Drive My Car (2021)
Director - Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Cinematography - Hidetoshi Shinomiya
"But even if you think you know someone well, even if you love that person deeply, you can't completely look into that person's heart. You'll just feel hurt. But if you put in enough effort, you should be able to look into your own heart pretty well. So in the end, what we should be doing is to be true to our hearts and come to terms with it in a capable way. If you really want to look at someone, then your only option is to look at yourself squarely and deeply."

Drive My Car (ドライブ・マイ・カー)
Tumblr media
Summary: Two years after the untimely death of his wife, actor-director Yusuke Kafuku (Hidetoshi Nishijima) accepts a residency to direct a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya. Whilst there, he bonds with his chauffeur, Misaki Watari (Toko Miura) and wrestles with his unresolved grief.
Moving drama with a tonne of dramatic irony and misleading premise. Runtime is barely felt, despite too many endings.
Rating: 4.25/5

okay three people asked me to expand on why i think mamoru hosoda is a hack and it boils down to "conformity is good actually"
my opinions are based largely around wolf children and boy and the beast and will have spoilers for both these films. i have seen mirai, belle, and girl who leapt through time but the impression they left on me was too weak/seen too long ago for me to use them confidently as evidence. summer wars is a perfect movie but importantly: he didn't write it. that was written by satoko okudera. apparently so was girl who leapt through time but im not TALKING about that movie.
i'm taking about wolf children and boy and the beast.
the end of the girl wolf child's arc in that film is being a normal girl. she gives up her interests, the things that make her happy (bugs and Being A Fucking Wolf) for the sake of fitting in, and for a boy. the boy wolf gets to go and have adventures in the woods and be free but She has to conform to life as a girl because a boy thinks she should be normal and this is not portrayed as tragic.
in boy and the beast, the boy is brought into this beautiful, magical world where he's powerful, respected, and has a family. it's a place where he's happy and successful and is just generally better than earth. it's fucking narnia. in the end, he gives that all up and goes back to living on an earth he hasn't been to for half his life. why? for a father who abandoned him and i guess regretted it later, and a girl he just met. my man is a master swordsman and gives all that up to go to college, for some reason. he has an enormous fantasy world he can live in, a REAL actual escape, and he would rather study for college entrance exams. and we're supposed to find that admirable?
it's shinzo abe you will not improve the birthrate trash. it takes these wonderful fantasy concepts and goes "but remember: you have to be straight and live in society to be truly happy" as if that's a lesson anybody actually wants to hear and doesn't kneecap the endings. like sure you can go "oooh weh escapism is unhealthy though, we have to live in reality" but then maybe he could do a better job convincing me these endings Are actually good for these characters and not grim inevitabilities.
also he keeps fucking making the digimon movie again and if that isn't hack behavior

rereading the first chapters to Firefly wedding... sick and twisted SICK AND TWISTED. shinpei does not have a sparkle in his eye until
satoko wipes the blood fr his mouth
it disappears again but it might be there when he first says they should get married. hard to tell
then once more when he watches her dance
then when he tells her he loves her in the grotto with the fireflies (what a freakish little man)
when she scolds him when they plan to have her bought (notable the panel she mentions marriage)
When she asks what would happen if he died
when she shows him her scar
when she calls him out for wanting to escape the island
when he offers to carry the firewood
when he tries to explain what he likes about her
when she's a gross mess crying bc she hurt him by lying (side note FUNNY THAT bc she was saying she hated lying to husbands ab her illness but this is a reverse)
when she's sobbing telling him she can't marry him
he pretty much has the shine to his eyes for the rest of the scene too
when he's relieved? i guess that nothing bad happened to her after the girls attacked her
when she tells him she's glad she met him
when she tells him she doesn't want him to die
when he's lying near dead muttering ab giving her his heart
change of pace SHE looses the sparkle in her eye when he's lying near dead
not a sparkle in his eye but like. seeing her weep openly ab his wellbeing made him super horny?????
side note I'm INSANE ab how he zeroes in on her surgery scar and basically starts worshiping it
sparkle returns when he learns she didn't leave his side
when aoi says it's a mutual love: he gets the actual high school girl kicking feet on bed sort of reaction to this
when she is thankful he came back alive
being sooky and clingy towards her asking her to cuddle
im willing to count that the first shot of his face after she forcibly holds him as a sparkle due to his eyes being completely white, rather than the solid black they are in the next one
when she says she doesn't want to part fr him
when he embraces her himself
when she's like "your warmth makes me feel like we're alive" FUCK OOOOOFFFFFFFFFFFFF
when he learns he gets to run errands with her
going to get dango
telling her he'll set her free
wanting to fuck around the market with her for longer
just before he lifts her and exclaims that he's enjoying it
when he has her up in the air above him
when he's looking at her while picking out the geta
laughing with her
when he's reading her letter
telling her he was happy to get the letter
telling her smth ab her that he likes
seeing her hold his response letter
when he asks to see her face and she opens the door wide enough
god

no bc i love higurashi but i absolutely hate keiichi sometimes he can be such a creep especially in the second arc like when he meets shion when she’s a waitress at that one restaurant and when they’re playing the game in the beginning of the episode and he made the comment ab letting the two boys do whatever they wanted to rika and satoko it’s literally so uncomfortable i’m supposed to watch this with my cousins later today but like i don’t want him to be uncomfortable and it’ll just be awkward at those parts

Drive My Car

reoccurring themes in firefly wedding are like, duty, freedom and happiness
at the start satoko thinks fulfilling her duty will bring her happiness. no freedom
shinpei does his duty to the island. freedom and happiness are basically illusions
they meet and freedom becomes their joint theme
he gives up his duty for her freedom and happiness
she is conflicted ab her duty, bc she wants his for his happiness, but is sure ab giving him his freedom
