Physical Appearances: Each Gemflower has their corresponding flower blooming on their head, as well as somewhere on their body with their gemstone inside it. Iris has very light purple skin, and her flower is on his chest, having her gemstone inside it. She wears a blue sleeveless shirt with an iridescent shirt and pants underneath it. Lotus has pink skin and two coral pink beads on either side of her head. Her flower gemstone is located on the left side of the neck of her dress, which has a very light pink top that's almost white, a coral pink belting, and a blue skirt with green layers. Her dress's skirt has pink hints in the layers, and the top has a shoulder pad on one side. Magnolia's skin is silver, and on either side of his head, there are silver beads. His flower gemstone is on his chest, and he wears a white and yellow dress with light yellow stockings.
Marigold has mango skin, her gemstone is close to her neck, and she wears gold yellow clothes and two beads on each side of her head. Orchid has light purple skin, heart-shaped beads and has his orchid amethyst on his chest, wearing magenta pants and a top with light purple sleeves. Tiger Lily's skin is orange, his clothes are brown and resemble a pirate's clothing, and his flower is positioned on his right hip. Around his waist is a sash with tiger stripes on it. Wisteria also has light purple skin and a similar outfit to Magnolia's, wearing a purple dress with mauve stockings. Snapdragon's skin is red, and her outfit consists of a shirt and pants with a green collar, resembling a strawberry. Her flower is located on her navel, as is Hellebore's. Hellebore has red violet skin and wears four maroon beads on the sides of his head. He also wears a black leotard with gray leggings. Chrysanthemum has green skin and wears a green shirt with a matching green skirt and pants beneath it. His peridot chrysanthemum is on his chest.
Personalities: All ten of these flower rocks are inseparable; it feels like they can't survive if they aren't working together. They all have similar opinions and similar attitudes to each other, but each of them also have their own differing personality traits.
Iris is a social butterfly and a good communicator, and Lotus is calm and has a strong sense of peace of mind. Iris and Lotus are the messengers and leaders to the Petalstones. Magnolia is quite fatherly and is very wise in a similar way to Piano. Marigold is content and environmental, using what's around her to get ideas. Orchid is very sensitive and much more reactive to his surroundings, and he's also very outgoing.
Tiger Lily is compassionate, strong-willed and brave with a dash of strong optimism. Sometimes, he behaves like a cat. Wisteria is peaceful and social. She's willing to meet anyone and is usually the first one of them who speaks. Snapdragon is a bit shy and quiet, but she's intelligent, gracious and a fast learner. Hellebore is listless, indifferent, and laid-back, but he's also very smart, level-headed and encouraging. Chrysanthemum is cheerful, joyful, energetic, defensive and in a constant state of harmony. One of the things they have in common is that they all love to get creative, and they show it in their music.
Abilities: Iris and Lotus are the lead singers of the band; Lotus can also play the zither, and Iris plays the xylophone. Magnolia plays the piano, keyboard and also the calliope. Marigold can play the violin, the viola and the cello. Orchid plays the upright bass and the bass guitar, plus the french horn. Tiger Lily plays both electric and acoustic guitar; he also plays the tin whistle and hurdy gurdy. Wisteria plays the cowbell, the cornet, and also the koto. Snapdragon provides additional sound effects to the group's music, and she can also play the melodica and the accordion. Hellebore is the drummer for the band, being able to play all kinds of drums. Chrysanthemum can play the tambourine and the recorder. He often wears jingling bracelets when performing.
The ten of them have daily group study sessions where they study Japanese and listen to songs in Japanese as well. Some of them have other talents. As examples, Marigold is an artist, Magnolia is good at sewing, Tiger Lily is a creative storyteller and Snapdragon works with technology very well.
----
Trivia
The Petalstones are meant to reference BABYMETAL, who did the theme song for Unikitty. This is why Iris and Lotus sound like Su-Metal and Moa-Metal respectively.
Jezabat got help from her friend @literallyzooble for the band’s Japanese translation. They are also the reason why she decided to make the Petalstones a J-rock band besides BABYMETAL.
Coincidentally, The Petalstones is also the name of an alternative rock band.
The Petalstones prefer to be called by the names of their flowers.
The ten of them consider themselves to be like a family.
Magnolia is the Petalstone with the lowest range. Because of this, he usually sings the bass lines for their songs.
Wisteria is the one with the highest range, and she is the only Petalstone who can hit whistle notes. She doesn’t do it often, though.
If their gemstone cracks, things will get unstable for them and their flower, and if it's shattered, their flower will shrivel up and they'll die. There is a way to repair a cracked gemstone in the instance of one; the gem will magically heal itself as long as whoever's gem is cracked is exposed to sunlight.
Snapdragon is the only Petalstone who was not built from pieces that sprouted from the earth. (Botania and Marevi don't have a stork deliver pieces like in the Unikingdom.)
She was created in a lab by Dr. Fox's aunt. Before she married her uncle Rover, Daisy's last name was Beryl.
Unikitty and Puppycorn have seen the band in concert once before as a fun sibling's day out. To this day, they're huge fans. They introduced the band to the rest of the Unigang.
The Petalstones' fanbase is called the Earth Children.

Saturday Morning Coffee
Good morning from Charlottesville, Virginia! ☕️
Tumblr media
I had to set aside my upgrade of some of the networking code changes I wanted to make on the project I’m on at work. That’s fine. I knew it would be a bit of a process to update this code and to be honest it may be a fools errand. But I still believe it would make the code more maintainable and eliminate two third party dependencies. But you have to be ready to sideline work like this when more pressing work shows up.
Here we go. I hope you enjoy the links this week.

Microsoft has just announced a new Surface Pro, which is part of the new wave of Copilot Plus PCs. The new Pro, which is technically the “11th edition,” starts at $999, comes in four colors, and is powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X processors.
I don’t care about the AI stuff Microsoft announced and hopefully folks can turn it off because it sounds terrible but I do like seeing them ship new hardware with vastly improved performance. 👍🏼
Fingers crossed this one is a winner. 🤞🏼

There is nothing unusual about the outside of these disks, but there is something unique about the data that is stored on them, something that Sierra On-Line would have been totally unaware of and certainly wouldn’t have wanted them to include.
I love history stories like this! Back in my Visio days I was what we call a Configuration Engineer. I was in charge of our installer code and creating the final gold master disks — 720KB and 1.44MB — and CD, so I’m familiar with this process. I didn’t, however, have an imaging machine. We sent the masters out to a disk duplication service to mass produce them and put them in boxes with documentation.
Anywho, I never made a mistake like that, and this mistake was not the worst you could make. Hey, at least the code wasn’t there in plain text. You actually had to check space the OS has marked as free to find it. Remember kids, do a destructive format or a DoD wipe of space you’d like to be empty.
Kazuaki Nagata • The Japan Times
In a bid to break Apple and Google’s dominance of the smartphone app ecosystem, the Japanese government is looking to change rules on app markets and payments to stimulate competition.
Things are getting interesting for Apple and Google. At what point does Apple decide on a single strategy for managing the availability of third-party stores and installation of software outside of any store?
I can’t see Japan going for Apple’s “Core Technology Fee” but we’ll see as this moves forward.

Pixar Lays Off 175 Employees, 14 Percent of Staff, Shocking No One Who’s Tried Watching Their Recent Films
Harsh take from Gruber. The last Pixar Movie I saw was Onward and I liked it.
I don’t know if it’s that their movies are bad now. Maybe the magic has just worn off?

This is a head scratcher. If LLMs are being trained on all of the Internet then we’re kind of screwed.

Armitage didn’t even know his sword had been stolen until Peter Jackson brought it to his attention. He’d been equally surprised to have Orcrist join his possessions in the first place.
All I could think while reading this is how amazing it would be to have this sword hung above my fireplace. 🗡️
It’s a fun little story.

This post is a look inside how (a small part of) SwiftUI works. I’m mainly writing this as part of my extended memory, so that I can go back to it and read about how it works.
This is the kind of post I need as a developer. Having experienced looks at part of the language you use daily is always helpful.
Swift continues to expand as a programming language and I wish the pace would slow a bit. I’m so far behind the curve it’s frightening. That’s what happens when you spend a year-and-a-half as a Director. Those dev skill wilt a bit and you get really far behind.
The good thing is nobody knows, or cares, if you’re using the latest and creates language features or frameworks. What they want is quality software.
I made note earlier this week that Tapbots beautifully designed and implemented Ivory app is written in Objective-C. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
(I reached out to Tapbots to see if that was still true. I didn’t receive a reply.)
Rachel Treisman • NPR
Elvis Presley’s granddaughter is suing to stop the planned foreclosure sale of his compound Graceland, alleging that the company involved not only forged documents, but doesn’t actually exist.
I really hope they’re able to get this sorted out in favor of Elvis’ estate. It seems Lisa Marie may have gone around the estate to get a loan from a dodgy entity that doesn’t really exist. I’ll keep an eye on this one.
Rich Turner • Microsoft Command Line
We are excited to announce the open-sourcing of Microsoft GW-BASIC on GitHub!
I’ve share my love for BASIC and it’s nice to see Microsoft release this code to the general public.
Hey, can you release the grammar for Microsoft Professional Basic v6.x? I’d like to have that for reasons. 😃
Sean Hollister • The Verge
At Build, Microsoft now says it’s adding native version control to File Explorer by integrating systems like Git, letting you see new changes and comments directly from the app.
They’re basically Sherlocking some small plug-in developers with these features. It was inevitable. I used an extension to File Explorer in the mid-2000’s with Subversion that did this very thing. It now does it for git.
Jamelle Bouie • The New York Times
All of this brings us to the most recent controversy surrounding the Supreme Court justice Samuel A. Alito. Not long after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, my colleague Jodi Kantor reported last week, someone in the Alito household flew an inverted American flag in the front yard. The upside-down flag, a sign of naval distress, was one of the preferred symbols of the movement to “stop the steal” — a statement of solidarity with those who disbelieved the results of the 2020 presidential election and fought to return Trump to office against the rule of law and the verdict of the Constitution.
Now we know. Some of the Supreme Court justices are in bed with American Oligarchs and the MAGA movement. They need to be dismissed from the bench.
For a Supreme to openly show support for the overthrow of our country is pathetic and he needs to be held accountable.

The rise in high-quality, bandwidth-intensive data and applications has increased the need for HBS. Game-casting, the common use case where a mobile phone or handheld is used to cast content to a smart TV, is one where HBS would be quite valuable. When a gamer uses HBS to game-cast, they may play on a bigger screen with Qualcomm fastconnectivity instead of experiencing latency from the crowded 2.4GHz band or a delay from switching between the 5GHz and 6GHz bands.
Close enough for a longer show The integration of HBS and a wide range of proximity technologies, including as Wi-Fi ranging, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and Ultra Wideband (UWB), elevates seamless experiences with FastConnect 7900. By incorporating proximity technologies, devices may sense other devices in their immediate vicinity and interact with them more naturally all without the user having to take active control.
The expanded display use case is one illustration of how proximity technologies and HBS work in perfect harmony with one another. A laptop user can use a tablet as an additional screen, as demonstrated above. Here, UWB is used to identify the tablet’s presence as well as its orientation, while HBS uses fast 5GHz or 6GHz connections to link the laptop, tablet, and access point all at once.
Superior sound quality with XPAN Audio is a further developing use case where proximity and HBS together can show to be revolutionary. Because many of the major streaming providers support lossless audio, there is an increasing demand for high-quality lossless music. Audiophiles can benefit from Expanded Personal Area Network (XPAN) technology in their headphones or earbuds with our recently announced Qualcomm S7 Pro Gen 1 Sound Platform.
This innovative technology combines XPAN and micro-powered Wi-Fi to provide a more reliable connection with reduced latency, increased throughput, and increased coverage. All connections are in the high-speed bands when HBS is used, guaranteeing that the listener receives the highest-quality audio possible from the streaming services they pay for.

Meet Qualcomm's Newest Chip, the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3
Tumblr media
While most flagship-tier smartphones today run on Qualcomm's ultra-powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the company recently announced the arrival of a somewhat similarly-powerful chipset, albeit meant for upper-midrange smartphones, also known as "flagship killer" devices - enter the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, which packs a lot of the same features as its "regular" 8 Gen 3 sibling, while cutting down on costs. Chris Patrick, Senior Vice president and General Manager of Mobile Handsets at Qualcomm states: “With capabilities including on-device generative AI and advanced photography features, Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is designed to enhance user experiences, fostering creativity and productivity in their daily lives... We’re elated to introduce the latest addition to our premium Snapdragon 8-series, our most premium mobile offering, bringing a host of exceptional specially selected capabilities to more consumers.” Designed on a on a 4 nm process with a 1+4+3 core configuration, Qualcomm says that the 8s Gen 3 is capable of supporting premium-tier features such as on-device generative AI features, an always-sensing ISP, hyper-realistic mobile gaming, breakthrough connectivity, as well as lossless high-definition sound. The new SoC also supports a broad array of AI models including popular large language models (LLM) such as Baichuan-7B, Llama 2, Gemini Nano and Zhipu ChatGLM. Given that generative AI has been a major focus for most OEMs in the past couple of years, it's not exactly surprising to see Qualcomm bring such features to a slightly lower-tier chip, although it's a much-welcome add-on and does slow down device obsoletion. As far as hardware is concerned, the new chip consists of a Prime ARM Cortex X4 which is clocked at 3.0 GHz, and works in tandem with four Performance cores at 2.8 GHz, as well as three Efficiency cores at 2.0 GHz. The debut of the 8s Gen 3 follows the unveiling of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which was announced back in October during Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit. With that being said, we can expect to see the 8s Gen 3 in action in upcoming devices from several partner manufacturers including Honor, iQOO, realme, Redmi and Xiaomi; Qualcomm notes that the first device running the 8s Gen 3 will be announced this March. William Lu, Partner and President of Xiaomi Corporation comments: “We're thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies to introduce the first device powered by Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 – coming soon... This new mobile platform will allow us to provide our customers with a personalized premium experience, all thanks to generative AI.” Read the full article

OnePlus 12 Full Specification and Price
OnePlus 12 is by all means the best OnePlus smartphone produced by the brand. You may argue that the OnePlus Open foldable smartphone is a more premium device, and we’d agree to that to some extent, but that’s in a very high-level of price category and comes with an older chipset and a lesser screen resolution. Now, let’s get back to our OnePlus 12 here. We are presented with a fresh, impressive-looking and gorgeous design. The back camera module, the colors, looks upgraded. It’s something you can be proud of when holding in your hand. It is offering IP65 water resistance, Gorilla Glass protection on both sides and an aluminum frame. However, it is more on the thicker and heavier side.
The 6.82” huge LTPO AMOLED screen with 1440 x 3168 pixels, HDR10+ and 4500 nits peak brightness is one of the best you can find upon its release. The size is a huge favor for an immersive view and the high resolution QHD+ quality will enhance your experience. In the camera section, we are getting a 50+64+48 MP setup. The main 50MP camera packs a high-end Sony’s dual-layer stacked Lytia 808 sensor. The 64MP periscope telephoto lens has 3x optical or 120x digital zoom with OIS as well. Even the 48 MP ultrawide lens has a powerful Sony IMX581 sensor. There is Hasselblad color calibration and up to 8K video recording with Dolby Vision feature. The 32 MP selfie camera has up to 4K recording. These are not the best cameras in the industry, but you are getting a decent deal.
The 5400 mAh battery is the biggest in any OnePlus smartphone till now. Its 100W charger takes about 26 minutes for a full charge. You’ll also get a 50W wireless charging facility. The latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset is powering the device with 12, 16 and 24 GB RAM options. Its memory option is up to 1 TB with fast UFS 4.0 technology. The latest Android 14 version is added with OxygenOS for the international variant and ColorOS for the Chinese variant. Graphics-intensive and heavy performance tasks and gaming should not face any interruption at all, even for long-term utilization. This phone will be well-usable at least till 2027-2028. There should not be any heating issue in this gadget. OnePlus 12 sound quality is also pleasing.

Look at the progress of the domestic VR/AR industry from PICO and Xiaomi
Tumblr media
"After Apple enters the market, we can look forward to the popularity of VR equipment." An industry insider expressed such emotion.
In China, there is also a VR player that can serve as an industry benchmark along with Oculus, which was acquired by Facebook. It is HE Tube PICO, which was acquired by ByteDance in 2021.
On April 19 this year, PICO officially launched the all-in-one VR machine PICO4 Pro. PICO's latest product has been optimized in many aspects such as sensors, chips, and optical modules, but overall, it has not made breakthrough progress.
First of all, the chip is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip with a 7nm process. The single-core and multi-core performance are improved by 20% and 30% respectively compared with the previous generation product. Secondly, in terms of sensors, the new product has a new RGB VST camera. It uses a 16-megapixel Sony sensor to realize the color perspective function.
In terms of acoustic modules
there have been iterative upgrades in terms of design, hardware, and algorithms. For example, the sound effects have been enhanced to provide more immersive spatial audio. The chip is equipped with a 7nm process Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip. Finally, the fourth generation has also been reduced in weight and thickness compared to the third generation.
Judging from the above-mentioned parts update iterations, PICO4 Pro does not have too "amazing" optimization in terms of performance. In fact, not long ago, news of "active shrinkage" came out within PICO.
Some PICO employees said that the team optimization ratio this time is 20%-30%. Although the PICO official team stated that this optimization is a "normal organizational adjustment", there are different voices within Byte, such as rumors that sales will be reduced.
There are various signs that PICO is still some distance away from its ambition to "compete with Meta".
Let’s look at PICO’s suppliers: First of all, Goertek, as the main OEM supplier for domestic VR/AR manufacturers, has performed poorly in the first quarter of 2023. Judging from the 2023Q1 financial report, its operating income increased by 19.94% year-on-year, and the net cash flow generated from operating activities decreased by 90.84% year-on-year. This shows that Goertek's order volume decreased in the first quarter.
Goertek stated in its 2022 financial report that it will continue to adhere to the product strategy of "precision components + intelligent hardware complete machines" and actively promote precision components such as acoustics, optics, microelectronics, and structural parts, as well as virtual/augmented reality, smart wireless The development of smart hardware product business such as headphones, smart wearables, and smart homes.
This means that AR/VR OEM is Goertek’s main profit method. Therefore, the recent development of the domestic VR/AR industry can be seen from its performance in the first quarter of this year.
In addition, "Sunny", which provides camera modules and camera lenses to PICO, can also see the development of the domestic VR/AR industry more comprehensively in its 2022 financial report performance.
According to Sunny Optical Technology's
2022 financial report, its total revenue fell by 11.5% year-on-year, mainly due to a decrease in camera module sales; optical parts revenue increased by approximately 7.9% year-on-year, mainly due to a significant increase in VR-related optical parts revenue. R&D revenue increased by 6.1% year-on-year, and expenditures in the VR/AR field increased.
However, Sunny provides camera modules and lenses for PICO, but according to its financial report, sales in this area have declined. Combined with the optimization level of this PICO4 Pro product launch, it can be concluded that the momentum of PICO has declined in the past two years.
In addition to ByteDance, major manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Baidu and Tencent have also invested in the VR and AR fields.
On February 27, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun showed off his AR glasses on Weibo. This is the first smart glasses product - Mijia Glasses Camera - launched by Xiaomi ecological chain company Honeycomb Technology.
However, due to the limited field of view of optical prisms and chip computing power, Xiaomi's research and development speed in this field is still lagging behind.
But one thing is worth affirming. On the VR/AR track, we are still persisting.
In 2016, Xiaomi launched VR boxes and other hardware products, and acted as an agent to introduce Meta Oculus Go series products. It can be seen that Xiaomi has been continuing to explore this field. Therefore, from a longer-term perspective, Xiaomi is unlikely to retreat and will become a force that cannot be ignored in the future.
Let’s look at big companies such as Baidu and Tencent.
In the past two years, Baidu’s performance in the VR industry has been relatively outstanding. In the list of "Top 50 Companies in China's VR Industry in 2022", Baidu topped the list, beating out major manufacturers such as HTC, Goertek, Migu and iFlytek. Baidu has always focused on the "Xirang" platform in the VR industry, which is also called "the first domestic Metaverse" product by Baidu.
However, after 2023, Baidu has turned its energy to large AI models, showing signs of marginalization in the VR field. What caused even more uproar among the outside world was Tencent and Kuaishou. On February 16, it was revealed that Tencent’s XR department was completely cancelled. More than 300 employees only had a two-month buffer period to find internal opportunities or leave directly. The person in charge of the project, Shen Li, also resigned in November last year. Resigned monthly. In addition, in February this year, Ma Yingwu, head of the Kuaishou Yuanverse and panoramic video projects, also announced his resignation.
What’s exciting is that the “aftershocks” brought by Apple’s Vision Pro will be transmitted to the domestic AR/VR industry. The more direct impact is that Vision Pro’s disruptive changes will bring opportunities to the AR/VR industry and supply chain.
Another indirect impact is that the market's enthusiasm for VR equipment interacts with the high price of Vision Pro, which will transfer the temperature to the domestic VR market. By then, Pico and other "replacements" will have opportunities.
Behind the chip and card neck
Comparing Apple’s Vision Pro with the domestic VR “leader” PICO, the gap is quite wide.
In terms of performance, although many of Vision Pro's modules and basic hardware are domestic brands, the main gap is the chip. Foreign head VR manufacturers Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Google all use self-developed chips, while the Qualcomm chips used in China are always in a "stuck" state.
Looking specifically at the impact of chips on VR equipment, take Vision Pro as an example. It is precisely because of the M2+R1 chip combination that it is equipped with that allows the headset's computing power and device sensitivity to break through the industry's leading level.
From the perspective of market demand, affected by the epidemic, the consumer side has been significantly suppressed, and the growth rate of the domestic VR/AR industry has slowed down in the past two years. Moreover, the VR equipment update speed and R&D speed of major manufacturers are also relatively lagging behind. PICO4 Pro was originally scheduled to be launched in October 2022, but was later postponed to April this year. According to various sources, the update and iteration speed of manufacturers that provide chips for domestic VR equipment has also slowed down.
But until recently, things took a turn for the better - Apple's Vision Pro signal caused an industry earthquake. This signal will definitely accelerate the development of the VR industry. In China, it will also increase the attention of major manufacturers to the AR/VR industry and increase the iteration speed of product equipment.
However, the pricing of Apple Vision Pro has brought consumers back to reality. The high price of US$3,499 (approximately 25,000 yuan) is prohibitive. If this device is launched as scheduled early next year, VR/AR will enter the real world early next year. But if VR/AR is to enter thousands of households, it requires the efforts of the entire industry.
At present, in the domestic consumer market, VR equipment is moving in the direction of lightweight and miniaturization. For example, in the C-end market, the problem that VR equipment needs to solve is not lightweight, but VR services and experiences. In this regard, many domestic manufacturers are constantly exploring. For example, PICO has optimized the weight and front-end thickness of its latest fourth-generation product. Compared with PICO Neo3, the weight is reduced by 100g and the volume is reduced by 43%.
In terms of other sensitivities, camera modules, lenses, and chips need to be updated and iterated. At present, there is still a gap in China in terms of chips, and it is difficult to achieve breakthroughs in new single products.
