it's fascinating to me how moiraine is so dedicated to the white tower that she's willing to endure the indignities of being novice and accepted, and more generally dedicated to the good of the world that she basically gives up her entire life in search for the dragon, but the fucking second she had an inkling the white tower was going to set her up as sun queen she was out of there like a shot. incredible. moiraine sweetie what dark parts of the damodred blood are you so afraid of??

Okay so I’m still thinking about Moiraine. This time I’m over analyzing the show’s costuming choices.
We learn in New Spring during her Aes Sedai test that Moiraine has taken to wearing her hair down in the tower, even though she pins it up in Cairhien. (“Once she was dressed, she began to feel every inch the Lady Moiraine Damodred. Only having her hair arranged in elaborate coils on the side of her head could have made it more so. When had she begun wearing her hair loose?”) This sounds awfully like how the show has Moiraine’s hair pinned up in 01x06 when she’s running around Tar Valon.
We also know that Moiraine’s kesiera is associated with Cairhien, particularly since she has to stop wearing it when she gets to the tower and is a novice and then accepted. (“She had regretted not being able to wear that here, but even after six years her hands remembered how to weave the thin gold chain into her hair so the small sapphire hung in the middle of her forehead. Studying herself in a wall mirror with a scroll-worked wooden frame, she smiled. She might lack the ageless face yet, but now she looked like the Lady Moiraine Damodred, and Lady Moiraine Damodred had navigated the Sun Palace where hidden currents could pull you under even at fifteen or sixteen. Now she was ready to navigate the currents here.”) Again, we see her wearing her kesiera in 01x06 once she’s off the road and back in Tar Valon/the tower.
Specifically, both of these things make her feel like “the Lady Moiraine Damodred.” So in 01x06 she gets to Tar Valon, immediately dresses up like Lady Moiraine Damodred, and starts really walking around like she owns the place and speaking in Aes Sedai (but also Daes Dae’mar) riddles. The general presentation she is trying to give off in Tar Valon is that of Lady Moiraine Damodred. Maybe this is to make her feel stronger, competent, and sort of hype herself up in a dangerous place and situation - ready to navigate the currents like when she first earned the shawl. Maybe it’s to emphasize her noble background that it seems she and Siuan likely used in staging their “breakup.” It’s likely a combination of many things.
But the viewer can see that she hasn’t gone fully Cairhien or Lady Moiraine Damodred. She is still wearing her bolero that is part of her traveling look. She also unpins her hair when she goes to meet Siuan 🥺 There are times in the tower she needs more armor than just her birthright (so she dons the bolero) or less (she’s safe as just herself with Siuan).
Then in season two we actually see Moiraine in Cairhien. She’s wearing a dress that sounds like how Cairhienen fashion is described in the books (“their dark skirts were so wide they would have had to turn sideways to pass through any doorway narrower than those of the manor”) and she’s sometimes wearing the kesiera - but notably her hair is always down. Maybe fashion has just changed, but Anvaere wears her hair up still. Moiraine is back home, but what is her role here now? What would it mean to be Lady Moiraine Damodred in Cairhien?
We see how this version of herself that brings her strength in Tar Valon and the White Tower is more complicated here. It doesn’t seem to fit as comfortably. Even with the Damodred name vastly improved, Moiraine is seemingly holding back. She could have been queen of this city, and while it’s one thing to draw strength from that knowledge in another city far from home, think how complicated it would be to know that when actually in the place you turned your back from. AND she can’t channel. She isn’t fully herself anymore, as an Aes Sedai or a Cairhienen, and we as viewers can once again tell.

While im digging Moiraine being older does this mean in the show Elayne isnt her niece? Her sister said that her son would be marrying the queen, which would be weird if their brother had been married to her or am i missing something?
So I obviously don't know for sure what the situation is, but I don't think its technically impossible for Elayne to still be her niece, there would just be some moving things around.
First off, I'm assuming they're making Barthanes her nephew that is marrying the queen this time around, as we know that he's been cast and I don't think they'd want to get too confusing with the Damodred family tree. Also I'm like pretty absolutely certain that the queen he's marrying is the queen of Cairhien and not Morgase. I believe there have been other references to Cairhien having a queen and not a king at this moment, and I assume that if he was marrying into an entirely other country, that would have come up as being the spouse to a foreign monarch (even if it is Caemlyn) isn't quite so desirable as being on the Sun Throne. I'm assuming Barthanes being engaged to whoever is on the Sun Throne currently (we have no idea who) is why they went with a queen.
But as for Elayne and Moiraine directly, the main complication in them being related would be the time frame. I think that can technically be worked around. Moiraine and Taringail were already half siblings in the books, with Moiraine and her full sisters being from their father's second marriage and Taringail from the first. This could easily be switched around, and I'm sure that Cairhienen nobility are perfectly fine with having creepy age gaps, so Taringail's mother could be much younger and thus have the gap between Moiraine and Taringail be pretty large. Then I'm also sure that Taringail is willing to be a fucking creep himself and marry Morgase and Tigraine when he's quite a bit older than them. Its not great, but it is plausible.
At the end of the day, I'm willing to accept that (as much as I want it addressed) their relationship doesn't really matter all that much, but it does have me worried about Galad, because I actually do need that mama's boy in the show and I'll be so sad if he isn't or if they make him Elayne's full brother.

some things i’m currently delighted by:
- siuan realizing aes sedai are allowed to curse as much as they want
- information about the white tower bank and how moiraine manages her finances
- siuan getting drawn into the blues’ eyes and ears
- moiraine grappling with how much she does not want to be sun queen
- tbh every tidbit about Growing Up Damodred
- every time lan shows up long enough to think i better keep clear of aes sedai
- moiraine’s literal nightmares about the dragon reborn decades before she finds rand
- tamra trying to find baby rand with the bounty thing
- every parallel being drawn between moiraine and rand and elayne
- the reminders that moiraine and siuan are fairly young aes sedai!! it keeps taking me out how elaida, verin, etc are way older and have been doing this much longer

Loved your fanfic! Baby Moiraine is adorable. Any wot recs?
Thanks for asking and sorry for answering this a bit late. I wanted to write a rec anyway, so anon, your timing’s excellent! There are a few things, however, I need to clear up first: I’m not suggesting here, that these are the best fics ever written in the fandom, this is not a hall of fame. This is a collection of my comfort fics as a reader who loves to read intricate and unlikely AUs about Siuan/Moiraine and plotless stories about That weird thing Lan and Moiraine have. I’m 100% sure there are great fics out there about Rand&Mat and the Polycule(tm), it’s not a judgement of value that I’m leaving stuff out.
Also before the rec, psst here’s my wishlist of the things I’d love to see on AO3: the “How I met your Greenman” story, outtakes from Birgitte’s lives, an entire story from Aviendha’s POV. If you’ve read anything similar, hmu pls (I mean I was desperate enough to write a Birgitte story recently, rip.)
An incomplete list of fics I adore (might write a 2nd part):
Their Dinners by aptasi (T)
A truly in-character piece about Lan and Moiraine: there is no dialogue, they are just having dinner in complete silence and that’s the entire plot. Such a brilliant story, I’d say this is my favourite but aptasi has tons of gutting short stories  and I’m not able to just choose one. aptasi also writes amazing  Rand & Moiraine dialogues, the kind that leaves you staring out of the foggy window, rethinking your ways.
echoes of her dynasty by alittlelesspain (E) There are so many things in this fanfic I still think about every once in a while, just to list a few of them:
- Alric has an actual personality in this story?? he’s the saltiest ace/aro Warder and I absolutely loved how being someone on the grayscale was not depicted as being innocent or clueless about stuff, but “When she looked up, Moiraine was staring at her, not the puzzle. “Oh,” said Alric in a voice of revelation, when Siuan got back to the inn that night, puzzle dangling uselessly from her hand, and brain equally useless to holding any sort of sensible conversation with him. “I understand now. She’s equally pathetic.”
- most of the story is from Siuan’s POV which is a relatively rare thing and it was so amazing to stay in her mind for a while. Technically this story is a Very Reluctant Sun Queen AU where Moiraine re-builds Cairhien with her Dream Team (Siuan, Alric, Lan and Bukama) instead of becoming Aes Sedai. There are also heavy Beauty and the Beast undertones, as the story starts with Siuan encountering the last surviving Damodred lurking in the Royal Library with her stone faced Borderlander bbf
- a battle is won because Siuan loves to chat with Ogier stonemasons and re-uses a centuries-old waterway for her tactics.
- a lot of this fic is about the importance of rebuilding lost knowledge and making education more accessible. The entire thing has such a positive message while keeping the reader on their toes by staying brutally realistic at the same time. Ugh, just make a huge pot of tea and read this.
The Path of Fires and Foxes by LarraineLynch (M)
Time-travel AU from multiple POVs and I loved reading all of them. The first book of this series is already finished, it’s so intricate and masterfully woven that I don’t know how to describe this story, I just want to say that her weekly updates kept me going through a vacationless summer. What I liked best about it was 1. that instead of pitting women against each other the author lets them communicate (or for Moiraine’s part, manipulate, but we love her nonetheless) and plot against the system 2. it felt so gross to read about stilling men then leaving them to go crazy and die alone through the series and finally, this fic addresses this waste of human life and potential and creates an amazing solution.
cause for separation by fuelprices (G)
Delicious long-distance relationship angst and crack! don’t want to spoil the plot, I just want to say I love her way of writing the Siuan-Lan dynamic <3 (+check out the rest if you’re unlike me and can read some good hurt & comfort stuff rn) Fractal by aptasi (E)
Moiraine and Siuan have a debate about the metaphysical nature of time and the Wheel while having sex. I had to go for a 10k run after reading this to be able to function as a person for the rest of the day, thanks.

I need y'all to stop referring to Moiraine as "the heir to the Sun Throne", or saying anything else to imply that the natural course of events would have made her the queen of Cairhien. She was, at best, an heir to the sun throne, for like, a few months after Laman's death.
The criteria for a candidate for the Sun Throne appear to be, in descending order of necessity
Not married to the Daughter Heir of Andor
Member of one of the noble houses of Cairhien
Willing to advance your claim (or someone else is determined to advance it for you)
Able to gather public support for your claim
Related to the most recent previous King or Queen
Moiraine is nobility, she's Laman's niece, and she's not married to the Daughter Heir of Andor, which for some reason would be directly disqualifying. But that's...it. She doesn't want the job. No one in Cairhien has seen or heard from her since she was like 16. The only thing she has over her sisters, as far as public support, is that no one knows any specific reason that she wouldn't be a good Queen, because they don't know anything about her. Not to say that Queen Moiraine Damodred isn't a plausible AU. If she'd wanted to work for it, she could probably have taken the throne, even without the Tower's support, much less with it. If she hadn't been very quick and passably clever, the Tower might have put her on the throne whether she would or no. But there's no version of anything where Moiraine becoming the queen of Cairhien is the path of least resistance, and especially no version of anything where she has spent most of her life both expecting to inherit and not wanting to. And certainly, that's not an accurate way to talk about canon Moiraine. If you want a canonically plausible Reluctant Princess, write about Faile.

Moiraine Damodred, First of Her Name, Queen of Cairhien.
Four.
I sit on the Sun Throne in full regalia as the contingent of nobles shout ‘Light Bless Queen Moiraine Damodred, First of Her Name, Queen of Cairhien!’ over and over again. Annie is the loudest of them all. Afterwards there is a grand ball and I make sure to dance and talk with everyone, and I mean I have danced with every man in the room, purely to keep a Daes Dae’mar war from starting between houses. My sister Innloine comes up to me and curtsies. “Your Majesty, this is a wonderful ball.” she says sweetly and I smile. “Thank you, Innloine, how are my niece and nephews?” I ask her and she grins and begins going into a long winded conversation over how her ‘precious angels’ are doing. I sit through it all and I love hearing about them and I tell her as much, bound by the oaths as I am. “What about you, Moiraine? Undoubtedly you’ll be looking for a match, after all a kingdom needs heirs.” she teases lightly and I smile and sigh. “I haven’t even considered it yet, truthfully. I don’t know who or when I’ll marry. Or at least not yet.” I tell her and she shakes her head and grins. “Perhaps some Borderlander?” she teases with a little shoulder shimmy and I giggle, light I had forgotten just how light Innloine could get. “Perhaps…” I respond and she sighs. “Good luck.” she says before being whisked by her husband to dance, with a small bow to me.
Like Papa, Innloine had married for love, and love she did, Gerald is a good man, great even, and adores his wife. “I’ll be back to dance with you next, My Queen.” he tells me with a wink, making Innloine giggle softly.
It has been three months and I am at war. Galldrian Riatin is raising an army to try and overthrow me and I couldn’t be any more annoyed. So I am very surprised when my guards drag his mother into the throne room while I’m dealing with a delegation of Greens, Grays, Yellows, and a Blue that quite frankly I did not ask for. “Your Majesty, the Lady-” one of the guards begin but I stop him. “Mistress Riatin.” I correct easily and the look on the 40 something woman’s face is priceless. “I’ve stripped you of your fortune, titles, and lands, Mistress Riatin. You raised a traitor. And I have no need for those in my country. So you have 5 seconds to tell me what it is in the Light’s name your doing here.” I tell her simply and she nods. “Your Majesty, I had no knowledge of my son’s wrong doings until he pulled me from court a month ago. I swear it on my soul. Ever since I’ve been gathering information to give to you.” she says, “If you’ll allow me to grab them from my pocket?” she asks and I motion for one of the guards to do it. He hastily hands it over and I skim the contents. “How am I to trust you when you’ve given exactly what I need to see your son hung until conscience, disembowled, and quartered?” I ask her and a gasp goes through the room, that was the highest punishment for treason I could give.
“I-I” she seems to be holding something back. “My grandson.” she says simply and my eyes evidently disappear into my hairline, I hadn’t even noticed the bundle strapped to her chest. “I was not aware your son was married.” I say rather simply and she sighs. “He isn’t, the boy is illegitimate, I-I took him in. I- If there is a chance you can at least spare my grandchild, even if you don’t spare me, by giving you this information, then I count it one of my greatest successes.” she says and I lean back into my chair, contemplating it. “I happen to be in need of a new maid.” I say rather simply and the Aes Sedai to her left look dumbfounded. “On two conditions, the first is that if your son contacts you, you report it immediately, if you don’t and I find out, and I will find out, you’ll be charged with treason. The second is that you may not have any contact with the babe until you have proven yourself to me. Or I will throw you out and you will never see the boy again.” I tell her and sher face breaks, her bottom lip wobbling. “Now, notice my wording here, I am not making these conditions to be cruel, and I never said until I trust you. If you prove yourself to me then you can see the boy. However, I will be making him my ward.” I tell her and she nods. “One toe out of line Mistress Riatin.” I warn her and flick my hand. “Have her report to my steward and have the babe put in the nursery.” I say to the guards and they take the babe from her and pull her from the hall. “Sister, how smart is that?” Alela Sedai asks me and I sigh. “I can keep an eye on her easier that way.” I tell her. “And I replaced the Headmaid of my House with a woman from Kandor just so it pisses people off because she’s fiercely loyal to me. That and she wasn’t strong enough to test for Aes Sedai and I remember her briefly from my second year as a novice.” I add with a shrug. Alela looks skeptical and I cock my head to one side inquisitively. “So, will you be leaving?” I ask simply and they all look at eachother. “I did not request aid, so unless you’re all skilled in healing and intend to help with the wounded for an extended length of time, you’re useless to me as I don’t intend to use the One Power against my countrymen.” I intone as I stand and walk from the room, my sister following after me.
“What was that Raine?” she asks as soon as we’re in the family wing. “I will not be a puppet, and I will not use the One Power against my own people. I will not be Laman.” I tell her and she frowns. “You could never be Laman.” she says and I smile. “Annie I think it goes without saying, but… don’t harm the child.” I tell her after a moment and she looks at me. “Moiraine I’d never!” she exclaims. “I’m not saying you would, I just, I trust you Anvaere. I just thought, I have no intentions of ever harming children.” I tell her, and it must dawn on her why in that moment. “I am not Moressin.” she says fiercely and I smile. “Of course not.” I respond. “I’ll put together a list of wet nureses and nannies that are in the city that we can trust.” she says and I smile and nod.
On the field in my tent I am arguing with my army’s commanders, or what is left of them, trying to get them to listen to me. “We do not need to be shedding more Cairhien blood!’ I bellow at them. “And I will not use the One Power against my own people! That is final! Send the messengers! Any man who deserts Riatin and comes to me will be granted a pardon.” I shout and scouts go running.
I’m on the battlefield and get knocked from my horse and have to pull my daggers from my hips and face off against several men. One of my commanders, or rather, one of the ones from Andor, comes to my rescue and puts me on his horse. I was surprised when Morgase sent her First Prince of the Sword to me but I am grateful in this moment when he puts me on his horse at his own expense. And we narrowly win that day, fighting into the night and next morning. I walk amongst the crowd and heal those in need of it, regardless of the uniform they wear and thank my soldiers for their service and it is only after the adrenaline wears off that I realize that I have been wounded.
Thankfully the delegation of Aes Sedai had stayed to aid in the aftermath of the battle. “Galldrian has escaped but I already have people looking for him. He will not make it out of the country. You should tell the Amyrlin Seat that all is well.” I tell the Greens and they look skeptical. “It does not seem as if you have everything under control, Sister.” one of the older Aes Sedai observe and I shrug. “I have it as under control as the situation can be, Adelorna.” I respond levelly and she nods. “So this will not be a lingering issue?” she asks. “I have seized his family's properties, fortune, and titles, his mother serves in my household. He is named a Traitor. If he goes to my brother for aid he will not get it, Morgase will see to that.” I say simply and they all look at me. “What? I can be just as cruel as our sisters in red if I need to be.” I tell them simply and they nod.
The delegation stays for a few more days and yet again Cairhien is rebuilding after Galldrian’s war tactics. “I cannot believe the coward got away!” Gareth Bryne was mumbling angrily as they departed back for Andor. “Yes, My Lord, it is unfortunate isn’t it?” I ask simply, coming up behind them and all the men begin snapping to attention or bowing respectfully. “You must give this to my sister in law when you see her, and thank you.” I tell the man. He nods and bows. “Honored to serve, Your Majesty.” he responds. “And your actions on the battlefield shall not be forgotten Lord Bryne.” I tell him in final parting before reentering the Palace.
It’s hardly two weeks later when I bolt upright, screaming, in the middle of the night, trying to untangle myself from my bedsheets. I trip and fall onto the floor and Anvaere comes rushing in. “Light Raine!” she hisses and turns to the guards that come running. “The Queen is fine! Go back to your posts!” she barks and comes into the room further. “Here, easy, let’s get you up.” she says softly pulling me up and helping me sit down at my vanity. “Why are you like this all the sudden, even before the Tower you only ever did things with me if you didn’t feel like you had a choice.” I ask groggily. “Papa made me promise to take care of you.” Anvaere responds. “One of them was poisoning him slowly, when he started to take a turn for the worse he made me promise.” she says softly. “Said he couldn’t protect mom and the baby, said now he didn’t have the chance to protect you, but he did say that he had the chance to make sure you were going to be okay.” she adds and hands me a cup of water. “So you’ll never have to doubt me. I’ll take care of you, because if there’s one thing we have in common it was a father that loved us more than any father could love four spoiled brats.” she says with a watery smile and I smile back. “Mother again?” she asks and I nod and she rubs my back for a bit before she returns to her own bed.
I’m visiting the Riatin boy, according to Mistress Riatin his name is Alder, which is an unusual name but not overly so. He is a wonderful little boy of about 7 months old and is bright too. Sitting on the floor with him we’re playing tug of war and I’m letting him win. It’s the early hours of the morning, before dawn really, and I’ve given his nurses a few hours off. And i’m still in my dressing gown with my hair down. It takes him a few full body tugs but he pulls the blanket from me and then throws it over his head. I gasp softly and play along. “Uh-oh, Alder has gone missing!” I exclaim and he chuckles that little baby chuckle. “Oh, where did Alder go?” I ask, putting false worry in my voice and fake crying. He squeals as he pulls the blanket from his head and babbles incoherently. “Oh! Peekaboo!” I tell him and he topples himself over laughing. I pick the boy up and cradle him in my arms. I had forgotten how fun infants are. I really am regretting my original decision in the other turning to not consider them a possibility. But perhaps in this turning I can change that.
“He has hired mercenaries?” I hiss and the council looks scared. “From Andor ?” I continue and the council, along with my eyes and ears contact that brought me the information look between themselves. Quite frankly I’m pissed, not just pissed, but I’m so angry I want to break things. Aes Sedai composure be damned. “Sister, be calm, I am sure Morgase had nothing to do with it.” Alela says, trying to placate me. “No but I bet every person in this room my brother did.” Anvaere says from her spot supporting the wall. I look at her and she makes a little gesture. “Bring that damn maid in here.” I order, and no one has to guess who I mean.
…
“My Queen?” Mistress Riatin asks as soon as she’s in front of me. “Do you know who is funding your son?” I ask, my voice hollow with rage. Most don’t really notice this as I’m Aes Sedai, but when I get angry I get cold. The only person probably fully aware of just how angry I really am in Anvaere and she is being smart and staying out of my way. “I- no. Why?” she tells me and I look at her for a long moment. “Write to your son, tell him if he values the lives of his family he will turn himself in or he’ll find his family’s body parts scattered to every corner of this country.” I tell her and the color from her face vanishes. Anvaere is looking at me as if I have horns.
“I thought-” she begins but I wave her off. “Anvaere I am tired of this man being a living Blight to my reign! I have no actual intention of killing the boy, it was something I said out of anger, something Aes Sedai are perfectly capable of. As long as I believe or am certain of something when I say it I can say it.” I tell her simply and she looks at me. “Swear it to me.” she says fiercely. “I swear I will never harm a child.” I tell her and that seems to ease her worries.
Riatin shows, surprisingly, but with an army of well over 30,000 men. It’s been 5 months, the year is drawing to a close and he is demanding the release of his mother and child, I refuse, and we’re battling yet again when I notice that there are at least, at least , three male channelers in the mix. Kinslayer’s Flaming Liver. I have to channel this time so I am. We’re a week into several small skirmishes when I take three arrows, one to my shoulder, one grazes my neck barely missing an artery, and the third punches into my hip and I stumble. Gasping for air I fall over and I struggle to get to my feet. Someone steps around me as my vision goes black.
I’m in bed that’s what I’m aware of first and I groan. “Easy, easy.” I hear a familiar whisper and I groan again, reaching blindly for the source. “Don’t you dare blast me into a wall Moiraine Damodred.” a voice says sternly. “Why in the Light's name are you in my room?” I ask managing to brace myself upright and notice Elaida Sedai next to the bed. “She was the closest Aes Sedai to the battle field when you were injured.” Anvaere says. “You almost died.” she adds and I look at her before I realize that she has very noticeably been crying. “Did we get ‘em at least?” I ask her and she sighs. “Yes al’Lan Mandragoran cut him down in battle after he saw you fall. “al’Lan… The Dai Shan of Malkier? What in the, I did not request Borderlander aid!” I exclaim and she shrugs. “I guess they remembered you healing most of the Malkieri soldiers after the Battle of the Shining Walls.” she responds and my brow creases. “I- I did, didn’t I? Light I had just been moving down the line, I hadn’t even meant to heal just Borderlanders that day.” I respond. “He would like to thank you before he leaves.” she says and I nod. “Then get out so I can dress.” I tell the room and they all leave.
Light, I have to stop for a moment and look at him. He always has been a good looking man, but light bless, in armor he could tell me he’s the Dragon Reborn and I’d believe it. “al’Lan Mandragoran.” I say levelly as I come down the stairs into the entrance hall. He places a hand at my elbow as I get closer to the bottom. “Lady Moiraine Damodred, or do you prefer Sedai?” he asks politely and I smile. “Damodred for state meetings, Sedai for when it’s Tower business.” I inform him and he nods. “Thank you, for your aid, I was not even aware the Borderland nations had known of my struggles.” I say evenly and he smiles. “Yes, well thank you. And, well, we keep an eye on things to the south just like we do the north.” he responds and I smile again. “You never gave a surname in Tar Valon.” I observe and he grins. “Neither did you.” he responds and I huff a small laugh. “Let’s keep it that way.” I whisper softly and he comes to a stop. “Safe travels, and thank you again.” I tell him, pressing a coin purse into his hand. “Something for your men, I am not aware if any of the Borderlander rulers authorized this, so I figured you were not being paid.” I say before walking off, swaying my hips maybe a little too much.

Carai an Ellisande by Alsdale
excerpt from the artist page:
"In the Mountains of Mist, alone in the emptied city of Manetheren, Eldrene felt Aemon die, and her heart died with him. And where her heart had been was left only a thirst for vengeance, vengeance for her love, vengeance for her people and her land. Driven by grief she reached out to the True Source, and hurled the One Power at the Trolloc army. And there the Dreadlords died wherever they stood, whether in their secret councils or exhorting their soldiers. In the passing of a breath the Dreadlords and the generals of the Dark One's host burst into flame. Fire consumed their bodies, and terror consumed their just-victorious army. "Now they ran like beasts before a wildfire in the forest, with no thought for anything but escape. North and south they fled. Thousands drowned attempting to cross the Tarendrelle without the aid of the Dreadlords, and at the Manetherendrelle they tore down the bridges in their fright at what might be following them. Where they found people, they slew and burned, but to flee was the need that gripped them. Until, at last, no one of them remained in the lands of Manetheren. They were dispersed like dust before the whirlwind. The final vengeance came more slowly, but it came, when they were hunted down by other peoples, by other armies in other lands. None was left alive of those who did murder at Aemon's Field. "But the price was high for Manetheren. Eldrene had drawn to herself more of the One Power than any human could ever hope to wield unaided. As the enemy generals died, so did she die, and the fires that consumed her consumed the empty city of Manetheren, even the stones of it, down to the living rock of the mountains. Yet the people had been saved." ~Moiraine Damodred in Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World (Chapter 9, "Tellings of the Wheel") Queen Eldrene ay Ellan ay Carlan, the last queen of the ancient nation of Manetheren, was known as the Rose of the Sun. "Carai an Ellisande" means "For the honor of the Rose of the Sun." It was the warcry of Manetheren.
