8-CHERAMAR PERUMAL
Chapters 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 , 7 || Character Index
Though the coronation was conducted on small scale without the usual celebrations, they all were in a festive mood. Veera Pandyan's pattamahishi Panchavan Madevi and junior queens distributed pearl jewellery and silk clothes to the soldiers. Ravidasan too got a few necklaces, rings and clothes. Jatilan's sisters' marriages were fixed and the attendants of the princesses distributed specially made sweets to everyone. It was the first time that he met the princesses who were usually looked after by the female guards.
Even when he received a birudam, Ravidasan was unable to enjoy it or concentrate fully on the festivities. Sundara Cholan was living rent free in his head. The Emperor introduced Ravidasan and other guards to his grandfather who gifted them gold bangles and red silk shawls which they tied to their waist on the behalf of his son, the reigning Perumal.
Ravi Varmar joked that Ravidasan should be suspended from service because people might think that Veera Pandyan has no respect for his grandfather if they hear him calling out for "Ravi". He almost burst into tears but Ravi Varmar laughed and assured him that it was just a joke. Sometimes the old king dispensed wisdom like a seasoned statesman and behaved like a not-so-cute puppy at other times.
Nonetheless, when Menandros said that Ravidasan should go ahead of the main contingent and make arrangements to escort Ravi Varmar in his journey across the Pandya nadu, he felt very proud. But his enthusiasm turned to confusion when he saw the itinerary. Cheramar will conduct prayers for Uttama Seeli's salvation and Sundaran's safety. After that, they need to go to the northern border where the old king will be recieved by Cholas. Can't he pray for Cholas from their territory? Whose side is he really on?
"I guess he will then visit Iratta Mandalam and exchange pleasantries with Kannara Devan too".
"Right. Perumal is planning to go to Thirumunaipadi after paying a visit to Paranthakan".
"Forgive me if I am wrong. There are no permanent friends and enemies in politics. Yet . . . isn't this a bit excessive?"
"When Maravarmar first wore the crown, I was younger than you. Chakravarthy too was young and longing to conquer the whole world. Do you know what did we do first?"
"Sacked Kodumbaloor?"
"No, first we went to Kongu and plundered Vanchi. This Ravi Varmar was a prince then. We were successful, but he chased us away. At last we had to go to the same man begging for asylum ".
Everyone knew that story. After Paranthakan defeated him, the Emperor fled to Lanka and deposited the crown jewels there. Later he went to Ravi Varmar, who had ascended the throne by then. He was given asylum and a younger princess in marriage.
"So, behave. Don't utter anything disrespectful".
**********************
"It is Iravi Kothai, not Goda Ravi. When you are making the proclamation in Tamil, you must use the Tamil form of the name".
"I know".
"Is the abhishekanamam still applicable even after abdication? Is it right to call him the King of Kings of all nadu from Kolathu Nadu to Ay Nadu? "
"Yes".
"Don't forget to call our Veera Pandyar 'Ugra Chakravarthy' and 'Veera Keralan'.
"Anipathi, why don't you do your duty and let me do mine? I know how to make a proclamation", the annoyed herald was throwing a tantrum. Ravidasan asked him to write down the complete announcement and show it to Pallavaraiyar. He was hoping that the herald was worth all this trouble because he too was unsure about the titles.
The village head returned with the girls who are supposed to take arathi and shower flowers when the dignitaries enter the village.
"Children, show this annan how will you welcome our Emperor's grandfather".
Oh god! They were holding plates filled with leaves. Before he could say anything, they started their rehersal by throwing leaves everywhere.
"Fabulous! Perfect! Now my sweet angels, please sweep the floor and clean all these".
Another irksome matter that perturbed him was the lack of curd. As they didn't give enough notice to the villagers, they were unable to produce enough curd to feed the troops. Though he made sure that there will be enough curd and buttermilk for the dignitaries, it will be embarassing if Perumal's aayiram tell this to their Chola brethren.
He stationed the guards across the border and some villagers near the adjacent forest area. Let the soldiers with Pallavaraiyar perform the ceremonial duties. Luckily, the visit was uneventful and pleasant. There was a group of girls and soldiers performing the Guard of Honour to welcome the king at the other side. The Chola herald announced the titles of their King, guest and the dignitaries who were present to welcome him- Ravi Varmar's sister, Paranthakan's Udaiya Pirattiyar Kilanadigal and a Perumpatai Nayakan Velan Kumaran.
Everyone heaved a sigh of relief as the Cheramar's retuine and the Chola troops disappeared into the distance. Tired soldiers and the villagers who made the arrangements sat down to have dinner. Ravidasan was so tired that he felt like lying down right there and sleeping. But he couldn't forget Perumal's parting words.
"We will never meet again".

Kali -from the beginning of time
The story begins from the times primordial, the origin of everything from the abstraction of nothingness. The concept of creation roots back to the time when desire emerged in the Supreme Force to be multitudinous. our creation is the result of the kamana that crept up in the mind of the singular, Primordial Entity. The Upannishads quoth
Ekaki na Ramate
Cha kamayate : Eko’ham, bahu syam.
Meaning anyone who is alone is not happy. I desire that since I am alone, let me be many.
Thus, the Para Brahman split into two : the Supreme Goddess and Supreme Lord. This Lord waited for the right time to be manifested while the Goddess relesed all her vivacity into the creation. Energies of the world was now released into a singularity, which was smaller and denser than anything we can imagine.
The goddess resembled depths undiscovered, and assumed the form of mysterious darkness, having a thousand faces and limbs. This Adyaa or primordial form of the goddess is known as Mahakali, or Adyaa Kali.
Now,Let me narrate the story of Bhadrakali...
The goddess now harmonized her supremacy to create a deity resembling her attributes, but manifested as a male force, the one of the Three Supreme purushas, Maha Vishnu. The goddess made him indulge into her Maya, her power, and Maha Vishnu was put to sleep in a divine slumber, the Yoganidra, by the Yogic powers of Yogmaya Mahakali.
When Brahma, another member of the Trinity, was just created from the lotus-navel of MahaVishnu, he was sheer inane. He was just like an infant, unknown to exactly what his purpose was. However, he was but a child, and his urger for a populous world full of care was also like any other human new born. But here, the new born Brahma was to become the progenitor to satisfy his own desire of a populous world. He did not know so, but saw glimpses of the creation (that he was to endeavour for) in the all overwhelming smile of the dark goddess on whose lap was he seated as was all that was existing and was yet to exist. In the laughter of the omnipotent mother he say glimpses of the creation and his desires began to grow passionately intense. He began the creation. He urged the Mother Mahakali to help him. So, she appeared as Maa Kushmanda and released the celestial objects from her smile (essentially from her tongue), ie, from Mahakali or the rooted omnipresent dark energy was released the percievable mass and strength which led Mahakali to be manifested as the illuminati Kushmanda.
However soon, the demons Madhu and Kaitabha arose from the dust in the ears of Vishnu, who was absolutely unaware of the incidents, slumbering divinely. These pig-ignorant beings tormented Brahma, who called out to Kushmanda for succour. Now, Kushmanda entered Sri Vishnu's ears, adsorbing all the dust to awaken him. Once again rose the goddess of dark complexion, who wakened Vishnu, and inducing her maya, she lead Madhu and Kaitabha to their doom all by themselves. This form of Kali is calm and the bestoyer of Maya to devise divine ploys so that she may create events and attributes to her wishful choices. Thus she is Bhadrakali, or the calm Kali or the Yogamaya Kali.
Bhadrakali appears in the following descriptions too
Upon coming to know that her father Daksha was planning a yajna to insult Shiva, Sati became clearly determined to refute her father's opinions. She, Mother of the creation, knew that no world would be equilibriated without Destruction, her husband Shiva, who was the complete manifestation of the Supreme Lord as Mahakala. However, as Shiva refused to let Sati visit her father and question him, Sati was hurt. To top this all, Shiva camouflaged his fear of losing Sati behind the arrogant voice of a dominating husband. She flared up and revealed to Shiva her very primordial form. As a glaring illumination emanated from Sati, she stood no more in front of Shiva as the same benevolent wife, clad in all the earthly indulgences . No longer was she bedecked in jewels of gold but a garland of apes and men alike, she revealed the Ugra form of Mahakali in herself. Howbeit, as Shiva ran affrighted, Sati was struck with pity. She calmed down and stood before Shiva as somewhat sangfroid and soberly mild, yet dark as blue iris. This milder form of Mahakali is the 1st Mahavidya, Bhadrakali, who calmly spoke out to Shiva that he better calms down and relents his wife to live to her decisions. However, Shiva ran out of fright, only to be encountered by the rest of the 9 Mahavidyas.
Incidentally, the same Bhadrakali reappears when Shiva came to know about Sati's self immolation. After Shiva became the destroyer Panchanana and utilises a lock of his matted hair to create Veerbhadra, the latter becomes bound by Maha Vishnu at the Daksha Yajna site. To release him, Shiva invites Sati to reincarnate and avenge the wrong done to them. Sati's soul, that of the great Mahamaya, enters the 3rd eye of the North Face of Panchanana, and emerges as Bhadrakali, iris blue as the eye of the North Face of Panchanana Shiva. She is diplomatic in words, calmly frees Veerbhadra after an exchange of arguements on basis of justice. Next, she calmly fetches Daksha, brings him to Veerabhadra and again reunites with the lifeless body of Sati, yet housing all the divine vitality, to rid her worshipper’s body of all sins, proving the fullest blessings of the Mother Supreme.
The same Bhadrakali appears again in the slaying of Darik. He was a demon who ruled in the Darikavana, utilising the powers of his wife Mandodari, also called Daruki, and is not to be confused with Mandodari of Ramayana. The wife Daruki was a great devotee of the Goddess Parvati. Hence she attained immense powers though tapas and imparted the good of her yogic attributes to enable Darik stay overwhemingly poweful. Parvati blessed that he may remain undefeated unless rendered to her displeasure . However, he became so amorous and torturous to women that Parvati was troubled. To top it all, Darik captued and began torturing a snake-man , Supriyo, who was worshipping Shiva in his kingdom. This infuriated Shiva, who instantly came to save Supriyo in form of Nageswara jyotirlingam. Now, Parvati was humiliated to an ultimatum. She decided to teach Darik a lesson, for, by saying that Parvati would spare Darik provided he doesn't disrespect her, she meant her disregard in all respects, be her own self, her abode, or her beloved. And fool was Darik to assume that Shiva's devotee would repose not in Parvati,’s heart.
Into the third eye of Nageswara entered Parvati, and appered in a form of blue complexion, absorbing the colour of the Prussian hued poison in Shiva's neck. Again she stood as Bhadrakali, who slew Darik with great aplomb, yet did not lose her mind in the liquidation of the fool asura. She remained clam and did not continue the blood-shed once Darik met his end. Bhadrakali is thus the exact bearer of her duties.
As Bhadrakali Parvati indulged in her happy domiciliary life with Shiva at Kailasa, Daruki began to practice severe austerities to propitate Shiva, that she may avenge the death of her love.
Now, let me narrate the story of Bhadrakali's transformation into Ugra Kali. We shall again come back to the Daruki episode later.
In the meantime, Sumbha and Nisumbha began their abuse. The maltreated world, afflicted with misery, cried out for help. To top it all, they attacked the Gods while the son of Ugrasena, Kamsa, took over the mortal world. Such was their tyranny that every nook and cranny resonated with cries for relief.
The Gods approached Kali Parvati as she was going to take a dip in Mansarovar . She manifested herself from the Kosha or cells of her body, appearing as the wheatish complexioned, the radiant Kaushiki. As Kali remained in yogic trance, Kaushiki went to serve her task.
Kaushiki took birth as the daughter of Yashoda while Sri Vishnu manifested as Krishna, taking birth from Devaki's womb. As Krishna's father interchanged the children, Kansa appeared to kill Devaki’s 8th child, prophesised to be his death itself. Having already killed her previous 6 children and thinking her to have miscarried the 7th pregnancy, finally he would become immortal, thought he. However, as Kamsa took the girl in his hands as was about to thrash her to death, she flew out of his grip. A thunderous laughter of the celestial lady overwhelmed all directions as she proclaimed that his death incarnate was intact , and disappeared.
She went to to the Vindhya Mountains and assuming the form of a very young girl, a Kumari, she slept her Yogic slumber. The trinity performed the Kumari Puja to awaken the damsel Goddess. The Goddess rose as a young maiden, with the attributes of MahaSaraswati, and lured the demons. As Sumbha and Nisumbha sent a marriage proposal, she rebuked it and invited them to fight. Instigated, they sent their comarades to fight, but all were sent to the abode of death by the Eight Warrior Sisters whom Kaushiki created, headed by the skeleton-thin, fierce, blood-red necked Chamunda, the slayer of Chanda and Munda. However, quite opposed to the common notion that Chamunda is same as Ugra Kalika, she is not. They are similar in their dark complexion but different in genesis and their seed syllables. Chamunda was created by Kaushiki from her eyebrows and after the slaughter Of the asuras, she reabsorbed Chamunda into herself. Whereas Kaushiki herself arose from the Bharman within the Koshas of Kalika. This Kalika gets enraged and becomes the Ugra Kalika. Moreover, the physique of the goddesses differ in the sense that Kali is described as a plum woman, having full breasts and a youthful radiance of the feminine; while Chamunda has a thin, malnourished appearance with protruding ribs . However, both Ugra Kalika and Chamundika have fearsome expressions and are extremely stormy, angry and malevolent in destruction of the negative elements of the Universe . The emergence of Ugra Kali in the story is as follows …
When Raktabija arrived at the battlefield, Kaushiki went on stabbing him with her trident but with the flow of hus blood rose thousands of Raktabijas. So, she invoked Kali Parvati. Kali Parvati woke up on the banks of Mansarovar and incarnated on the battlefield as Ugra Kali. She slew all the raktabijas abd drank their blood. The drops that fell were consumed by jackals following her.
Kaushiki then killed Sumbha and Nisumbha. Meanwhile, Ugra Kali became extremely stormy and aggressive. The dance of her feet struck sheer destruction on Earth. Her tongue lolled out in desire to consume more blood. This signifies how Kala or time dissolutes into the goddess of time . Her all devouring tongue signifies the all engulfing Kala or time.
Finally, to pacify her, Shiva lay as a corpse at her feet. This shows how Shiva or Purusha is just a corpse without Shakti or Prakriti. Stepping on Shiva, whom she loved dearly and placed him in her bossom, the malevolent act aroused a perdurable sense of guilt for causing pain to her love. She bit her tongue in guilt, as Kalika is portrayed for popular worship.
As Ugra Kali calmed back into Bhadrakali, she retreated into the forests of Darukavana, guilty of having performed such unnecessary destruction and having harmed the Purusha of her heart.
It was here that Daruki was performing tapas to appease Shiva and avenge Darik's death. Shiva was forced by her tapas to grant her a boon. Daruki asked for a boon to avenge her husband's death. Shiva, the Ashutosha, got quickly satisfied. He was already preoccupied with thoughts so as to console his consort, who was troubled by what she had done and was residing somewhere in the same Darukavana. Shiva gave Daruki few drops of his sweat, such that one when sprinkled by which would be afflicted with tremendously irritable and painful eruptions on one's appearance.
Daruki now sought for Bhadrakali. Finding her, Daruki sprinkled on Bhadrakali Shiva's sweat. As a result, she was Bhadrakali was extremely pained by the blistering eruptions in likeness of chicken pox. Anguished , she questioned Shiva , in the trauma of her maim, what wrong she had done in punishing Darik that too in compliance with Shiva's wish.
Shiva sent Ghantakarna, one of his ganas to medicate and remove her rashes, which detrimented and saddened Bhadrakali Parvati all the more, for she knew not what caused Shiva not to come himself, unknown to the fact that Lord Indra had come to meet Shiva. Hence she sent the gana back.
Indra, the king of Gods, wished to send some apsaras to assist Shiva help console Bhadrakali. As Shiva approached her, he found the fair complexioned apsaras advancing , and he addressed his consort as the ‘O dear Kalike, my Dark One’, and called out to the apsaras as “ O ladies of divine radiance as fair as the pristine snow, the possessor of Divine Arts, I hope you shall take no offence in assisting me to serve my little woman here… she is quite pained. ”
Bhadrakali-Parvati took offence at seemingly racist comment . She believed Shiva was mocking at her black complexion and that Shiva too was harnessing the traditional mortal belief that fairness was beauty and became depressed and dolorously declared,--- “since i am such an ugly burden to you that you can take such liberties with me as afflicting me with quite an incessant pain and since you again look down upon me in public; it is better that you may stay without me forever. As for the scars of these boils I have on my soma, let it stay forever thus, blemishing my skin to mark how REALLY BEAUTIFUL I AM.”
Bhadrakali retired to Kanchipuram as a yogini and began penance beneath a mango tree , dedicated to a Shiva lingam she made out of sand . The greatest of all Yoginis as Parvati is, her anger, the force of destruction, the primordial energy of the most intense enigma, i.e., the darkness that comprises the depth of the unkown where all converges into and diverges from, is all lost within Parvati and she becomes the fair maiden. This incident does Not eulogise racism but denotes the fact that Parvati is not ashamed of her colour, be it as the fair Parvati or the Dark Mahakali. Quite opposed to popular notions that Parvati was born Dark…, Parvati was the FAIR born Goddess Mahakali, she was fair and not dark from birth. It is a simple fact and no comment made on the preferred colour of the skin. Hence she simply reverts to her original form.
I intend to end this narrative on a more softer and delicate note, the story of their reunion after the episode of Shiva-Parvati’s previous fall out.
Narada, the divine mischief maker, sage of the gods, visited the Yogini Parvati, who was now her original self. She was, by now, terribly missing Shiva and having carved out a sand Shiva linga to be consoled by his physical appearance near her, was now continuing her penance with grit and determination so that no force might deter her from extracting one just sorry from her beloved.
Narada however ployed some fun and notified the Goddess that Shiva was not at all unhappy without her company. Rather, he showed no signs of grief in her absence. The fair Parvati, dedicated and dolorous to hear this, sat down to concentrate in an even deeper meditation.
Shiva was woebegone at his loneliness, would watch Parvati from the branches of the mango tree. Unable to bear it any longer, he called upon Ganga to break Parvati's penance. As Ganga tried her best to counsel her sister, the latter showed no signs of budging from her trance. With every passing moment, she was becoming even more radiant and was as if on a journey to get re-incarnated as a maiden, with a newly youthful glory. She had as though made up her mind to test Shiva with her allure and check if it were only the outward beauty which appealed to him or he was actually the very ascetic she loved so dearly.
Ganga, unable to break Parvati's austerities, decided to flow in and flood the area with all her force, her waves smashing into the Shiva ling to destroy its sculpture. At this, Parvati woke up with a start, and assimilating all the love she So dearly cherished in her heart, hugged the lingam with her youthful nurture, in form of his eternal inamorata. She thus emerged as Kamakshi.
Ganga notified her of Shiva's longing and advised her that she need not have changed to prove in adverse to Shiva's heart, for the heart of her man loved her in all her attributes and that she was not to be objectified, neither should she have given in to this objectification, nor was she at all objectified by the PARAMA Purusha Shiva.
Parvati, nurtured in good counsel, decided to test the same and visited Shiva in her renewed manifestation as an young damsel of 16, named Sorashi, the queen of all seasons, the 2nd of the 10 Mahavidyas, who is the same as Kamakshi.
As Sorashi asks Shiva who resides in his heart, she finds the imagery of the damsel she is in the guise of- — the beauty of Sorashi. Just as Parvati is downcast to find that outer beauty is what seemed to be appealing for Shiva, a closer glance revealed the picture in Shiva's heart to be Kali, the primordial, and then Parvati, as she had always been and ever shall be . Sorashi's heart melted and with it was washed away the misunderstanding that separated them . She reverts back to Parvati, in whose form she became the consort of the householder Shiva.
Thus were the Purusha and Prakriti reunited…

I tried to make my own moodboard, inspired by the works of @earthstellar and @milabazal2002 check them their moodboards are great! Click for better quality
Anyway, heres Ugra - the cold part of Russia. Its located in the West Siberian Plain, and snow is the perfect description for this place. However, I am lucky that I love the cold. My nickname is Sever, which can be translated as North (Север)
Upper Left: An interesting building located in Surgut (the largest city in Ugra) similar to Big Ben. It has always amused me, though I'm not sure why it was made.
Upper Center: technically a constant picture in any city of Ugra in winter, when the temperature drops to -40 degrees Celsius. All the trees are completely white, like the streets, and at night, in the illumination of the city's lanterns, it looks magical
Upper Right: Photo of the full moon, taken by me personally. The moon rarely appears here because of the clouds, as precipitation occurs very often in this part of Siberia. It turned out well in my opinion
Middle Left: Photo of Surgut, which, as it happened, has the most beautiful photos, if you need to describe Ugra
Middle Center: Reindeer! Photo taken from the film dedicated to Ugra. I can't find the site where this video is anymore, but you can search if you want. The indigenous peoples of the Khanty and Mansi (where the name of the district came from) lived (and still live now) on the territory of Ugra. They fish and breed reindeers (i hope that how they call this species of deer)
Middle Right: A beautiful bridge again located in Surgut, if my memory serves me right, in the very center of the city
Bottom Left: Another photo I took on a winter evening! You can find it in this post, if you wanna see my other photos
Bottom Center: Winter northern forest! Nature has always been my weakness, despite my love for transformers. For which I especially love nature in Siberia - these are Spruces and Pines. They are much easier and more enjoyable to draw than any other trees.
Bottom Right: and again a photo of the sunset taken by me in the forest. I rarely go to nature because of frost or busyness, but if I succeed, then I am very happy about it. Pros of visiting the forest in winter: the absolute absence of mosquitoes and midges. Since Ugra is located in swamps, these creatures are everywhere in summer and they are a real problem for me
No, I won't get tired of talking about how I love snow and night, excuse me: p

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium responsible for the development of gastritis that may further progress to more severe conditions, peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer [1,2]. H. pylori have infected from 80% to 90% of the population in Russia [3]. Despite the ongoing discussion on which H. pylori infected patients should be treated up till full eradication of the infection, eradication depending on the prevalence of strains resistant to antibacterial preparations using for treatment [4]. Currently, the eradication of H. pylori is managed by the use of a triple therapy, involving the co-administration of two antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor or bismuth during ten or fourteen days [4,5]. The resistance of H. pylori to antibiotic is a key problem to all bacteria, gaining importance if leads to treatment failure [6]. Even with the current most effective treatment regimens, about 10% to 20% of patients will fail to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection [7]. The study of eradication failure in Russian Federation was not found, more over in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Ugra was not found as well. The most prescribed preparations are the Macrolides, Fluoroquinolones, Amoxicillin, Nitroimidazoles, Tetracycline among others. At the same time among the antibiotics applied in schemes of eradication H. pylori of the first line, most the problem of resistance is particularly actually to a Clarithromycin [8]. According to work of De Francesco and others in the world population the following indicators of resistance of H. pylori to antibiotics in schemes of eradication therapy Table 1 are noted [9].

some elaborate dreams that i wrote down elsewhere:
8/13/21 dream
gayatri and amma were visiting us in texas. we were walking outside and i was telling them about temples i could take them to. i described the hanuman temple (i gestured with my arms to portray how vast it was) and the guruvayurappan one (it would be the last day of adi masam, so i said that could be cool) and one other one, they told me that they didn’t want to go to the DFW ekta mandir again. then i remembered that i could take them to the lalita peetam.
we all went together, the four of us. the temple was normal stuff, but lalita devi was in the left corner. we all sat around. it was pretty busy for a saturday.
then the priest opened up the side of the temple. there was an entire other set of ummachis. radha krishna and rama parivar. there was a durga alone as one of the layers. he could press a button and everything changed, like a set. we were amazed. i wanted to come here every saturday.
at some point i visited gayatri’s and amma’s apartment. i knew they’d moved in a while back but they were just settling in. gayatri was showing me how she kept her bookshelf and other items so she could reach and find things easily around the place. we talked a bit. it was a nice spring day.
temple moving between layers again. now many seats appeared and a stage came out. it was a low stage. i was trying to show everything to them. i think i went to the bathroom at some point.
these kids were all at the front of the temple. they were putting on some dancing. there were white young adult kids there too and i think i knew them or they’d asked me some questions. the young woman explained that she was going to do a general dance style after her bharatanatyam piece, and the first 6 seconds would be a prayer to the guru. the priest was standing on the side the whole time. a bunch of people came out and started dancing, their coordinated outfit was dark blue sequined.
somewhere towards the end of the performance, there was a clamoring. gayatri had taken $16,000. it was the temple’s money but it was somehow appa’s money actually. she snooped in the back room, saw the bills, and just took them. i was enraged. i chased her down up the audience seats and got the money back.
something happened. then towards the end the priest called out to just me. he took me to the back, near the main temple again. he asked me what was going on. i was tired and then this altercation. he seemed to understand that something wasn’t going on right at home.
i was deeply moved by this. i didn’t say much, but the entire time i wished that i had grown up around him. i wish someone had been there for me like that in indiana (it was still reality in the dream, but i seem to have understood the reality of my life at that point).
he didn’t get much out of expressing concern. but in the end he said some special mantrams for me. he pressed something against my chest too. there were other people at the temple. this felt like a kavacham. i left with appa only after that and everything fizzled out.
8/21/21 dream
we were at this temple. it was me and gayatri or something. there were these kids like the AVG NextGen kids. i sat on the ground for some bhajans. i was coming in and then leaving? it was like i was paying a short regular weekly visit.
i kept wanting to go next door. it was like india, lots of outdoorness and small temples. this temple was run by krishna das white people. i didn’t really want to go all the way in because they had their own weird thing. but i wanted to go see by the front where there was an orange stone hanuman. the hanuman had so many eyes. i went in but wasn’t brave enough to go in far. and then i went in again and was able to see ummachi.
i came back to this first temple. there was some guy i was with or around who was nice and understanding. we were distant though, but we were close. we chatted and there might have been sexual tension. i know we were in the temple but i don’t remember the temple then. but i went around and prayed. afterwards the guy talked to me. we were trying to be intimate or something. i liked him a lot and he had no real qualities but being nice and sweet to me.
at some point i went to use a public restroom. suddenly in the stall next to me, very typical black people were having sex passionately. the stalls shook. i looked through the cracks to catch a glimpse of the glistening and muscular black man behind her. but they were then outside the stall. i wanted to keep watching but i left the restroom because other people also rushed out in horror. i was more interested than appalled.
i was wearing gold eyeliner smeared around my eyelids and eyes.
at some point, sundaresh texting me trying to make plans. but i was staying and i was leaving and i didnt have much interest either.
i then went to a small temple. it was nepali and deserted. we got there before the priest. it seemed to have a lot of sannidhis. we went around once and i was close and interested to the murtis. there was a lot of fire around me, not just deepam but huge pillars of flickering fire that enveloped the murtis and sannidhis or that were the murtis themselves. there was some tourist family around us. i think i was with appa. i was spending time closely with the murtis, but was wearing big basketball shoes. these shoes were consciously on my feet, but i forgot about them. but after the priest and others came into the temple, appa exclaimed and i ran to take off my shoes.
then there was this black man. he was also touristy but showed interest to be a convert. the priest answered some of his questions.
we were still there for some reason. the priest handed appa a water cup to give the shivalingam abhishekam. it was a small gray shivalingam that was different. i went up after appa to try but i didn’t want to cut the line because the black guy and some other indian were in line after. then the priest started opening up the sannidhis and letting us come close. we went up to a few murtis that i don’t remember anymore. but one sannidhi he let us in really close. it was Saraswati Devi, but She was dark and different. like the nepali style with some demonic forces around and within her. the priest explained that she was an ugra saraswati or at least that saraswati is not as sweet as most conceive her to be. the black guy seemed to know, as he was in the area and mentioned that he read that her complexion was never white. i kept looking at Her, but it felt so museum-like. i felt outside. i couldn’t connect to her. i was trying to process (maybe like i was trying to remember my dream as i had it, soaking in every detail). the murti was so black and dark and different. i don’t remember Her face and i never tapped into Her energetic field.
reasons i had these dreams: appa mentioned that the vedas worshipped fire, i saw Willow’s saraswati tattoo on tiktok, surya mentioned dreams and ugra deity dreams

Wendell in the Bardo
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/wendell-in-the-bardo/
Wendell in the Bardo
Tumblr media
For a story published last year in the New York Times, designer Wendell Rodricks, now no more, spoke mystically to journalist Sarah Khan about the house he had lived in for the last 24 years with his partner Jerome Marrel. A 400-year-old structure, formerly called Casa Dona Maria in Colvale, Goa, it had belonged to a lady named Olinda Braganza. Wendell had seen the house in a dream and would later visit it to take Mrs Braganza around her own home and narrate intimate details that no one could have known. No one but someone who had lived there before. In spirit or flesh.
Some years later, Braganza wanted to sell the house, but only to Wendell. “A dream leads to a house. A house leads to a book. A book leads to a museum,” Wendell told Khan. “That doesn’t happen often in people’s lives unless dharma decides it.”
Wendell often spoke about dreams intersecting realities. Of the fashion industry and Moda Goa, the museum of Goan costumes and jewellery from pre-Portuguese rule to now, that he was painstakingly and passionately putting together over the years. He would later bring in an architect company, an archiving firm and a board of advisors. Brick by breath, with time and team, ebb or tide, with penitent patience and the perseverance of a man possessed.

State of consciousness
Where is Wendell now, four days after his untimely passing at 59 years? A death that shocked the Indian fashion industry, leaving many wrapped in dark grief. We may not know where he exactly rests but, by existentialist rumination, he will be in his house-home forever — Casa Wendell and Jerome in Colvale. In memories, laughter, warmth, shared or/and secret worries, photos, collectibles, in the silent wails of his bereft pet dogs (some who are dead, others alive), in the emotions of his friends who will visit Jerome.
In spirit, Wendell will also transit to Moda Goa that will house more than 800-plus costumes and articles he collected. When the doors finally open, visitors will feel and miss Wendell.
Nobody really dies as long as they live in the memories of those alive. It applies to Wendell, too. Now though, while he is presumably in ‘bardo’, the intermediary state between death and nirvana, we must rewind thoughts. Bardo, described in Tibetan Buddhist philosophy as a transitional stage between states of consciousness, resembles the idea of the Christian purgatory. “A temporary state after physical death for expiatory purification.” Not everyone agrees with these post-mortem projections.

However, in the days soon after a death, a person is remembered, eulogised, loved, missed and talked about persistently. That places a person in a transitional state. Wendell is in media and in minds. What he stood for, what shaped him, who he shaped, his whims and idiosyncrasies, his devotion to detail and the extraordinary hard work he put in becoming the man he wanted to be.
A friend who has eclipsed, a mentor who taught debutants the shallows and deeps of fashion, an ordinary man who loved food, then dieted and exercised, and loved East European cruises. Who lost no opportunity to proclaim love for his partner Jerome. A designer who created anti-embellished textiles in a country that worships bling. Who spoke for sustainability, simplicity in design and became the most known cultural ambassador of Goa. Who spoke his mind and bared his heart.
Wendell is in bardo because all these things are up in the air. Including the factoid that among Moda Goa’s collections is a seventh century Apsara found in a Colvale field where a Buddhist monastery once stood.

Thinker, designer, revivalist
I spent much of last night, unusually awake, burrowing into the transitional complexity of this theme to locate Wendell’s relevance in Indian fashion. The idea is not unique. I have been morbidly fascinated with death states since childhood due to my writer father’s melancholic personality and his death dialogues. That was why I read and reread George Saunders’ 2017 Man Booker-winning novel, Lincoln in the Bardo, with deep interest.
It surprises me in the research of my own work that a large of number of subjects I explored over the last two decades as a fashion journalist led me to Wendell now and again. Gay rights and fashion or unfashion. Size charts in India, the downsides and triumphs of modelling, his discovery of some of India’s top glamour names, textile innovation, authoring books, winning the Padma Shri in 2014. Sending out the reimagined Kunbi sari on the ramp on actor-model Lisa Ray, who was recovering from multiple myeloma. He held back tears when veteran crafts practitioner Jasleen Dhamija (with actor Nandita Das) spoke about the Kunbi project (a loom and weaver revival project that, from 2012, continued at the government polytechnic in Panjim) at the then Wills India Fashion Week in 2010 in Delhi.
Tumblr media
“This is not about commercial gain. Sometimes fashion needs to distance itself from finance that it feeds on so voraciously. When you see a Louis Vuitton or a Hermes Birkin bag, you think of money. When you see the Kunbi sari, you see a culture and a tribe,” he told me for a story for The Indian Express.
Then there was an offbeat story on secret couture owned by Indians for Mint Lounge. I have no idea why I reached out to Wendell. However, there he was talking about the clothes and accessories he was collecting for Moda Goa with pieces from private collections. It included a gold embroidered Bishop’s mitre, a gold coin pendant that dated back to the Knights of Malta circa 1500s, garments and jewellery from the last century.
Conversations would plod on, on the phone and in person. He would continue to send links to new fashion films, news and books via email. I enjoyed his witty, ironic, sometimes sardonic assessments of fashion as celebrity theatre. I loved the way he dressed his models but did not always admire how he undressed his remarks on social media.
Wendell is in bardo as these thoughts have bubbled up in no chronological order. Must have, in other minds too.
Tumblr media
With charm in plenty
A poignant one springs from 2015. My close friend, Sharda Ugra, a well-known sports journalist and I visited Wendell and Jerome at their Colvale residence for dinner. Earlier that day, I had picked up my long-ordered Kunbi sari from Wendell’s Retreat & Style store in Panjim, but didn’t have a white petticoat to do justice to its white field. I wore it with a red blouse and a dark petticoat. Sharda wore a hand blocked-printed sari.
We arrived, excited and mismatched. The house is built on different floor levels with an architectural grammar that compels you to look around to orient yourself. The whisky was fabulous, the dogs were delightful, and the irresistible Jerome in a checked lungi was just the kind of husband material one would need to make a case for marriage. I felt lightheaded and funny. Sharda was in great spirits, too. Wendell and Jerome spoke cricket with her and fashion with me. Life and death, Rekha and Sachin Tendulkar, Goa and Paris, masala mussels, multiple sclerosis, his muse Malaika Arora, books and bum trips, it all came up. Wendell talked about the “smallness” of two inches that makes women go mad if they gain that extra and how his fashion teacher in France, who called him “Mr Rodriguez”, asked him to design clothes for women who have hips.
Later that year, the hand-signed New Year card Jerome and Wendell would always send arrived with warm adjectives. An email preceded that. “Take care of the Kunbi. Cool wash on low spin short cycle. And don’t tear the manjistha strips for a wound. Wear with the happiness it was woven with…” wrote Wendell. Manjistha, the red vegetable dye, is derived from a plant with healing properties according to Ayurveda.
Quick to hurt from fashion industry barbs as to healing and moving on, the guru of persistence, Wendell Rodricks was Indian fashion’s Mr Diehard.
Then God cast the die.

Are you sure your wealth belongs to you?
Here’s one translated article for this quarter.
Link: http://fodizi.net/fojiaogushi/23258.html
TRANSLATION STARTS
What constitutes wealth that truly belongs to you?
Do you find yourself penniless at the end of each month? Do you subscribe to the mantra: “Money only truly belongs to me if I spend it”? When you possess wealth, how do you use it? What constitutes wealth that truly belongs to you? In reality, the more money people accumulate, the stronger their attachment and fantasies pertaining to money become. So how do you use your wealth correctly? You have to understand what constitutes wealth that truly belongs to you. First and foremost, a positive karma is a part of your wealth. That is followed by faith, discipline, a sense of shame, your conscience, an eagerness to listen to the Buddha’s teachings, generosity and wisdom. These are the seven types of spiritual wealth which can solve the problems which you face in life.
-------
One day, a resplendent deva descended upon the Jetavana monastery and asked the Buddha, “What cannot be burnt by fire, blown away by the wind, or be lost if the very earth disintegrates? What kind of treasure cannot be stolen by covetous rulers and bandits?”
The Buddha replied, “Positive karma cannot be burnt by fire, be blown away by the wind, be stolen by covetous rulers and bandits, or be lost if the very earth disintegrates. Positive karma is the treasure which one cannot lose.”
-------
One day, the Buddha was in Shravasti City, the capital of the kingdom of Kosala, to receive alms. While staying in the Jetavana monastery. And Pasenadi, the king of Kosala, came to visit Him one in the late morning. The Buddha asked, “Your Majesty, it’s almost noon. What have you been busy with?”
The king said, “O Exalted One! Today, a rich man named Mahanama passed away in Shravasti City. He had no sons to inherit his wealth, so I went over to take over his belongings on behalf of the state. Do you know how much wealth he had? Eight million units (unspecified ancient unit of measurement) of gold and countless amounts of silver. However, what was surprising was that a rich man like him had survived on rancid porridge, dressed himself in line rags and rode on a broken-down carriage with a roof made of twigs and leaves. Nobody had heard of him donating to the Sangha, the Brahmin or the poor. It was said that he would close his doors to hide whatever he was eating during meal-times.”
The Buddha replied, “Your Majesty, then this man was not a proper human being. No matter what wealth he owned, he had behaved like a lowly pauper. He did not utilized his wealth, nor did he allow his family members to utilize it. He did not use it to care for his servants or to make new friends. He did not donate to the Sangha or the Brahmin to cultivate enough positive karma which would have allowed him to ascend to the heavenly realms in his next life. Since he did not spend his wealth wisely on the correct expenses, he could not keep it ultimately. It would have been confiscated by rulers, stolen by thieves, lost to fires and floods, or be inherited by someone whom he disliked.
When wealth is used in improper ways, it is equivalent to a useless object. It is akin to a pool of clean and sweet water hidden away in an obscure spot. Nobody can make use of it, and it will soon evaporate. How does it benefit anyone?
And so, one should use good use of his wealth. He should benefit himself, his family members, his servants and his friends. He should donate to the Sangha and the Brahmin so that he can cultivate enough positive karma to allow him to ascend to the heavenly realms in his next life. Only then can wealth become something beneficial and not make one’s life a pointless pursuit which wastes wealth.”
-------
One day, a minister named Ugra came to visit the Buddha. He said, “O Exalted One! I was surprised at the extent of Lord Migara’s wealth!”
The Buddha asked, “And what was the extent of Lord Migara’s wealth?”
Ugra said, “He had hundreds of millions of units of gold and countless amounts of silver.”
The Buddha replied, “Do these units of gold and silver count as his actual wealth? I am not saying that these things are not valuable, but what you have described can be taken away by fires, floods, covetous rulers, bandits, enemies and heirs. Only the seven treasures of faith, discipline, a sense of shame, your conscience, an eagerness to listen to Buddhist teachings, generosity and wisdom cannot be taken away.”
