Patrik Svensson
Love this work from Patrik, who has been inspired by Shigeo Fukuda. He’s taken the concept of using an extended body part, in this case, the arm and hand and used it to promote the story of Spiderman. Using the start of the story where Peter Parker is first bitten by the spider runs alongside the trademark hand gesture and small intricacies of Spiderman’s suit with the fired web.
This works so well in communicating the premise of Spiderman’s story but also unlike Shigeo Fukuda, Patrik has included a splash of colour to enhance Spiderman with his trademark suit colour.

WOII - Week 1: Phenomenology
In our recent lecture, we delved into the philosophical concept of 'Phenomenology,' it is a philosophical approach that focuses on the study of conscious experience from the first-person perspective. Phenomenology seeks to understand the essence and structures of lived experiences, exploring how individuals perceive and make sense of the world around them (Mambrol, 2020).
Armed with this fresh insight, we embarked on a photographic exploration throughout the school, each tasked with capturing various thematic elements. I was drawn to the theme of "time".
Tumblr media
Subsequently, we took turns presenting our individual interpretations of the concepts "time" and "shadow," and I was deeply moved by James' portrayal of "shadow."
Tumblr media
Phenomenology emphasises the significance of emotional resonance in design, a principle that Shigeo Fukuda masterfully embodies in his work. His posters not only captivate viewers with their visual illusions but also provoke thought and stir emotions, fostering a profound connection between the audience and the message conveyed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Furthermore, having an understanding of phenomenology is also beneficial for my work in craft and studio endeavours as it prompts me to consider not only my own perceptions but also those of the audience. For example, while crafting trading cards for studio projects, I am challenged to tap into the creative vision of my selected designer and illustrator, striving to replicate the same effects.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conclusion, the principles of phenomenology encourage me to explore further into the subjective experiences of those interacting with my designs, fostering a more thoughtful and intentional approach to visual communication. By embracing this perspective, I can create designs that resonate with and engage my audience effectively.

Week 3 Pres.
The themes of copying, tracing and duplication were essential ideas in the direction of my artmaking. I decided to play with shadows once again but this time taking techniques and ideas from my past works to focus on the idea of copying and iteration with a twist. I decided to experiment with materials like plastic to mimic the properties of glass to create an amalgamation of a sculpture in the form of a copy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I think of artists I know or like, I think of artists such as Monet; Specifically his bright and whimsical landscape works.
Tumblr media
Drawing from these two ideas, I decided to first simulate it in Computer-Aided-Drawing software such as Blender and Fusion 360 as using actual lighting requires a ton of effort and resources I lack right now.
In summary, the whole ordeal was a lot harder than I thought.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I succeeded in visualising the manually drawn part of the painting (kind of) in 3D form.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, I couldn't properly render these drawings in highly detailed and high-quality 3D images to utilise the effect of the light. This is because running a high-quality render with lights interacting with multiple transparent objects at the same time quite nearly broke my computer by heating up the CPU so much that the fans couldn't keep up, nearly melting it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In conjunction with these 3D renders, I plan to similarly cut plastic bottles and try to layer them to create a similar effect with some modifications.
To further better the quality of my work, I decided to use proper equipment for illumination as - unlike my previous works - this design is linked closely to the idea of lights and lighting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, as my works have to do with the idea of the image within shadows, many artists have been an inspiration including Shigeo Fukuda, Douglas Hofstadter, and Kumi Yamashita.

The fandom likes to interpret Shou as this chaotic hyperactive boy out there sitting fire to everything within reach. While yes, he is chaotic, and yes, he wouldn't mind the idea of arson for fun- it's just that when taken out of context, the course of actions he takes sounds absolutely obnoxious and unfathomable and a little concerning. But when you actually think about it, every single aspect of his plan made sense, and it's so strategic that it's actually unsettling and yes, still concerning.
He had this absolute good read on Shigeo & Ritsu from the very first moment they met and was confident enough to act upon it. Not only did he feel that connection between himself & the younger Kageyama, he also recognized how Shigeo is not the fighting type, he got to see how much insane strength Shigeo has behind all the hesitation and "cowardice". He used Ritsu as bait and discovered how far Shigeo is willing to go for his loved ones has they got in harm's way.
With all this knowledge in mind, he did what's exactly necessary to get his plan moving and the fact that he planned everything all of a sudden is actually impressive, he wasn't ready for his father's schemes to take action, he thought of everything after Toichiro's announcement of world domination. Of course his plan to get Shigeo to fight would be by giving him enough of a reason to do so, by hurting the family Shigeo loves dearly, by not giving him anyone AND anywhere to turn into except the sheer raw murderous intent and vengeance. Should he have just asked for help? Shou would argue that Shigeo would have tried to talk his way through things, find a peaceful solution to the matter, something where nobody gets hurt. And in Shou's mind this would be the most ridiculous thing in the world, because Shou knows his dad, and in the end Shou was right, there is no talking to Toichiro, and Shigeo understood that too. " Sometimes you've got to be a little hurt to understand. "
And the fact that Shigeo has simply forgiven him so easily- it still sits with Shou in all the wrong ways even though Shou barely feels any remorse for what he did. But how can you forgive someone who made you see the bodies of your family burning to death? Why aren't you angry? Where is your rage? How can you handle it so well when someone has hurt you this bad? Shou has never learnt how to be like that, he could never find it in himself to act like that, but he recognized the sort of strength Shigeo has despite all the confusion, and how much of an admirable person he is, and Shou continues to feel conflict abt it all.
Why fire though? Blood and gore make too much of a mess, kidnapping or anything but literal death wouldn't get Shigeo angry enough, but it was also a somewhat reckless personal decision he took after "learning" about Extreme Exposure therapy, Fukuda kept a close eye on him immediately, nothing bad happened.
Getting the idea to work was the craziest part tho, Higashio asked for three pigs in order to make the dummies.
