The Castaways of Sunny Isles, Miami, Florida, pictured in postcards from the 1960s
Opened in 1952, the Castaways sat on both sides of Collins Ave and initially offered 72 rooms, a coffee shop, cocktail lounge and a waterfall entrance. In 1958, owner Joe Hart renovated the property, added 60 more rooms and opened the iconic Wreck Bar, known for its nude go-go dancers and celebrity visitors.
Like most motels along Miami’s motel row, the Castaways suffered as tourism declined in the 1970s. Hart sold the property for $14 million in 1979. It closed in 1982 and was demolished in 1985. It has since been replaced by Oceania, a high end luxury condominium. Source
