Toby and Henrietta entered NWR service in June 1951, they also brought with them a luggage van by the name of Elsie, who’d also worked with them on their old tramway. At some point afterwards, she was partly converted to serve as a road van - that is, a guard’s van with additional space for consignments of goods that don’t warrant their own wagon. This conversion also allowed Henrietta’s own guard’s compartment to be removed, which in turn allowed a slight boost to her passenger capacity.
Despite his number, Toby was not the seventh steam engine to arrive on the NWR - there having been a good twenty or so engines before him. He wasn’t even the first engine to carry the number, as it’d previously been worn by one of the old Coffee Pots then still working on the tramway to Anopha Quarry. This had been withdrawn and scrapped just before Toby’s arrival, leaving the number free for him to inherit.
As has been established previously, the NWR's numbering scheme has always been very relaxed - so much so that the order in which the engines are numbered bears almost no relation to the order in which they actually arrived.
Toby arrived in very much the same shabby condition that he’d been in when his old tramway closed, and it wasn’t until some time later that he was actually sent to Crovan’s Gate to be fully repaired and repainted. Indeed, he was actually on his way there when James infamously ran into some tar wagons, hence why he happened to be on hand to help (presumably Percy was giving him a boost, hence why he was there as well).
Whereas someone like Edward might take a kinder, more patient approach to helping inexperienced engines, Toby is very much hands off when it comes to the same thing. He’ll offer advice and guidance up to a  certain point, but beyond that, he insists on leaving the engine in question to learn for themselves - even if this leads to them making mistakes which he has to sort out.
Toby’s relationship with Henrietta remains as strong as ever, and indeed it’s developed to the point where they act just like an old married couple. Unfortunately, that also means they sometimes bicker like one: The one thing Toby can’t stand about Henrietta is her need to constantly remind him about something he has to remember, or recommend courses of action that he intended to take anyway. This occasionally causes the pair to lose patience with each other, but fortunately, Toby’s work in the quarry allows him to work off his frustrations, and he’s usually able to apologize and make amends afterwards.

Pete the Tram Engine
Tumblr media
NAME: Pete Arvida GENDER: Cis-Male (He/Him) ORIENTATION: Straight AFFILIATION: - Sodor Tramways (1885-1914) - North Western Railway (1914-1934) - Independent (1934-1955) BASIS: GER Class G15 0-4-0T EYE COLOUR: Green YEAR BUILT: 1885 YEAR ARRIVED: 1885
One of the original trio of Tram Engines purchased from the Great Eastern Railway, Pete is quite the mystery to the others. A highly principled engine known to say very few words, he’s the problem-solver of the line - anything that needs to be done but the others can’t do is often delegated to be his responsibility, not that he minds of course. He enjoys the simple intrinsic value of his work, and doesn’t make much fuss about it. He values loyalty above all else, especially when it comes to his brothers, and isn’t above making it well known that he’d stand by them in even the worst of times, no matter the weather. Unfortunately, this tends to mean trouble for all of them, whether he likes it or not…
---
And here is the second profile for the original Great Waterton Tramway, Pete! Truth be told, there isn't much else to say about him, as the original tram engines of the line are very much a foot-note in SIR. He and his brothers evaded withdrawal in the 30s by going on the run, and Pete was scrapped in the 50s when he chose to stay behind with his siblings on the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway after finally reconnecting with them.

One thing I love about the Sonic movie is they drew from one of the most obtuse and bscuore sources possible, the in-game map from the 8-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog, as the basis for the depiction of Sonic’s planet. It was actually this moment at the very start of the game that gave me confidence that this movie was going to be a lot better than I expected.
