We see a little bit of his highschool self being very similar to his current self but less obviously traumatized. I think he always had some compulsive people-pleasing tendencies, from a mixture of what was expected of him as a politician's child and some privilege guilt. He probably learned how to be whatever was expected of him in the situations he was put in, good at masking and conforming to social norms, and at charming people, but not good enough that he could keep himself from trying to help people when he saw the opportunity. He was probably seen as having a savior complex (which isn't exactly wrong). I think his complex with desire started young as well--I imagine that he had some queer realizations early in puberty and was told this wasn't acceptable for someone in his position, and internalized the idea that his personal desires needed to be shoved down for the greater good.
