Suzanna Collins never fucking misses. TBOSAS is fantastic but primarily the way she shows an origin story for a villain, making him sympathetic without ever forgiving him. Snow is a product of his circumstances, but he also continues to be awful and continuously makes the choices that make him a bad person. Choice after choice he chooses wrong. He knows he’s making the selfish choice and does it anyway. He didn’t have to be like that - his cousin Tigris turned out completely different because of her choices. Snow is a guy who could’ve been good and choose to be bad, who could have chosen to be a little more selfless and improved so many people’s lives - but he kept choosing to be selfish.

what are some underrated books you wish more people knew about?

im not the man to ask this question to i think like i have extremely mainstream middle of the road taste.....but some of my faves of all time required reading if you are friends with me for a certain number of years (not really but my efforts to force people to read these books will increase with every 5 years spent as friends) are deerskin by robin mckinley, maurice by e.m. forster, piranesi by suzanna clarke, the entirety of the fullmetal alchemist manga, the woman in white by wilkie collins, good omens .... (all of which i think i have already talked to you about.....LOL)

like i truly dont think any of those books are underrated ... i like to think i read reasonably widely but all of my faves over the past decade have just been ones that are a lot of other people's faves too
