rani ‘i’m gonna cause problems on purpose’ sandyhill my beloved

probably a hobbit intro, but you could make it work for others if you wanted. you’re out for a walk or running errands or something and you run into rani, who is ostensibly on the job as part of the quickpost. she stops to chat and also to gossip, as one does, and in the middle of this you hear something coming down the road (with accompanying dread aura) and you get off the road

rani would love to go take a look at whatever’s coming down the road. you tell her this is a bad idea. she does not care. ‘here, take this [class appropriate weapon],’ she says. ‘where did you get this? where were you holding it?’ you say. ‘don’t worry about it,’ she says. (she bought it perfectly legitimately because she thought it looked cool) ‘take a few swings with it at that tree over there.’ (combat tutorial)

you turn around and she’s gone, already halfway up the hill to snoop. new objective: follow rani (quietly!). do not let yourself be seen

‘what was that???’ you want to ask. rani has no answers for you even if you do

rani: suddenly afflicted with a sense of responsibility that she’s been avoiding as long as hobbitly possible. ‘you should head home,’ she says, with terribly unconvincing calm. ‘maybe… maybe tell the bounders about this. yeah, tell the bounders. michel delving isn’t far.’

‘what about you?’ you say. ‘don’t worry about it,’ she says. (she’s gonna get back to delivering the mail. it’s fine! the riders went the other way. she definitely knows what she’s doing)

i don’t know that this one does a whole lot by way of typical introduction stuff- kinda just dumps you out in the world the way the mossward intro does. maybe you put a little run in with some neekerbreekers or one or two of the brigands who catch you in the normal hobbit instance before rani leaves. you just get dumped in the shire, really. you probably still get roped into talking to the sackville-bagginses, no matter how much you insist you weren’t anywhere near them, nor are you a bounder or a member of the quickpost, and you’re certainly not employed by the mayor’s office, and oops you’re fighting goblins and hanging out with this halros guy now. you keep meeting rani in the most ridiculous of places, and she keeps insisting she’s here on quickpost business (sometimes this is even true). she offers you a job with the quickpost. you maybe have already joined the quickpost (rani also 0% has the authority to hire people on the quickpost’s behalf, but that’s neither here nor there). you say goodbye to rani

On January 13th 1958 serial killer, Peter Manuel, was arrested for spree of attacks that left 9 people dead.

Peter Manuel was the second of three children to be born to Samuel and Bridget Manuel. Surprisingly, he was born in the Misere Cordia Hosptial in Manhattan, New York on 15 March 1927. His parents had emigrated to America to seek a better life during the Depression of the 1920’s. They tried to settle in Detroit, Michigan, with Samuel working in a car factory and Bridget working as a domestic servant, but Samuel became ill and poverty drove them back to Scotland in 1932. They were unsettled on their return and moved from Motherwell to Coventry in 1937. Peter was ten years of age and had an American accent. He did not settle into English school life.

Peter’s first brush with the law was in 1938 when he broke into a chapel and stole the offertory box. He was never out of trouble over the next few years and was a regular inmate of the borstals and approved schools. When he was 15 he committed his first act of violence when he attacked a sleeping woman with a hammer during one of his housebreaking ventures. For this he went to Leeds Prison. About this time his parents moved back to Lanarkshire after they lost their home to the bombing of Coventry, and Peter followed after he was released from borstal.

On 16th February 1946, Peter Manuel broke into a bungalow in the Sandyhills area of Lanarkshire. Detective Constable William Muncie (later ACC in Strathclyde Police) and a local sergeant searched the house and found a bedroom in the loft. Having satisfied themselves it was empty, they gathered the productions together and took them away for fingerprint examination.

Later that day, realising he had forgotten a cup in the kitchen of the house that appeared to have a fingerprint on it, D.C. Muncie returned to the house in time to see Manuel emerge from the garden. He apprehended him. He established that Manuel had been living in the house and had hidden behind wood panelling in the loft when the house was searched. While on bail for this offence, he committed three assaults on women, including a rape on an expectant mother. He got eight years imprisonment in Peterhead Prison and also won the praise of the judge for the skill with which he conducted his own defence! He was released in the summer of 1953, aged 26.

The afternoon of Wednesday 4 January 1956, was to mark the beginning of one of the largest police investigations Scotland has ever seen which would last for exactly two years. It was a cold, dry afternoon and George Gribbon was taking a walk on a golf course in East Kilbride when he found the body of a young woman in a wooded area known as Capelrig Copse. Sickened by the sight, Gribbon ran towards the road and saw some Gas Board engineers. His frantic description was taken as a joke by the workers and he ran off towards Calderglen Farm, from where he called the police.

The first officers at the scene found that the dead woman’s head had been smashed in. They also saw the marks of running feet in the mud which indicated that the woman had run for her life for over 400 yards. She had also been indecently assaulted.

The woman was identified as Anne Kneilands, a 17 year old who had lived with her parents on the Calderwood Estate. She had gone dancing during the Hogmanay holiday on 2 January but had not returned. Her parents, thinking she was staying at a friend’s home, did not report her missing until the morning of 4 January.

me, trying to figure out where and when she is, ever: uh oh

so, rani's part of the quickpost, and is also just. nosy as hell. she meets some of the iron garrison when they pass through on their way from ered luin to moria, she bothers isena & isedd before they finally decide to head home, and she impulsively invites herself on silear & halthel's gaunt-lord adventures more than once- and most of that is background to most of her plot, which is Adventures With Bingo. somehow she's in all the places and ended up tying everyone else's stories together

also yondershire happened and she had Opinions on that, and also new and exciting motivations along the lines of 'ruin lotho's day'. this did Not help with the timeline things, but i can and will handwave some of that anyway, and her having an actual character is more important so! there she goes. she's far less bothered that other people are messing with the mail than by the fact that they're being sloppy about it. she's gonna run all the way to rivendell to ask bingo a question and pretend this is a reasonable thing to do. she happens so much
