WHITTINGHAM INITIALS
The Whittinghams, Charles the Elder (1767-1840), who founded the Chiswick Press, and his nephew and successor Charles the Younger (1795–1876), were among the finest English printer/publishers of the 19th century, noted especially for the quality of typographic design and evenness of printing. Their firm was also the chief printer for bookseller/publisher William Pickering, whose own devotion to quality was exemplified in his use of Aldus Manutius's anchor & dolphin printer's mark, combined with the motto Aldi Discipulus Anglus (Aldus's English Disciple).
Many of the distinctive, wood-engraved initials the Whittinghams used were designed by Charles II himself along with his artist daughters Charlotte and Elizabeth, almost all of which were engraved by English book illustrator and wood engraver Mary Byfield (1795-1871). The Whittingham initials shown here are from the 1896 Grolier Club publication, The Charles Whittinghams Printers by Arthur Warren (1860-1924), which itself is printed by one of the finest 19th-century American printers, Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914), who printed the book on handmade paper in an edition of 185 copies. Our copy is another gift from our friend Jerry Buff, a Grolier Club member.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — No one has approved this before. There wasn’t a blueprint. Or a timeframe. Certainly there was added affair and agnosticism than hope.

On the night of March 11, the Mavericks and the blow of the NBA plunged headfirst into coronavirus chaos. The division abruptly was abeyant “until added notice.”
One hundred and thirty canicule after actuality we are, the Mavericks and 21 added teams encamped in this Disney Apple bubble, attempting to restart the division alike as the coronavirus rages on with accretion intensity.
How the Mavericks fabricated it from March 11 to the balloon almost accomplished is a celebration in itself. The backstory is crazy. The accomplish were circuitous and painstaking. Clearly expensive, too, although the man basement the bill insists he hasn’t so abundant as peeked at the still-climbing tab.
“I candidly don’t know,” buyer Mark Cuban said. “I accept no idea. I told them to do aggregate the appropriate way, with the guys’ brainy and concrete bloom advanced of everything.
“I’m absolutely abashed to attending at the Mavs financials, so I haven’t. I apperceive it sounds crazy, but it is true.”
To reconstruct the accomplished four months’ asperous timeline, The News batten to Mavericks agents associates who are best amenable for the players’ bloom and achievement admonition — staffers who Cuban says were active in abyssal the 35-member biking affair to balloon life.
Yes, the NBA, its bloom experts and the National Basketball Players Association collaborated on 100-plus pages of return-to-play guidelines and protocols. Yes, the NBA reportedly spent arctic of $150 actor to actualize this closed-campus, no-fans, few-reporters balloon effect.
But all 21 markets represented actuality (including LA’s two franchises) had different challenges, capricious virus-spread ante and government regulations.
After every authorization reopened training accessories and players alternate for alone workouts in June, the Nets, Nuggets, Bucks, Heat, Clippers and Kings had to shut bottomward because of virus outbreaks.
“A big, absolutely important aspect of this for us was the seven or eight weeks aback our ability opened and we were able to accept alone workouts,” Mavericks drillmaster Rick Carlisle said.
He singled out administrator of amateur bloom and achievement Casey Smith, arch able-bodied trainer Dionne Calhoun, abettor able-bodied trainer Heather Mau and able-bodied achievement administrator Jeremy Holsopple.
“All did a astounding job of not alone afterward the procedures and protocols, but additionally befitting an aspect of positivity and action about accepting aback in the gym,” Carlisle said.
As an example, Carlisle cited the action of entering the facility. He declared a accessory into which anniversary being was appropriate to step. In the accessory was a quarter-inch of baptize that apple-pie shoes.
“Then you’d footfall on some towels, dry them off, and again you’d go to a base area you accept accession set of shoes from inside, change into those,” he said. “Get your temperature taken. You ample out a questionnaire. You ablution your easily and again you get into your workout.”
That is aloof one atom of adeptness that Smith says was planned and implemented not alone by those Carlisle mentioned, but accessories administrator Kory Johnson and abettor accessories administrator Craig Metcalfe; chiral therapist Casey Spangler; concrete therapist Manolo Valdivieso; abettor backbone coaches Jace Fredenburg and Meg Dodge; administrator of brainy abilities Don Kalkstein and able-bodied achievement intern Raphael Whittingham.
“The absolute Mavs training and abutment agents has been incredible,” Cuban said. “I can’t acknowledge them enough, and there aren’t abundant superlatives to call the assignment and accomplishment appropriate to get us to Orlando and accumulate anybody in the appropriate abode mentally and physically.
“This accomplished accomplishment from anybody has been extraordinary.”
Smith said the aboriginal canicule of the aperture were spent in NBA-organized board meetings.
Tumblr media
Money And Credit Card, Debit Card Icon Set. Payment, Transactions .. | credit card icon set
Discussions, Smith said, mainly focused on three areas as the NBA advised whether a acknowledgment to comedy was plausible: Logistical, medical and performance.
From logistical and achievement standpoints, the committees advised the activity lockouts of 1998 and 2011 that beneath those seasons while assiduity players’ off-seasons.
“But additionally we were aggravating to accumulate up with the anesthetic ancillary of the virus,” Smith said. “And it continues to emerge, so that’s an advancing challenge.”
When the aperture began, the Mavericks’ medical and training staffs maintained circadian chat with the players. The abeyance of all NBA training accessories and Dallas County’s stay-home, stay-safe orders fabricated training a challenge.
“Once we accomplished this wasn’t aloof a two-week thing, we had to clutter bound to adjustment as abundant accessories as we could get,” Holsopple said. “It seemed like already anybody abroad in the apple accomplished what was activity on, anybody was blasting up equipment.”
Smith and Holsopple adopted accessories from the Mavericks’ weight apartment at American Airlines Centermost and training facility. They ordered training bikes, anesthetic balls, resistance-bands power-blocks that act as dumbbells.
Holsopple and Smith alone sanitized and delivered the items to players’ homes, including Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis afore their allotment to Europe after in the pandemic.
“I’d ample up my car, and I’d go to Luka’s abode and bead off bikes, dumbbells, benches, kettle bells,” Holsopple said, abacus that Porzingis’ commitment was added backbreaking because the 7-3 centermost lives in a high-rise.
Two Mavericks were rehabilitating from surgeries and appropriate in-person concrete therapy. After accepting alliance approval, Smith formed with Dwight Powell at AAC and Calhoun formed with Jalen Brunson at the training ability while cutting PPE and advancement amusing distancing.
The blow of the Mavericks had to assignment out at their homes with no in-person supervision. Fortunately for the Mavericks, they already had a training app into which Holsopple endless alone regimens for anniversary player, with videos of how to accomplish anniversary task.
“That helped a lot,” Holsopple said. “A lot of my counterparts that I was talking to, they didn’t accept that blazon of thing. They assignment in Excel or Word certificate or something. They were aggravating to bulk out how to best administer the aperture remotely.”
How abundant did the home training admonition Mavericks players? Allow centermost Boban Marjanovic to elaborate.
“Our backbone coaches did a abundant job with all the accessories they beatific us,” he said. “Peloton, Nordic [Track]. … So far, aback we appear on the court, we don’t feel like, ‘Oh, we don’t accept affliction in legs; affliction in back.’ We’re aloof accessible to play.”
The Mavericks were amid the aftermost NBA teams to reopen their training facility, on May 28, for bound alone workouts, “out of an affluence of caution,” Smith says.
The medical, training and accessories staffs were adorable — with scheduling, amusing break and condoning protocols.
The training facility’s locker room, showers, hot and algid tubs and beef allowance and coaches’ offices remained closed. Players had to accompany their own conditioning accessory and antisepticize and change shoes aloft entering.
Player were consulted about adopted training times. Smith organized color-coded circadian schedules that were emailed to players. The agents approved to accumulate the aforementioned player-trainer tandems intact, and trainers wore gloves and masks.
Between anniversary affair there was condoning — lots of it. Smith purchased several professional-grade sprayers, like the ones exterminators use. The Mavericks bought bulk of Husky 891 Arena Disinfectant, which advertise for $94 for a case of four.

“The aggregate that we needed, it’s not like we were giving it a little spritz,” Holsopple said. “We were drowning some of the [weight] accessories because there’s little crevices that any virus could be in. We aloof can’t accept that be the case.”
Equipment managers Johnson and Metcalfe formed abstracted accouterment because the canicule were long. One of their primary responsibilities was spraying bottomward the backboards, stanchions and bank padding.
It additionally was their albatross to acquit the basketballs. Initially they followed the admonition of Spalding and acclimated bowl soap and hot water. Aback that accepted inefficient they acclimated Lysol wipes. Ultimately they chose to aerosol the assurance with Husky 891.
And in case a day of spraying and wiping the ability wasn’t enough: Every black a aggregation that specializes in hospital sanitation beatific a aggregation for extra-deep cleaning.
On June 29, employing the aforementioned affective aggregation the Cowboys use for training affected in Oxnard, the Mavericks beatific a ample barter of food to the Disney Apple bubble.
The NBA defined that accumulation trucks ability the balloon no eventually 8 a.m. July 1. Anniversary had to be unloaded into teams’ agnate resort apartment by 10 p.m. July 2 — bristles canicule afore the aboriginal beachcomber of teams accustomed on the Disney Apple campus.
Why?
“So the apartment could be antibacterial and all the accessories had time to quarantine,” Smith said. “If we had movers affective in weight accessories there bare to be a assertive cardinal of canicule canyon that the accessories not accept alive viral bodies on it.”
Oh.
The Mavericks had the appliance removed from two adjoining 400-square-foot apartment on the players’ floor. Anniversary allowance has weights and added apparatuses that aid in backbone and recovery.
“We can absolutely leave those doors accessible because there’s aegis everywhere,” Holsopple said. “They’re aloof applicant weight apartment the players can use any time.”
That is in accession to the weight apartment in the convenance accessories absorbed to the three arenas on campus.
“I’m not a big butt-kisser,” Smith said, “but I’m chiefly afflicted with the assignment the NBA has done. It’s an amazing setup. The gyms. The weight apartment they accept actuality at the convenance gyms. The training rooms. It’s absolutely amazing the assignment they put into this.”
In best seasons, the longest Mavericks alley cruise is bristles or six days. For this balloon stay, Dallas accustomed July 8 and provided it qualifies for the playoffs will be actuality a minimum of seven weeks — best if it advances accomplished the aboriginal round.
That fabricated the sending the truckload of food advanced of time all the added helpful, admitting not absolutely convenient.
Helpful because items such as Carlisle’s and J.J. Barea’s golf clubs and Seth Curry’s gaming arrangement were cat-and-mouse in their apartment aback the aggregation arrived.
Difficult because the training and medical staffs had to adapt food and backpack the barter amid amateur workouts and cleansing at the convenance ability in Dallas.
“Any time you were not with a player, you’re either planning or packing or ordering,” Holsopple said. “The bulk of planning in itself is staggering.”
Tumblr media
‘Shopping App’ by graficon – credit card icon set | credit card icon set
Example: Anniversary Maverick takes alone targeted comestible supplements. Some additionally booty collagen and vitamin C for bond accretion and beet abstract probiotics.
For anniversary player, Holsopple had to ample and characterization an abundant artificial baggie for anniversary abeyant day the amateur ability be in the balloon — 90 days. That’s added than 1,000 alone labeled baggies.
“That took a looonng time,” Holsopple said with a laugh.
Fortunately, that appear $150 actor the NBA spent is authoritative activity easier for anybody in the bubble. Or at atomic authoritative assignment added acceptable for teams’ support-staff members.
A few nights ago while speaking to The News by telephone, Mavericks accessories administrator Johnson was in the calm batting and casting ability that the Atlanta Braves use for bounce training on Disney’s ESPN Wide Apple of Sports campus.
Johnson wasn’t limbering his arm or demography BP. He was there to ablution the Mavericks’ convenance gear, utilizing some of the 66 washers and 66 dryers installed by the NBA for accessories managers to use.
“They ran accouterments for the washers and discharge for the dryers and put in AC for us,” Johnson marveled. “They absolved no expense.”
Sometimes, though, claimed touches are needed, abnormally for a break of this length. That is why Holsopple ordered a PartyBox 1000, a ample apostle with lights on which Mavericks players can comedy their admired music during practices, shootarounds and weightlifting sessions.
The Mavericks already accept a PartyBox 1000 for their convenance ability and accession at AAC, but in these communicable times, Holsopple articular that it would be added able and germ-free to accept a new one alien to the bubble.
“People say, ‘Hey, they get paid millions of dollars; they should adore what they’re doing,’” Holsopple said. “But the absoluteness is it’s animal attributes for things to get monotonous. You’ve got to bulk out how to not let things get stagnant.”
PartyBox 1000s advertise online for $1,299, but not to worry, Mr. Cuban. Holsopple ordered through Amazon. You apparently accept Prime.
Which agency aircraft apparently was free.
Trey Burke too: As abounding fans, and reporters, suspected, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist isn’t the alone Maverick who is not with the aggregation in the bubble.
None of the Mavericks-produced videos of players practicing or accomplishing recreational activities accept included bouncer Trey Burke, whom the Mavericks active July 1 to ample the agenda atom alone aback Willie Cauley-Stein autonomous to not booty allotment in the division restart.
Earlier this anniversary Mavericks drillmaster Rick Carlisle accepted that Kidd-Gilchrist is not in the bubble, nor is bouncer Jalen Brunson, who originally planned to abide his shoulder-surgery adjust in the bubble.
After Saturday’s practice, Carlisle accepted that Burke additionally is not with the team.
“It’s logistics,” Carlisle said. “That’s about what I can acquaint you on that. I do anticipate we’re afterpiece to accepting those guys [Kidd-Gilchrist and Burke] here, but above that I absolutely can’t say annihilation abroad because of agreement and regulations.”
Carlisle conceivably was apropos to HIPAA and NBA collective-bargaining regulations that absolute how abundant franchises can say about afflicted or ill players’ absences.

Picking the Mountain West Conference Champion for the 2006 season could be less secure than riding shotgun with Mel Gibson on a Friday night. Whatever group finishes first in the Mountain West this year, they ought to extend the regard the meeting has picked up with the achievement of Utah in 2004 and a year ago with Texas Christian University. Wydad Athletic Club
TCU's 8-0 meeting record, 11-1 by and large, was unquestionably a stunner considering the Horned Frogs were picked to complete fifth by generally prognosticators. Ya' think the MWC groups ought to have seen something when TCU knocked off Oklahoma in Norman in their opening game a year ago?
I am taking a gander at the MWC as a three-group race this year between the up to referenced reptiles alongside Joe Pesci's preferred group, the Utah Utes, and Donny Osmond's favored school, BYU. San Diego State is the Rip Van Winkle of the association.
I trust Utah is going to win the race to the highest point of the MWC. To start with, they play both TCU and BYU at home. The Utes have an exceptionally productive quarterback in Brian Johnson, who was fourth in the country a year ago in all out offense. This will be the second year under head mentor Kyle Whittingham after Urban Meyer went south to take a shot at his tan. Whittingham ought to be increasingly agreeable in the head job this year.
Utah had the best enrolling class in the MWC and could have some genuine monsters in the guarded line with JUCO move Aaron Tonga and green bean Joe Faifili. The guard will be driven by all-MWC cornerback Eric Weddle in a solid auxiliary. The greatest question mark is at running back, where there are a ton of youthful competitors.
BYU has the quarterback with the most obvious opportunity with regards to moving to the following dimension, John Beck. BYU positioned 6th in the country a year ago in passing offense scoring 33 for every game. This year, with eight starters returning in all out attack mode side, the Cougars will be considerably progressively unstable, particularly in the wake of getting a year added to their repertoire with hostile facilitator Robert Anae's spread framework. That's right, BYU lost star WR Todd Watkins, yet they have genuine frosh speedster McKay Jacobson for Beck to hit profound. The running assault ought to improve with a quality veteran hostile line.
BYU has a solid retribution rationale as they lost to TCU a year ago subsequent to driving 41-29 yet endured 9 cautious starter wounds during the game. A far-fetched Frog late rebound spelled rout for the men from Salt Lake. In the event that the Cougars can endure their initial three non-meeting diversions against Arizona in Tucson, Tulsa, and a long outing to Boston College, they ought to have the strength and certainty to fight for the title. News du WAC
I don't think 2006 will be the "Time of the Lizard" in the Mountain West. Despite the fact that the pigskin is an elongated shape, it beyond any doubt bobbed the correct way for TCU a year ago. Karma was certainly TCU's woman a year ago as they had four customary season wins of seven or less alongside a net addition of 21 turnovers. It will be difficult to keep up those numbers again this year.
TCU has a standout amongst the best mentors in the country no one thinks about aside from his better half and Frog fans, Gary Patterson. A year ago TCU was an obscure group, this year they have a bullseye on them greater than a Target store sign.
TCU has inability at the hostile line and has two new beginning cornerbacks. They likewise need to supplant WR playmaker Cory Rodgers. Solid extraordinary groups and incredible pass surging cautious closures will help keep TCU a danger to win it all in the Mountain West.
San Diego State procured the previous Oklahoma hostile facilitator and Iowa University quarterback, Chuck Long, as their new head mentor. There is much even more a Big 12 look to the Aztecs this year with new DC Bob Elliott and OC Del Miller, both from Kansas State. Indeed, having another instructing staff is strike one against them for over-accomplishing this year. Be that as it may, it could be the ideal opportunity for this verifiable under-accomplishing group to complete a flip-flop. Another ball-control offense should help.
Despite the fact that the offense lost great WR Jeff Webb to graduation (indeed, they do have a few alumni at SDS), they have a quality QB in Kevin O'Connell and someone to deal with Long's ideal run-first offense in future NFL'er RB Lynell Hamilton. Eight returning starters on edge side of the ball, including a stalwart optional, should indicate solid improvement from their widely appealing quality a year ago.
OK, who are the folks stepping water in the Mountain West? Begin with Sonny Lubick's Colorado State who have another quarterback coming in to lead the power-running offense. The Rams have the back, Kyle Bell, to hand off to, however should make a stride down in passing proficiency from a year ago's Justin Holland. Actualité News
While CSU ought to be significantly enhanced barrier with seven returning starters, regardless they have the red letter of being 115th in the country in hurrying safeguard a year ago. I trust this to be a "play-on" group, however they simply don't have the playmakers to make it an exceptional group. An extreme non-meeting plan with their customary Colorado game and outings to WAC powers Nevada and Fresno State will help spell out the Ram's MWC destiny.
Next, we have the horde of groups needing to climb to meeting decency. Such huge numbers of inquiries exist for every one of the groups that any of them could complete 6th or ninth. The glad New Mexico Lobos driven by mentor Rocky Long should complete at the highest point of the second-division load. The Lobos have custom and another hostile organizer, Bob Toledo, previous HC of the UCLA Bruins. Anticipate that an alternate style offense should be placed in by Toledo, ordinarily not a decent sign for progress. Be that as it may, New Mexico has the kind of QB Toledo needs to run his offense, Kole McCamey. He can run and he can pass. Shockingly, he never again will pass star WR Hank Baskett nor giving off to primo meeting back Dontrell Moore. ligue des champions 0
New Mexico has a decent timetable with no consecutive gathering street diversions. Notwithstanding, the Lobos have a ton of doubtful players and an absence of playmakers in an offense requiring them.
I should admit, I have been a season-ticket holder for UNLV football for a long time straight. It isn't that I am into rebuffing myself, you simply don't find the opportunity to see much "major class" sports in Las Vegas. Also, we have great seats and you don't need to stress over getting a decent parking spot!
UNLV has a mentor from a triumphant Utah program who seems, by all accounts, to be a decent enrollment specialist. All things considered, at any rate he is getting the "issue cases" from some real Pac-10 schools. I don't have the foggiest idea if the UNLV athletic office needs a decent guide or a decent post trial supervisor. In any case, UNLV has a few players who could be All-MWC with the most significant one being QB Rocky Hinds, an exchange from USC.
Not exclusively was the UNLV protection toward the end in the Mountain West a year ago by an immense edge there is again a noteworthy absence of profundity which could cover the Rebels if the damage bug hits them once more. An auxiliary is reinforced by various Pac-10 moves, yet is as yet more slender than Kate Moss during her "wild days".
Aviation based armed forces isn't flying high and it isn't because of high fuel costs. There is a ton of talk that head mentor Fisher DeBerry's opportunity has arrived, paying little mind to 23 years of being accountable for a glad program. Be that as it may, similarly as for TCU's situation where they won various close amusements, the Falcons lost four recreations by an aggregate of ten. While they were smothered by BYU and TCU, in all reasonableness they had various wounds, particularly in their mind-desensitizing misfortune to Army.
While consecutive losing seasons ought not forecast a miserable Air Force future, it raises foreboding shadows. To keep his activity, DeBerry needs to beat Navy and Army at the base. A four-win meeting season would then compare to a bowl for the dedicated Falcons.
OK, Wyoming mentor Joe Glenn made the front of a national games magazine a year ago (I trust it was the Sporting News). So did Cowboy bands player, Fennis Dembo, who scored 41 points in a triumph over the UCLA Bruins in the NCAA 1987 Tournament, however that was Sports Illustrated.
The fact of the matter being, anyone from Wyoming making the front of any national magazine ought not make more energy than some great fly angling in the Cowboy State. The Pokes began well a year ago at 4-1, however tumbled off their steed in a 0-6 turn. Wyoming has a generally excellent RB in Wynel Seldon with four returning hostile linemen, however inquiries at QB, the optional, and on unique groups mean the Cowboys are battling to avoid the basement with UNLV, Air Force, and New Mexico. The Mountain West Conference champion may slip into a BCS Bowl game this year. TCU joining the MWC a year ago was the best thing that could have happened to this mid-level gathering as the Horned Frogs demonstrated that an extraordinary resistance can conquer any trick or pass-overwhelming offense out there. It is a fun gathering to watch and one that I do accept is on the ascent. They are lanning against real gatherings and have had great achievement as of late against more "name schools". My Review: ✭✭✭
This is supposed to be another fairy tale re-tale. This time of Beauty and the Beast. Beauty is a young woman named Rosamund Ashfield, who has been so kindly taken in by her Aunt Lucretia’s family…and don’t you forget it, girl! The beast is by default, Aubrey Whittingham, Duke of Swanhaven, a man who has lost his parents and beloved sister and withdrawn from life to the point of ill health.
Rosamund is ever so helpful to everyone. She doesn’t see bad in anyone unless it’s forced on her. For all her efforts, she gets the short end of the stick more often than not. Her cousins use her as the butt of their jokes. Her aunt holds her in contempt and can’t seem to say anything nice about her at all. Very few people know her circumstances, and there is no one to look out for her.
Things change some for Rosamund once she befriends the Duchess, Aubrey’s grandmother. The Duchess asks Rosamund to help with her grandson. Initially, he absolutely can’t stand having her around and yells at her to go away and leave him alone. She’s been living with her cousins and Aunt Lucretia, so no sick little Duke is going to intimidate her! And she tells him so. Instead of polite conversation, they have arguments and trade insults back and forth. Their conversations are quite amusing at times as they go at it, attempting to insult each other. Invariably, of course, the worst wounding is done when it isn’t meant. Rosamund actually has some very tender feelings and Aubrey is always wounding her with his careless comments.
Eventually, they reach a sort of teasing equilibrium in their relationship. And then they are off to London, the Duchess and Rosamund, at least. But not before Aubrey says a few things that put a sparkle into Rosamund’s eyes and heat into her cheeks. But she has to face her grandfather before she sees the Duke again. And her grandfather wants nothing to do with her. He disowned her mother when she married beneath her and had her baby. He’s in no mood to be forgiving to the next generation.
Enough storytelling! What you want to know is whether the story is worth reading. Well, yes. I wouldn’t rush right out and buy it, but, yes, it is worth reading. Though it is a bit skimpy. Seems more like a play than a book to me. Aubrey and Rosamund are always walking out of the room or storming off on each other or leaving a note and disappearing. Exit stage left.
I thoroughly enjoyed the early conversations and verbal dueling between Aubrey and Rosamund. These were really well written and revealed so much about the two characters. The Duchess was rather delightful, too. She set her plan in motion and then sat back and let it work, no micromanaging. When major plan changes were called for, she didn’t hesitate to implement them. Aunt Lucretia and her two daughters were just as awful as possible and still be accepted into a drawing room. And I haven’t mentioned a thing about a mannequin. And I’m not going to. I leave that for you to discover when you read the book.
I have the second book, so I’m going to fit it into my reading time and see how the next one goes. Ms. Rogers has twelve books listed on Amazon with beautiful covers and very good ratings. Perhaps I need to read more of her work to really see her worth. Try this one, which is definitely worth reading and see if you add a new author to your list.

The AP preseason poll’s treatment of UCF isn’t anything unusual
Tumblr media
Non-power teams often fail to follow up on big breakthrough seasons, as you can see here.
The 2018 preseason AP Poll is now out, and as expected, there were a lot of reactions from fans depending on where (or if not at all) their team was.
One of the most popular reactions cam from fans of UCF, the 2017 self-proclaimed national champs checking in at No. 21 in the poll.
pic.twitter.com/ydyII3A6h2
— UCF Football (@UCF_Football) August 20, 2018
Sure, it’s a little odd to see the team that went undefeated, won the AAC, and upset Auburn in the Peach Bowl last season barely crack the top 25. But looking at past preseason AP polls, it’s actually pretty normal for one season’s star non-power to start out in the 20s or worse.
1999 Tulane
In 1998, Tommy Bowden’s Green Wave team went 11-0, and interim head coach Chris Scelfo coached the team to a Liberty Bowl victory over BYU. In the next preseason AP poll, Tulane was unranked and went 3-8.
2000 Marshall
In 1999, Bob Pruett’s Thundering Herd finished 13-0 with a Motor City Bowl win over BYU. The next year, his team was unranked in the initial poll, then went 8-5.
2004 Miami (Ohio)
Ben Roethlisberger’s RedHawks had gone 13-1 and finished No. 10 in the country. Without Roethlisberger the next year, Miami was unranked in the preseason poll and went 8-5.
Boise State’s pretty used to this
In 2006, first-year Broncos head coach Chris Petersen led the program to a 13-0 season, capped off by that incredible Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.
youtube
But in 2007, Boise State checked in at 24th in the initial preseason poll. The Broncos would go 10-3 and finish unranked.
Then in 2012 after the Broncos’ 12-1 season the year before, they were ranked in that same 24th spot the next year. They’d finish No. 18, a slight jump up.
Utah, too
Utah was unranked in the initial poll following the Utes’ 12-0 season in 2004 and Urban Meyer’s departure for Florida. The 2005 Utes finished 7-5.
Then in 2009, after Kyle Whittingham led the Utes to a 13-0 year, his team was unranked in the first AP poll. This time, the Utes finished No. 18.
Oh yeah, this has happened to UCF before, too!
And it wasn’t too long ago, either. Remember that 12-1 season during Blake Bortles’ last season? The Knights were unranked in 2014 in the first poll and then went 9-4.
Tumblr media

Houston was the most recent mid-major to get snubbed
In 2015, Tom Herman’s Cougs had a 13-1 year, capped off with an upset victory over Florida State in the Peach Bowl and a No. 8 ranking. They then started the next year down at No. 15, which still proved too high for UH despite a win over Oklahoma.
Boise State and TCU are the best examples for UCF to follow here.
The Broncos have had multiple top-five preseason rankings before, but they did it by having consistent big seasons, rather than having a winless season right in between two New Year’s bowls, as UCF has done recently.
And there are certainly fair questions about 2018 UCF.
The Knights are replacing their coaching staff and best defenders, but return what should be an awesome offense. Statistical rankings have the Knights higher than No. 21, but not much; S&P+ ranks UCF No. 17 entering the season after ranking the Knights No. 7 at the end of last year.
The only ranking that matters is the College Football Playoff top 25, so we’ll see where the Knights are by then.
On the other hand, the CFP committee isn’t perfect, and we called it out for having UCF way too low before and after the season ended.
While the Playoff committee could do a better job during the season of rewarding non-powers who are clearly having excellent years, the preseason AP Poll has a pretty good track record of not overreacting to a single good season, based on these teams listed here.

Soft drink sugar tax starts, but will it work?
Tumblr media
Image copyright Getty Images
The “ground-breaking” sugar tax on soft drinks has come into force in the UK.
From Friday manufacturers have to pay a levy on the high-sugar drinks they sell.
Ministers and campaigners believe it has already proved to be a success with many firms reducing sugar content ahead of the change. But others say it is still too early to judge the impact.
Leading brands such as Fanta, Ribena and Lucozade have cut the sugar content of drinks, but Coca-Cola has not.
The introduction of the levy means the UK joins a small handful of nations, including Mexico, France and Norway, which have introduced similar taxes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How will it work?
The levy is being applied to manufacturers – whether they pass it on to consumers or not is up to them.
Drinks with more than 8g per 100ml will face a tax rate equivalent to 24p per litre.
Those containing 5-8g of sugar per 100ml will face a slightly lower rate of tax, of 18p per litre.
Pure fruit juices will be exempt as they do not carry added sugar, while drinks with a high milk content will also be exempt due to their calcium content.
Originally, the Treasury forecast it would raise more than £500m a year, but that has now been reduced to £240m because some manufacturers have reduced the sugar content in their products.
In England that income is being invested in schools sports and breakfast clubs.
Products such as cakes, biscuits and other foods are not covered by the tax, although a separate initiative is encouraging manufacturers to reduce the sugar content of those items voluntarily.
Tumblr media
‘Too much stick, not enough carrot’
But will it work? The jury is still out.
University of Bedfordshire nutrition expert Dr Daniel Bailey said that while the levy is a “positive step” in tackling obesity and had led to a “notable” reaction by the industry, the response by consumers is uncertain.
“The increase in tax placed on soft drinks will make products more expensive, but will this actually discourage people from buying them?
“We could just end up with consumers buying the same amount but paying more.”
Polling suggests this may be the case for many people.
Research by Mintel found just under half of Britons say taxing unhealthy products would encourage them to cut back.
By comparison easier-to-understand nutritional information would alter the purchasing habits of three-quarters of people, the survey of 2,000 people showed.
Mintel’s associate director of food and drink Emma Clifford said it suggested “carrot” rather than “stick” may be a better approach.
How have consumers reacted?
Reaction to the new tax has been mixed with many consumers arguing that government should not interfere in what they consider to be a personal choice.
Twitter user @IAmNeesha wrote: “The #sugartax is a total joke. Can people really not just say no? If I fancy a Coke after work or after the gym, why am I being taxed for it?”

Having a “sugar tax” on sugary drinks isn’t going to stop obesity. How about making healthy food cheaper and making them more available for people who are on lower incomes? Putting tax on everything isn’t helpful while the healthier food is much more expensive.

@sammyyjadee tweeted: “If you educate people that sugary drinks should only be drunk in moderation, and should not be part of a child’s diet, all would be fine! #nannystate.”
However, not everyone views the tax with pessimism.

I’m right behind the new #sugartax 👍 if it stops as many people buying unhealthy drinks etc and putting that waste back out into the world then I’ll support it. I just hope it has a decent affect. 🙌

Among the readers’ comments on this story, TheJags wrote: “I’m generally against the government interfering in our lives, but the simple fact of the matter is that the NHS is struggling under the weight of unhealthy people in this country, and either we all pay for it or they do.”
Twitter user @GregoryJSpeakman added: “Fully support the #sugartax. If we’re to tackle obesity in this country then we need to take it seriously.
“We’ve tried education and ad campaigns, this is the next logical step.”
Teens consume huge amounts of sugar drinks
All age groups are consuming too much sugar, with teenagers the worst offenders.
They get a quarter of their sugar intake from soft drinks.
Public Health Minister Steve Brine said: “Our teenagers consume nearly a bathtub of sugary drinks each year on average, fuelling a worrying obesity trend.
“The levy is a ground-breaking policy that will help to reduce sugar intake.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Public Health England also hopes it will improve the oral health of children.
To coincide with the introduction of the levy, the agency released figures showing a child in England has a tooth removed in hospital every 10 minutes due to preventable decay.
PHE’s Dr Sandra White said: “It’s upsetting to see so many children admitted to hospital with tooth decay.”
She is urging families to skip soft drinks altogether and to consume water and lower-fat milks.
Sugar tax is already producing results
What happens to sugar tax money?
Young ‘to get biggest sugar tax boost’
Why are sugar and alcohol about to get more expensive?
How has industry reacted?
Tumblr media
Estimates by the Treasury based on market data suggest 50% of manufacturers have reduced the sugar content of their drinks.
Fanta has cut it by nearly a third, Ribena and Irn-Bru by half and Lucozade by nearly two-thirds.
Tesco has said none of its own-brand drinks will fall foul of the levy, although the process of reformulation started before the sugar tax was announced.
Head of soft drinks Phil Banks, believes about 85% of products purchased at the company’s stores will be below the levy threshold.
“At Tesco, things won’t be so very different,” he said.
But he conceded customers could see some of the branded drinks becoming more expensive or being served in smaller containers.
Earlier this year Coca-Cola announced it will cut the size of its 1.75l bottle to 1.5l and put up the price by 20p.
The company said it had decided not to change its classic recipe because “people love the taste and have told us not to change”.
Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and Diet Coke are not affected by the levy.

Reality Check: Did the sugar tax work in Mexico?
Mexico introduced a tax on sugary drinks on 1 January 2014, which operates in a similar way to the UK’s.
By the end of its first full year, Mexicans were consuming 12% fewer sugary beverages than in the year leading up to the tax’s introduction.
The biggest reductions were among the poorest households.
Researchers also looked at what happened to other drinks and found there was an increase in sales of drinks that did not come under the tax. This was mainly driven by a rise in popularity of bottled water.
There is no evidence yet that this has led to a reduction in obesity – but it may well still be too soon to tell what the longer-term effects will be on the population’s weight.

Ute kicker Chayden Johnston is stepping away from football, after winning the job in spring practice

Chayden Johnston will be remembered in Utah football history as the kicker who initially beat out a Lou Groza Award winner. The field goal attempt that Johnston missed in the 2017 season opener will remain his only kick in college football.
Five days after concluding spring practice as Utah’s No. 1 kicker, according to Kyle Whittingham, Johnston announced he is giving up football with…
