ST JOSEPH'S PARADE AND ST JOSEPH'S PLACE
St. Joseph's Parade is a narrow street connecting Nelson Street with Dorset Street. Off St. Joseph's Parade there is a number of terraces all of which are named St Joseph's Place and most if all connect to Blessington Place.
A COMPLEX OF NARROW STREETS AND TERRACES OFF DORSET STREET While I may live close to Dorset Street St Joseph’s Parade is new to me. To add to my confusion I am aware that there is a St. Joseph Place near Clarkes City Arms in Stoneybatter. St. Joseph’s Parade is a narrow street connecting Nelson Street with Dorset Street. Off St. Joseph’s Parade there is a number of terraces all of which are…

Voigtlander Lanthar 65mm F2 Lens Review - Sharp and Beautiful!
These colors are worthy of sonnets.
I have only owned two lenses since I began photographing professionally: a 50mm and an 85mm. This setup has suited me perfectly fine for well over a decade. When I need another focal length, I rent it or borrow it. Somewhere along the line, I developed an appreciation of storytelling. The more I choose to incorporate backgrounds instead of creamy bokeh, the more my 85mm sits on a shelf collecting…

Almost everything involving this picture is kind of old. In the foreground you see a Zeiss Contessa SBE filmkamera built between 1963-1967. In the background you see Stadshuset(The City Hall) in Stockholm wich was built 1923. The Picture is taken with a Voigtländer 65mm f2. Even though this lens is modern(2019), the manufacturer is not. It was actually founded 1756! Yep, 264 years ago! And yea, this beast of a lens is mounted on a topmodern Sony a7III fullframe camera. • • • • #sonyalpha #tonekillers #lightroommasters #houseoftones #killaframez #befor #optimalmoments #bealpha #unknownperspectives #lr_vista #a7iii #ourmomentum #thecreativeshots #toneception #supremeshutter #zeisscameralenses #sergio88andree #streethunt #swedenimages #voigtlander #voigtlander65mmf2 https://www.instagram.com/p/B8HNZ7cFLhS/?igshid=frm5ii0vzzsy

What a name. What a lens.
This lens was a weird find. Had not heard of it online. Had not seen any press releases. Had not seen any reviews. Never heard of it. This was found by the power of the local camera shop. It sat there under glass staring at me every time I stopped through until one day I threw it on my camera. This happened.
And that was it. I was hooked.
Tried to fight it. Went on for a couple of months. Ultimately futile. In the end, I traded it for a bit of “sensible” gear that had sat unused for most of last year. And I am glad I did. Why? Glad you asked. LArgely purchases fall into one of three categories for me.
Worse than I thought.
Either in technical performance or real-world usefulness.
About what I thought.
No more. No less. Often times boring.
Better than I thought.
Far more useful or far better performing than expected.
No amount of research can predict real-world personal experience with 100% accuracy. The lens I traded fell somewhere between 1 and 2. While it performed as expected I did not have near as great a need for that performance envelope as I had expected. As a part of this process, a new mantra was formed, “No more boring lenses.” A boring lens can be a perfectly good lens that simply does not generate many keepers. A gauge I use os my own cloud and flickr keepers. If I delete files created during the editing process, whether due to imperfections or lack of interest, or I do not post many that do survive that lens is likely doomed. Lenses that do not bore me are lenses that regularly generate results that perform beyond my expectations regardless of price point. While I no longer shoot MFT an all-time bargain champion for me is the Olympus 40-150mm. This lens costs peanuts, but generated some of my all-time favorite photos. Two of the shots below (Bronx basketball court and Butterfly) won a photo contest at UNC (2 of 4 all together) and hung on the walls of our IT offices for years until we moved. The third is a favorite candid hip shot of a couple in Central Park.
  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Solid number 3 lens. This Voigtlander is also a solid 3. Which is saying something because I expected a lot just based on the in-shop test.
Sharpness.
Colors.
Ease of use due to the chipped manual focus lens that triggers magnification and peaking when you turn the focus wheel.
Aesthetics and material build quality above reproach.
Nice portrait length and very nice macro capabilities.
Focus and aperture rings had a very nice feel.
Then I took it for a spin.
So sharp that it can nearly imitate a zoom by cropping later. For example:
Aperture ring becomes only control for camera aperture and is also retained in EXIF information along with lens name and other information…
Ok. Forget everything I said above. Things change.
Found another lens that was recently released that has blown me away. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD. Everything I said about the Lanthar is true and more. But for reasons that will be explained in a later post it proved a better and even more flexible solution than this lens.
For now I will say that the Lanthar is the sharper lens. Have seen nothing sharper and no one looking for an impeccable example of no holds barred imaging perfection could ask for more. But for me very near as good performance in macro, sharpness, and color wins the day.
Recently I decided to abandon the Pokemon “gotta catch them all” mentality when it comes to camera gear that I had slipped into. This includes weeding out focal length redundancy unless there is a very compelling reason to do so. No boring lenses are allowed, however. Exceptions will be made in cases of exceeding flexibility. That is not boring. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD is one of those exceptions. In fact the banner photo for this post was taken with it.
Welp. Here is a sample gallery and below are a few shots from that gallery.
Happy shooting.

The sudden closure of Ryan Avery’s Veydra cinema prime lens design and manufacturing enterprise several years ago created a huge gap in the affordable ciné lens market and many self-funded independent moviemakers were dismayed if not devastated by the ending of the line.
Meike Cinema Prime Set in 12mm, 16mm, 25mm, 35mm and 50mm T2.2 lenses with Micro Four Thirds mounts. Meike Cinema Primes in 65mm and 85mm focal lengths are coming later this year, 2020. Image courtesy of Duclos Lenses.
Luckily, HongKong Meike Digital Technology Co., Ltd has ramped up its lens division to the point where the company appears to be rivalling if not outstripping Mr Avery’s noble efforts.
Veydra, thwarted
Duclos Lenses came up with a Fujifilm X-Mount option for Veydra’s Mini Primes that can cover the APS-C format. Image courtesy of Veydra LLC.
I had been planning on obtaining my own set of Veydra Mini Prime lenses for native use in documentary production on Panasonic and Blackmagic Design cameras, spurred on by Duclos Lens’ creation of its interchangeable mount to enable using a subset of the Veydra lenses on Fujifilm X-mount Super 35mm/APS-C cameras.
Two things dampened my enthusiasm, however.
First was the sheer cost of a complete set of Veydra lenses in M43 mount along with the Duclos X-mount kits needed when adapting them for Fujifilm X-mount cameras.
Compare the cost of the Meike primes with the now discontinued Veydra primes by looking at the Duclos Lens product pages for proof of the radical price differences between lens lines.
Compare the Meike lenses’ USD400.00 average price and reported superior quality to the Veydra lenses’ USD1200.00 average price and the conclusion is clear – consider investing in a set of Meike cinema primes.
Meike 4 Lens Cinema Prime Set 12mm, 16mm, 25mm, 35mm T2.2 for Micro4/3 MFT at Revar Cine website. Image courtesy of Revar Cine.
The current price of the four-lens set for Micro Four Thirds as above at Ryan Avery’s Revar Cine website is USD1595.00, about one Meike lens above the cost of just one Veydra lens.
At time of writing, seven focal lengths are available as Meike Cinema Primes in M43 mount :
12mm = 24mm in the 35mm sensor format
16mm = 32mm
25mm = 50mm
35mm = 70mm
50mm = 100mm
65mm = 130mm
85mm = 170mm
A subset of the Meike Cinema Primes is available for Super 35/APS-C cameras in Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount:
25mm = 37.5mm in the APS-C/Super35 sensor format
35mm = 52.5mm
50mm = 75mm
65mm = 97.5mm
85mm = 127.5mm
Meike 65mm and 85mm T2.2 Cinema Primes, listed by Meike as coming later in 2020. Image courtesy of Meike.
Whether for  M43 or Super 35 cameras, the Meike Cinema Primes provide a well-spaced and feature-matched set of focal lengths that should meet most cinematographers’ daily needs.
The Voigtlaender Nokton f/0.95 Micro Four Thirds lens set, minus the matching and more recently released Voigtlaender Nokton 60mm f/0.95 M43 lens. Left to right: 10.5mm, 17.5mm, 25mm and 42.5mm focal lengths. Duclos Lenses offers ciné-modded versions of these stills lenses, making them more suitable for video production. Meike needs to offer a wider lens than its current 12mm.
I would very much like to see Meike release a super wide angle in the 10mm to 10.5mm range, and an 18mm moderate wide angle lens with coverage enough for M43 and Super 35.
I have written before about the need for a professional-quality 18mm lens for stills photography with Fujifilm X-mount cameras, as an alternative to Fujifilm’s quirky and semi-pancake Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 R.
Meike’s current cinema prime lens offering for Super 35 goes no wider than 25mm and a complete lens set needs, nay, demands, a medium wide and an ultra wide lens in the equivalent of 28mm and 21mm.
That is, an 18mm and a 14mm.
Veydra 50mm and 25mm Mini Prime Cinema manual focus lenses with imperial or metric markings, made by Veydra LLC.
Ryan Avery had been pursuing an 8.5mm ultra wide-angle Veydra M43 lens design but eventually ruled it out due to cost and size considerations.
And then disaster struck with a break-in at the company’s lens storage facility, followed by a court case with Mr Avery’s Veydra business partner.
Matthew Duclos of Duclos Lenses recently shared all he knows about Veydra’s demise at his personal blog.
Meike Cinema Lenses with Ryan Avery
Meanwhile, Ryan Avery is retailing Meike Cinema Primes at his Revar Cine website.
youtube
“Meike Cinema Prime lenses are designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. Available for MFT, Sony E, and Fuji X Mount cameras from Micro4/3 to APS-C size sensors. Compact, lightweight and perfect for a true cinematography experience on most mirrorless cameras.”

Meike’s cinema lens lineup for Micro Four Thirds, Sony E-mount and Fujifilm X-mount are welcome indeed given their affordability and the absence of OEM cinema prime lenses by brands such as Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic and Sony.
After the end of Veydra, I was contemplating the direction to take with video-capable prime lenses for Super 35/APS-C and Super 16/M43.
I grew up relying on prime lenses for filmmaking and still feel most comfortable with cinema primes for video production over the reportedly excellent zoom lenses in several lens mounts made by Fujifilm in its Fujinon MK pairing for X-mount, E-mount and M43.
With Olympus’ recent announcement that it had sold its camera and lens division, and the possible outcome of its excellent M.Zuiko Pro zoom and prime lenses going the way of Veydra, I have been wondering if my beloved Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro should plan on welcoming some M.Zuiko Pro siblings if there was a sudden sell-off of the lineup.
But the M.Zuiko Pro lineup does not answer the need for X-mount cinema lenses whereas Meike appears to be on the right track not only with its current Meike Cinema Prime offerings and possible additional focal lengths but also its coming so-called “full frame” aka 35mm sensor format cinema prime lenses.
More power to Meike’s arm, though I do hope the company will see fit to loaning cinema primes to a range of well-qualified stills photography and video production reviewers so we can get the full measure of these exciting new lenses.

THE CORTEN STEEL SIGN LOOKS LIKE A SHIP
The port company is responsible for pilotage services within Dublin Bay, and manages the three port lighthouses (but not those of Howth or Kish Bank). It also formerly operated two drydocks, which were closed in 2016.
DUBLIN PORT HQ In some of my photographs you may notice a large pool of water at the side of the road. As I was photographing this sign a middle aged woman redirected her car to pass through the water in order to splash me and that is what happened … I had to return home to change as a result. Weathering steel, often referred to by the genericised trademark COR-TEN steel and sometimes written…

Voigtlander’s New Lanthar 65mm F2 FE Macro Lens Will Be Under $1100
This isn't your average manual focus lens for Sony FE mount, and its pricing is now official!
It’s been a while, but back at CP+ 2017, you may recall that Cosina announced the development of three new Voigtlander branded full frame native Sony E-Mount lenses. As is the case whenever new native full frame lenses are added to the Sony system people got excited, but since the announcement information about these lenses has been quiet – until now. (more…)

Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 FE review by SonyAlphaRumors
Question: Is the new Voigtlander sealed enough fir rain? Answer: hope so 🙂 #sony #sonyalpha #voigtlander
Ein Beitrag geteilt von Andrea Photographer-Explorer (@andrea_pizzini_photographer) am Dez 29, 2017 um 6:24 PST
Note on SAR reviews: Reviews posted by me (Andrea from SAR) are non-technical. They focus more on the creative aspects of the lens and what you can do with it. All lenses tested are purchased by myself. I got no discount or sponsorship by anyone and I am 100% free to share my own thoughts. All the images posted within this article are copyrighted and found in higher resolution on Flickr, 500px, Twitter and Instagram.
The summary of this review: The new Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 FE is lens that I first hated, than loved, than hated again and that somehow accepted it 🙂
The first challenge of this lens: Before I bought this lens I actually didn’t like it. 40mm is an odd focal length for someone like me used to shoot 50mm. But nevertheless I bought it because of two reasons:
1) I like Voigtlander manual focusing lenses a lot (I do own a couple of M-mount lenses) 2) I liked the challenge of finding what’s useful to shoot with a 40mm f/1.2 FE lens
The first hands-on feeling: Super solid and heavy lens. I love the feel. It feels like owning an old car that has no electronics. Translated this mean it feels it will outlast my life. The lesser electronic something has the longer it lives 🙂 I love the mechanical focus ring. I dislike Sony’s focus by wire where I never have the certainty of “where I am” with my focus. And I like the nice clicking of the aperture ring although in my opinion having 1/3 stop clicks is useless. They should have given us 1/2 stop clicks. With so many click-click-click I am never 100% sure where I am with my aperture.
The first failures: This image is just one of the many shoots I failed to nail the focus. On moving objects it is a real challenge to work at max f/1.2 aperture.
Full size image on Flickr
Tried to focus on the man but I got the focus on the front of the chair. D’oh! Another initial failure is that I used this lens as it would be a 50mm lens. I ended up to have to crop most of my shots 🙂
Finding the sweet spot of this lens: It took me 2 days to understand how to use this lens. This is an example where I nailed the use of this lens. I aligned the frame on the lights of the tram and focused on the only on person that had warm light on his face.
Full size image on Flickr
In that case I found the 40mm focal length perfect. It gives you that sense of space but thanks to the f/1.2 aperture you can select to focus a certain “space within this space”.
The repeating failure: Than I tried once again to use this lens for street photography on moving objects:
Full size image on Flickr
Big fail again. The only way you can use this on moving objects is just to shoot 10fps on my Sony A7rIII and hoping one of the shots will get sharp. But this is really a lens where you have to give yourself TIME. Stay still, found something that stands still and frame your shot. Than this can takes some excellent images:
Full size image on Flickr
This lens is not made for quick street photography. It’s too challenging for that. This is mean for photographers who have time to think and choose. And in some sort this means it forces you to be a better photographer.
The one surprise: This lens has proved to be an interesting choice for architectural shooting:

And here are some Bokeh shots: This lens has a nice smooth focus transition.
Full size image on Flickr
But there is a but….if you have lights in the frame expect the full palette of “shit” 🙂 Onion rings and cat eye! Of course the way I tested this was extreme:
What kind of test can you perform when lying in bed with 39* fever? A bokeh test of my Christmas tree! Shot with theVoigtlander 40mm at max f/1.2 aperture and max defocus. You can see the dirt on the lens (my fault). But you also see cat eye bokeh and onion rings. So definitely not a lens for nice round bokeh lovers. That said I like the lens bokeh in real life shots where there are no huge lights in scene. Lovely rendering! #sonyalpharumors #sonyimages #sonygear #sonyalpha #sonyphotography #voigtlander
Ein Beitrag geteilt von Andrea Photographer-Explorer (@andrea_pizzini_photographer) am Jan 9, 2018 um 5:53 PST
Technical quality: The build quality is superb but from a pure Optical performance this isn’t an impressive lens. It’s not SUPER sharp at f/1.2, it doesn’t have that nice bokeh rings, it has some moderate vignetting wide open. But none of these technical flaws was enough to not make me love this lens. And I feel confident using it at f/1.2 aperture as long as your goal isn’t to have sharp images across the frame and lovely bokeh. The lens is also clearly NOT made for that kind of photography.
Summary:
The goodies: – this lens forces you to take time and think. – 40mm f/1.2 allows you to choose a space within a space. Something you can’t easily do with a 50mm lens. – Good enough at the center of the frame when shooting at f/1.2 – Great build quality and focus ring feeling
The badies: – challenging lens to use at the beginning. Need some learning curve – Not a stellar performer like the Voigtlander 65mm macro.
Technical rating: 3.5 stars out of 5 Creativity rating: 4.5 stars out of 5
Would I recommend this lens? If you seek something creative and have the guts for the challenge my answer is definitely YES!
Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 at BHphoto, Amazon and Adorama.
Next lens reviews: I am now testing the Laowa 15mm FE and the 85mm f/1.8 FE. A live testing report can be found on my Instagram channel.
