You Decide. Is this spooky story true?
You Decide. Is this spooky story true?
The spooky stories Are they true? You decide. Okay, I don’t know how to separate truth from fiction, superstition from the truth, or fable from fact.  But I still like to put my ear to the ground to hear what’s rumbling out there.  I may not agree, but I respect the history of stories. Where did they come from? This time of year, spooky stories abound.  This is one. Rock Faces So, the spooky…

Thinking about the policy of systematic extermination of the bison in the US as a tool of genocide against Native Americans...
Thinking about the new policy to reintroduce bison to areas that are a fraction of their original range and increase the size of herds/herd management without involving Native Americans or native land management practices...

I’ve submitted my second letter to the NPS, asking to NOT remove the wild horses from the TRNP. They list them as “livestock”, and according to the US gov, they aren’t “livestock”. (See letter below in quotes)

Guys I cannot stop thinking about my Dakotas trip from last year. We’re going to Colorado/Utah/New Mexico in a couple months but will it compare to horseback riding in Medora? Will it come close to Theodore Roosevelt National Park? Will it even touch Keystone and the Black Hills?? We’ll see hashtag doubtful

The US government has thousands of wild horses and donkeys in stock pens already, with minimal room to move, minimal or no shelter, nothing to help ease the animals’ anxiety or boredom, and minimal veterinary care. They are branded, gelded, and cooped up forever until someone decides they’re too old or too boring to sell or too feisty or too sick, then they’re sold for bare minimum to kill buyers who ship them off in crowded trucks to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada.
The BLM keeps their herd numbers down to just barely genetically viable. They shoot mares with darts to prevent them from foaling for a couple of seasons, which is safe. But they have considered ripping out mares’ ovaries with invasive tongs. Something they would never subject a domestic animal to… There are reports that some BLMs kill horses that have cream dilute genes and blue eyes just because they falsely believe blue eyed horses are more prone to blindness (which is not something that bothers wild animals as long as they are in familiar territory and have family around to guide them, and they’re not in pain.) Cream dilutes, I would think, would sell well because they’re unusually colored and would catch the eye of more buyers who might pass up a more common bay or chestnut.
It’s bad enough thousands of dollars are spent on helicopters to terrify horses into running for their lives (exhausting and frequently injuring and sometimes killing them, especially vulnerable foals!) into holding pens where they are separated from their herds by gender and age, freeze branded, and stuck with nothing but a water trough and hay.
Now the BLM wants to remove every horse from Theodore Roosevelt National Park. For what? Money? It’d cost more to remove them than to leave them as tourist attractions. Because of vehicle accidents? Put cattle guards in the road or signs to warn vehicles. Competition with native fauna? Equines dig water holes when natural sources dry up. Equines nip the tops off of grass blades and move on, letting the grass recover. Deer root through equine feces to eat seeds. All animals benefit from added water availability. And let’s not forget, many National and state parks allow grazing permits to ranchers, putting wild animals in direct competition with domestic animals. Domestic animals that have cloven hooves that rip tussocks of grass, pollute water by staying in it during the heat instead of taking turns like wild equine herds do, and worse: Rip the grass out by the roots. Sheep and cows destroy grass. Horses and donkeys do not. So who is really destroying the parks and competing with native fauna?
October 25 is the last day to submit appeals to Congress about the removal of wild horses from TRNP. Please help spread the word.
