Janelle Monáe takes time out from being a Hollywood superstar and 'free-ass motherfucker’ to release her first new single in two years, ‘Float,’ featuring Seun Kuti and Afrobeat band, Egypt 80.
Bold, brassy and boastful, the singer/actress is light as a feather both in delivery and demeanour, offering up some weird wordplay as she switches effortlessly between singing and rapping. But then again, she is having epiphanies at Tiffany’s and dancing on catamarans, and if that’s not living the good life…
According to those close to Monáe ‘Float was inspired by ‘Muhammed Ali talking shit in Zaire,’ among other things, including ‘Mary Poppins’ umbrella, Aladdin’s magic carpet, Raul’s toast on 1 December, and Bruce Lee’s mighty philosophy on being "shapeless, formless," and becoming one with your surroundings, to be like water.’
And… yeah, I think I hear all that. The Ali shit-talking, most definitely… ☆(◒‿◒)☆
