Failure to Maintain Vehicle and Tyres Can Cost Owners Accident Payouts

With the current costs involved in buying vehicles in the first place, as well as those accrued when they have to be repaired or replaced, vehicle insurance may seem like a must have. According to Australian tyre recycler Chris Lett, it may be easy for vehicle owners to overlook worn tyres or delay replacing them for a while, but they won’t be overlooked by insurers if a claim is made, and that could cost the vehicle owner a great deal.

To make sure they’re signing up for the right insurance policy, Lett says vehicle owners should be careful to read the small print in the policy documents carefully for exclusions, and following the agreement, owners should be sure to keep the car well maintained, and it’s insurer up to date in terms of its condition, or any repairs or changes that were made that were not connected to a claim. Otherwise, payouts may be withheld.

Why Tyres and Changes Can Squash the Payout

Lett says warn tyres are a big disqualifier. Not only are they dangerous but it will guarantee an unsuccessful claim, which is one of the reasons why it is so important to regularly check them and ensure they meet the legal tyre safety standards.

He said the insurers who refuse payout when tyres are badly worn, justify this by citing how these tyres can raise the risk of collision by lengthening braking distance, damaging other vital parts, and loosening the vehicle’s grip on the road which can make it more likely to crash, slide or roll, particularly in wet weather, all of which are a valid argument.

When it comes to changes made to cars, Lett says: “Most owners don’t realise that modifications to the vehicle such as a repaint job, can also cause a claim to be rejected, as the vehicle is not the same vehicle that the insurer originally agreed to cover.” Lett advises checking with the insurer before making any changes to the vehicle.

Sometimes Vehicle Owners Don’t Have a Choice

To make sure the insurance taken out is the right one, vehicle owners do have a number of possible choices. But not when it comes to Comprehensive Third Party (or Green Slip insurance). All Australian car owners are required to have this, no matter which state they live in. CTP protects the driver from financial liability by covering the third parties involved if there’s an accident which results in injury.

This includes passengers in the insured vehicle as well as other drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians (and any passengers they have), and all those travelling on public transport. Depending on the assessment of the claim, CTP may cover a number of costs such as general damages (pain and suffering), rehabilitation, care costs, loss of income, medical treatment, funeral costs, and even financial support for the surviving spouse, partner or dependents in the event of a fatal crash.

However, as CTP does not cover vehicle and property damage, which can run into thousands, come into their thousands, Chris Lett of Branigans Tyres in Queensland, suggests motorists investigate having additional insurance to ensure peace of mind in such a situation.

Choosing an Additional Insurance

“The best option is the one that fits the vehicle owner’s needs the best,” explains Lett. Comprehensive car insurance, which offers the most protection, covers any vehicle damage caused by collision, malicious actions, theft, or weather, but it is also the most costly in terms of premiums, and therefore might not be warranted if the vehicle is old.

This leaves Third Party Property Only, which, as its name suggests, covers only damage to the other vehicle or property, but not the policy owner’s. Fire and Theft Only policies cover the policy owner’s vehicle for fire damage and theft, but there is no cover included for damage caused in a collision.

This is epic and well-made but also quite contrived.

That a super-god would create “synthetic robots” that have such flaws that will lead them to disobey their creator. Why are they created with speech impediment, or growth problem? Or even of those particular human ethnicities?

And that for 7000 years their personal issues with each other remain unresolved just so they can address them all at once in this movie. Why are they even programmed with traits that would lead to such drama?

Eternals

Disney et Marvel Studios ont battu des records l’année dernière avec leurs sorties de films super-héroïques, ils ne souhaitent toutefois que cela ne s’arrête pas là. Une fois de plus, Disney cherche à décrocher le prix du meilleur film aux prochains Oscars en mettant en avant Eternals de Chloé Zhao. La campagne officielle du film propose plusieurs catégories, dont celles du meilleur film, du meilleur réalisateur, de la meilleure photographie et une pléthore d’autres catégories couvrant presque tous les aspects possibles du film.

Ce ne serait pas le premier film de super-héros à tenter l’exploit. Black Panther a réussi à décrocher une nomination pour le meilleur film en 2019. Le film a également remporté certaines de ses autres nominations aux Oscars, notamment celles de la meilleure musique de film, du meilleur création de costume et du meilleur décor. Black Panther et Eternals sont tous deux reconnus pour leur casting diversifié et leurs effets visuels. Si elle est acceptée par l’Académie, il s’agira de la deuxième nomination de Chloé Zhao au titre de meilleur réalisateur, sa première étant pour Nomadland en 2020. Cette année-là, Nomadland avait remporté à la fois le prix du meilleur réalisateur et celui du meilleur film.

Le président de Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, a mené la campagne pour le film Avengers : Endgame sorti en 2019 après parcours de Black Panther aux Oscars, poussant pour l’oscar du meilleur film avec 13 autres catégories, mais n’est reparti qu’avec une nomination pour les meilleurs effets visuels. Spider-Man : Into the Spider-Verse a remporté le prix du meilleur film d’animation aux Oscars 2019.

Ces nombreuses récompenses et nominations ne font que donner l’espoir de décrocher un l’oscar pour un film Marvel, alors que Disney roule sur le box-office, le studio aux grandes oreilles souhaite aujourd’hui s’octroyer plus d’un succès. Bien qu’Eternals a connu de très nombreuses controverses, décrochant notamment le pire score pour un film Marvel MCU sur les agrégateurs de critiques, c’est ce film que Kevin Feige souhaite le plus mettre en avant bien qu’il présentera également Black Widow et Shang-Chi. Face au trio de film Marvel, et la prétention sans limite de Disney, Kevin Feige devra faire face à Dune, No Way Home (proposé par Sony Pictures), James Bond : No Time to Die.

Why Marvel’s Eternals Is Much Better the Second Time Around

This feature contains spoilers for Marvel’s Eternals.

Eternals is now streaming on Disney+, and many people who missed seeing it on the big screen are finally getting a chance to check out what they might have heard is a rare misstep from Marvel Studios in the comfort of their own home. Meanwhile, others are wondering if Eternals is worth revisiting at all after struggling with it the first time.

I fall into a different category. I found Eternals pretty enjoyable and a welcome departure from your standard MCU installment, but was looking forward to seeing it again because I had a feeling that some of the film’s problems might be reduced after I’d had time to sit with its secrets, and I did indeed find that to be the case. Mostly.

There are things that still feel lackluster about Eternals and that probably won’t age as well as the contemplative beings at the center of this story, but Eternals still plays a lot better when you’ve received some key answers about the plot that were initially kept guarded. Many of the choices made both by director Chloé Zhao, her writing team of Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo, and those made by the characters themselves, are much easier to digest the second time around.

Running On Empty

The revelation that the Eternals are synthetic beings designed for a singular purpose is a key factor in this. They are just a means to an end; a quick revision of the Celestial plan to rid planets of apex predators using the savage Deviants. Trotted out by the powerful Celestial Arishem to eliminate the Deviants so that intelligent life can prosper and fuel the planet with enough energy to birth a new Celestial.

For centuries-old beings who have come to regard themselves as godlike proto-superheroes, that sudden info dump has gotta sting, but none of us find out this information until an hour into the movie, and we still feel unsure about Arishem’s motivations in revealing it.

The Eternals are like humanoid Roombas who only finally become aware of their purpose as their Earthbound expiration date approaches. They have been given facets of what we might call the human soul, and those facets slowly expand as they receive more input, but essentially the Eternals have just one job to complete for their Celestial boss Arishem: vacuuming up Deviants.

After cleaning up what they think is the last of the Deviants in 1521, the synthetic Eternals have nothing left to do but bumble about aimlessly, bumping into existential walls until they get further orders from Arishem via their retired leader Ajak (Salma Hayek). Our core ten characters set about trying to find their place in a Deviant-free world where they’ve been ordered not to intervene in humanity’s endless nonsense.

They adopt the human traits they find most endearing or valuable over time. Sersi (Gemma Chan) embraces her preoccupation with beauty and history, Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani) discovers small pleasures in feeding his ego, the charming Druig (Barry Keoghan) finds methods of control much more soothing, and weapons and technology inventor Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) has decided to concentrate on family matters.

The essence of these synthetic beings is also explored in Eternals elsewhere, as “wear and tear” is intrinsic to Thena’s character. Suffering from a psychological condition called Mahd Wy’ry, which is basically another way of saying her memory card is corrupted, Thena (Angelina Jolie) needs to be wiped and reformatted. But her mind still contains memories from a few of the other planets that the Eternals have inhabited in addition to memories of her time on Earth. Those have all become far too precious for Thena to simply discard, but to continue to access them she must accept that a factory reset is off the table.

Ostensibly, the extended time we spend with these strange beings until they truly question whether they can break their programming and thus avoid a new Celestial hitting execute lets us experience the boredom of immortality, those questions of purpose that we are all burdened with, and the humdrum existence of waiting for a cycle to end when you don’t know if there even is an end. But because neither we nor the Eternals know how weird and messed up their whole deal is until so late in the game, their journey to personal and group agency doesn’t really feel that engaging until we revisit the story a second time.

Strange Choices

Some of the unnatural dialogue and decision-making in Eternals is also easier to parse when you know that these are synthetic beings we’re dealing with. When Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman questions why Sersi and the Eternals didn’t intervene in Thanos’ Snap, she replies that they were ordered not to. As a human, Dane is puzzled, but the Eternals’ non-action more fully checks out when you understand what they were built and programmed for.

The casting of Bodyguard star Richard Madden as Ikaris may have seemed like an odd choice given his stoic performances in other projects, but for a superman who isn’t a man at all, he’s pretty perfect. Ikaris is the movie’s villain in as much as there is a “villain” in the circle of life, and we understand how much he has sacrificed to commit to it.

Ikaris’ decision to blow off his long romance with Sersi, kill Ajak, and play a key role in seeing the Eternals’ mission through to the bitter end also makes sense when you understand he’s just more aligned with his task than the others, who have begun to imagine themselves as champions of humanity. When he fails to complete his assignment, Ikaris chooses to self-destruct and accept oblivion rather than carry on being Arishem’s least appreciated Deviant-cleaning machine. Even his joke about leading the Avengers becomes wildly wry on second viewing: it’s funny because he’s probably the last one you could count on to defend the Earth from any new threats.

Kingo’s decision to peace out of the Eternals’ final confrontation also remains compelling. We warm to him the most because he is cavalier and sarcastic, so it really hits home when he decides that he no longer wants any part in either Arishem’s plan or the Eternals’ rebellion. A second viewing of Eternals, knowing that Kingo is going to be the one to walk away, inspires some pretty interesting reflection on what it means to be an entertainer who isn’t programmed to be entertained.

It’s a Vampire Movie

And not just because the voice of our new Blade pops up in the post-credits scene! Though the sound of Mahershala Ali’s dulcet tones following the conclusion of Eternals makes a lot of sense in the context of Dane Whitman’s Black Knight future, and though the filmmakers have been honest about how many different characters they considered dropping in there, a quasi-cameo from Marvel’s new Daywalker feels like kismet in the context of the film’s themes.

Despite the Eternals being positioned as “Gods amongst men,” our own pop culture point of reference for immortal creatures who watch from the shadows throughout history with little purpose other than continue existing tends to be vampires, and Eternals touches on some of the same themes as other popular bloodsucker stories like Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles and Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark, along with more navel-gazing fare like Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive. How do you go about living forever, when forever can be so dull, heartbreaking, and frustrating? This has been exhaustively covered by vampire fiction.

A few of our Eternals are unsure how to best embrace immortality, and they fall into their own appropriate routines during their runtime. Some simply make the best of it, drifting until their time runs out; others try to achieve more. Even as Ikaris disconnects from humanity, Kingo uses his time to find fame in the vein of Rice’s Lestat de Lioncourt. Meanwhile, Druig becomes an exile overseeing a secret society he can manipulate.

Perhaps the most “on the nose” character of the bunch is Sprite (Lia McHugh), who has the physical appearance of a 12-year-old child but who is an old soul stuck in that physical form for what she assumes will be eternity, yearning to finally grow up much like the young Claudia in Interview with the Vampire.

Though our Eternals aren’t feeding off humanity in a literal way (Druig and Kingo’s bullshit is debatable) they have been coded as feeding off humanity culturally, and their memory banks are now chock-full of historic truths. They are in a unique position to be the kind of knowledge-bearers who were actually witness to some of our greatest triumphs and could help us learn from our worst mistakes, but we will never be their equals. Perhaps that’s for the best, as there is still an essential part of a relatable personality missing from their equation.

Let Forever Be

Given Eternals’ mixed reviews and relatively muted (well, by MCU standards) box office, we may never see a traditional sequel on the Marvel Studios slate. There are certainly plenty of ways to explore their journey in the future, but whether there will be an appetite for it remains to be seen.

It’s ironic that after ten major character introductions, an eleventh who only had a sliver of screen time stands the best chance of going on to appear in more MCU projects: Dane Whitman, who could potentially show up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Moon Knight, Werewolf By Night or Bassam Tariq’s forthcoming Blade reboot.

Despite it looking unlikely, the Eternals are worthy of far more exploration. After Vision entered the MCU in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there seemed to be plenty of room to dive into what it means to be a benign synthetic being in the Marvel universe, and though this has been lightly probed thus far – specifically via Vision’s part in the the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War and his interactions with White Vision in WandaVision – A.I., robots, and synthezoids have always been a big part of Marvel Comics history and should absolutely form part of this expanding universe just as they have in Star Trek.

The decision to create the Eternals as synthetic beings rebelling against Celestials could even work in favor of future storytelling options since they have such a unique way of viewing the galaxy’s flaws, and could also open up broad, cosmic avenues for introducing major villains like Galactus.

How Tyres and Traction Affect Braking Distance

Relying on brakes alone in an emergency is not enough. There are many factors that come into play to ensure safe braking and maintain control of the car in an emergency, explains Chris Lett, veteran tyre expert and owner of Branigans Budget Tyres. The reaction time of the driver, the speed of the vehicle, the traction of the wheels on the road, the type of braking system being used as well as the conditions of parts like shocks and tyres, all impact on the ability to keep control when having to brake suddenly, and the safety of doing so.

“Becoming familiar with the vehicle, and its braking distance by calculating stopping distances, will provide the driver with knowledge and experience that’s crucial when it comes to quick and safe reactions on the road,” says Lett. “This is a key factor to safe braking.”

He said it was also important to be aware of the importance of tyres when it comes to braking: “The brakes do not stop the car. They stop the wheels from turning, but it is the tyres’ grip on the road and the traction healthy tyres provide that brings the car to a halt.”

Reaction, Braking Time and Speed affect Stopping Time

The average person’s reaction time is estimated at 1.5/2 seconds, and that of older and less experienced drivers averages at 2.5 seconds. This difference already affects the time it takes to stop., at 50km/hour it will be 21m and that distance will lengthen considerably the higher the speed at which the car is travelling.

“Added to reaction time is braking time,” explains Lett. “From the point of pushing the brake pedal, the braking distance is averaged at 4m for 10km/h. To work out what the stopping distance would be, take a medium sized car that is travelling at a speed of 60km/h on a dry road and it will have a reaction distance of 25m. Add 20m for the braking distance and the total stopping distance is 45m. At 100km/h the reaction distance is 42m, braking distance 56m and stopping distance is 98m.

On a wet road at 60km/h the reaction distance remains 25m, but the braking distance increases to 29m and the total stopping distance becomes 54m. At 100km/h, the reaction distance remains 42m, the braking distance increases to 80mm and the total stopping distance is 122m. This makes it extremely important to follow the rule of safe travelling distances between vehicles.”

Factors influencing braking distance

“Worn, under or over inflated tyres cause a loss of grip on the road and regardless of the quality of brakes, could cause the driver to lose control, and the vehicle to slide,” cautions Lett. “This makes it extremely important to constantly maintain the tyres, and replace them when necessary.”

Other factors are worn braking, suspension systems, and worn shock absorbers and springs which could change the vehicle’s centre of gravity and tilt the weight of the vehicle onto the front wheels, so causing lack of control of the vehicle when braking sharply. Distractions and road conditions also play a role in affecting the driver’s ability to respond quickly and safely.”

First Take: Eternals - are Marvel moving away from ‘fully family-friendly’ movies?

SYNOPSIS: The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations.

The MCU has always had some big hits, a few middle of the ground films, and the occasional dud- and while Phase 4 has got off to a very strong start, this unfortunately feels like Marvel is having a minor identity crisis as we go through the early stages of plotbuilding for the next 23 or so films.

This isn’t a knock on Chloe Zhao, who takes her unique talent for natural cinema and puts her own mark on the Marvel formula; this sadly means that the 2 hour 36 minute runtime is a bit excessive, and it’s obvious where the rewrites were added, as Zhao’s script (crafted along with Patrick Burleigh and the combination of Ryan and Kaz Firpo) showcases a lot of promise in terms of what it tries to do, but ultimately gets bogged down with a lot of unnecessary exposition, and at times, edgier content compared to what we’ve seen in prior Marvel Studios films - this is a 12a for very good reason, so leave the kids at home for this one. It is shot brilliantly by Ben Davis, taking the natural style that Zhao has used on her previous work and applying it to a blockbuster, and as ever Ramin Djwadi provides a decent score, but the starpower is what holds the film together.

With the cast, it is lead admirably by Gemma Chan and Richard Madden, two very likable talents, one of whom is currently running the risk of being typecast- to say more would be a spoiler unfortunately, and supporting them is Kumail Nanjiani, Angelina Jolie, Barry Keoghan, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, along with Kit Harington, Lia McHugh, and one more name who I can only reveal when the film goes on Disney+, but they all obviously had a lot of fun making this film. While it hasn’t been the most strongly regarded MCU film, it’s obvious to see where Phase 4 is heading, and much in the same way the Harry Potter films did with Goblet of Fire onwards, we’re going in a much darker direction for the next era. Whether Spider-Man can cement this new storyline later on in the year though remains to be seen.

THE VERDICT

Eternals is an entertaining MCU film. But it has a bit of an identity crisis at its core, which does impact on the overall quality- sure, the two post-credits scenes have some big ramifications for Phase 4, but it just doesn’t hit the highs other films have reached.

Eternals is a 2021 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Chloé Zhao, who wrote the screenplay with Patrick Burleigh, Ryan Firpo, and Kaz Firpo. Principal photography took place from July 2019 to February 2020, at Pinewood Studios as well as on location in London and Oxford, England, and in the Canary Islands.

Eternals premiered in Los Angeles on October 18, 2021, and was released theatrically in the United States on November 5 in RealD 3D, Monoscopic 2D and 4DX, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The film has grossed $281.4 million worldwide. It received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its themes and visuals, but criticized its exposition, pacing, run-time, and lack of character development.
