Rajasthan and Royalty both are inseparable from each other and Jodhpur is the perfect example of that. Famously known as ‘The Blue City‘ is the gateway of Thar desert. Gigantic forts, splendid palaces, iconic clock tower, charming markets, eye-catching handicrafts and textiles, mouth-watering local dishes, all these things make this city worth a visit.
Mainly, houses of the old part of this city are indigo painted. Life in every city is so different and Jodhpur also has its own essence. Walking through the narrow lanes between old blue houses, having onion or mawa kachori with tea, exploring lively marketplaces full of local handicrafts, textiles, decorative and antique items, all of these surely give you the vibe of this city.
Places to Visit in Jodhpur (Jodhpur Sightseeing)
Mehrangarh Fort: This is the most famous tourist spot of Jodhpur. This really huge fort is protecting the ‘Blue City’ from one side. It is known for its ultimate construction and one of the nicely maintained forts. It is so big that at least 3-4 hours needed for roaming all the parts of this fort. The first step inside this fort gives a feel of taking back to an era of royalty and magnificence. This one is a balanced combination of rigid structure from outside and elegant design in inside. Interior architecture of this fort is marvellous. Following are the highlights of the interior of this fort.
Sheesh Mahal: The whole chamber is made of mirror from ceilings to floors. One can see this chamber only through a hole. The charm of this place is adorned with colourful wall paintings reflected on the mirrors.
Phool Mahal: As you stepped into this place, will be stunned for a few moments. Whether it’s beautiful flower curving on the pillars or coloured glass windows or the intricate golden work, each and everything will astonish you. This room was made only for men to celebrate various occasions.
Moti Mahal: Detailed curving on walls, incredible glass work ceiling, stained glass windows are the reflection of the royalty of this fort.
Once you complete the inside part, then go to the top of this fort. Here one can find cannons arranged in a row; and they were part of many historical events. The eye soothing view from the top of the Mehrangarh Fort is just stunning. Sit there, feel the silence and enjoy the sunset from the top of the Royal fort of India.
Another attraction is Rajasthan International Folk Festival which takes place at this fort annually in Sharad Poornima (in the month of October). It is an art and music festival where folk musicians and artists can take part from all over India. The main purpose of this festival is to encourage traditional folk music and arts. So, you can plan your trip accordingly to attend this vibrant festival.
Umaid Bhawan Palace:This is the only palace in India, built in the 20th century. Architectural brilliance of this sandstone and marble-built palace attracts a lot of people from various parts of the world. One part of this palace is converted to a 5-star hotel and in the other part of the hotel, Maharaja of Jodhpur lives there. The most impressive thing is the nicely decorated garden in front of this palace. Here one can sit for hours and enjoy the beauty of the palace.
Mandore Garden: Apart from majestic fort and palace, this place gives a different taste of ‘Blue City’. Mandore garden is a place where memorials of Marwar dynasty have been found. The typical Rajasthani architectural designs of the cenotaphs are very alluring. Hindu temples are built in line and the images of 33 crore Gods are kept there in a temple.
Other side of this garden is beautified with trees, flowers and lake where one can found various birds and fishes. This place will certainly give you a pleasing and relaxing environment.
Jaswant Thada: Are you interested in the history of Marwar? Then this place is perfect for you. This memorial was built as a tribute to the ruler Jaswant Singh who was known for his various good initiatives like establishment of court of justice, development of the state by initiating Telegraph service, rail and road network. This intricate marble architecture attracts people for its milky white shine under the sunrays. The museum in Jaswant Thada shows history and gives information about Marwar through the paintings and portraits of Marwar rulers.

Eid Milad-un-Nabi Mubarak
Eid Mubarak to all our dear Muslim friends… Yesterday was Eid Milad-un-Nabi, also the night of Sharad Poornima. What a beautiful coincidence! To be honest, I had never heard of this Eid until yesterday. Until I witnessed this… hundreds and hundreds of people on trucks, in beautifully decorated autos, on bikes, pedestrians waving the Islamic flags along with our Tricolour. Men wearing gorgeous…

Winter is here:
Winter is here. Right now the weather is cool, not chilly. We in India call it, "Gulaabi-Sardi" which means it is pleasantly cold. However, it will be troublesome before it goes away, and then we would need to make changes in our day to day life to fight the winter blues. There will be changes in clothing, kind of oils to be used for hair, skin and food of-course. So where shall we start, Food? Okay so let’s start with something sweet, how about ‘Kheer’?
All Indian festivals are always in line with changing weather and ensures well-being. One such festival is ‘Sharad-Poornima’ Sharad is one of the six ‘Hritu’ in India, it means winter, and Poornima means night of full Moon. It is celebrated differently in various parts of India. Where I live, we prepare ‘kheer’ an Indian home-made sweet. Keep it under the sky to absorb beneficial rays from Sharad-Poornima’s Moon and have it the next morning.
Let me also share my Kheer recipe with you-
Things we need to make Kheer:
Half tea-spoon ghee (clarified butter)
2-pods of cardamom
1-table spoon rice
1-liter full cream milk
1-table spoon sugar or 6-8 dates (soak the dates and make a fine paste)
Some nuts like almonds, cashew etc (roast and cut the nuts in desired size)
Few strands of saffron
We’ll also need a heavy bottom pot to cook it…
Prep: Wash and soak rice for 30 mins
Soak saffron in a tablespoon of milk
Crush cardamom pods
Soak and grind dates into fine paste (if you’re using date instead of sugar)
Let’s get started: Put the pot on the stove, turn it on, add ghee into the pot, add crushed cardamom stir it add drained-soaked rice, stir it a few times now add milk. Keep it stirring to prevent sticking at the bottom of the pot. Cook it till the rice is soft and mushy and milk is reduced and a bit yellowish. Add soaked saffron, roasted-cut nuts, let it simmer some more now turn off the heat and add sugar or date-paste. Voila! :)
A pro tip by my mother-in-law: (mash soaked rice with your hand it will help rice to cook faster and your Kheer will be thicker and yummier. ;)
You can have it hot or can cool it up to your liking or try keeping it under the sky, whole night and eat in the morning. :)
Happy Reading, Happy eating and Happy Sharad-Poornima! :)
