America’s Got Talent: Season 15 - Quarter-Finals 2
Kenan Thompson was likable...I mean, of course, he's likable on SNL, I thought he was a good judge on “Bring the Funny” last year (yes, I watched that...I enjoyed it! I'm hoping for a second season, but it IS looking very uncertain...) Tonight, he seemed pretty quiet, but he still peppered in some jokes here and there to make Howie look like a straight man (COMEDIC straight man, not...ya know...) So I guess tonight, Howie was the Simon Cowell...
Also, major props to Heidi for her bravery in showing up even after her shirt got caught in the elevator door and torn all over, not even bothering to go to her dressing room to change it...That takes some real guts and an odd fashion sense, let me tell ya! (Or just the latter, I guess...)
Also, also, we got quite a few basic social distancing violations tonight...I guess people are less cautious now, but I still suggest we all tread carefully...
Okay, onto the acts...
11: Kameron Ross. That Lady Gaga song can make for a good belt, but Kameron isn't much of a belter, so it just came off as awkward and stiff...
10: Vincent Marcus. When I talked about his odds last week, there was another factor that I considered not long after I posted it, but didn't bother talking about then...That factor is that his audition was going to be a tough act to follow! His choices on what to do next looked very limited...And it REALLY showed tonight! I'm sorry, but repeating the premise of his audition just wasn't going to work! Now he's pigeonholed himself as that guy who impersonates rappers doing nursery rhymes...It worked great for his audition because he knew which rappers he was best at and what nursery rhymes he could cleverly incorporate their rap styles with...Here, he just seemed to throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, his impressions weren't as solid, and I couldn't even hear which nursery rhyme he was doing a lot of the time! The one thing he still has going for him though is his likable personality and enjoyable sense of humor...Plus he cut that silly pompadour!
9: Voices of Our City Choir. A good song choice for them, having the backing choir appear as a hologram was interesting, and that guy from the package sure knew how to William Shatner it up! Otherwise, this did little for me...I preferred their jazzy, Sade-sounding original song...Also, I miss that slam poet old lady, she was cool!
8: The Shape. The mysterious, previously unseen act with the equally mysterious name has finally revealed themselves! And they were...fun, I guess...Overall, it was another standard dance group, though they do get some points for the costumes (and the clever use of face masks).
7: Jonathan Goodwin. You know, I'm not usually the most keen observer, but even I could tell that he was basically fidgeting with the key to stall for maximum suspense...I guess turning himself into the Human Torch was an interesting spectacle, but this escape doesn't measure up to, say, Spencer Horsman...I give him props for the very real danger, but this just wasn't at the level of his JC performance...
6: Kelvin Dukes. I'd say going for upbeat and fun was the right decision for Kelvin...His singing isn't the greatest I've heard, but he does have a very likable personality that greatly benefits from the Bruno Mars approach. (I mean, he had a patch on his jacket that said “Mars”, so that should tell you plenty...) Also, I guess it serves as a nice tribute to that chick from “Glee” who was recently killed...
5: BONAVEGA. So that's what happens when Billy Idol has a lovechild with Dee Snider! He really didn't need to cover The Weeknd...Sure, that song is one of the most delightfully 80s throwbacks I've heard, but nothing beats his original songs and mad guitar skills! All said, who does he think he's kidding when he says he's bringing back the 80s!? I'd say works like “Ready Player One” and everything Finn Wolfhard stars in have been doing that just fine...While he may be a guaranteed out tomorrow, I would still love to see one last set from him as a wildcard!
4: Daneliya Tuleshova. I gotta hand it to this girl, she seems to know what she's doing! I've been feeling since the beginning that she was holding back in her audition, so that she could keep getting better with each round...She has some articulation issues, but otherwise her range is amazing! While I haven't quite joined the hundreds on the Daneliya hype train yet, I am looking forward to seeing how she does as the game progresses...She might even outlast Roberta!
3: Alexis Brownley & The Puppy Pals. There's just something I love about these precious youngsters having a fun time with their dogs set to upbeat music with these fun, colorful sets! I loved the film studio themed set and props, and we saw a few new and/or impressive tricks as well! I'm tellin' ya, little girls seem to make the best dog trainers!
2: BAD Salsa. Ever since V.Unbeatable, I have been acquiring a taste for some good ol’ Bollywood dance music! And THESE TWO need to star in a Bollywood movie together! I don't really have much to add...America may have talent, but India's Got Moves!
1: Spyros Bros. If I was an actual judge on the show right now, I would be bragging on and on about picking a good Golden Buzzer! They stepped up the tricks big time, and picked the most amazing set ever! (All that was missing was if they turned into Itchy and Scratchy and brutally assaulted each other with their giant yo-yos!) I just hope the whole pre-recorded aspect doesn't hurt their chances, because I really do think they should be in the finals!
I still had mixed opinions for quite a few acts, but I would say it was overall a step up from last week...
My Votes: Unfortunately, due to the hour-long DNC interruption (at least where I live), and my tendency to wait until the end of the show to vote, I missed my chance to vote on my TV...But I still used both my AGT app and the NBC website to throw some votes toward BAD, Spyros and Jonathan (yes, I was a bit disappointed with his performance, but I would still love to see what he does next time...)
Result Predictions: I think Daneliya and VoOCC are pretty much guaranteed for the Top 3...As for the other one, we COULD continue the tendency of all the singers making it through (as I know that even with being placed early in the line-up, getting a lukewarm reception and having an hour-long break to help voters forget about him, Kameron won't go that easily...But maybe it will at least compromise his votes...) Otherwise, I would LIKE to believe that it will go to BAD or Spyros...The latter is who I primarily hope gets it, but I'm still not entirely sure if enough was done (namely by the judges and producers) to assure that...This game can be very unfair with who gets to be the most popular...
I guess I'll do something I don't normally do, and make a ranking prediction like FrankDoc does...It will be a fair bit wishful...
11: BONAVEGA
10: Vincent Marcus
9: The Shape
8: Jonathan Goodwin
7: Kelvin Dukes
6: Kameron Ross
5: Alexis Brownley & The Puppy Pals
4: BAD Salsa
3: Spyros Bros
2: Voices of Our City Choir
1: Daneliya Tuleshova
See you tomorrow when the REAL Michael Myers dance group takes the stage, along with our favorite ventriloquism prodigy...

Liz Horsman—who I wrote ‘Miss You’ and ‘So Far so Good’ with—and I wanted to write a letter to happiness. It was her idea, actually. We only had the ‘Dear happy/ please leave a light on’ line for ages. It was like a postcard. While on tour in the US a few ago I heard this Brandi Carlisle tune on the radio and thought perhaps it could go in that direction. I tried a bunch of things and everything left is sounding very power rock and dated. I then had a session in with Jamie Hartmann at the end of the tour. I always like to go into a writing session with something, so I took this in and we eventually managed to finish it after some last production work by Nick [Atkinson] and Edd [Holloway] and then Mike Spencer who is a producer I have worked with many times. It was the last song I finished for the album. I wanted that very last part of the song to really take off and then come down so stark to sum up the album. It was important to me that the album ended with ‘Dear Happy’, and that the chorus is the very last thing you hear.
Gabrielle Aplin on her song Dear Happy

B I O G R A P H Y
Gabrielle Aplin is an independent singer-songwriter from Sutton Benger, Wiltshire, England where she spent most of her teenage years. She was born on October 10, 1992 and she is the elder of two children. Aplin’s tastes were shaped by her family’s music taste. Her music was influenced by listening Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, Leonard Cohen and Karen Carpenter during her childhood. When she was 11 years old, her parents bought her first guitar. Gabrielle started writing poems and short stories then realise she could put music to those words. She wrote her first song called ‘Ghosts’ at the age 14. Her mother played classical piano so there always were a piano in her house and Aplin taught herself to play.
Tumblr media
Gabrielle attended Sheldon school in Chippenham. After that, she did a music BTEC at the City of Bath College participating in the college’s in-house label BA1 Records. While she was in college, a friend of her, recorded and uploaded a video of her doing a cover of ‘My Heart’ by Paramore. In 2008, Gabrielle started uploading covers as well as original songs regularly on her YouTube channel which made her gained a large online following. In 2010, she founded an independent record label called Never Fade Records to release her first EP earning her an invitation to performed at her local BBC radio station. Gabrielle’s appearance on BBC Wiltshire was heard by Radio One, who invited her to perform at Maida Vale studios as part of BBC Introducing. The sessions gave Gabrielle yet more exposure and shortly after the release of her third EP, Home. At the age 17, she quit sixth form, left Bath and moved to London to pursue her dream.
Tumblr media
In 2012, Aplin signed with Parlophone records and she began recording her debut album, English Rain. Gabrielle gained mainstream attention when she was selected to record the soundtrack for a John Lewis television commercial with a cover of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”, which charted at number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in December 2012. Her debut album English Rain was released in May 2013 and peaked at number two on the UK album chart. English Rain has since been certified Gold in the UK, selling over 100,000 copies. On its release, English Rain charted at number two on both the UK album charts, selling over 35,000 copies. It reached number 11 in Ireland, number 10 in Australia and number 39 in New Zealand. English Rain went on to gain international success and gave Aplin two Australian number ones.
Tumblr media
In 2013, Gabrielle announced that her record label, Never Fade Records is now open to represent other musicians since Parlophone didn’t allow her use her label’s royalties on her music. Her first signings were Welsh folk-jazz singer Hannah Grace and indie folk artist Saint Raymond. Never Fade Records’ first release since Home EP in 2012, was Saint Raymond’s Escapade EP, released on 22 April 2013. Between 2012-2013, Aplin has toured with Gotye, Ed Sheeran and John Mayer, performed at festivals including Glastonbury, T in the Park, and iTunes, among others, and headlined a sold out UK run. In 2014, Gabrielle released her English Rain EP in the United States. The EP features five songs from her Gold-selling debut album. In addition to “The Power of Love”, which was featured in promos for ABC’s new hit series “Resurrection”, the EP aslo features an exclusive new track- a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You”.
Tumblr media
In May 2015, Aplin announced her second studio album, Light Up The Dark. The album announcement also featured the release of the title track’s music video. Written by Gabrielle with long time writing partner Luke Potashnich, ‘Light Up The Dark’ inmediately telegraphs Aplin’s fresh Feist-meets-Cat Power style. Her guitar and piano skills were heightened and spendind most of her time with other musicians added a new dimension to her songwriting. Also vital was her experimentations with different microphones, vintage equipment and old synths. Light Up The Dark sound was a inspired combination of Joni Mitchell and the production on Feist’s ‘The Reminder’.
Tumblr media
Later in 2015, it was revealed Aplin had signed a modelling deal with Storm but four months later, she moved to Storm’s rival modelling agency, Select. In 2016, Gabrielle began to gain popularity in Brazil when her song Home was used in the popular soap opera Totalmente Demais. Aplin visited Brazil in May 2016 to make a cameo appearance in the final episode of the soap opera. Following her appearance and a live performance on Domingão do Faustão. Home reached number 1 on the Brazilian iTunes chart, marking  Aplin’s fourth number 1 single worldwide.
Tumblr media
On November 9th 2016, Aplin released Miss You. The song has been described as a departure from her previously guitar-driven sound on Light Up The Dark and the production as being much less ‘bare bones’ than her previous efforts. The song is the first single from Aplin’s Miss You EP. In February 2017, Aplin parted ways with Parlophone Records to focus on releasing material via her own independent record label, Never Fade Records. The following year, Aplin joined AWAL (Artists Without A Label) Recordings alongside her record label to help boost the artists she signed as well as her own projects. On October 6th 2017, Gabrielle releases another EP called Avalon. The first single from the EP, “Waking Up Slow,” is a track featuring more electronic sounds than her previous albums and EPs, which according to Gabrielle, is a song all about “appreciating life as it is and focusing on the positives and deciding to just be.”
Tumblr media
On December 4th 2018, Aplin released a collaborative Christmas EP with her colleague and friend, Hannah Grace. The EP inniatially included three cover tracks and one original song called "December" but it was re-released almost a year later featuring two additional covers. On January 17 2020, Gabrielle released her third studio album after five years since her last one, called "Dear Happy". Since the pandemic started and the promotion for her album was suspended, she has been collaborating with different artists such as Kodaline, The Coronas and Anna Straker to name a few. In March 2020, Aplin joined LARKS, a songwriting and production collective created by Liz Horsman, where she works with Liz, Mike Spencer, Andrea Rocha and Anna Straker. Currently, Gabrielle is working on recording her fourth studio album at Lark's Tongue Studios and Real World Studios.

‘AGT: The Champions’ Recap: Simon Cowell Steals Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer — Watch
Recap
January 13, 2020 10: 08PM EST
The competition is heating up on ‘AGT: The Champions’ and Simon Cowell was so impressed with one act that he stole Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer for himself during the Jan. 13 episode.
AGT: The Champions season 2 is moving on to week 2, which means that new acts hit the stage. The first performer of the night is 2011 Philippines Got Talent winner Marcelito Pomoy. Before his performance, he admits he’s a bit nervous. However, he doesn’t sound like it when he starts to sing. He effortlessly switches between tenor and soprano voices. “You are a beautiful, wonderful singer,” Howie Mandel says. In the middle of the judges’ comments, the crowd gives Marcelito a standing ovation. Simon Cowell gives him a 10 out of 10. While everyone tries to convince Howie to give Marcelito the Golden Buzzer, he decides against it.
Oz Pearlman, the mentalist came in third place during AGT season 10, returns with another jaw-dropping performance. He brings his whole act full circle. He leaves the judges and the audience in awe. “You really are the real Wizard of Oz,” Heidi Klum declares. Next up is Boogie Storm, the act that came in third place on Britain’s Got Talent. Their performance is fun and energetic, especially in those Stormtrooper outfits. This group was Simon’s Golden Buzzer on Britain’s Got Talent so he’s got a soft spot for them. Howie isn’t going to give the group his Golden Buzzer, though.
But Simon shocks everyone by stealing Howie’s Golden Buzzer and giving it to Boogie Storm! The contestants who still have to perform are stunned. Simon raves that Boogie Storm is one of the “most original acts we’ve ever had.”
Ben Blaque is ready for a comeback. The danger act made it to the semi-finals of BGT in 2016 but can’t forget when his act went wrong. He wants to redeem himself for that. Ben reveals that he’s going to try his crossbow roulette act again with Alesha Dixon. The act doesn’t get off to the best start since Ben forgets the safety on the crossbows. Alesha begins pulling the levers but, eventually, all four red buzzers are hit, which means Ben must stop the performance. Simon believes AGT would have had its “first death” if Ben didn’t stop. Ben’s road to redemption comes to a screeching halt.
Musical group Collabro wants to make it big in America. The group won Britain’s Got Talent in 2014, so this is the logical next step. Collabro performs “Shallow” and it’s a pretty solid performance. Alesha admits she felt like they’ve performed other songs better. While Heidi says they’re “very good singers,” Simon declares the performance “wimpy.”
Ryan Niemiller is back! The comedian came in third place during AGT season 14. He returns to the stage with a handful of hilarious jokes. Simon tells Ryan that he was “better tonight” than he was on the main show. Puddles Pity Party performs Foreigner’s “I Want To Know What Love Is.” There’s no denying that Puddles has a great voice. “You are a champion,” Howie says. Alesha says she’s not sure if this act is good enough to win.
Magician and Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist Marc Spellman takes the stage to wow every single person in the room. He pulls off the ultimate surprise when AGT and AGT: The Champions winner Shin Lim shows up! Everyone is shook. “This would have been my Golden Buzzer,” Howie reveals. Luke Islam made it to the semi-finals of AGT season 14 but wants to become a champion. He performs a powerful rendition of Celine Dion’s “Ashes.” Simon didn’t care for the song, but Heidi and Howie both loved the performance.
Spencer Horsman is the final performance of the night. The escape artist from AGT season 7 has never been afraid to take a risk but this performance will be his biggest one yet. For his act, he’s going to be locked underwater and hoisted 30 feet in the air. He’s got 2 minutes to free himself, but there’s a catch. Not only does Spencer have to get out of the locks, but he also has to reach up to the top and attach the safety harness before the bottom of the box drops and he falls! Despite everything, Spencer manages to do all of those things. It’s truly a jaw-dropping act.
Marcelito Pomoy and Marc Spellman are going to the semi-finals. The judges have to decide between Ryan Niemiller, Spencer Horsman, and Luke Islam. Simon, Alesha, and Heidi pick Ryan so he’s headed to the semi-finals!

America’s Got Talent: Champions 2 - Preliminaries 2
10: Ben Blaque. Things could not have gone more wrong! I really wanted him to redeem himself as intended, but everything just fell apart! It's a shame, because while I may not have watched him on BGT, I do remember when he competed on AGT, and he showed quite a bit of promise! Maybe it was just a curse when he took on the “lovechild of Criss Angel and Skrillex” look...
9: Collabro. The sad thing is, I could tell these guys were talented, and the song can be great when performed by the right vocalists...Let's just say, putting two good things together is not always a good idea...Also, does the Joker know they raided his wardrobe?
8: Puddles Pity Party. I was really looking forward to seeing Puddles again, but this just wasn't his best set...He played it safe with the range, and seemed to only win over (some of) the judges by showing pictures of their dogs...I guess the sad clown is left crying once more, but I and plenty of others still love him!
7: Boogie Storm. While I've never watched BGT, I have watched these guys' performances on Youtube before, and it put a big grin on my face! They may not be the best dancers ever, but the AMOUNT of dance moves they have, especially under those costumes, made them a real joy to watch! It was amazing to see how different Simon seems to be over in Britain, and that he's willing to give a Golden Buzzer to an act like this...And it made me even happier to read the spoilers ahead of time that he was going to give it to them again for Champions! ...And yet something troubles me...First of all, this isn't the best performance we've seen from this group...But even moreso, now that I see that he stole the GB of the night from Howie just to send these guys through...REALLY annoys me! A lot of people on Youtube are pissed that these guys got the Golden Buzzer instead of certain other acts, but I don't think anyone would have complained if it wasn't for Simon going all in on “It's MY show! I can do what I want!” I still look forward to seeing these guys in the Finals...But seriously: Bad show, Simon! You should be ashamed of yourself! I am now convinced that whatever drama was going on between him and the female judges from last season was his fault! If this was anyone else, they would have been fired, and all I can do now is hope that somebody will pull some strings so that it will happen to him!
6: Luke Islam. This kid has clearly had some vocal training since we last saw him, since he is now very effective in projecting his voice! Maybe the song choice wasn't the best way to display that, but he's still definitely getting better with his overall talent!
5: Ryan Niemiller. I WOULD agree with the judges that this was his funniest set...There were some really solid jokes and all...But this is another stand-up set that was just too CRIMINALLY short! I still look forward to seeing him again, but seriously! Comedians need more time, AGT!
4: Spencer Horsman. These are the best kinds of escape tricks, the ones where not only is the danger real, but you can tell that only a REAL master escape artist and masochist would pull off such a stunt! Now hopefully this guy saw a doctor after all that to deal with that stapled-up scalp! He's still in his prime, so hopefully he chickity-checks himself before he wrecks himself!
3: Marcelito Pomoy. I guess all he was missing was Adaline Bates' costume! Either way, very impressive and interesting!
2: Oz Pearlman. Wait...I have Oz Pearlman...IN SECOND!? IT'S THE END TIMES!!! No, but seriously, maybe it's because I've learned to appreciate solid mentalist tricks as of late, but Oz has GREATLY improved for me since last time I saw him! I was able to appreciate the scale of the trick he went for, as well as the illusion that went into it! I guess it helps when instead of wondering, “WHAT WITCHCRAFT IS THIS!?”, you ask, “What little details went into making this trick possible?” And that's FAR more interesting than taking the Simon Cowell approach of just calling them wizards! I guess it helps that I'm a LOT more generous to mentalists than I used to be, but I'm genuinely convinced that Oz learned how to step it up and do it right! Good news: I no longer hate him!
1: Marc Spelmann. Well, he shares the same last name as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, so maybe this one really IS a wizard...(Oh wait, her name has two L's and one N...Never mind...) I actually had a hard time picking between this guy and Oz, as the other guy seemed to have a better illusion...But at the same time, it did take him a little time to get to the point, whereas this guy seemed to breeze right through it! Also, the presentation was better! Also-also, Shin Lim! It's pretty easy to figure out when the two switch, but it can still throw you off the first time you watch it! (Did I mention Shin Lim?)
So I'm on the fence with this show...On one hand, there were a few more exciting acts, but on the other, quite a few things went pret-ty wrong, from Ben Blaque suffering from Murphy's law, to Puddles not rising to the challenge, and don't even get me started on Simon's entitled Stormtrooper lust!
Nonetheless, I still look forward to next week! I won't bother with my “hype list” since I only know four of the acts performing next week, but let's just say two favorites from last season make their return (one of them among my favorite acts of all time in this series), as well as possibly the most underrated winner in the show's history...
See you then...

Chapter 1
Dear Diary, This is the very first entry of my newly started fantasy diary/journal series. Let me start by introducing myself first. My name is Kim and I am an aspiring magician and escape artist. Magicians and Escape Artists such as Houdini, Landon Swank, Spencer Horsman, Lady Houdini, James More, Cris Angel, David Copperfield, Jonathan Goodwin, Andrew Basso, and etc. have always inspired me. But, don’t get me started with Andrew Basso, I been an obsessed fan of him since I discovered him. Anyways, I always been a geek, I’m constantly spending my free time studying magic or getting buried in books, tv shows, and movies. Among the numerous series I’m into, I would never expect to relate to a series such as the 50 shades series. After all, a girl can only dream about such desires right? Well, I was wrong about that. I never knew such fantasies can become a reality. It all started with a single piece of research paper. As an English major, my final assignment before graduation is to submit an original research paper. Since magic have always been my interest since a young age, I chose to do my final research paper on Escapology, a branch of magic that always had my best interest. I reached out to numerous magicians and escape artists for my research paper and I was beyond thrilled that Andrew Basso agreed to be interviewed. I just can’t contain my excitement. Anyways, that is all as of right now, I will be back to update after my interview with the amazing escapologist. With Best Interests, Kimberly Halstead
