Mazda RX 87 Concept, 1967, by Bertone. Presented at the 14th Tokyo Motor Show, the RX 87 was the last Mazda designed by Giugiaro while he was still working for Bertone. It went into production in 1969 as the Luce R130 Coupé and remains the only front wheel drive rotary engined car Mazda ever produced. It sold very badly, with less than 1000 cars being made

1967-Mazda Cosmo is released
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Mazda Cosmo (マツダ・コスモ, Matsuda Kosumo) is an automobile which was produced by Mazda from 1967 until 1995. Throughout its history, the Cosmo served as a "halo" vehicle for Mazda, with the first Cosmo successfully launching the Mazda Wankel engine. The final generation of Cosmo served as Mazda's flagship vehicle in Japan, being sold as the Eunos Cosmo through its luxury Eunos division in Japan.

Mazda chose to use the name "cosmo", reflecting international cultural fascination with the Space Race, as Mazda wanted to showcase the rotary engine as forward-thinking, with a focus on future developments and technology.

So in Japan itself, between population density and Mazda-inspired knowledge base, was the assumption that everyone would have access to a mechanic who knows what to do with a Wankel engine?

The global unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) propulsion system market has been witnessing significant growth in the past decade due to the rise in applications of UAVs across multiple industries, such as precision agriculture, inspection and monitoring, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and combat operations.
The competitive landscape of the global UAV propulsion system market consists of several organic and inorganic strategies followed by the key players to develop propulsion systems. The strategies include product innovations, partnerships, acquisitions, and new product launches, among others.

The UK government and arms industry are both complicit in Israel’s killing of seven aid workers in Gaza, including three British citizens, the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), has alleged. The workers were killed by a strike from a Hermes 450 drone manufactured by Israeli-owned company Elbit Systems. The drone is powered by a UK-made R902(W) Wankel engine, produced by Elbit subsidiary UAV Engines Limited in the UK.

Car Spot: Trabant 601 S "Delux"
A cold war relic is this week's car spot.
East Germany’s answer to West Germany’s “People’s Car” …. Growing up in the 1960s and ’70s I remember the Cold War, and how the communists used East Berlin as a showcase for the success of socialism. Automobiles were a big part of that but ultimately, they were just terrible cars like this week’s car spot, the Trabant 601 S Dulux. Found this example at the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio. I…

Moller M400 Skycar, 2001. A project by Paul Moller (pictured) to market a  a flying car with VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) capability. Each of the four pivoting ducted fan pods is powered by a pair of Rotapower Wankel engines (making 8 rotary engines in total, each producing 102hp, so 816hp in combination). The Skycar demonstrated tethered hovering capability in 2003, being tethered for insurance reasons. The development of the M400 (and smaller M200) encountered a number of setbacks and, as of 2023, the M400 has never achieved free flight. The parent company, Moller International, has been dormant since 2015. Moller has made several unsuccessful attempts to sell the prototype on Ebay

Mazda 1200 Coupe (With A Secret Under The Hood)
This 1969 Mazda 1200 Coupe is considerably faster than it was when it originally left Japan, an enterprising Australian owner has bolted in a Mazda 12A rotary engine and paired it with a 5-speed manual transmission from an RX-7 Series 5.Fresh from the factory the Mazda 1200 Coupe tipped the scales at 865 kgs (1,907 lbs) depending on final specification, and so the original 58 hp / 69 lb ft 1,169cc inline-four was considered powerful enough.Mazda did offer a 982cc 10A rotary engine in this model from 1968 onwards, so in way, transplanting a 12A into it is really just adding a factory upgrade that the factory never offered. Mazda released the 1200 Coupe in 1967 as part of the second generation of the Mazda Familia model family. Export models were typically just named for their engine capacity, so there was an 800, a 1000, a 1200, and a 1300 offered as part of these early model lines. The car you see here was built by one of those Australians with a penchant for Japanese iron, but rather than keeping it stock or restoring it back to factory-original condition, he opted to transform it into a discrete sports car.In order to do this he sourced a Mazda 12A rotary engine, there were no concerns about having enough room in the engine bay as rotary engines are famously small, and the 1200 belonged to a model family designed to accommodate a Wankel engine from the factory. The original four speed manual transmission was obviously not going to manage dealing with over double the horsepower and torque, so the aforementioned 5-speed gearbox from a Series 5 RX-7 replaced it in the transmission tunnel.Suspension was tastefully lowered and tightened up a little to offer better handling, but the original 13″ steel wheels and hub caps were kept in place to keep the car looking as original as possible.Externally the car received a new coat of red paint and the classic Japanese fender mirrors were kept in place. Inside the car the interior is close to factory original condition, it has new upholstery, and no hint of the considerably increased power under the hood.

Tried to be sneaky and just translate and copy the English wikipedia page but I feel this sloppy work would be found out
#maybe not I'm already very English poisoned#The Wankel engine has a spinning eccentric power take-off shaft#with a rotary piston riding on eccentrics on the shaft in a hula-hoop fashion. The Wankel is a 2:3 type of rotary engine#i.e.#two-thirds of its ideal total geometrical volume can be attributed to displacement. Thus#its housing's inner side resembles an oval-like epitrochoid#whereas its rotary piston has a trochoid (triangular) shape (similar to a Reuleaux triangle)#and the Wankel engine's rotor always forms three moving working chambers.[22] The Wankel engine's basic geometry is depicted in figure 7. S#not being guided by the external chamber. The rotor does not make contact with the external engine housing. The force of expanded gas press#All practical Wankel engines are four-cycle (i.e.#four-stroke) engines. In theory#two-cycle engines are possible#but they are impractical because the intake gas and the exhaust gas cannot be properly separated.[15] The operating principle is similar to#Wankel engines typically have a high-voltage spark ignition system.[25]#In a Wankel engine#one side of the triangular rotor completes the four-stage Otto cycle of intake#compression#ignition#and exhaust each revolution of the rotor (see figure 8.).[26] The shape of the rotor between the fixed apexes is to minimize the volume of#respectively.[23][27] As the rotor has three sides#this gives three power pulses per revolution of the rotor. All three faces of the Wankel's rotor operate simultaneously in one revolution.#one power pulse is produced at each revolution of the shaft. For comparison#the four-stroke piston engine completes the Otto cycle in two revolutions of its output shaft (crankshaft). The Wankel thus produces twice#Wankel engines have a much lower degree of irregularity when compared to a reciprocating piston engine#making the Wankel engine run much smoother. This is because the Wankel engine has a lower moment of inertia and less excess torque area due#a two-rotor Wankel engine runs more than twice as smoothly as a four-cylinder piston engine.[29] The eccentric output shaft of a Wankel eng#000 or 8#000 rpm.
