Applimonsters Saturdays: No Musimons, No Life!
We come to our fourth Appmon of the week, and with that, we come to the end of the initial four characters from the anime. But today, we’re not just doing Musimon, we’re doing his whole troupe!
Tumblr media
See, just like Digimon, Appmon loves its recolors, and Musimon is the only one out of the main quartet to have any of them in the form of MCmon and Dancemon. Since Appmon get only one day out of the week, I figured it best to cover any variations under the same banner, whereas with Digimon most recolors will be handled separately.
And for the record, this kind of thing was the basis for one of Appmon’s best running gags:

Musimon - Entertainment Type | App: Music Attacks: Music Hour, Happy Playlist
A musician whose motto is "Music Changes the World". The music it creates moves with great force the hearts of all who hear it. - Translation by Wikimon.
Musimon’s inspiration is obvious: he’s a music player Appmon. iTunesmon if you will. Spotifymon. Googlemusicmon.
He’s also the only Appmon in the main four aside from Gatchmon that has absolutely no direct callbacks to an original Digimon. The unusual ears as hands are sort of broadly similar to Terriermon, but aside from that, Musimon is his own animal. He’s designed to be cool and trendy looking, and he’s sort of got a 90′s “mascot with attitude” thing going on, though the anime would play him more as a well meaning sweetheart sort of character.
For an Appmon wearing so much, his design doesn’t look overly busy, and everything fits well enough to feel natural. Even the “speaker armor” he’s wearing slots in well, and I like the added touch of the note-shaped tail and the note lines on his arms.
Musimon manages to feel “classic” without being based on a classic Digimon character, partly because a character based on playing music is such a no-brainer for a show like Appmon, and partly because of how well executed he is. Gatchmon gets...

FIVE STARMONS!
Tumblr media
MCmon - Type: Navi | App: Broadcasting Attacks: Soul Shout, Live Crisis [Jikkyo Crisis]
A talented speaker who has poured its heart and soul into commentary. Anyone who listens to its heated commentary will exhibit above-average power, even those who are otherwise feeling unmotivated.
Musimon’s first recolor is MCmon, who switches from being an Entertainment Appmon to one centered around navigation and live-event commentary. This is a pretty easy and natural way to repurpose the Musimon design, and the addition of the sunglasses and microphones give him a bit of his own identity. Appropriately enough, the big “M” on his forehead keeps from being a huge design artifact thanks to his name.
Most of the Appmon recolors would put a bit more effort in than their Digimon counterparts, either by just reusing the basic silhouette or skeleton of a design and adding completely new details, or giving them accessories in addition to new categories. MCmon falls into the latter category.

THREE STARMONS!
Tumblr media
Dancemon - Type: Game | App: Rhythm A born dancer that cannot resist dancing the moment it hears music. It dances even in battle, using its music-fists that grow stronger the more it gets into the groove.
Dancemon, meanwhile, is a Game Type Appmon, and is specifically themed around rhythm games. His design does just as much to try and set himself apart with the baseball cap and the addition of the little fangs, but I don’t think it stands on its own as well as MCmon does. With his name change being different, the “M” on his head just sort of stands out as not really fitting, and honestly they could have removed just a few lines to make it not as much as an issue.
That being said, his stock artwork at the beginning of he post showing him using his ear-arms for breakdancing is a pretty natural fit.

Baby Digimon: YukimiBotamon & Nyaromon
This week, we begin covering the Tailmon line, starting with her Baby stages, YukimiBotamon (known as SnowBotamon sometimes in the dub) and Nyaromon. These two debuted in the anime and the last Pendulum series, “Virus Busters”, which introduced Tailmon’s line to the virtual pets.
Tumblr media
This line has a reputation for jumping around between different creatures, and well, as you can see, it gets started doing that pretty early.
Tumblr media
YukimiBotamon - Slime Digimon | Attribute: None Attacks: Diamond Dust; (Dub) Bubble Blow
A Baby Digimon whose whole body is covered in fluffy, white hair. It is considered a species of Botamon, and was named "YukimiBotamon" after its white body, but the details are not clearly known. It is weak to heat, and tends to prefer cold places, so its body feels cold to the touch. Its attack technique is breathing out freezing cold air (Diamond Dust). When YukimiBotamon exhales, the moisture in the air freezes, and falls while brilliantly glittering.
- Translation by Wikimon.
YukimiBotamon is our third variation on Botamon, after Nyokimon, and this one doesn’t really excite me as much as the latter did. I mean, YukimiBotamon is cute and everything, but its just kind of a round snowball with eyes, isn’t it? I rather enjoy some of the “it’s recolored white so it’s an ice based Digimon now” but YukimiBotamon doesn’t really have much to offer, and on top of that it somehow achieves the task of being the odd ‘mon out in a line whose themes are pretty broad to begin with.
It’s plenty cute though, and it also serves as a decent base form for other Baby Digimon, at the very least. YukimiBotamon gets...

Nyaromon - Lesser Digimon | Attribute: None Attacks: Fox Tail; (Dub) Tail Whip
A tiny Digimon which has cat-like characteristics. It is always capricious, and that behavior seems to have been attached to Nyaromon as a result of its being like a "cat". Although it is sometimes frivolous due to its overflowing curiosity, it also has a lonely side. Its Special Move is puffing up its tail, making the hairs like wires and then striking the opponent (Fox Tail). However, there has never yet been an opponent observed to flinch from this attack.
- Translation by Wikimon.
Nyaromon is where we get something a bit more interesting. Tailmon is very much the cat Digimon, but it also has to pull double duty by being a Holy Beast, so a lot of the more typical cat-like characteristics are put here into Nyaromon.
Nyaromon’s more than just a waddling cat head though. It’s got a jagged sort of reptilian-looking mouth, isn’t very fluffy, and its ears are more like horns. It gives the impression it’s more of a cat-shaped creature than an outright cat, which fits considering that it’s just starting to develop these characteristics after starting as something else.
We’d get another take on a cat-like Baby form later on with Wanyamon (though that one is also a combination of other elements), and Nyaromon has a currently unnamed recolor that serves as the baby stage of Meicoomon’s line, but Nyaromon works rather well as the first attempt at making a Digimon out of that concept.

Child Digimon Mondays: Agumon
Vote for next week’s Child-Level Digimon here!
Tumblr media
Ah, Agumon. If you’re a Digimon fan and you don’t know this guy, well... first of all I’d question as to how that’s possible, and then I’d accuse you of lying to me. He’s this franchise’s most well known character. Its Pikachu, if you will. While multiple seasons have had different main Digimon, Agumon has always remained popular in one way or another, and you can count on him to show up in just almost everything game, toy, or virtual pet related in some way. His first appearance was in in the very first virtual pet, and he was there right from the start of the anime too, in the Digimon Adventure movie.
So let’s get into it, shall we?
Tumblr media
Agumon - Reptile Digimon |  Attribute: Vaccine
Attacks: Baby Flame, Sharp Claws [Surudoi Tsume], Cross Fight, Spitfire, Mach Jab, Dynamite Kick, Sharp Nail, Baby Burner; (Dub) Pepper Breath, Claw Attack, Cross Fire, Spirit Fire, Spitfire Blast
A Reptile Digimon with an appearance resembling a small dinosaur, it has grown and become able to walk on two legs. Its strength is weak as it is still in the process of growing, but it has a fearless and rather ferocious personality. Hard, sharp claws grow from both its hands and feet, and their power is displayed in battle. It also foreshadows an evolution into a great and powerful Digimon. Its Special Move is spitting a fiery breath from its mouth to attack the opponent (Baby Flame).
- Translation by Wikimon.
As you can see, Agumon does just what Botamon and Koromon did by establishing a lot of the archetypal elements of the franchise, and in this case, that element is “main character Digimon who is a dinosaur/reptile/dragon that may or may not breathe fire”. Agumon achieves this pretty handily, having the standard fire breath attack, sharp claws, fangs, and general dinosaur-ness that would be the basic mold for all the Digimon that followed him. Dinosaurs are popular with kids, especially with boys, so he makes a pretty easy choice to put in the first virtual pet and to be the main character of the first anime. He’s tough looking but also sort of cute looking, so he hits that sweet spot of “awesome and endearing”.
That being said, there’s not much about Agumon that’s distinct. What you see is what you get with him, and later Digimon in the same mold like V-mon, Guilmon, Agnimon, and Shoutmon would have more specific themes to set them apart. That being said, I can’t really knock Agumon for any of this, because... well, he’s the first Child-level Digimon people are going to see. He pretty much had to be basic and recognizable, and he succeeds at it admirably.
Like I said, Agumon shows up everywhere. Everywhere. If there’s a Digimon game, he’s in it. He’s in practically every toyline release. He has a heapton of cards, figures, EVERYTHING. If you love Agumon and want to see him outside of Digimon Adventure, well... you have a metric ton of options.
Agumon’s score is:
Tumblr media
FOUR STARMONS!
By the way, if you’re going “But that’s not Agumon’s stock profile art”, I chose it because his actual profile art is not very flattering. This CGI rendering of it from back in the day is even worse.
Tumblr media
Agumon, what happened to your jowls?!
By the way, there’s not just one Agumon. This guy hasn’t just influenced the creation of other “Protag Digimon”, he’s got a bunch of variations too. And guess what?
