The kids love to tease Steve and call him an old man.
Well they call him lots of things. Mom, Goober, Steeeeeeeve, Party Pooper, Uptight, even Mother on occasions where Steve is being particularly annoying to them.
But old man is new.
It starts when they find him asleep on the new couch in the Byers's home. Steve doesn't even remember falling asleep, he just remembers waking up and having seven sets of eyes peering down at him and scaring the bejeezus out of him. The Party poked fun like normal, but moved on quickly to the next thing to snark about.
Then it kept happening.
Over and over. In Eddie's trailer when they play DnD and he's waiting to drive them home. During movie nights in the Wheeler's basement. Even at his job when they come over after school finishes. But, no matter how hard they push, Steve won't tell them why he's so tired all of a sudden.
He's just sure they would never let him live it down if he admitted that the reason he kept falling asleep was because he only felt safe enough to relax if all of his kid were close. He really can only sleep these days if knows that he would hear if they were in trouble and needed him.

Part two to this
Robin comes over on one of the night Steve’s has his parents' records on. Steve is more than halfway to drunk as hell when she lets herself in with the key he gave her months ago, calling his name until she finds him alone in the living room, a finished bottle of whiskey sitting by his feet. The house is so fucking empty, and nothing is fixing the cold settling in his chest, and he needs something to save him.
She takes one look at his red flushed cheeks and slightly teary eyes, and then, before Steve can fully process what is happening, Robin is skipping across the living room floor and flinging her arms out towards him. She makes grabby hands until he reaches out, and when she has him in a tight grip, his best friend spins them wildly around the floor.
She’s singing along to the song in the worst muppet impression she’s got, and Steve tucks her close to his chest. He can’t stop laughing, and he doesn’t even bother to try and hide away his joy the way he might have with anyone else. A delirious kind of love washes over them both, the easy warm kind that floods everything it touches with light.
“You’re my soulmate Robs,” Steve slurs out, and she pulls back just far enough to shoot a perfect beaming grin at him.
“Don’t you forget it, Harrington. You’re stuck with me forever.”
Forever.
Steve smiles the rest of the night.

Ted leaves on a random Tuesday morning without a fight.
Like everything he does, it’s a quiet thing, completely devoid of passion. Karen is weeping, angrily cursing him out, and Ted can’t even spare her a passing glance. He just grabs his bags and goes, only stopping long enough to pat Holly on the head once and drop two letters for Mike and Nancy on the table in the foyer. He walks out, leaving Karen adrift in the sea with nothing to hold her down.
So she calls the only person she thinks could understand.
Joyce arrives within minutes. She makes Karen tea, puts Holly down for a nap, moves the laundry from the washer to the dryer, and even starts dinner. All the while talking to Karen about the best places to get part time work, and the lawyer she should call to fight for child support.
Karen listens, drinks her tea, and drowns in her own guilt.
“Joyce….I don’t-“ Karen cuts herself off, helplessly waving her hands around her head. She had spent years silently judging Joyce for how things ended with Lonnie, holding herself and Ted up as the “good” example. Now, Joyce is standing by her side and supporting her, when Karen never did the same.
She doesn’t Deserve this, and they both know that, and Joyce is doing it anyway, and Karen doesn’t know what to do with that kindness.
“I know who I wish I had,” Joyce said, answering the unspoken apology sitting in the air between them, “I can be that person for you,”
