Tanzan Shrine, Nara: The World’s Only Thirteen-Storied Wooden Pagoda
Tanzan Shrine in Sakurai, Nara is renowned for cherry blossoms in spring and leaves in autumn. The shrine also has a deep connection to Japan’s history. Would you like to feel the eternal nature of time at traditional Tanzan Shrine?

Ema 絵馬 (wish plaques/votive plaques)
The placing of ema is a Shinto custom that can be seen at shrines across Japan. Because there has been a lot of mixing, you can also see them at some Buddhist temples.
Ema started as high art objects, but in the Edo period, it became more common for individuals to buy small plaques to tell the gods their wishes. People usually write their wishes on the plain back side of the plaque.
Common themes are the current year’s zodiac sign, an image of a god or spirit connected to the shrine, or even a modern character or anime image.
People buy plaques for around 500 to 1000 yen, and the money helps to maintain the shrine
The ema pictured are from, top to bottom, left to right:
Chuson-ji (temple), Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture (Honshu)
Aoba Castle, Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture (Honshu)
Ishite-ji (temple), Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture (Shikoku)
Oishi-jinja (shrine), Ako, Hyōgo Prefecture (Honshu)
