Three fics tag game
I was tagged by @stardustviolet: name your most popular fic and two “hidden gems” that haven’t circulated as much.
Thank you for tagging me!
And this cracked me up, due to my recent adventures in ficcing.
Anyway, most popular fic, by the number of kudos, is:
A Treasure from the Trash
Shadowhunters, Magnus/Alec, 2539 words
Summary: In the middle of the night, Magnus gets a phone call from Simon, who has found a baby in a dumpster.
When it comes to “hidden gems”, I can’t NOT mention my most recent fic, which after a bit more than three weeks has a total of 5 hits and 0 kudos. Even as I was writing it, I said that no one was going to read it, so I take a certain sadistic pleasure in being right. AFAIK, my beloved beta reader is the only one who actually read the whole thing. (I probably would have minded more if The Sandman hadn’t eaten my brain right after I posted the final chapter.)
Away from the Abyss
Ran, Kyoami/Tsurumaru, 20453 words
Summary: Kyoami sees Tsurumaru standing on the cliff and decides to go back for him. It's a spur-of-the-moment decision, and he doesn't expect to pick up a travel companion. Much less a lover...
The position for hidden gem #2 is more contested, but I figure I might as well take my second most recent fic, my 2021 Yuletide effort, which has had a little bit more attention but certainly not much.
It’s Over When It’s Over
Paradise City (and American Satan), Vic/OFC (though mostly gen), 4555 words
Summary: Vic tries to deal with the fallout from the festival, and his own guilt about everything that has happened with the band.
Fortunately, I really enjoyed writing both of these fics, which is the important part!
I was going to tag followers, but realized that I’m really shit at knowing which ones of you write fanfic at all. So if you feel like doing this, do it, and let me know, so I can come read your stuff!

Imagine rooming with Johnny and Vic with The Relentless are on tour
If any of the Relentless' fans could see what the band's lead singer and guitarist were doing after having performed a raucous and electrifying sold-out show, they would probably get whiplash from the huge shift in tone before them.
With the band having a day off before having to travel to the next venue, fans were probably scouring the city's various clubs and bars in the hopes of running into the band at one of these places and getting lucky enough to spend the night with one of them. And if Ricky's text were any indication, then fans were, as he complained to Johnny and Vic, in a separate group chat from the band's, about how lucky the two were to not share a wall with Leo and Dylan.
The atmosphere in the duo's room was the opposite of Leo and Dylan's as Vic lay on the left side of the king-sized bed, one leg propped up as he strummed the strings of his guitar in a soft melody while Johnny lay on the right side, back resting against the headboard as he scrolled through his phone. The open middle space of the mattress was for the third occupant of the room — you — as you were finishing up getting ready for a quiet night in the bathroom.
The bathroom door opens and you exit with a shiver as you leave the heated and steam-filled room, wrapped only in a towel and damp hair spilling water droplets down your back, to make your way to your suitcase for your sleepwear. Glancing over at the bed when you hear Vic no longer strumming, you see him checking you out, his eyes following the water droplets that dripped down your hair to the valley between your cleavage, disappearing under the towel. When his gaze reaches your face, you raise your eyebrow at him and give him a wink which causes him to blush, quickly looking away and goes back to playing his guitar.
With a smile, you crouch down near the end of the bed where you placed your suitcase and begin to rifle through it.
"What are you smiling at, Johnny," You ask, having noticed him silently laughing to himself.
He raises his phone in response. "Ricky. He's been messaging the two of us and complaining about how his room is right next to Leo and Dylan's." Johnny sits up more, clears his throat, and tries to do a British accent. "I'm wearing earplugs and have the tv as high as I can have it and I can still hear those twats."
Both you and Vic laugh, partly because of Ricky's messages and partly because of Johnny's terrible accent. Vic sets his guitar beside the bed and sits up as well to join the conversation.
"Poor Ricky," You say, moving to stand again, clothes in hand.
"And that's why it's always better to be on a separate floor than those two. Learned that lesson the hard way." Johnny's face shifts into a grimace, shuddering as the memory pops into his mind.
Vic leans against the headboard, arms behind his head as a mischievous twinkle appears in his eyes. "Leo and Dylan do have the right idea though."
Johnny looks confused, not understanding Vic's implication though you do, a smile growing on your face at Vic's train of thought. "I completely agree. Why don't we burn off the extra energy from the show too?"
Vic gives you a wide grin and crawls over to you, kneeling at the end of the bed. He traces the bottom of your towel, his fingers ghosting over your thigh. "You know, I was feeling a bit jittery." He looks over his shoulder to glance at the singer. "Don't you agree?"
Johnny is quick to nod, finally understanding what the two of you are talking about, and makes his way to the both of you. Humming his agreement, he reaches over, holds the end of your towel, and gives it a gentle tug. Both he and Vic watched with mesmerized eyes as the towel falls to the floor and leaves you bare for them to gaze upon.

BIPOC PEOPLE IN THE ROCK MUSIC INDUSTRY
Post inspired by, and is an extension of this lovely post about POC emo icons by @rpf-bat. If I get anything wrong, please feel free to correct me. I’m going to try to keep the bios relatively short and sweet so I don’t write an entire essay. All my information was found from Google/Spotify search results or my pre-existing knowledge. Feel free to DM me for specific sources. Fair Use for educational purposes, no copywright infringement intended.
Acrassicauda: Iraqi metal band from Baghdad. Andy Capper and Gabi Sifre wrote Heavy Metal in Baghdad: The Story of Acrassicauda about the band’s formation and their fight to be able to play the music they love.
Tumblr media
Booboo Stewart (Vic Lakota from The Relentless in Paradise City and American Satan, Seth Clearwater from The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Jay from Disney’s Descendants, among many others): Blackfoot, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.
Tumblr media
Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave, The Nightwatchman): biracial- Kenyan and white (quick side note: Morello has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Harvard, which I thought was really cool).
Tumblr media
The HU: Mongolian metal band. They’ve worked with the likes of Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach (The Wolf’s Totem), Lzzy Hale of Halestorm (Song of Women), and Danny Case of From Ashes to New (Yuve Yuve Yu).
Tumblr media
Jose “The Metal Ambassador” Mangin (radio personality/host and interviewer, Sirius XM): Mexican-American. Is often hosting on Sirius XM Octane and Liquid Metal.
Tumblr media
Meet Me @ The Altar: Pop punk trio made up entirely of BIPOC musicians Edith Johnson (Black), Téa Campbell (Black), and Ada Juarez (Latinx). Three of their popular songs are Hit Like a Girl, Feel a Thing, and Garden.
Tumblr media
Nandi Bushell: Zulu and white. The twelve year-old drummer has collaborated with Roman Morello, Tom Morello, Jack Black, and Greta Thunberg on Roman’s song The Children Will Rise Up! She has also played with the likes of Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Roger Taylor of Queen, Ringo Starr of The Beatles, and Matt Helders of The Arctic Monkeys (and likely more that I’m missing).
Tumblr media
Joe Hahn (Linkin Park, Mr. Hahn): Korean-American. The man behind the band’s turntables and keyboard. Linkin Park’s Cure for The Itch on their album Hybrid Theory (2000) specifically highlights Hahn on the turntables within the first minute.
Tumblr media
Ayron Jones: African-American. Jones is gaining traction in the scene. Two songs of his I’d like to note are Spinning Circles and Mercy from his 2021 album Child of the State. He has toured with the likes of Shinedown (and makes a hilarious feature in one of the band’s Tiktoks) and will tour with The Pretty Reckless and Black Stone Cherry this year.
Tumblr media
BIPOC ICONS
Chuck Berry (The Chuck Berry Trio, Sir John’s Trio) Black. Widely successful, influential singer and guitarist known for Johnny B. Goode, You Can Never Tell, and No Particular Place To Go. Berry’s legacy is still deeply felt in his contemporaries today.
Prince (Prince and The Revolution, “The Artist Formerly Known as Prince,” 3rdeyegirl, Madhouse, 94 East, The Family) Black. Groundbreaking, inventive, and androgynous artist known for hits like When Doves Cry and Purple Rain. Prince has also written songs for others like Sinead O’Connor (Nothing Compares 2 U) and The Bangles (Manic Monday).
Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys, Kings of Rhythm, Jimmy James and The Blue Frames): Black and Cherokee. Acknowledged by many to be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) guitarists of all time.
Slash (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver, Spinal Tap, Road Crew, and entirely too many others to list): biracial- Nigerian and white. He’s the guitarist for Guns N Roses, whose hits include (but are not limited to) Welcome to The Jungle and Sweet Child O’ Mine. He joined his bandmates of Guns N’ Roses Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum in the early 2000s to form Velvet Revolver, recruiting Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots for vocals. He continues to release music, especially with Myles Kennedy of Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators and Alter Bridge (see Driving Rain).
Robert Trujilo (Metallica, Suicidal Tendencies, Mass Mental, Infectious Grooves): Mexican and unspecified Native American descent. Trujilo replaced Jason Newsted as guitarist for Metallica, starting as a full time recording member with St. Anger (2003).
Carlos Santana (Santana): Mexican-born Latinx. A legendary guitarist, Santana’s song Smooth featuring Matchbox Twenty’s Rob Thomas is still an incredibly popular hit to this day. A prolific part of the song is Santana’s guitar work at the beginning of and throughout the song. The riff is considered to rather iconic to rock music as a genre.
Freddie Mercury (Queen): Indian Parsi, born in Zanzibar. Mercury is also considered to be an LGBTQIA+ icon by many. He was a groundbreaking and charismatic performer (not to mention his prolific appearance and fashion). His absolute powerhouse of a voice behind Queen’s innumerable hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, We Will Rock You, and We Are The Champions earned Mercury a deity-like status in both the music industry and pop culture as a whole. He continues to influence and inspire many in the decades since his death.
To all my BIPOC beauties/handsome people:
You exist in this industry. You belong. Do not let anyone in this scene erase or invalidate you.

How I would've handled American Satan and Paradise City if I was in charge: a not so short, incomplete list.
Have some build up to Johnny's addiction cause weed to HEROIN is wild😭
Make it clear that Lily is bi and lied about being a lesbian to get in the band because "iTs iMpLiEd" isn't good enough for me
Show the build up of the attraction between Johnny and Lily. They showed some but I want moreeeeee
Either change Johnny and Lily's first sex scene completely or ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGE IT WAS ASSAULT
Like seriously, Johnny's spiral would've made so much more sense if it was written as him unable to cope with the trauma, gaslighting and victim blaming. And him turning to Lily because in his own warped justification, she is the only one who "cares"
More stuff with mama Faust's cancer cause they flew by that shit.
More supernatural stuff in the show or none at all. The middle ground bs was confusing for even people who watched the movie
MORE VIC RELIGIOUS TRAUMA
More about the Mavens and a lot more about Sheva because her character was so interesting????
More of a note for the fans but STOP ACTING LIKE GRETCHEN WAS A BAD PERSON FOR MAKING JOHNNY GO TO COUPLES COUNSELING???
More honest conversations with Gretchen and Johnny about their relationship
Not kicking Lily out of the band because that shit was stupid and made things worse
Having Lily and Johnny actually work through things
Maybe have Lily come to a counseling session
Lily needed therapy jfc
If we go with the assault angle then maybe have her realize that it was assault(it feels like she either was too high to realize what she had done, or rationalized to where it was still "her fault" but it was consensual
More interaction with Johnny and Vivian
More dad Faust
ACTUALLY TELL GRETCHEN ABOUT FAITH JFC
Character development for Johnny pls. It kept going back and forth and it was like Ash couldn't decide if he wanted Johnny to be a good person or not
MORE STUFF ABOUT JOHNNY'S SOBRIETY!!!!!
I want to see Johnny struggling, maybe even see him almost relapse.
More studio stuff, and pls for the love of God make it more realistic
LOSE THE SHITTY ACCENT, ASH. THAT WAS CRINGE
More sex
No freezing jizz cause first of all that kills the sperm so wtf you gonna do with it??? And secondly tf were they gonna use it for in the first place????
More Vic stuff
#biVic
We know Vic is in love with Johnny, acknowledge it
It would be so messyyyyyyyy
A flashback to Vic kissing Johnny while Johnny was high so he remembers it, but Johnny doesn't so tension
MAKE VIC AND SHEVA A THING
PLS
Tbh do more with the Simon storyline cause that felt lackluster
