Fandom!

I first thought about fandom as a kid when I came across people in Sri Lanka who were among the first to join the K-Pop wave of the late 2000s and early 2010s. It was rather interesting as a child to see brown people become early adopters of something so foreign. In my youth, however, I cast it aside innocently as something "weird."

I, at the time, did not realize that I engaged in fandom as much as those K-Pop-loving Sri Lankans, having admired Western music my whole life. With my exposure to the internet, I would become consumed with what I loved and immersed myself in an EDM fandom. To define me as a fan would be right as I was obsessed, given a conventional definition. However, at the time, it was much more.

Social belonging and community were aspects of being a fan, I realized. Seeing what was popular on the charts, intently reviewing DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs lists, watching and analyzing live sets, becoming accustomed to every niche type of EDM, and being able to name it with ease based on sonics; these were things that consumed my free time and saw me interact with those online to discuss and debate matters surrounding electronic music. While I did not look for social belonging through this interest, it would find me as I befriended those around me with the same interests I had. However, not a form of conventional 'cultural production,' my love for music taught me how to mix music on a professional Pioneer deck. I was invested in various aspects.

Henry Jenkin's term 'textual poachers' is interesting because we are all guilty of doing just that, taking from external media and making something our own. There is beauty in that, and one can see it with Hip-Hop in the UK or K-Pop in South Korea, or on a smaller scale within the confines of lone albums or singles whereby an artist imitates a style or cadence, seen with Drake using a Jamaican and British accent at times or utilizing Afrobeats.

Compared with how I viewed them as a child, fandoms today have grown tremendously, both positively and negatively. With a pessimistic gaze, cancel culture and online policing have tarnished the freedom of the internet to a degree. Media taken out of context or a tweet or post from a different era are brought to light to dismember individuals publicly. Conversely, communities have used themselves to spread humor and awareness. I've personally seen this with the F1 fandom, who share humor and compassion.

Week Nine -  04/03/2019

After formative + Project week

So after getting feedback from formative submission, our lecturer told us to update more strongly with the backstory plus our touchpoints but overall looks good for the time being. 

Part two of this major cross-disciplinary project was to do an app of one set of customer journey path. We have to come up which part of the customer journey we feel that would be important and vital for our branding and the ‘x’ factor.

We were given a set of worksheets to work on which would aid us for this part of the project.

so with this set of the worksheet,  we are supposed to decide which focal point we like to create for our app. Both my partner and I felt like our special ‘x’ factor was delivering fresh food to your doorstep for busy parents since our targets, after all, are young families with both working parents ( instead of how the dynamics were in the past where there would be at least one stay home parent, while the other parent is a bread-winner ).

The worksheet, we have to tackle our ‘ideal’ customer + customer journey map + interviews + pros&cons of the choice of the grocery store since after all, as designers, we are supposed to constantly help improve on user experience in any way. 

I did some simple research to see how this worksheet works since our lecturers got this online. I watched some youtube videos to learn how helpful it is to map out the customer journey before attempting to make the app because it would be easier to make the changes now rather than after when you have created the app. I also wanted to avoid making some common mistakes designers do when they are creating app.

This way, we are also supposed to create a roleplay video for our choice of the customer journey. My partner and I decided to create the idea of delivery but also collecting credits and coupons. We created a simple script where it shows how the sticker on our product would be also useful after purchase for the customers when they get home. This would be done in week 10!

Week 09 - Ninth Update of 20-Time! 

NOTE: There are basically only 4 more sessions left for me to finish this, so I basically changed my schedule entirely to fit the amount of time left, therefore I’ll end my updates by Week 13 :(

Actual Status Updates:

What did you do in class today? In class today I sketched Mulan and partially Ariel as part of my “Disney Princess” section in order to accommodate the 4 sessions left of 20-Time. I completely changed my schedule of working on this and solely focus on finishing all 3 pieces in time of the deadline, resulting in my plan for success to be disregarded and rebuilt, but otherwise I’d say I’m still safe sailing for accomplishing this. The only obstacle I really faced was making sure to make the sketch as nice as possible whilst being as efficient as possible. My Ariel sketch was unfinished as I was unable to complete it during class, but I would say I wouldn’t edit anything, rather I would add onto it. Hopefully by the next session I’ll be able to outline and finish sketching both Mulan and Ariel as well as begin sketching the final middle piece. One probable hindrance is the fact that some materials for coloring the sections is not with me at the moment (i.e. the brush pens - Mulan), but I’ll make sure to buy/get those materials before then. 

On track? Somewhat derailed, but my new schedule will hopefully put me back in the place I want to be!
