Let’s talk about the soundtrack for a moment..

First of all, I have a soft spot for good soundtrack and Motherland is giving me so much joy. (I’ve made a post on Twitter, but here I can write more)

I want to talk about this one because it’s becoming one of my favourite. (Sorry if there’s already a post around here about it, I just need to get it out of my system)

WCLM by Lydia Ainsworth

We’re hearing this one during that scene, the “whatever happens, I love you”. Let’s analyse it, shall we?

The song starts playing

Here I am a stranger

Scylla is indeed a stranger right there: a Bellweather wedding, where she doesn’t know anyone except for Raelle, and yes her unit. But she is a stranger, not only because no one knows her really, but because she’s been a stranger to the feelings she’s cooking up since she met Raelle. She’s a stranger to what’s to come.

Right at the end Scylla is closing her eyes, suddenly remembering one of her first fond memories with Raelle.

Here I am a woman

Staring in the mirror

Of course, the lyrics aren’t random. Here Scylla is completely free, yes her foot is tied up, but she’s alone with Raelle, just looking at each other and enjoying floating in the air. She sees herself in the the girl in front of her: a high wall to protect herself from others, giving them just a distorted version of their true selves.

Than she reopens her eyes.

Just in time to have another memory with the other girl in her arms. When everything was simpler, she didn’t know when she’d have to take her away.

How did we arrive here?

And she’s asking herself the same question, how is it possible that she would start falling for her target?

Please, notice that smile on Raelle, it’s so pure, this scene is so pure and simple. Just two girls having fun after another night spent together.

How we measured our blue? Moving in the mirror

She wonders what would have happened if she didn’t feel this way? Would it be easier? Would she feel regret?

Here there’s no lyrics, only the echo of mirror, this moment deserves the quiet, why? She’s suspended in time. Scylla took the first step, she went and kissed Raelle, surely she surprised herself for how it felt, as you can see from the raising brow. Raelle is surprised too, she didn’t expect it, but she surely hoped for.

She had closed her eyes for a second, probably when she did the same in her memory. As soon has she opened them she looks a bit annoyed, she wants more time with her, she doesn’t want it to end. Yes, she should bring her to the Spree, but she can’t let herself do that. In fact, in this moment she hears the clock ticking, it’s 6pm. She’s already late.

What will happen now? What’s going to happen to her? Will the Spree take her out? Will the Spree take Raelle by themselves? Will she be able to run away with her? Will she be able to save her and herself in the process? Does she have time? Do they have time?

Raelle notices there’s something wrong with Scylla and asks her if she’s okay, “you went pale”. Little does she knows that her Scylla has a war zone inside herself at that moment.

Of course, during these moments we don’t have any lyrics of the songs, because we feel the anticipation of what is yet to come.

Here she’s deciding once again that being there with Raelle it’s what matters to her. She’s putting her first, she wants to have this dance, she wants to hold her girlfriend near just one last time. She’s giving them as much time as possible.

Than the song brings attention to itself.

You may forget

in time you may not see

what love can be

Scylla doesn’t want to leave anything unspoken, she needs to let Raelle know she does care for her, she does love her. She knows what loss feels like, what it can do to a person, she knows what could happen to them, but she doesn’t want to regret not telling her the truth, at least this truth.

She told her she has been burned before, and damn she is burning so much right now. She is giving up everything just for those two more minutes.

What love can be

The focus shifts on Raelle.

Yet again, she keeps being surprised by this girl, but her relief, her joy in hearing and feeling the love from Scylla just puts an enormous smile on her face, which she tries to conceal in the crook of the Scylla’s neck.

Love.

That’s what she’s feeling too, but she’s too overwhelmed to say anything, she just wants to get closer. She thinks about what all that they can have, after all they have time.

“Remember that earlier conversation about the lighthouse on the beach? Why can’t we go there, right now? Starting our life together, you love me, I love you, let’s do this. Now.” She should tell her. Yes. Man, is this what makes people feel during weddings?

Stay wild at heart

but know the end is near

Scylla will keep loving Raelle with all her heart even if it is inevitably getting broken. Both hers and Raelle’s.

She should have brought her somewhere else, somewhere safe, somewhere where they would have been just the two of them, alone, living their life, without worrying about the military, the terrorist, the nation, just thinking about themselves.

No, she doesn't think she will recover from this burn.

Maybe one day.
