Saying Goodbye...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (29th April - 3rd May 2019)
It was the week of Lily’s funeral and emotions were running high. At the Teahouse, Peri and Yasmine were busy choosing photos from Peri’s laptop to print out and place on Lily’s coffin, however, Peri was left devastated when Ste took the laptop to post another racist meme, and ended up deleting the pictures. The pair had a blazing row over the situation, just as Leela returned to the village. At the Nightingale’s, following Donna-Marie’s ‘confession’, Romeo was released from prison, but rather than being met by James at the prison gates, he was met by Prince. Prince raged at Romeo for running off with Lily, and made it clear that he blamed him for his wife’s death. Realising that Prince had suffered enough, Romeo told him that Lily had been planning on coming back to him before she died. The two lads came to an understanding and agreed to support each other at the funeral. However, back in the village, Diane was in a right state as she attempted to finalise the arrangements for Lily’s funeral. In a bid to help, Tony, knowing that Diane was worried about things kicking off between Prince and Romeo, asked Romeo not to attend the service, leaving him devastated.
Tumblr media
As the day of the funeral arrived, Marnie and James were concerned when Romeo refused to attend the service, and Prince was also upset when he realised that Romeo wasn’t planning on going. As it turned out, Romeo did make it to the church and stood side by side with Prince as they told the congregation how much Lily had meant to them. However, at the wake, Prince accused Romeo of muscling in on his moment to say goodbye to Lily and stormed off. Despite warnings from his family, Prince went to see Liam, who told him that revenge was the best way to get over losing a loved one. Keen to find something new to focus on, Prince begged Liam to allow him to work for him. Yay! Another character dragged into gangster nonsense!
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, there was tension between Darren and Nancy as she struggled to adjust to Charlie and Oscar’s involvement with Darren’s new family. The boys were thrilled when Darren presented them with a new tablet, suggesting they take it to the hospital to take some photos of DJ, but Nancy reacted by confiscating it, telling Darren that she was trying to reduce their screen time. Nancy’s annoyance over the situation once back at home meant that she failed to notice Kyle acting shiftily, and after receiving a phone call from his ex, Colin, he headed off to meet him with a bag of goodies he’d pinched from the Osborne’s, including Charlie and Oscar’s tablet. Colin told Kyle that he’d ruined his life and if he didn’t pay up, he’d ‘tell the others’ where he was. The conversation was witnessed from afar by Darren, and he jumped to the conclusion that Kyle must be having an affair. The following morning, Nancy and Charlie awoke to find several items missing and Nancy quickly called the police, assuming they’d been burgled. Later, Darren told Nancy what he’d seen the previous night, but Nancy was quick to rubbish his claims. However, it seems she may have been premature when she later overheard Kyle on the phone to someone, saying that Nancy couldn’t find out what he’d been up to...
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, love was in the air for Cleo and Mitchell as Walter finally gave the pair his blessing. Having realised that Cleo had been going through a tough time with her mental health, Walter invited her round to dinner, much to Mitchell’s delight. Cleo proved to be a massive hit with Walter when he discovered she loved a quiz show just as much as he did! With the date having gone well, Mitchell and Cleo made plans to see each other again, but with Mitchell’s shift patterns at the hospital, finding time proved difficult. It was then that Cleo announced the perfect way they could spend more time together; she could train as a nurse.  Because of course, she’s bound to get a job at the same hospital as Mitchell and they’ll definitely be on shift together in the same departments. And we definitely know that Doctors and nurses get loads of breaks to sneak off for a quick bunk up in the store cupboard. Mitchell was delighted with the idea of having a ‘sexy nurse’ for a girlfriend but Cleo took his words a little too literally and later burst in wearing a kinky nurses outfit whilst Mitchell was examining a patient! Luckily, he didn’t seem to mind too much!
Tumblr media
In other news this week, Maxine was annoyed as Damon seemed to be spending more time with Brody at the Loveboat than with her. Not wanting to spend her ‘last days’ alone, Maxine told Damon that she wanted to see more of him. He agreed, but failed to share the news with Brody, who had just invited a blogger to come and check out the boat, meaning the pair would need to spend more time at work. Juliet struggled to come to terms with Donna-Marie’s imprisonment but was soon cheered up when Marnie gave her a lesson in etiquette. Finally, Romeo enjoyed a nice night out with step-dad, Harry.
Tumblr media
5 Things We Learned This Week:
1. It’s all about the memories. Sylver was busy preparing a memory tree for Bobby to take to school this week. But what sort of things might the youngster want to put on it? That time Mercedes faked a kidnapping of him? What about when Grandad Carl became a raging alcoholic? Or when new Daddy, Russ, got murdered on his wedding day? So many happy memories to choose from!
2. Ste and a laptop is an absolute disaster. Not only will he delete your precious photos, but he’ll post racist memes all over the internet. Keep him away!
3. Don’t buy loose fruit in Price Slice. It’s been balanced on Marnie’s head.
4. The Deveraux’s are massive quiz show fans. Well, The Family Chase is a thing now. Get them on it and let’s have a crossover! Martine can show off her extensive knowledge of 90s girl bands, too!
5. Regression, regression, regression.  Liam had started to become more tolerable over the last few weeks, having turned to God and started to spend more time with baby Iona. So who’s bright idea was it to have him return to the dark side this week?
Characters Featured:
Anthony, Brody, Charlie, Cleo, Damon, Darren, Dee Dee, Diane, Goldie, Grace, Harry, James, Jesse, Jonny, Juliet, Kyle, Laurie, Leela, Liam, Mandy, Marnie, Martine, Maxine, Mercedes, Mitchell, Nana McQueen, Nancy, Oscar, Peri, Prince, Romeo, Rose, Scott, Sinead, Ste, Sylver, Tony, Walter and Yasmine.
Past Characters Mentioned:
Glenn Donovan, Lily Drinkwell, Eva Falco, Tegan Lomax, Tabby Maxwell-Brown, Celine McQueen, Hunter McQueen, Alfie Nightingale, Ellie Nightingale, Mac Nightingale, Nathan Nightingale, Donna-Marie Quinn, Shane Sweeney.

Hunter's Game
Olidia stared at the folder looking at the address. This was it. Turning off her car she rubbed her face. Was this really a good idea? After the demon fiasco with Fate? Olidia flinched. That....hunt hadn't gone so well. Fate had ended up getting stabbed in the hand. It didn't help that it had been Olidia's first hunt. The two had ended up in a fight and while she forgave Fate her words had left an impression.
"You're just Balthazar's girlfriend! Do you know how many of those he goes through a year??"
Olidia turned off the car.
"You're just a clingy, insecure woman!"
Grabbing her lighter, salt rounds and lighter fluid she got out.
"I'd rather bleed to death and have my blood refill itself than have you anywhere near me Olidia!"
No more. She wouldn't be useless anymore. Wouldn't be just another woman who was defenseless. She could be strong. She could protect others. She was going to PROVE that she wasn't a complete waste of space. It was just a simple salt and burn. It should be easy. Making sure her gun was loaded, (thank God for Bobby for teaching her how to shoot), she went inside the house. It was quiet, the air deathly still. Keeping her gun aimed she kept herself alert. That's when she saw it, the familiar wisps of white. A spirit's aura. As she stepped through the door it slammed shut. Olidia jumped, a bit startled before she saw it. The ghost. It was a woman, her eyes blank. The two had a stare down before the spirit flung herself at Olidia. Olidia threw up her arms not realizing the spirit had a blade. Olidia hissed in pain as the blade went into her forearm, but she used her other hand to shoot. The ghost disappeared and Olidia forced herself to her feet. She followed the wisps, her sight showing her where the object keeping the spirit here was. A child's bedroom was her destination. Sitting on the child's old bed was a doll. Olidia had grabbed it when the spirit reappeared throwing Olidia against the wall, straight into a mirror. Glass shattered cutting her back and arms. Her back was on fire. Olidia slid to the ground and quickly cocked her gun despite the pain and blood shooting the ghost. No more, she wouldn't be a burden anymore. Getting up she went to bolt out of the house before she was shoved down the stairs. Clutching the doll she rolled, embedding the pieces of glass in her arms a bit deeper. Finally getting to the bottom of the stairs she went to get up and managed to make it past the fireplace before the spirit grabbed her by the throat and began to check her. Olidia gasped, unable to break free. She felt tears prick her eyes. She was going to die. Why was she doing this? Then she remembered.
Samael.
Gabriel.
Balthazar.
Fate.
Rebel.
Voluptas.
Tegan.
Sam.
And so many others who had to put up with her weaknesses. Who were burdened with her fragility. No more. She wouldn't be a useless fuck up anymore!!! Reaching around blindly she finally got her hands on a iron fire poker and swung. The ghost disappeared and Olidia, wheezing rolled towards the fire place and quickly grabbed the lighter and lighter fluid. Drenching the doll she threw it into the fireplace and set it on fire. The spirit screamed going up in flames. Olidia nearly went limp in front of the fireplace. She'd done it. Her first successful case. Forcing herself up, she limped towards the front door. She was going to have a hell of a time picking the glass out of her arms and have major bruising around her neck, but she'd done it. She'd finally found a way to be useful.
*AND DONE!!! MUSES BELONG TO!!!! @samael-has-arrived @gabe-is-no-longer-back-baby @randy-angel-balthazar @tricksters-daughter @rebel-stan @volvptcs @balthazars-child @muted-winchester!!! MUSES MENTIONED!!! @bobby-the-sass-master!!!!! PLEASE CHECK THEM OUT!!!! PERMANENT TAG!!!! @samael-has-arrived

Science in film: from the meaning of time to the marvels of fungi
by Peter Ellerton
Tumblr media
A scene from the short film KCLOC. Screenshot/Vimeo
One of the wonderful things about science is that it makes us think about what we value, or what is meaningful to us. It’s not just an objective, dispassionate inquiry into the material world, it’s also a large part of the story about what it means to be human.
That dimension is often missing in science education, but it is brought home beautifully within the collection of films that represent the winners of the 2018 SCINEMA International Science Film Festival, to be screened at various capital cities across Australia this month.
I managed to catch up with the festival in Brisbane this week, so I’ll mention some films that do this exceptionally well.
The meaning of time
In a playful way, Ninaad Kulkarni gorgeously animates a variety of interviews with people who are asked what time means to them.
vimeo
KCLOC official trailer.
The film KCLOC brings out an amazing thing about time — it’s a physical quantity, sure, but it just doesn’t seem as interesting to ask people what they think about mass or distance. It’s a fascinating point that suggests something profound about the human experience with and in time.
More dramatically, in Timelapse writer and director Aleix Castro explores the idea of an implanted chip that blocks mundane work tasks from our consciousness, promising to free us from the daily grind.
vimeo
Timelapse official trailer.
Workers move around zombie-like until their work period (perhaps a month) ends. They then return to awareness and enjoy an extended leisure time. A month’s work seemingly passing in a second, and then a week off - and they are well paid for it!
It sounds like a win-win for employers and workers, but what about those periods during which we are working but our loved ones are not? And would we be happy losing large chunks of our lives from memory, even if those memories are boring? How would we learn perseverance, or recognise the exciting times if we have no contrasting experiences?
Maybe we’d want to extend those down times to household chores as well. How much of our lives would we end up living?
One of the most powerful impressions on me was made by iRony, Radheyda Jegatheva‘s adaptation of his poem Seven Billion.
youtube
iRony official trailer.
Hand-animated (which adds to the film’s intensity) and extraordinarily creative, iRony explores our relationship with the technology that is meant to connect us, but can rob us of joy and purpose. It’s another call to focus on how we spend our time.
If you have a child or friend who seems to have lost themself in social media, iRony would be a superbly targeted intervention.
Why fungi matters
Among the shorter films, the significantly longer The Kingdom – How Fungi Made Our World sounds, to the uninitiated like me, a good opportunity to order another wine.
youtube
The Kingdom: How Fungi Made Our World trailer.
I just had no idea. Is there really fungus on everything we touch? Do we really breathe in fungi with every breath? (Yes, in case you were wondering.) And is the “g” hard or soft?
Fungi, it turns out, are the unifying evolutionary thread for all complex life on land. No fungi, no us.
Not only do they enable the proliferation of vascular plants over the world, creeping between and within their cells to provide essential nutrients, but they also connect them through giant networks of filaments (hyphae) to form — wait for it — the Wood Wide Web.
Unlike plants and cold-blooded animals, mammals seem to be generally fungus-free zones, as fungi do not like the higher core temperatures of our bodies. That exclusion gave mammals the advantage over other animals immediately after the Cretaceous–Tertiary mass extinction about 66 million years ago, resulting ultimately in the appearance of humans millions of years later.
But it’s not that we don’t get on with fungi at all. Not only did they gift us penicillin (and fungi might also be a solution to new resistant strains of bacteria - superbugs), but consider the yeast that gives us bread… and beer.
For the religiously inclined, it would not seem untoward to imagine that God at some stage said “Let there be fungi”, and all was good.
Grassroots, written and produced by Tegan Nock and directed by Frank Oly, is an outstanding example of how citizens can put scientific findings to use. They don’t always have to wait for a technology to be processed, packaged and delivered to their door by others.
vimeo
Grassroots trailer.
Farmer Guy Webb became convinced of the ability of fungi (is there nothing they can’t do?) to sequester carbon in very significant amounts when added to crops, potentially reducing the impact of global warming.
Rather than wishing “they” would do something about it, one of the agriculturalists straightforwardly says, “we are the they”. It’s an exciting story of one person’s belief - growing into a group’s belief - that individual action based on existing science can have huge consequences.
Production values
There was enormous aesthetic value evident in the preview of Planet Earth II – Grasslands, produced and directed by Chadden Hunter. A beautifully filmed and written piece that is breathtaking in how it uses the newest camera technology to make the audience feel they are moving along with the organisms rather than seeing them from afar.
youtube
Widow birds bounce for attention, from episode Planet Earth II: Grasslands.
Also visually stunning was the modelling shown in a Spanish production called Virtual Humans.
youtube
Virtual Humans.
A supercomputer creates a virtual copy of a body that could allow medical treatments and physical therapies to be tailored to an individual’s exact requirements. All done in the safe confines of cyberspace.
It was also thought-provoking to realise how far away we are from being able to model a mind.
The fun of it all
The mindbogglingly mathematical Lily Serna takes us through a Catalyst episode, produced and directed by David Symonds and Nicholas Searle, about using mathematics in decision-making.
Serna’s lack of pretension around her abilities and her joy in sharing the benefits of it is admirable, and she explains some very sophisticated mathematics with simplicity and clarity.
I wonder if we all have the confidence in mathematics to live by the decision-making algorithm she provides. It’s well worth a try, I reckon.
Tumblr media
The festival is a great expression of why science matters, not just in the utility it provides but in the values and meaning it highlights. Facts and values don’t just make good entertainment, together they make good science.

that scene a few weeks ago where luke wore frankie’s fur coat + i would die for luke and mandy
joel/sienna is happening and there’s nothing we can do to stop it
I know that checking for straight men is playing yourself but damon and brody are so good

Child of Peace 22 - Grateful
Manorian adventures post EoS
chapter list on tumblr
full work on ao3
The Matron startled and turned towards Manon, wide-eyed and uncomprehending. At the sight of Dorian prone and unconscious, the Matron prowling above him, something snapped in Manon.
“Get the fuck away from him.”
Still staring and bewildered, the Matron didn’t move. Under the spell of some feral instinct, Manon loosed a dagger, sending it straight for her chest.
Her movement, slight as it was, broke the haze of confusion and the Matron jumped aside at the last second, causing the blade to miss its mark. She landed hard but was on her feet quickly, the dagger embedded just below her collarbone.
Manon swore under her breath at the near hit. Her magic was depleted from getting here. Though it was nowhere close to being gone, she needed some time before she could try to yield again.
The witch’s face was a grotesque mixture of pain, disgust, and confusion. “How? How are you here?”
“It seems I’m quite powerful,” Manon said, slowly circling to get the Matron away from Dorian and herself closer. “I’ve learned a few things since you saw me last.”
The Matron’s breath was coming in short gasps and with a wince, she touched a finger to the hilt of the dagger. Manon was not fooled. Her grandmother was in pain, yes. But the wound was not bad enough to warrant this display.
“You kept much to yourself. You and the other matrons.” She was almost between them. “Not just the magic. And the war.”
A nasty smile spread across the Matron’s face. “Don’t tell me he is your mate. That feeble human?” She barked a laugh. “So that’s how you came to be here. Did you feel what I did to him? Did you feel it when I placed the collar around his neck? I find I prefer him with it than without.”
Manon kept her face neutral but inside she raged. Dorian’s neck was obscured from view and she hadn’t noticed anything there. She forced herself not to turn around to check. Likely, this was all her grandmother’s usual bullshit. And Manon refused to play along.
With gritted iron teeth, the Matron grabbed the dagger and pulled it free of her body. Blue blood began to seep from the wound as she straightened to her full height. Manon briefly wondered if she was able to heal herself, then wished she had the ability to fully sense the Matron’s magic.
“After Rhiannon’s dying curse kept us from the Wastes, from Mala’s Temple and the key, I thought it a good idea to exact better control over the Ironteeth.” She flicked her hand in disdain. “The Bluebloods were too distracted with their pain tithes and praying to be of much concern. The Yellowlegs were well-kept under Baba’s thumb. And I had no problems with the Blackbeaks. Until your mother’s generation.”
Manon barely listened to the words as she tried to sense Abraxos. Although he felt close by, she couldn’t get a good enough read on him to determine if he was injured. She sent questions to Dorian, but he was in and out of consciousness and unable to reply.
“Did you ever wonder why so many of your Thirteen grew up without their mothers?” She began to count off on her fingers. “Farra. Lasair. Enora. Tegan. Carwen. Adelle.”
Running through the names in her head, Manon matched them to her sentinels. Faline and Fallon’s mother. Vesta. Lin. Imogen. Edda. Sorrel. They’d all died in childbirth. Or so they’d been told. Gods, they’d been so young when the Thirteen formed. Young and trusting. Malleable. Willing to do all that was asked of them.
“The others of their age group must not have found their mates. Or they were smart enough to keep quiet about it. Unfortunately for her, Lothian did not fall into either of those categories. And as for your second… I only let Asterin live because she was such a useful tool for keeping you in line.”
Those names were like a slap to Manon’s face, forcing her back to the present. She knew her parents had been mates. But Asterin and her hunter?
The Matron’s black eyes narrowed on her. “Why I thought you’d turn out any differently. I almost killed you when you were born. But I refrained. Your eyes…” The Matron trailed off, as if thinking of a fond memory instead of the near infanticide she just described.
Her golden eyes, the irises absent of any other color. The purity was such a rare and idolized feature among Ironteeth that the Matron had often boasted about Manon’s eyes. As if she’d had anything to do with it.
“I’d hoped they were a sign. I’d hoped that with my instruction perhaps you could overcome your inferior breeding.” Her voice grew heavy with disgust. “Hope is for fools.”
Manon’s face was hard, expressionless. She had little doubt that the Matron had considered killing her in the first few minutes of her life. A fleeting sense of gratitude at having been spared washed over her. Only to be replaced by nausea. The thought that she owed this monster anything, let alone gratitude…
She glanced back at Dorian and her shame eased. She was grateful. Grateful for her parents, who had somehow come together despite so many barriers. Grateful for her Thirteen. Abraxos. Aven, Annabee. And Dorian.
But Manon wasn’t sure if she could fully separate those feelings from this witch. She couldn’t tease apart the good from the bad. Neither could she reconcile those warring sides into something whole and unstained. Her grandmother. Her abuser. The witch who had raised her. The witch who had fed her lies. The witch who had taught her to fight and survive. The witch who had taught her to hate and kill.
She shook her head, trying to clear it, and when she looked up, the Matron was smiling at her. What had been an evil sneer had become something sad. Sympathetic.
“You were always such a disappointment Manon. The taint of your Crochan blood… I thought you’d defied it when you helped me kill your father.”
Just as she was about to laugh in the Matron’s face, distorted images floated through her mind. Not quite real memories. Rather, hazy visions from a nightmare. A bearded man on his knees, arms bound. Blue blood dripping from his mouth as he called out her name. Called her mother’s name. The Matron slapping him so hard he fell over, new gashes in his face adding to the growing pool of blood on the floor.
“All of those years exterminating your own kind.” The Matron began walking slowly towards her. “All of those heads you brought back, trying to impress me.” She leaned forward and whispered, “You were just never good enough Manon. Always falling short. You think I didn’t know. Every second of hesitation before administering a punishment. Every order of mine you ignored. Every disgusting Crochan child you refused to kill.”
Manon flinched and took a step backward. She thought she was going to vomit. The visions of the male were becoming more clear. No longer vague notions left over from a dream. She had been there. She had witnessed his death. Her father’s death. Had she helped to kill him?
“First your father. Then your sister. Is that bitch Aven still alive? Or did you manage to kill her too?”
Muffled sounds slowly turned into voices, then words. A moment later and Dorian was making sense of what he was hearing. Manon. She was here. Somehow he was hearing her voice. Forcing his eyes to open, he tried to push himself up. Gods, everything hurt. How the hell was he even still breathing?
His head fell back to the ground. Luckily, he’d only raised it a couple of inches.
He had no idea how Manon was standing in front of him but he knew he had to get up. He didn’t fool himself into thinking he could be of much help to her. But he sure as hell wasn’t going to just lay here as a liability.
Just need a few more seconds, he thought, eyes closing.
Conscious and no longer being tortured by the Matron, Dorian could feel his magic at work. Healing him, strengthening him. His reserves were dangerously low, but they were there.
He sensed a shield surrounding the two of them and realized it was coming from Manon. As he gauged her power, felt its enormity and complexity, he couldn’t help but smile. She had unlocked her magic. And it was beyond impressive. And probably how she had traveled so far so quickly.
Remaining silent and still, Dorian dipped into his own well of magic, amazed by how quickly it was rejuvenating him. After the witches attacked Rifthold, it had taken days for him to fully recover from his wounds. But he was still very new to his magic then. Now, after Aven’s instruction… it was like everything had been amplified. His control and focus made all the difference.
“… you’d overcome that when you helped me kill your father.”
No. The single word rang through his mind giving him the motivation he needed. Dorian pushed himself onto his knees and scanned his surroundings. Manon stood between him and the Matron. No sign of Annabee and Abraxos.
“You were just never good enough Manon…”
NO, he thought again, sending it to Manon. But there was no reply from her, no reaction. The Matron knew just where to strike. Knew all of Manon’s triggers. He felt the instant she started to crumble. Saw some of the things she was remembering.
“First your father. Then your sister. Is that bitch Aven still alive? Or did you manage to kill her too?”
The hell with this, he thought.
Knowing it might drain what remained of his magic, Dorian stood quickly and sidestepped Manon. Water burst from his outstretched hands. Caught completely off guard, the Matron was forced back against a rock face. Within a second she was encased in a solid block of ice, the shock still visible on her face.
They didn’t have much time. The ice would hold her for a short while, but not long enough for them to escape on foot. And with Abraxos elsewhere, and probably injured, their options were few and far between. With his power so low, he needed her to stay together.
“Manon,” he whispered, taking her face in his hands.
She was dazed, as if not really there. He kept saying her name, staring into her dull eyes, praying to the gods he hated for her to come back to him.
“Please Witchling. Don’t believe her lies.”
For a moment, Manon sparked to life. Only to say, “But she isn’t lying. I was there. I watched him die. I did nothing to stop it.” Tears were filling her eyes, on the verge of spilling out. Her voice sounded so fragile, like she might break apart completely.
Dorian forced down a sob. He’d thought the torture he’d just been through was bad. That pain was nothing compared to this.
He knew from the images he’d seen in her thoughts that it wasn’t a lie. At least, not completely. The Matron was a master at incorporating just enough truth into her deceptions to make them believable. A young witchling was made to bear witness to a male’s torture and death. She would not have known the male was her father. Not until it served the Matron’s schemes.
“Listen to me,” he said, glancing quickly to check that the witch was still confined. “She is trying to disorient you. Control you. She’ll say anything to do that.” Her eyes seemed to gain some focus again.
“She is the only person to blame for his death. She carried it out. She kept the truth hidden until it could be used like a knife to your throat. And if you had known who he was then and tried to stop her, she would have killed you too. You were a child. You were powerless to stop her.”
Manon was blinking back tears. He could sense where her mind was drifting.
“You’re worried that you are like her? ” Dorian jabbed a finger towards the Matron. “She is nothing compared to you. Everything she has ever done has been out of hate and fear. Everything serving as a means to her evil end.”
“But you…” He couldn’t keep the emotion from his voice. “You saved Annabee. You saved Abraxos. And the Blueblood heir. Elide. Asterin.”
“And you,” she said, her voice a bit stronger. “Several times actually.” Her eyes grew sad as she gingerly touched the new red mark around his neck.
Dorian took hold of her hand and huffed a relieved laugh. “I wanted to make sure you were paying attention. And yes. You’ve saved me more times than you know.” Kissing her forehead, he continued, “You didn’t save me and all the others for some twisted endgame or to serve your own purposes. You did it because it was right. You did it out of love. Something she cannot comprehend. You are not a heartless killer Manon. And right now, you are the one in control.”
Manon tried to push all of her nightmares and memories and doubts back into a dark corner of her mind. Logically, she knew he was right about her father. She’d have been killed trying to protect him. Just as her Thirteen would have been killed if she had not put Rhiannon out of her misery.
Logic simply went by the wayside when it came to her relationship with the Matron. She was too raw, her feelings too visceral to be fully overcome by reason.
But Dorian’s last words kept repeating in her head. She had the control now. She was not a heartless killer. Even with decades of pulled strings and manipulation, she had never become her grandmother. And she never would. She controlled her life and her choices.
They both flinched as an ear-splitting CRACK echoed around them. Deadly shards of ice slammed into her shield. But before the ice and dust could settle, a ferocious blast of magic hit them. Manon threw her hands up to guard them.
The motion was instinctual, as it had been when she’d saved her clan from the Yellowlegs’ yielding. And just as it had done then, her unintentional burst of magic prevented them from being turned to dust.
The Matron’s magic broke apart Manon’s shield, sending both her and Dorian off balance. With his power and strength almost gone, he collapsed onto the ground.
When she turned back to her grandmother, Manon knew it was over.
The expenditure of energy had forced the Matron to her knees. Within a moment, she fell onto her side. Although the dagger wound was hidden beneath her clothing, the steady flow of blood was obvious. And that was something that could not be exaggerated or played up.
Manon’s first strike when she’d arrived must not have strayed as far as she’d thought. Nicking an artery or lung could prove just as fatal as a blade to the heart if given time. She closed the distance between them and stood over her grandmother.
The Matron was failing quickly. “Kill me Manon,” she hissed. Her laugh turned into a hacking cough, blue blood splattering her chest. “It will be the perfect addition to your long list of family kills.”
Manon didn’t move. She was keenly aware of the other daggers on her body. Wind Cleaver still strapped to her back. But she remained still.
“Is this mercy or cowardice?” the Matron demanded. “Even in this you are useless. A waste.”
As another coughing fit wracked the witch’s body, Manon thought about the question. Mercy or cowardice? Or something else?
“You want me to do it. Just so I can suffer from knowing I killed my grandmother,” Manon said with quiet calm. “I am better than that. Better than you. And you no longer control me.”
She wasn’t certain if she believed that completely. She didn’t think she’d ever be free of the dark voice that sometimes overtook her.  But she knew this death was not a mercy. Left alone, the Matron would drown in her own blood. And more importantly, she knew she was not a coward.
Maybe leaving the Matron to die wasn’t any different than striking her down with a sword. After all, the end result was the same. But Manon thought that taking that extra step might just push her over the edge. She did not want to make the killing blow against another member of her family.
As she watched the Matron struggle to breath, Manon realized that a part of her still loved her grandmother. And maybe that’s what it came down to in the end. She didn’t know why, or how it was even possible considering all the evil the Matron had done. It felt wrong and dirty. And traitorous to the Thirteen, her parents, and Aven. But… it was still the truth.
Manon felt heavy with sadness and exhaustion. They still needed to find Abraxos and Annabee and see to their likely injuries. Without another word, she turned her back on her grandmother, and walked away.
Before she reached Dorian, she heard movement behind her. Whirling around, Manon came face to face with the Matron. She was lunging, frozen in mid-air, the bloody dagger in her outstretched hand. Inches from Manon’s chest.
Grunting, she tried to move, tried to force the blade closer. Nothing happened aside from twitching arms and narrowed eyes. Her blood continued to run from the chest wound however, forming a puddle around her feet.
Manon looked over at Dorian. His magic held the Matron in place. But judging from his quivering muscles and the intensity of his eyes, he was struggling to maintain it.
“She’s too powerful Manon,” he groaned. “She must be stopped. Now.”
Even knowing it had to be done and she had to be quick, she didn’t move. In that split second of hesitation, Manon’s mind seemed to travel back in time through her bloodline. As it had earlier, right before she’d yielded in battle. And as before, she thought of Rhiannon. The powerful Crochan Queen whose face she shared. Whose blood she shared.
A newfound strength of purpose washed through her and she turned to face the Matron. “I will kill you. Because I choose to. Not because you want me to.”
The Matron’s eyes flickered with some emotion, the corner of her mouth edging upwards. As if she thought Manon was simply lying. As if she had finally won.
With utter calm and command, she said, “I will kill you, but I will not put you out of your misery. You will spend eternity rotting and alone in the Darkness.”
Her golden eyes flashed with power and Manon continued in an icy tone she didn’t quite recognize. “You will be haunted knowing that those you killed are now at peace. Tormented knowing those who survived will live long, happy lives, never giving you a second thought. And you will suffer forever knowing future generations will think only of failure when they hear your name.”
Spitting blood, the Matron screamed, “I should have snapped your neck before you took a breath.” Her eyes were red and wild, filled with insane rage and pure hate. “That mercy was the biggest mistake I ever made.”
As the words sank in, Manon was filled with a storm of emotions. Grief and regret. Shame and anger. But through all of them, a sliver of gratitude. Hope. And with them came a spark of understanding.
She found that she could feel grateful for this witch’s mercy, regardless of how misguided it had been. Because it had led her to her family and friends, her mate. Because they’d shown her a different world was possible. Because she could now envision a future full of hope and love and peace.
“Thank you grandmother. That mistake will be your only lesson that I take to heart.”
In the span of a heartbeat, Wind Cleaver was freed from its sheath and arcing through the air. As tears filled her eyes, Manon brought the sword down and sliced through the Matron’s neck.
Dorian released his magical hold. The body dropped first, the head tumbling down on top of it.
As a sob broke free from Manon, her knees buckled and she fell towards the ground. But before she landed, Dorian caught her and pulled her into his arms.
To be continued!

If I Could Turn Back Time...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (2nd-6th July 2018)
The year is 2002 and in Hollyoaks village Ellie Hunter shocks her family by waltzing back in after a two year radio silence, Mandy Richardson and Adam Morgan are involved in a horrific car crash and Mr C is making a tit of himself at the Jubilee celebrations. Meanwhile, in another part of the country, it’s James Nightingale’s 16th birthday and his Father, Mac, gifts him a night with a prostitute, hoping that the experience will ‘turn him straight’. The fling results in a pregnancy and Marnie pays the prostitute, Donna-Marie, to have an abortion. Or so she thinks...
Tumblr media
This week, Hollyoaks rewound the clock and gave viewers a glimpse into the past life of popular character, James. The first flashback took us to 2002 and James’ 16th birthday. After finding out that his son was gay, Mac organised for James to sleep with a prostitute, hoping that the experience would make him realise he was actually straight.  A pregnancy resulted, and Marnie soon ‘sorted’ the problem by paying for a termination. Which brings us nicely to the next flashback and with ‘Call Me Maybe’ playing on the radio and the London Olympics being on newspaper covers, it could only be 2012. Here, we met a now grown-up James preparing to start work at a law firm. However, the occasion wasn’t all happy as Mac soon demanded that James help him get £100,000, supposedly to save his company from going under. Desperate for his Father’s approval, James made the decision to embezzle money from his new work place and he soon met the perfect person to frame for the crime when he met kindly accountant, Kashif Maalik. However, unbeknownst to James, his Father’s business wasn’t in trouble and they actually needed the money to pay Donna-Marie, who hadn’t had a termination after all...
Tumblr media
Back in the present day, James’ son, Romeo, approached his house, but couldn’t bring himself to knock on the door and walked away. Inside, James was desperately trying to work out who was framing him for Kyle’s murder. Suddenly, James had a realisation, and after all this time, remembered the surname of the man he’d framed; Maalik. Putting two and two together, James came up with four, and realised that Sami was Kashif’s son, and must surely be behind his recent troubles. The following day, James headed to Sami’s office and after finding the evidence he needed, confronted his rival. Turning the tables on Sami, James ordered him to get the murder charge dropped, or he’d tell the police that the whole thing was a set-up. Later on that day, Marnie invited the family round for a meal but Sami’s goading of James soon got too much for him to bear, and he beat him up, accidentally knocking Ellie over in the process...
Tumblr media
It appeared that neither Sami or Ellie had been seriously hurt, but the following day, Ellie collapsed at The Dog after feeling lightheaded and was rushed to hospital. Sami felt guilty about the situation and made the rather hasty decision to leave the village, however, he soon changed his mind when he discovered that Ellie was pregnant. James was devastated when Ellie shared her news with him and begged her not to have Sami’s baby. In that moment, Ellie saw red and got straight on the phone to Roxy, telling her to add Sami’s assault to James’ murder charge...
Tumblr media
That wasn’t the only Nightingale trauma this week as Marnie was finally told what was wrong with Alfie; schizoaffective disorder. Realising that her son would be on medication for life, Marnie decided to seek a second opinion and called in Dr Spellman. Unfortunately for Marnie, she didn’t get the news she was hoping for when Alfie’s diagnosis was confirmed and Marnie was shocked to be told that she could actually impair his recovery by refusing to acknowledge his illness...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Adam’s ashes were ready to collect and Grace and Maxine made the decision to scatter them together. However, after yet another row, Glenn ended up throwing the ashes all over Grace, leaving Maxine furious. Glenn tried to get back in Maxine’s good books by blaming Grace for the incident and offering to scatter the remainder of the ashes with her. One thing lead to another, as it so often does after scattering some ashes, and Glenn and Maxine ended up sleeping together. Unusually for Hollyoaks, Grace found out relatively quickly and finally walked out on Glenn! Great scenes, until you remember she’s walking out of her own flat. A flat that Glenn has no claim to...
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Farrah was delighted to be offered a new job as a forensic psychologist, surely a result of the fantastic work she did with RyRy earlier in the year. There was, however, a downside, and the new job would require Farrah to work much longer hours. Not so great when Kim was still refusing to leave the house. Not wanting to share the news with Kim, Farrah confided in Misbah that she didn’t want to jeopardise Kim’s recovery by leaving her before she was ready. Worried that her daughter was going to turn down the offer, Misbah decided to tell Kim about the job. Wanting to show Farrah how proud she was of her, Kim decided to leave the house alone to go and get Farrah a present but was left upset when Farrah snapped at her, unaware that she’d just shared a snog with Grace. The following day, Kim was still struggling but forced herself to leave the house again. This time, she headed back to the basement, to seek comfort from Rick Astley.
Tumblr media
In other news this week, desperate for a break from Imran, Misbah begged Buster to take him to the training camp in Barcelona, leaving Yasmine feeling like her Brother was being reward for his violent behaviour. Cleo was panicking about her upcoming wedding to Joel and Myra attempted to take some of the load off by buying her a wedding dress. Cleo was delighted by the thought, but was left devastated to discover that the dress was too small. Finally, Tegan was discharged from hospital and Diane, Leela and Ste realised they’d have to tell her about Dee Dee’s illness...
Tumblr media
5 Things We Learnt This Week:
1. Hollyoaks village has it’s own education system, where children start school younger than in other parts of the country. Either that or Rose Lomax and the Hutchinson kids are child geniuses who have been moved up a year.
2. Family loyalty means nothing to Ellie. James supported her when Nick raped her and helped cover up what she did to Mac and she repays him by turning her back on him when he’s in trouble. Nice sister, there.
3. Kim’s taken up papier mache and has made a bowl, but she doesn’t know if it’s safe to eat out of. There’s Hollyoaks next big story. Several characters come down with a mystery illness after eating from Kim’s bowl. That’s got ‘Best Storyline’ at next year’s British Soap Awards written all over it.
4. The folley found a new use this week as Glenn and Maxine scattered Adam’s ashes there. Well, I suppose it’s been used for just about everything else!
5. Glenn is actually ill! There is a God!
Characters Featured:
Alfie, Anthony, Buster, Cleo, Courtney, Curtis, Dee Dee, Diane, Donna-Marie, DS Roxy Cassidy, Ellie, Farrah, Glenn, Grace, Holly, Imran, James, Joel, Kim, Leela, Marnie, Maxine, Misbah, Myra, Oliver, Romeo, Rose, Sami, Ste, Tegan, Tony and Yasmine.

CleoJ, The End of Dancy and Mandy the Master Criminal...
Rounding up a week in Hollyoaks (28th August-1st September 2017)
Ah, Darren Osborne. A bigger mug you will not find. After handing himself in to the police at the end of last week, Darren hoped that he would be released without charge. After all, he's helped the police out and a little bit of drug dealing’s not that bad, right? Well, he was wrong and he’s now facing a prison sentence. Nancy told Darren that she couldn’t stand by him and announced that she was leaving. Luckily for Darren, Charlie was on his side and the youngster told Nancy that he didn’t want to be apart from the only Dad he’d ever known. Not wanting to upset her nephew, Nancy decided to stay put but later told Darren that this didn’t mean they were back together. She would stay until the trial, but their marriage was over...
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Mandy turned criminal mastermind this week. Not only did she kidnap Ella from her foster parents, but she robbed a couple of sandwiches from Price Slice.  Arriving in the village, Mandy was keen to see Tom, believing he could help her out (yeah, her kid brother, what’s he going to do?) Mandy obviously hasn’t kept in touch with either Tom or Cindy during her 6 years away from the village as she arrived at the house now occupied by Cindy and Dirk, believing that Tom and the Osborne’s still lived there. If they had kept in touch, you’d think a couple of house moves and Jack buying back and then selling The Dog may have been mentioned. Anyway, Cindy was in a right old state thanks to Yasmine’s pranks and attacked Mandy with a broom when she let herself in. Mandy was knocked to the floor and landed on some broken glass, leaving her with a nasty gash (*snigger*).  Mandy filled Cindy in on her situation but as the pair went outside to get Ella, they discovered that she’d vanished...

The pair searched for Ella themselves before getting Dirk involved and he nearly dropped Mandy right in it when he phoned the police. Luckily for Mandy, Cindy was able to cover for her, with a little help from Misbah, who’d arrived to see to Mandy’s cut. It was Milo who would eventually find Ella and he was made to feel most unreasonable when he admitted that he’d taken her to the police station. As Ella was taken back to her foster parents, Mandy was taken in for questioning but released with just a caution. Later in the week, Luke turned up at Cindy’s to speak with Mandy and attempted to win her back. However, Mandy was having none of it, and announced that she was moving in with Cindy.

Elsewhere, Cleo and Joel revelled in their new relationship, but not everyone was happy. The pair discussed how they were going to break the news to Myra, but it turned out that they didn’t have to, as she walked in on them kissing and was furious that Joel had been “seduced by sins of the flesh”. With Myra refusing to support the pair, Cleo announced that she was moving out. Joel clearly wasn’t all that thrilled with the idea and locked the pair in the bedroom until they sorted out their differences. Eventually, Myra came to see that Joel was the man for Cleo and gave the pair her blessing, but not before telling Joel that she would be doing God’s work and keeping an eye on him. “And I’m less forgiving”, she told him. Look out, Joel...

Also this week, Hunter was delighted when he was offered a place at an art college in Edinburgh. This was also excellent news for Neeta, who pointed out that this would be their opportunity to be together properly. However, their plan was brought to an abrupt end when Mac discovered the truth about their relationship. It all started when the police showed up to inform Mac that his car had been spotted speeding just outside a town some distance away. Not only that, but a speed camera had caught footage of the driver and passenger and Mac was asked to identify them. Mac was horrified to see that the culprits were Neeta and Hunter and after sneaking a look at her phone, realised they’d been having an affair. Mac later confronted Neeta but told her he wouldn’t go to the police as long as she broke things off with Hunter and came back to him, to which Neeta agreed.  Once again, this story is just falling flat with me. Mac’s an arse, but no amount of vile behaviour from him is going to make me root for Neeta and her schoolboy lover.

Finally, Ste’s trial date was creeping ever closer and Harry was struggling to cope with the realisation that Ste could be found guilty of murdering Amy. Meanwhile, Tegan was horrified when Ry Ry informed her that James had set Ste up and insisted that they must report him. When Ry Ry refused, Tegan set about reporting James herself and recorded a confession from him, which James soon got his hands on and destroyed...

5 Things We Learnt This Week:
1. Staff in Price Slice will do sweet fuck all when they catch someone shoplifting.
2. Napal isn’t a place. It’s a state of mind.
3. Waving a tennis racket around during an argument will not help your case.
4. Joel is most definitely not Jesus.
5. A feather duster isn’t just for cleaning. It can also be used to break apart a couple you think shouldn’t be together.
One Last Thing:

Forget “who killed Amy,” the big mystery intriguing me at the moment is “what the hell is the deal with Milo?” We’ve already seen his tattoo, which reads “numquam obliviscar”, meaning “I shall never forget” in Latin. This week, he displayed some more strange behaviour when he was shown looking at a collection of newspaper articles about the Cunningham’s and he seemed to know who Mandy was before he’d been introduced to her (something she later questioned him about). So, is he a secret family member who was given away as a baby? Did Mr C have another child he’d not told anyone about? Or is he not connected to them at all and is just trying to find out as much as he can about his landlady’s family? Hopefully all will be revealed soon!
