hi! i just got my copy of the book for my birthday, and i’m enjoying catching up! it’s hilarious to me that not only is monkey’s staff named, but also labeled with its name and its weight. i did have a question though: it’s called the “as-you-will gold banded cudgel” and the “as-you-will” descriptor shows up a lot—what’s that mean? Because in English it sounds like it could mean “as you’re going to do” or it could mean that the staff will do as you will (as in command) it to do? which of these does it actually mean, or is it neither?
The original name of the staff is 如意金箍棒, which translated by Anthony Yu it is called "The Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod" and by WJF Jenner "As-You-Will Gold-Banded Cudgel", as you said. Let's do some translation:
The first word would be 如意 ru2yi4, which can be translated as "be gratified" or "to be as one wishes". The first character means "to be in compliance with" or to "surpass", and the second one has more meanings, such as "idea, wish or anticipate".
The second word is 金箍棒 jin1gu1bang4, literally golden cudgel. The first character 金 means gold/golden (or money), the second one 箍 hoop, and the third one 棒 club or stick.
I guess it was translated by "as-you-will" because it's what the stick would say to Monkey if it spoke. I think Anthony Yu's is the closest translation to the meaning of its name. Another translation could be "Golden-Hooped Rod that Grants One's Wishes".

Masing-masing station ada 2-3 galon air, lengkap dengan pompa air dan petugas yang siap bantu.
Ada cerita nih dari salah satu penonton asal Bandung, Resti. Dia dukung banget aturan pake tumbler ini buat jaga lingkungan.
Kata dia, "Belum pernah konser harus bawa tumbler gini. Ini pertama kali. Bagus ya buat mengurangi sampah plastik."

Selain wajib bawa tumbler, konser West Java Festival 2023 juga peduli lingkungan, guys.
