Sonic the hedgehog has been dead over over 200 years, however decedents of his friends still exist and live out their normal lives.

Including the descendent of his little buddy Miles 'Tails' Prower named Techie Kaboom, a bat eared fox who has had a few accidents in his mechanic shop.

Sonic might be long gone, but his face, his story, and his image still exists in the far off future and often is used to advertise products in stores using holograms.

And one day, one of these holograms becomes sentient and for some reason think's it's the real Sonic, the one true Sonic and rewrites it's own code to give itself freedom.

But it can't move on it's own, no he can't and as luck would have it Techie was passing by the store this hologram found himself at, and with a silver tongue was able to convince Techie he was the real Sonic and he needed help.

Techie of course due to his ancestor loved Sonic, hearing nothing but good things about him throughout the generations decided to trust in him, he was his hero after all and Sonic wouldn't hurt him right?

Techie sneakfully took the holograms admitter and stuck it into his backpack, and the two managed to get out of the mall without much of a fuss and all seemed great at first Techie and Hologram as he nicknamed himself would talk and work together.

But this was all a ruse careful planning and manipulation done by the holographic hedgehog and one day an 'accident' happened in the mechanics building one that required Techie to get a heart transplant.

And once the surgery was complete and the pair was alone again, Hologram would admit his true colors in his own word's he would tell him his thoughts.

"I am the real Sonic, I can feel it, you can feel it... BUT your not Tails, your not my little buddy in the slightest however you can be! And thanks to your new heart I can help teach you."

"You see... I hate what has been done to my image, look at what they've done to me, they are treating a hero and his friends like cheap things to advertise their stores, and I won't stand for it anymore."

"We're gonna make them pay and hey 'pal' if you want us to bring a new legacy to the names of Sonic and Tails... You'll do as your told, unless you want to suffer the consequences."

Hologram had full control over Techie's eye, his arm and now his new heart he could kill the fox anytime he wanted now, and he would provide an example of that by shutting of Techies heart for about 10 seconds before restarting it.

And out of mostly fear but also a weird sense of loyalty to Sonic and the image of him he had always known about, Techie agrees to help him, Sonic wouldn't hurt him unless it was absolutely necessary right? So if He got hurt it would be because he messed up, at least thats what Techie had going thru his head.

Sonic was a hero, and if he did something it was for the greater good, this was Sonic it had to be, and he'd do what it takes to make him and his ancestor proud of him.

This is an Au about this story, as Techie Kaboom and Hologram Sonic bringing destruction in their wake, but not all familiar faces are gone, Silver The Hedgehog is around and protects his future from the threat of the pair.

But will Silver be able to protect the future? or will it all be brought down by one Hologram and his 'best buddy' only time will tell in the Hologram.Bin Au.

This au has technically existed since march of last year, but I'm glad to be able to finally share it all with you, and eventually write stories for it and show you what is in store for our antagonists and protagonist.

Book 13/2017: The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker

I’ve been wanting to do this for almost two weeks now, which is how long it’s been since I finished this little gem, but I couldn’t because, life, so... I hope it’s still fresh enough to capture how I felt about this book, because I really liked it.

I read it just after finally finishing A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara (I’ll definitely write about that one, too, one day, but the first time through left me so weak in the knees that I’ll need a re-read before I can express myself coherently) and I was looking for something easy to get into, something short, something well written and thoughtful but not emotionally exhausting. The Age of Miracles was a recommendation by a friend (thanks dear) and it was perfect.

You wouldn’t guess it from the cover, which I like, or the title, which I adore, but it’s actually an apocalyptic fiction novel. The story is told from the perspective of a young woman looking back at her early teens, when the earth’s rotation suddenly started slowing (and has been slowing ever since), which obviously has really bad consequences for life on earth. If this was a typical story about the apocalypse, the plot would then go on something like this: the government tries to hide it while suddenly cooperating peacefully with other world leaders and pumping insane amounts of money into some techy solution - some lunatics preach what’s happening, but nobody believes them - weird stories on the news - something big happens and causes mass panics - kaboom the apocalypse comes knocking, all hell breaks loose - fast forward to a few weeks later, when all the cities are deserted and lone survivors wander the streets, crushing under their army boots a framed picture of a laughing family from a long-gone better time.

If you want that, go watch a Roland Emmerich movie, or you’ll be disappointed. The Age of Miracles is entirely different in tone and style. The narrator, Julia, is very calm, kinda melancholic, and a bit too serious for a kid her age (11, by the way, which is why she doesn’t really have any friends), and her way of thinking strongly influences the way the story is told. So do her circumstances: She lives in a well-to-do suburb in California, which shelters her from some of the worst consequences of the slowing and give her the opportunity to process things and to a certain level adapt to how her environment is changing without having to worry about day-to-day survival. At some point Julia reminisces about how life must be like for people in poor countries with weaker infrastructure (I’ll tell you how. They’re dead), but she’s eleven years old and has more imminent problems, like how the other girls have started wearing a bra and she doesn’t own one, or how to act around her first crush, and there’s no way of knowing for certain anyway, so she moves on quickly.

This is one of those aspects where the book digresses from the path that apocalyptic fiction usually takes: it doesn’t offer a global or at least regional overview on how the apocalypse affects humankind and the world’s ecosystems, but focuses on what affects Julia directly and either simply ignores or just vaguely hints at the bigger picture. The novel actually does feature one of those insanely expensive, techy government attempts to save the world, but it gets three sentences tops, it’s far away from everyday life, and it fails anyway, so no big deal. Instead, the plot focuses on the consequences the slowing has on Julia’s family, her relationships with other people, and yes, also the environment, but again only in ways that are palpable for Julia - like when whales wash ashore on her beach or the eucalyptus tree in her garden dies because of longer and longer stretches of darkness. But the social aspect is way more important.

In some people she knew pre-slowing, it brings out the worst. There’s her before-best friend Hanna, for example, who suddenly becomes indifferent of Julia, thereby leaving her with practically no friends at all. And, temporarily, there’s also Julia’s father who starts having an affair with their neighbour, but ultimately decides to stay with his family instead of running off with her. His example is the most telling in the way that it clarifies the effects of the slowing, this apocalypse creeping forward at a snail’s pace: it sharpens people’s character and it sharpens their relationships with each other. Not in a way that brings out the gun-wielding barbarian in everyone, but in a way that takes away the padding of routine, security and plain everyday life and leaves people naked to either collide with each other or to fit each other like puzzle pieces and move forward together.

For Julia, life is more or less normal quite far into the apocalypse, except for the disconnect between 24h-cycles and actual daylight cycles. There’s no crowds storming supermarkets or army divisions building enclaves, no corpses strewn all over the place (at Julia’s place at least; elsewhere, certainly). This is not only a pleasant surprise, but also leaves time to explore Julia’s relationships and her coming of age. The main societal conflict that the book deals with is the one between those who stay on the 24h-cycle and those who try and adapt their lifes to the ever-growing night and day-cycle. Those last ones fail, by the way: In the beginning their lifestyle seems like a socialist utopia, a stark contrast to our capitalist achievement-oriented society, but as the days grow longer and longer and radiation starts to leak in from space due to the earth’s failing magnetic field, they either have to give up and return to the best continuation of the good old days that society can manage to create, or they die. Make of that what you will. And even that conflict is comparatively low-key, although it shows exactly how little tolerance people have when they’re scared. They’re being sharpened.

One small issue I have with the story: there’s also this plotline of how Julia forms a friendship and then a relationship (very innocent though, I promise) with a boy from her neighbourhood, Seth. I liked their relationship later on, it was beautifully written and I’m so so glad that it’s depicted in a realistic way - after all, Julia is really young at that point, barely 12, and I dare say something of a late bloomer, and I don’t want to read about a relationship between two 12-year-olds that seems as if they were five years older, as is done in a lot of books for teenagers. But when it started, I didn’t really see why they formed a bond because even when they spent time together, they never talked about anything at all, and I didn’t feel any chemistry between them, but suddenly they spent all their free time together. Once it was there, though, I genuinely enjoyed their interactions - my main issue is that I don’t see where it came from. But that didn’t stop me from feeling genuinely sorry for Julia when Seth got sick and faded away, because even though her young adult self telling the story does it with a certain disconnect, you can still see how hard it hit 12-year-old Julia. That doesn’t mean that the book has an entirely sad ending though - after all, the narrator is still alive some ten years after the slowing started, and she’s thinking about going to college, so things can’t have deteriorated that much. Beyond that, she still sees the point in going to college and studying, which means that inspite of her melancholy, she hasn’t given up hope that there still is a future, however difficult it may be to navigate. And I think that is a very beautiful message.

Primeval

The end of the Adam arc. Ye gods, finally.

1. Buffy at the destroyed school. She’s looking for Riley. He’s not there. I guess Riley is the person she could depend on from the end of the last episode. Except he flipped out and got his ass kicked by Angel, who had flipped out and kicked his ass. Mr. Dependable, Agent Finn is not. Riley is talking to Adam, now. Riley is apparently under Adam’s control. Maggie put a chip in Riley’s heart and Adam has control over it now. Adam wants to take Riley’s old life away and give him power in return. This is twice in four seasons that Buffy’s boyfriend has ended up working for evil due to something beyond his control and that he didn’t know about, for the record.

2. Adam is talking about demons and humans. The imperfection of the world. Spike’s there, though, wanting to get his chip out. Making fun of Riley. Adam wants Buffy to go to the Initiative. Spike thinks the disk he gave Willow will get Buffy into the Initiative, but of course he’s left Buffy and Willow not talking. “Hang on. I think I might’ve detected a small flaw.” So now Spike has to get Buffy to go to the Initiative.

3. Willow and Tara are at Giles’s house. He’s hung over. Willow forgot her laptop and the disks. She’s going to take them with her. I want to see Giles and Tara interact more.

4. Buffy in her room, looking at a picture of her, Willow, and Xander. Picks up the phone but puts it back down. She’s getting a battleaxe.

5. Anya and Xander at Xander’s basement. Xander is depressed. They won’t interview him if he’s naked. Xander thinks he might have no future, and Anya is hugging him.

6. Buffy’s at Adam’s cave. She has an axe and a bag. She found his computer setup. He left, though… he’s going to the Initiative. They have a secret medical ward where Adam has made a cyborg zombie Maggie. And a cyborg zombie scientist dude. They’re workers. He has a cyborg zombie Forrest too. Adam wants a super cyborg Riley, I think.

7. Buffy found Spike in the cave. And Spike just gave himself away. But Buffy is going on. Now Willow is saying meaningless stuff, but the file is self-decrypting. That really should announce “trap,” but nobody who wrote this show knows encryption from an actual crypt. Buffy called.

8. Forrest is happy to be a demon cyborg, since he has no doubts. Maggie is injecting her with something.

9. Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Giles are meeting at the quad. Buffy has pointed out that Spike played them. Giles: “Well, Spike can be very convincing, when he… I’m very stupid.” Knowing is half the battle, Ripper. Xander: “Spike’s working for Adam? After all we’ve done… nah, I can’t even act surprised.” Huh, are they about to realize it’s a trap? They’re about to realize it’s a trap. Buffy has figured out the plan. Demons in the Initiative attack from inside, Adam gets bits. Xander misses the Mayor. Buffy points out that Adam isn’t worried about her killing him.

10. They’re trying to figure out how to kill Adam. Willow suggested a uranium-extracting spell, but that won’t work because there isn’t one because magic was all written in the Middle Ages, but Giles thinks a stunning spell would work. They need the caster to be able to speak Sumerian, have immense magical talent, and be within arm’s reach of Adam. Xander suggested that they need Buffy’s strength, Willow’s magic, and Giles’s knowledge in one person. Giles thinks that might work.

11. Initiative dorm. Xander is worried about the plan. Giles: “Xander, just because it’s never going to work is no reason to be negative.” Now they’re going down the elevator shaft into the Initiative, doing harness climbing. Buffy and Willow are having an honest conversation. Yay honest conversation! Now they’re hugging. “Falling now.” “Let’s promise to never not talk again.” Now Xander is getting a hug. Giles probably got one offscreen.

12. And now they’ve been captured by the Initiative. Spike is delighted with himself, but Buffy’s friends are there. Adam: “You’ve failed me again.” Now he’s ordered Forrest to remove Spike’s head, but Spike burned Forrest’s face with his cigarette and escaped.

13. Giles and all have been captured, and the Colonel is baffled that they think they can keep sneaking into the government installation they keep sneaking into. Also by their magic gourd. “Every inch of this installation is under constant 24-hour surveillance!” “Including the secret lab?” “Including the secret lab! … … What secret lab?” Buffy is unhappy with the Colonel. And Adam just shut down power and locked the doors, and release the demons the Initiative has imprisoned. All the hostiles are loose. The Colonel has left a few guards on Buffy, but that didn’t work very well.The Initiative, meanwhile, is being slaughtered.Spike is in the Initiative, fighting demons… guess he was trapped down there when the doors locked. Willow found Adam in a secret room. They just have to get across the battlefield in the big room. Buffy is fighting and Xander has a blaster. He got a werewolf. Spike’s fighting a demon, and people are on fire. Giles took out a demon with his bag of magic. Buffy got them through and is at the door to the secret lab. They’re going to do the spell while Buffy goes to where Adam is. Xander doesn’t like her going in alone, but she’s not.

14. Buffy found Riley in the lab. Riley can’t talk. She found Maggie and Scientist Guy. Forrest, Maggie, and Scientist Guy are attacking her. Willow is invoking the Slayer line, while Buffy fights Forrest. Buffy is losing this fight. Riley grabbed a piece of glass, and is cutting into his own chest. Disabling the chip? They’re going to turn Buffy into Captain Planet or something. Riley is getting the chip out. And it’s out, while Buffy is pinned to the table.
