Royal Flycatcher: Majestic Birds with Beautiful Crowns
The royal flycatcher is the name used for four species of birds belonging to the family of Tityridae. The word ‘Royal’ refers to the fascinating feather display on the crown of the bird’s head, a beautiful cluster of red, yellow, white, blue, or black colors. The royal flycatcher birds use this brilliant colorful plumage to display courtship rituals, after mating, while grooming or fighting with other males over territory.

Schiffornis cracrafti Lima et al., 2023 (new species)
Tumblr media
(Preserved skins of male individuals of Schiffornis cracrafti, from Lima et al., 2023)
Meaning of name: cracrafti = for Joel Cracraft [American ornithologist]
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: The southwestern part of the Amazon rainforest, including western Brazil and eastern Bolivia
How much is known: Over 130 specimens are held in museum collections.
Notes: Schiffornis is a genus of birds from the American tropics, belonging to the obscure group Tityridae. The most commonly used English name for members of this genus is also "schiffornis", being taken directly from their scientific name. Schiffornises are largely brown or olive-brown in color and make whistling vocalizations. They are known to eat both insects and fruits and to build bulky, cup-shaped nests a short distance above ground, but their ecology is otherwise poorly understood.
At present, most taxonomic authorities recognize seven species of schiffornises, but the authors of a new study on the anatomy, vocalizations, and genetics of these birds recommend splitting them into 13 different species. Out of these 13, one had not been previously given a scientific name, so the authors describe it as the new species S. cracrafti.
S. cracrafti was previously considered the same species as the brown-winged schiffornis (S. turdina). It is closely related to S. turdina proper (which the authors restrict to populations in the Atlantic Forest of eastern Brazil) and S. wallacii (found primarily in the eastern Amazon, but overlaps slightly with the range of S. cracrafti to the west). Although S. cracrafti cannot be reliably distinguished from S. turdina and S. wallacii based on external appearance, it is genetically distinctive and can be identified by its song.

April 15, 2021 - Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher (Terenotriccus erythrurus)
Found from southeastern Mexico south through Central America to parts of northern and central South America, these small birds live in forests and swamps. Foraging in the middle and upper levels of the forest, they hunt insects from a perch, capturing them in short flights, or sometimes picking them from leaves. Females build hanging pouch-like nests from plant fibers, leaves, and other materials and incubate the eggs alone.
