prequel to Elatsoe, following her grandmother as a teen in the 1970s
after a devastating flood and loss of family members & their traditional home, she works with her mother & their ghost dogs, tracking down missing people
when a local boy goes missing - and her mother, when trying to find him - strange fairy rings (not the usual, reliable ones used for transport) might be to blame, and she and her friends, brother, and lone (unreliable) grandfather have to try find them
friendship, family, ecology, no romance, ghost bugs :)

I was trying to figure out when it was set based on like. assumption of ag#(since it doesn't actually say in the book; just the acknowledgements)#the end made me cry so much and it’s not even sad#I feel like I need to reread elatsoe now...#no romance#also it has some side sapphics

off the top of my head: Dear Wendy, A Dark and Drowning Tide, Fallen Thorns, Don't Let The Forest In, The Dead Cat Tail Assassins, Those Beyond The Wall, So Let Them Burn - plenty more though I don't really keep track, i just remember about them when they come out lol!
also, two 2024 releases I've already read that are so so good: The Feast Makers and Sheiné łénde!

5 What genre did you read the most of?
fantasy, babey! (lgbtq according to storygraph, but I mean that's not really a genre)
11 What was your favorite book that has been out for a while, but you just now read?
I mean I feel like I have to answer with Imperial Radch here. That's the main one. Also The Starless Sea, Innsmouth Legacy, River of Teeth.... Reading/finishing some backlist series I haven't gotten round to is something I should do more of next year!
20 What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
ooh. The World We Make, The Infinite, He Who Drowned The World, A Day of Fallen Night are some sequels which, yes! same with The Feast Makers & Sheiné łénde though they're technically not out yet.
for non sequels (which in general even if I am hyped for, I tend to remove my expectations for before reading) I remember being excited for The Deep Sky, The Spirit Bears Its Teeth, Just Lizzie..... (all good), tbh if something ends up disappointing me I just forget how I was anticipating it hahah

Thank you! These are just the immediate handful that come to mind, at least with what feels like MG~YA-ish to me:
Alebrijes by Donna Barba Higuera - postapocalyptic earth & some magical scifi (I think is classed as MG, but feels crossover to me?)
All of Darcie Little Badger's books: Elatsoe, A Snake Falls To Earth, Sheiné łénde - contemporary fantasy with Lipan Apache MCs, focus on ecology & friendship/family
Pet & Bitter by Akwaeke Emezi - uptopian-ish magical realism, monsters & community; (the former is usually classed as MG and the latter YA, because of the ages of the MCs I think? but they're sort of both-ish / have that all-ages vibe)
Euphoria Kids by Alison Evans - magical contemporary about trans kids in a small Australian town
The Name-Bearer by Natalia Hernandez - queer Latinx high fantasy, (this is one that is intended as YA but reads a bit younger and doesn't quite work for me, but might be of interest!)
