The featured unit of the event is an unnamed unit under the baseball team of Pumpkin Pudding up against the dastardly Shadow Devils in a baseball fight for the world! Will our heroes be able to hit the home run and beat them? Or will the Shadow Devils run bases around them?

This unit consists of Yuka Nakano, Yuki Himekawa, Haruna Kamijo, Yuko Hori, and Chiyo Shirayuki. Joining them to complete the team are Rei Shinohara, Marina Sawada, Miu Yaguchi, and Otoha Umeki

I think Shirazu not only didn't overcome his flaw of taking the burden, but he also didn't get the chance to solve the conflict which had been built up around his character in reguard to Nut's quinque. Actually, in :re, I sometimes get the feeling some situations which need a catarsis are negated one despite the plot offering the perfect chance for it. The battle against Noro was the perfect chance to address the matter of Nuts and S did actually use the quinque, but his choice isn't given the c

emotional focus I expected it to have given the buildup and S dying immediately after robbed us of any possible reflection or later reaction. What’s even more peculiar is that Nut is actually discussed in that arc, but as a quinque, not as the person she was. Instead of having S thinking abt N’s last words and taking a choice we had Chiyo’s monologue on how cool N was as a quinque. A similar thing happened with Saiko’s kagune (and later with S saving Urie). When we weren’t shown her kagune cont.

against N, I thought Ishida was planning to reveal it in a highly emotional moment or that at least her kagune held a symbolic meaning. After all I did the same with Touka’s kagune in TG. When she fought against Mado we got only a blurried vision of it and it was revealed much later in a chapter named esplicity after it. T’s kagune’s reveal was important on many level: it was cool,but it was also an important thematic and symbolic moment and fostered T’s development thanks to Kimi’s comment cont

S’s reveal however felt simply purely very cool. You have this little girl with a kagune thrice her size, but that was it. It didn’t affect her character development and it was a simple isolated moment in a battle which kept going after said revelation and which ended with S doing nothing but looking at her friend die. When she saved Urie again her inner voice was sacrificed for Hsiao telling us how cool she was. Inshort in :re it’s as if the plot makes a lot of chances for its characters to con

realize their flows and correct it, but the characters are constantly failing it. Haise is given the chance to reconcile with his past, he simply has to choose so, but refuses. Characters like Touka and Amon are directly built up as characters who are able to unlock K’s memories, but once again they refuse to do so. K is built up as the one who has to save Eto, but he refuses and E is built up as having an arc of her own which centers around her father, but she refuses to face it and “dies” cont

So in the end the pattern we are seeing with all the characters failing to realize their flaws despite all the blows they take is simply this pattern in :re repeating itself: there is the possibility of sinergy btw the plot and the characters, but the characters refuse to move the plot and to learn from it and so the plot can’t do anything if not keep going and presentign the characters with even harder challenges. Sorry for this loooong rambling!

No worries! You’re always welcome to send me your thoughts; thanks so much for sending them! I agree with your assessment of a lot of this–Shirazu’s quinque focus arc was left unfinished completely, and Saiko repeatedly refuses to be a main character with an even though she’s set up to be. I do think build-up has to matter eventually so I’m not quite ready to say Eto’s escaped that build-up, for example, but you’re absolutely right that this is a pattern of anti-climax/characters refusing to do what the narrative is asking them to do. I think a lot of the recent stagnation is because of the Moon Arc (kill it with fire) and most of the characters from the original TG seem traumatized and trapped in the past right now, and have seemed that way for much of :re (even Tsukiyama), trying to return to life pre Anteiku Raid (with a few exceptions like Takizawa). The characters introduced in :re seem to be trapped too, trying to return to life pre-Rose arc. 

But yeah. Something has to happen to force them out of this stagnation/force them to face reality, and the longer this goes on the more worried I become about what it could possibly be (Dragoneki isn’t enough? Dragonamon? Like I’m very worried there won’t be a Tokyo if that happens lol but I also think we’re heading for Dragonamon so). Considering the Freudian themes of TG, it’s interesting to me that characters who have escaped this mindset like Takizawa have notably killed their father figures–killed the safety of their past. In this case… Amon needs to face Donato, Akira needs to accept her father was awful in a lot of ways, Ayato and Touka need to face Arata, Hinami needs to grow beyond Kaneki, Tsukiyama Mirumo is probably going to die (whiiiich I’ve always expected), Kaneki needs to tear down the throne his parental figures gave him, Juuzou needs to grow past Shinohara, the Quinxes need to face Kaneki (and possibly Shirazu), and Ui and Hirako need to come to terms with Arima’s death, and they need to get rid of the “father” or creator of this world (V).
