The film will clash with Kartik Aaryan starrer Chandu Champion at the box office, on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha.

Kangana Ranaut is set to star as India’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in an upcoming film, Emergency. The film, which was earlier slated to hit the big screens on November 24, 2023, will now be arriving in cinemas on June 14, 2024. The film will clash with Kartik Aaryan starrer Chandu Champion at the box office, on the occasion of Eid-al-Adha.

Kangana Ranaut revealed her upcoming project on January 23, sharing a new poster where she's dressed as Indira Gandhi. Production house Zee Studios shared the announcement and wrote, “Unlock the story behind India’s darkest hour. Announcing #Emergency on 14th June, 2024 Witness history come alive as the most feared & fiercest Prime Minister #IndiraGandhi thunders into cinemas. #Emergency in cinemas on 14th June, 2024.”

Previously, Ranaut said in a statement, “Emergency is one of the most significant and darkest chapters in our history that young India needs to know. It is a crucial story and I want to thank my super-talented actors like late Satish ji, Anupam ji, Shreyas, Mahima, and Milind for embarking on this creative journey together. I am excited to bring this extraordinary episode from India’s history to the big screen!”

Emergency revolves around the events of the 1975 Indian Emergency. The film features an ensemble cast, including Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, and Milind Soman in important roles.

Vishak Nair to play Sanjay Gandhi in Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency'

Sep 13, 2022 11:02 IST Mumbai (Maharashtra) , September 13 (AF): Actor Vishak Nair has been roped in to play the role of Sanjay Gandhi in Kangana Ranaut's directorial 'Emergency'. Sharing the first look of Vishak from the film, Kangana took to Instagram and wrote, "Presenting the powerhouse of talent @nair.vishak as #SanjayGandhi; Sanjay was the soul of Indira ... the man she loved and lost." Sanjay Gandhi, born on December 14, 1946, was the younger son of former late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He died in an air crash on 23 June 1980 near Safdarjung Airport in New Delhi. Talking about Sanjay Gandhi, Kangana said, "Sanjay is one of the most crucial people in Mrs Gandhi's life. For this I needed someone who played a man with his innocence intact but who is also shrewd at the same time. He is equally competent and equally passionate." She added, "The man needed many shades and can play a whole spectrum of emotions. Sanjay is an extension of his mother. I looked for a face for more than 6 months and I decided to launch him as the face. I am glad that after Avneet I am launching a new face in a very big scale film. Vishak is a tremendous actor and has done a slew of Malayalam movies. This is his first Hindi film and I am certain he will do great justice to Sanjay's character." Director Kangana Ranaut ropes in Mahima Chaudhry to essay the role of the Pupul Jayakar, an author, cultural activist and Mrs Gandhi’s confidante in ‘Emergency’

Kangana Ranaut starrer and directorial ‘Emergency’ has made an impact with its teaser which was released sometime back. While Ranaut garnered praise for her uncanny resemblance to Mrs Gandhi whom she portrays in the film, the choice of actors for the various characters in the film has piqued the interest of people. Ranaut plays Mrs Gandhi, Anupam Kher will be seen as the revolutionary leader J P Narayan, Shreyas Talpade essays the role of late politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now the makers have revealed that Mahima Chaudhry will be seen playing the role of author Pupul Jayakar.

Talking about this character, Kangana Ranaut says, “Pupul Jayakar was an author, a very close friend of Mrs Gandhi and has also written her autobiography. Mrs Gandhi confided in her about everything. If there is one thread that runs through the film and connects the audiences to the inner world of Mrs Gandhi, then it’s the character of Pupul Jayakar. Even though the film is a first-person account, it is not a film where somebody is the narrator. Mrs Gandhi’s interactions with Pupul are the most soulful. They shed light on how she confided her deepest darkest secrets to Pupul Jayakar. This makes her character an important person in the film called Emergency.”

Meanwhile Mahima Chaudhry who plays Pupul Jayakar adds, “Working with Kangana is an experience because she wears so many hats with such great ease. She is playing such an important political character, Mrs Indira Gandhi. She is directing it herself and producing it. I get a lot of strength looking at her and the way she functions. Pupul Jayakar was Mrs Indira Gandhi’s childhood friend so my scenes are the ones where you get to see the non-political side of this great statesman and controversial political leader during the time of Emergency. They are very open and honest with each other. You see a very different side of Mrs Gandhi. It’s very interesting to play this character and it’s been a wonderful experience working on this.”

Manikarnika films presents Emergency which is written and directed by Kangana Ranaut. The film is produced by Renu Pitti and Kangana Ranaut. The screenplay and dialogues are by Ritesh Shah.
