realizing I forgot to post extensively about when I was in Manchester/Liverpool
I visited for 3-4 days, partially to say hi to my friend, partially because I never do anything and wanted to try traveling on my own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pros:
People are chatty and nice, beautiful architecture, I was in an extremely gay and leftist part of Manchester, I had the most delicious chicken wings I've ever had, my hotel room was on part with a studio apartment. If you visit Manchester, I highly recommend staying in the Whitworth Locke
Cons:
Horrible tap water and the pound is high as all hell.
Don’t go into Spar.
-
On my first day I went to the Manchester Museum which has such a beautiful taxidermy section. The liger/tigon taxidermy was so realistic I tapped into a genuine caveman fear that it was going to come alive and eat me

Sunday Monday Tuesday
The last three days have certainly had their ups and downs.
We left RHB and on arriving at Scarborough for our train to Manchester, my sister Helen rang to say she was in hospital with a bowel blockage. Golfing holiday over and seemingly related to previous extensive and life threatening surgery a few years ago.
Miraculously, by Monday night she was discharged from Royal Edinburgh Infirmary and by Tuesday the holiday reinstated.
It looked dire for a while but thank goodness things look ok now.
We had only one night in Manchester and didn’t get to see much of the city. However, the hotel - Whitworth Locke - was excellent. Very funky vibe and great coffees. Best coffee art ever!!!
On Monday we flew to Florence via Amsterdam. This was a second day where Jenny was able to be largely off her feet. However, even the relatively short walk from the T2 tram stop at Santa Maria Novella to our AirBnB at Via Del Servi near the Duomo was painful. It could have been worse, but we only had one suitcase as mine didn’t leave Amsterdam and is still there with no immediate news of it being found and returned. I know it’s there because it has an Air Tag, but nothing I can do but buy a few essentials and pray!
Suffice to say that with Jenny’s foot/mobility limitations and having no change of clothes, toiletries etc, a fair degree of misery set in.
Fortunately this wasn’t written contemporaneously and we did manage to see quite a bit today (Tuesday).
We managed to get to our Uffizi Tour and get a wheelchair, which was essential. It was a 9:00 tour of 2 hours. We wandered further after that and had an early lunch at the coffee shop.
There is no doubt about the fact that it is an amazing collection with an incredible history. Jenny managed to walk down to Pont Alla Grazie, along the Arno to the Pont Vecchio and back up to the Duomo through busy and lovely shopping, where I bought sox, underwear, T-shirts and toothbrush. At least I have something to different to wear now.
There is so much to see and do - we aren’t going to be able to do it justice, but I am hopeful than we can at least enjoy some of what this city has to offer. For example, we had a very pleasant pasta meal at our “local” in the Via Del Servi last night and a Prosecco with deserts on the way back this afternoon. Thanks for the inspiration there David and Rose.
Had a nap to catch up on last night’s disturbed sleep and sat out on our terrace drinking wine, eating chips and soaking up the sight and Sound of the Duomo. All very atmospheric.
Have gone from considering chucking in the towel this morning to hoping that we can enjoy some of the delights Florence has to offer.

Deansgate Locks
30.12.19
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So today I took a stroll around Deans-gate Locks to get a true feel of the space. After all the research and demographics of deansgate and Whitworth Street, I needed to see what the space was like first hand; unfortunately I had no chance to see it before Christmas. Although the streets are a little quieter than other parts of Manchester, with the station about the Locks and a lot of street traffic. The atmosphere here differentiates so much to Marple!
Although both locations are on Canal’s and listed brick buildings they have so many differences and similarities.
Back to the Feasibility Report Layout and tidying up the context ready for the deadline!!

Whitworth Locke, Manchester: hotel review
The grand 19th-century buildings of this aparthotel and co-working space reflect the city’s past while offering a vision of future city-centre hotels
Like a swollen river, Manchester city centre is breaching its banks. Property money is flooding in and central Manchester is being redrawn, as unprofitable, arty activity is swept out into Salford. Ancoats, to the east is being reinvented as an (oddly sterile) neighbourhood of indie bars and restaurants and swanky flats, while Oxford Road – a drab student corridor – promises, as the waters recede, to emerge as a green hub of tech-entrepreneurship.
Who benefits from all those cranes on the skyline is a point so moot it will be one for historians to discuss, not travel journalists. But any immediate pluses come with caveats. Juries are out. At street level, this city is as gritty as ever.

Grzywinski+Pons Infuses the Whitworth Locke Hotel with a Classic Yet Contemporary Charm
New York-based design studio Grzywinski + Pons does it again with their interior design magic touch with Locke Living’s latest hotel, the Whitworth Locke in Manchester, United Kingdom. Similar to the hospitality brand’s other two hotels, the Leman Locke and the Eden Locke, the Whitworth Locke balances classic and contemporary design in a beautifully understated way that seemingly only Grzywinski+Pons can execute.
The Whitworth Locke is composed of 160 studios and one-bedroom suites, a bar, cafe, lounge, and co-working space, all housed inside a 19th century cotton mill made up of three linked buildings. Grzywinski+Pons executed a complete gut renovation but still retained the solid bones and beauty of the Victorian structure. A tonal color palette of muted pinks, greens, blues and yellows add a contemporary, inviting warmth to various spaces.
Natural light streams through the glass atrium that houses The Conservatory, the pop-up bar that brings together guests from the Whitworth Locke’s three buildings with a menu of hand-selected wines, craft beer and inventive cocktails.
Throughout the public spaces and guest rooms of the hotel, you can find quiet vignettes like the one above that speak to Grzywinski+Pon’s signature design style of creating intimate and understatedly elegant spaces.
What: The Whitworth Locke Hotel Where: 74 Princess St, Manchester M1 6JD, UK How much? Rooms start at approximately $97 per night. Highlights: It’s hard to believe that this used to be a 19th century building before it underwent a complete gut renovation by Grzywinski+Pons to become the modern hotel it is today. Design draw: Grzywinski+Pons’s signature style of muted colors, elegant spaces, and artful balance of classic and contemporary design shines throughout both the public and private spaces of the hotel. Book it: Visit The Whitworth Locke Hotel
