The O in the "LOVE" sculpture being lowered into place. It was cold and the skies leadenly forshadowed rain, but "LOVE" arrived monumentally in New York yesterday in time to gladden the city's face for Christmas. "LOVE," a five-ton sculpture by Robert Indiana, the pop artist, will be on display for the next six weeks at Fifth Avenue and 60th Street, at the entrance to Central Park, where it will be highly visible to midtown strollers and shoppers. [11-29-1971]

In 1964 the Museum of Modern Art in New York commissioned Indiana to design its Christmas card. Inspired by his paintings, he chose the word LOVE, with the LO and VE stacked on top of one another to fit the square format of the card and slanted the 'O' to create extra visual interest and kept to minimal vibrant colours. He offered several colour combinations and the museum chose the red letters on a blue and green background.

The result was the best-selling Christmas card in the museum's history and the cementing of an iconic image in the public consciousness.

This took longer to make than I had anticipated.
Mostly the font placement with regards to the U, since Robert’s original design leverages the letter O which has square block form allowed for infinite angle rotation around the center. After numerous trials I settled on an 90° rotation which I felt really pulls out the emotion of the word. 😅😅☺️☺️
