Hannah Snell “The Woman in Men's Cloaths”
Hannah Snell was born on 23 April 1723 in Worcester, England. She moved to London in 1740 and married James Summes, a Dutch Sailor, on 6 January 1744. Two years later their daughter Susannah was born and died after only one year. Her husband had left her while she was still pregnant and now without husband and child she saw no other way out than to look for him.

She borrowed men's clothes from her brother-in-law James Gray and used his name. According to her account, following the death of her daughter, on 23 November 1745, she joined John Guise's regiment, the 6th Regiment of Foot, in the army of the Duke of Cumberland against Bonnie Prince Charlie. She deserted when her sergeant gave her 500 lashes and moved to Portsmouth and joined the Marines. At this point it was not true, because the events and dates she gave, as well as the chronologies of her life, make it unlikely that she served under John Guise.
Rather, after the death of her daughter, she went to Portmouth to look for him and learned that he had been executed for murder. What motivated her to join the Marines is not clear. Some historians suggest that she had hoped to find him at sea or at a naval base and joined the Marines before learning of his death. What is certain, however, is that she boarded HMS Swallow on 23 October 1747 and sailed for Lisbon on 1 November of the same year. In August 1748, her unit was sent on an expedition to capture the French colony of Pondicherry in India. She later also took part in the Battle of Devicotta in June 1749. She was wounded eleven times in the legs and once in the groin. She either managed to treat her groin wound without revealing her sex, or she enlisted the services of a compassionate Indian nurse.

In 1750, her unit returned to Britain and travelled from Portsmouth to London, where she revealed her gender to her shipmates on 2 June. She asked the Duke of Cumberland, the commander-in-chief of the army, for her pension. She was then honourably discharged and, because of her good service, was promised a pension in November 1750. Hoping for the pension but uncertain that she would receive it, she sold her story in June to Robert Walker, a publisher in London, who published it in two different editions.

Curious about who this woman was, more and more people wanted to see her and so she appeared in public and in theatres in her uniform and told of her adventures, showed her fighting skills and sang marching songs. Three painters painted portraits of her in her uniform and The Gentleman's Magazine also covered her story in July.

After her pension was approved Hannah retired to Wapping and began running a pub called The Female Warrior or The Widow in Masquerade - sources disagree on this - but it did not last long. She then moved to Newbury in Berkshire in the mid-1750s. In 1759 she married a second time to a man called Richard Eyles, with whom she had two children. And in 1772 she married a third time to a man called Richard Habgood from Welford, also in Berkshire, and they moved to the Midlands. In 1785 she was living with her son George Spence Eyles, a clerk, in Church Street, Stoke Newington, but in that year her pension was withdrawn.

She appeared to be suffering from Alzheimer's disease and her health deteriorated gradually but not dramatically. This suddenly changed in 1791. she was admitted to Bethlem Hospital on 20 August and died on 8 February 1792. she was then buried in Chelsea Hospital, which had already been a hospital and let's call it an old people's home for veterans of the British army and also functioned like the Royal Navy Hospital in greenwhich is now even an old people's and nursing home.

no kiss  very fine morning F48 ½° at 7 25 am out at 7 ¾ - a few minutes minutes with Charles H- and then off to High Roydes - found Holt at breakfast - going this morning to settle about 200D.W. of coal (upper and lower bed) he had just bought of Waddington adjoining Mr Walker Priestley’s coal - will come to Shibden at 11 am tomorrow - the Machans cannot agree about the money they are to have for their coal; but Holt is sure of the coal - thinks I may get more water by driving down towards Dove house asked for his vote - he had said he would not vote at all - I said we would talk about it - home at 9 - breakfast till 10 – some time with my father and Marian had my hair pinched and dressed Mr Dearden, commonly called colonel, came about 11 ½ for about ¾ hour - had sandwiches and wine - both of us very civil to each other - apologized for the liberty I had taken in sending for him - shewed the plans and explained - he seemed delighted with the whole thing - said it would be a great advantage for the town - a good Inn and large handsome room were much wanted - I said the estimate was £5000 and I expected the cost would be £600 - and the interest of this even at 4p.c. = £24 present rent £84 and probably I could not get more than £300 a year rent now - there was no prospect of gain - I only calculated what would be the least loss - I should call the large room the Casino - everybody would see that it was not a mercantile speculation - but I had a pride in the thing - only anxious to know whether I could get the house licensed or not before I embarked in some serious expense - Mr D- thought there was no doubt - he said he would answer for himself and his son and promised to consult with the other magistrates on the subject - hoped I should be repaid in the end - Carr (of Halifax) had offered £1500 a year for the Bull mouth in London and it could not be taken that large Inns when well accustomed let very high - Mr. D- asked for my name to the subscription for Mr. Wortley’s (John) election for the West Riding - about 7 or 8 names down for £50 - said I would turned over the leaf and give them £30 - Mr. D- urged so well that I laughed and said well! if you will secure me the licence I will put down my name for £50 - yes! said he ‘I will answer for the licence’ and I put my name down for £50 - then sometime with A- and told my father and Marian a little of what had passed - saw A- mounted on her pony about 2 and off to Brighouse to Mrs Earnshaw to inquire about a Sunday school teacher - then my aunt had Mr Jubb and my father also had him to examine his ear, he is so very deaf - sometime with Mr J- not sanguine about Mr Wortley - but hopes this will be an introduction and we shall bring him at the next general election - then out with Charles Howarth- sawing planks for laundry chamber floor - then had Mr Bradley - he came to ask me for the loan of £6 till next Monday when he would certainly repay me - I not at all believing this said I begged he would take the money on account - this does not look well - I am afraid of this beginning to borrow of me - did not detain him long - just took him to the fish pond saying I had now determined to let the water rise as high as the top of the dry bridge arch which plan he liked very much - then with Richard Woodhead and his son railing in Little field and with Robert Schofield and his man mending the upper Conery wall against Walker pit road - then sauntering about and musing about the fish pond and came in about 6 ¼ - dinner at 6 ½ - A- in great hope of Mrs Earnshaw’s finding her a Sunday school mistress - had John Bottomely and Rober Schofield and paid the former his bill for carting good soil to near the fish pond and settled with the latter for the days’ labour up to yesterday evening - had Thomas Pearson today he thought he had found me a black pony that would do for the gin price £5.10.0 - coffee - ¼ hour with my father and Marian - then read a very little of the newspaper - note from Captain Dearden - warm thanks for my £50 subscription and asking me to use my influence with William Moore of Staups and 1 or 2 more - wrote note in answer  vid. line 6 below that I had got Thomas Pearson’s vote - did not despair of Holt, and had neutralized George R- who would be in Scotland - said I did not know [Job] Hanson of upper Shibden Hall - had just written my note when hearing a Mr Bent had brought Captain D-‘s note went downstairs into the drawing room - Mr B- a very respectable young man (of Mytholm Royde A- says) and warm friend to the cause - had wine and seemed much pleased with his visit and staid about ½ hour - I wanted my time for other things but no matter - sent my note by Mr Bent - then with A- who was writing to her sister - with my aunt ¼ hour till 10 ¼ - then wrote to go by George tomorrow morning letter to Mr. Thomas about John Clarke and to Mr George cooper about the chesnut fillies and wrote note to Mr Bateman enclosing £35 for the fillies alias ponies which took me till 11 3/4 pm at which hour F53° - fine day - Letter this morning from Mr Jonathan Gray and from Mr Thomas - letter this afternoon from M- and letter this evening from Monsieur Gaudin Geneva - particulars of which to be given by and by - long in getting into bed on account of cousin

Game of Throne Season 8 review with spoilers
This season was a mix of epic triumph, character arcs coming to completion, others missing the mark, and some disappointing turn of events.
First, I really enjoyed the first two episodes. They were more like a two-parter with most of the banter between characters taking place at Winterfell. Lena Heady (as Cersei) didn’t have a lot of screen time this season since most of the focus was on preparing for the battle with the white walkers and the Knight King.
Speaking of which, viewers also complained the entire episode was too dark. To me, that was low on the list of what went wrong with the episode. The battle strategy at the beginning was ridiculous. The Dothraki were the first line of defense. The red witch comes out of nowhere and lights up their sickles but what does that do if they were not carrying dragon glass, the weapon of choice for destroying the undead? Second, why were the Unsullied in front of the burning trench and not behind it protecting the castle? And Ayra the one killing the Knight King? Jon Snow seemed destined for that task since it was part of his character arc. And how did Samwell survive yet Jorah die?
The other problem was the season wasn’t long enough to allow more character development for Danaerys. Her descent into madness seemed too quick. It may have been part of her arc, but it could have been handled without seeming rushed. The battle at King’s Landing was even more rushed, with Drogon evading and destroying a multitude of scorpions, allowing him and his queen to turn the city into smoldering rubble.
Some scenes in the final episode seemed like fan service, particularly Samwell presenting Tyrion with the “Song of Ice and Fire” a chronicle of happenings since the fall of King Rober, not to mention the entire small council. Putting the greedy Bronn on it as Master of Coin is a recipe for disaster.
The high point was having the remaining Stark children becoming free agents and having a satisfying end to their stories--Sansa becoming Queen of Winterfell, Ayra going to see what’s beyond the west, Jon going beyond the wall to see what’s up north, .. while many viewers felt the writing had gone south.
In sum, the story felt rushed, but it wasn’t the epic disaster that diehard fans with a media platform thought it was.

Dorothy West
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dorothy West (June 2, 1907 – August 16, 1998) was a novelist and short story writer during the time of the Harlem Renaissance. She is best known for her novel The Living Is Easy, as well as many other short stories and essays, about the life of an upper-class black family.
Early years
West was born in Boston on June 2, 1907, to Isaac Christopher West, who was formerly enslaved and later became a successful businessman, and Rachel Pegues Benson, one of 22 children. West reportedly wrote her first story at the age of seven. Her first short story, "Promise and Fulfillment", was published in the Boston Post when she was 14 years old, and she won several local writing competitions. West attended Girls' Latin school, now called Boston Latin Academy, graduating at 16, and went on to Boston University and the Columbia University School of Journalism.
In 1926, she tied for second place in a writing contest sponsored by Opportunity, a journal published by the National Urban League, with her short story "The Typewriter". The person West tied with was future novelist Zora Neale Hurston.
Between 1928 and 1930, some of West's other early writings were published in the Saturday Evening Quill, a short-lived annual literary magazine that grew out of a literary club of the same name, of which West was a founding member.
Harlem Renaissance
Shortly before winning the Opportunity writing contest, West moved to Harlem with her cousin, the poet Helene Johnson. There West met other writers of the Harlem Renaissance, including Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and the novelist Wallace Thurman. West was quoted as saying in 1995: "We didn't know it was the Harlem Renaissance, because we were all young and all poor." Hughes gave West the nickname of "The Kid", by which she was known during her time in Harlem, and she was among a group of African Americans who travelled with him on a trip to Russia in 1932 for a film about American race relations. The film never came to fruition, though she and Hughes remained in Russia for a year.
Great Depression
During the Great Depression, West's principal contribution to the Harlem Renaissance was to publish the magazine Challenge, which she founded in 1934 with $40. She also published the magazine's successor, New Challenge. Among the works published were Richard Wright's groundbreaking essay "Blueprint for Negro Writing", together with writings by Margaret Walker and Ralph Ellison.
In her later years West had become aware that, up until the Harlem Renaissance, it was almost impossible for a black female to sustain a career in writing. She was in fact one of the first female writers of color to have her works published. This later served as a permanent reminder that African-American women were not always recognized. West had explained in an interview that, due to the publishers' lack of interest, the audience never had a chance to be present. She also attributed her spark of inspiration, to her aunt's subscription to the NAACP's magazine Crisis. Two years before she died, West won an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Literary works
After both magazines folded because of insufficient financing, West worked for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project until the mid-1940s. During this time she wrote a number of short stories for the New York Daily News, where she was the first black writer published. She then moved to Oak Bluffs on Martha's Vineyard, where she wrote her first novel, The Living Is Easy. Featuring an ironic sense of humor unique to West's style, the story chronicles the life of a young southern girl in pursuit of the upper class lifestyle. Published in 1948, the novel was well received critically but did not sell many copies.
In the subsequent four decades, West worked as a journalist, primarily writing for a small newspaper on Martha's Vineyard. In 1948, she started a weekly column about Oak Bluffs people, events, and nature. In 1982 The Feminist Press brought The Living Is Easy back into print, giving new attention to West and her role in the Harlem Renaissance; she was included in the 1992 anthology Daughters of Africa. As a result of this renewed attention, at the age of 85 West finally finished a second novel, entitled The Wedding, which portrayed the message that while race may be a false distinction, love knows no bounds. Published to acclaim in 1995 — the Publishers Weekly review stated: "West's first novel in 45 years is a triumph." — the novel was a best-seller and resulted in the publication of a collection of West's short stories and reminiscences called The Richer, the Poorer. Oprah Winfrey turned the novel into a two-part television miniseries, The Wedding.
Death
West died on August 16, 1998, at the age of 91, at the New England Medical Center in Boston. Though her cause of death was never officially released, it is suspected that she died of natural causes. At her death, she was one of the last surviving members of the Harlem Renaissance. When asked what she wanted her legacy to be, she responded with "That I hung in there. That I didn't say I can't."

Why did Elon Musk just buy a million trees?
Last night, Elon Musk bought a million trees for a cool $1 million, and it wasn't some mad luxury purchase you might expect. If you haven't been paying attention to YouTube for the last few days, you're probably wondering what this "financially illiquid" billionaire is doing. The answer is, perhaps for once, a mildly positive story about the power of YouTubers to help start a project that'll do a little bit to combat climate change.
What's TeamTrees?
TeamTrees is a project launched by a small group of high-profile YouTubers to raise money for the Arbor Day Foundation. It aims to raise $20 million by the end of 2019 to bankroll the planting of 20 million new trees between now and the end of 2022. At the time of publication, it has collected $7.9 million to plant, uh, 7.9 million trees, which will be planted across all of the continents of the Earth, bar Antarctica, for obvious reasons.
Why trees?
It's part of a wider strategy to mitigate the effects of anthropogenic climate change and reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Earlier this year, a group of researchers said that a global reforestation effort, on 1.7 billion hectares of currently-unused land, could trap up to 25 percent of the CO2 in the current atmospheric pool. A total of around 1 trillion trees would need to be planted in short order, without encroaching on land used to graze cattle or grow crops.
Ok, sounds legit, will donate 1M trees
— Treelon (@elonmusk) October 29, 2019
Trees, like almost all plants, consume carbon dioxide, sunlight and water to produce glucose and oxygen. And the carbon forms a large proportion of their mass, making sustainable tree planting a valuable way of pulling CO2 out of the atmosphere.
Research out of North Carolina State University says that the average tree can pull in 48 pounds of CO2 in a year, with that figure reaching closer to 1 ton of carbon after 40 years. At that estimate, 20 million trees could consume 960 million tonnes of CO2, or around 2.6 percent of the world's emissions in 2018. Although tree planting is not a magic bullet, it can help, especially when deforestation is becoming a hot button issue after the Amazon fires.
Who is behind it?
Spearheading TeamTrees is Jimmy Donaldson. Better known online as MrBeast, Donaldson made a name for himself doing stunts for his channel. His eye-catching antics began as endurance tasks, like counting to 100,000 across the space of two days or watching paint dry. As his profile (and earnings) increased, his videos turned toward covering acts of eye-grabbing philanthropy, which helped raise his profile, and his earning potential.
Reddit really wants me to plant 20 million trees. pic.twitter.com/peGsq3eBjO
— MrBeast (@MrBeastYT) May 23, 2019
That included buying a homeless person a home, giving a friend $100,000 to spend in an hour and touch-the-truck-style challenges for expensive items. Donaldson's stunts have earned him a large following, and he has more than 25 million subscribers on YouTube. When he passed the 20 million number, a number of fans began suggesting that he plant the same number of trees for his next stunt. This snowballed among other high-profile YouTubers, and TeamTrees was born.
youtube
And who has donated?
Can confirm it's legit. And we'll match the next million to keep #TeamTrees growing🌲
— B🎃🎃Tube (@YouTube) October 30, 2019
Obviously, Musk is the highest-profile donator, but he's not the only one. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey contributed $150,000, while music producer Alan Walker contributed $100,001. Donaldson himself has donated $100,002 and $100,000 to the cause, with the split giving him third and fifth position on the "Most Trees" donation leaderboard. And YouTube announced that it would "match the next million" donations made via its platform.
Who else has gotten involved?
A number of other high-profile channels posted their own videos at the same time that Donaldson's video went live. Veritasium, SmarterEveryday, Mark Rober, Brady Haran, Linus Tech Tips and The Infographics Show all pointed their followers towards the cause with videos tailored towards their audiences. Science channel Veritasium, for example, compiled a pair of videos about how trees work, while Linus Tech Tips devised an impractical but fun machine to automate planting them. Since then, a number of other high-profile YouTubers have signed on, including Alan Becker, DanPlan and Ninja of Fortnite fame.
OK, sounds legit, can I donate?
Yes, you can head to the TeamTrees website and offer up as much as you would like to, here. Although, if you want to game the system for good, you could donate through one of many channels involved to ensure that YouTube maxes out on its $1 million pledge.

“THE PODDER” saves the earth!
A new invention named “THE PODDER” might be the invention to save us from the impending doom caused by deforestation. It is a drone created by the innovators Andries Louw and Andrew walker, that shoots out two seeds per second at velocities of between 150 and 300 meters per second. The drones will be loaded with special seeds that look like black paintball bullets, made by a company called AIRSEED.

While this is not the first-time air planting was executed, though it was the first time it was effective. DRONESEED was the first company to come up with the innovation and the reason why it failed is because of the use of heavy equipment, it also had low germination rate which defeated the purpose of the whole project.

The main reason for AIRSEED’s success is because of its different approach to various problems. the AIRSEED products are made from a soil additive called biochar to make them lighter. the highly compressed charcoal is the by-product of the thermochemical conversion of biomass, by compressing the seeds into biochar, the pods become a natural fertilizer.
“Without the seeds the entire project would mean nothing…We had to come up with a solution for the payload that was light; that was viscus, in other words smooth; that was durable and would not break on impact, and that protected the seeds from animals.”

The duo believe that a fleet of their drones could plant up to a hundred thousand trees a year. They estimated that a team of two flying two drones can plant around 40000 seeds into the ground in 10 minutes a day.it is said that a team of 4 can operate 8 drones which could potentially plant up to 160000 trees a day.
This invention came to light after the famous YouTube stars “Mark Rober” and “MRBEAST” started a tree planting campaign to compromise for the losses of the recent Amazon rainforest fire that took place 2 months ago.

YouTube star MrBeast wants to plant 20M trees, so Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey and more are helping
youtube
YouTube star MrBeast wanted to do something big to celebrate reaching 20 million subscribers, so his fans challenged him to plant 20 million trees.
He’s raised more than $8.2 million in just a few days with donations from Elon Musk, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and his legion of fans.
MrBeast, who’s real name is Jimmy Donaldson, is known for his random and often elaborate acts of generosity and stunts, such as building a mansion out of cardboard and going through the same drive-thru a thousand times.
He and fellow YouTuber Mark Rober have partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to raise the money and get the trees in the ground.
More than 300,000 people have made donations since the TeamTrees campaign launched on Friday afternoon, Arbor Day Foundation spokesman Danny Cohn told CNN.
Elon Musk, of Tesla and SpaceX fame, gave $1 million and even changed his Twitter name to “Treelon.”
Dorsey gave $150,000, Norwegian DJ and record producer Alan Walker gave $100,001 and MrBeast gave $100,002 to his own cause.
“The average person can’t afford $150,000 or a million, but we’ve been getting spikes of between 5 and 20 trees every time a large donation comes in and every tree matters, every single donor is important,” Cohn said.
The Arbor Day Foundation will work with its local partners around the world to plant one tree for each dollar they raise.
It will take time to get the right trees to the right places — and dig 20 million holes — but Cohn said they expect to have all the trees planted by 2022, which is its 150th anniversary.
“We really want to make sure they are being placed where they can do the most good for the Earth,” he said.
Cohn said that the big celebrity donations have inspired young people to give at a rate that they’ve never seen before. “This is just another fact of this generation seeing the importance of getting trees in the ground to help the future of the earth,” he said.
The Arbor Day Foundation says that 100 million trees absorb 8 million tons of carbon over their lifetime, which is the equivalent of taking 6.2 million cars off the road for one year.
The trees will also reduce water runoff and filter pollutions and microparticles from the atmosphere. They are expected to generate $32.9 billion in environmental benefits.

Tuesday 5.. May 1835: SH:7/ML/E/18/0030

No kiss. very fine morning F48 ½° at 7 25 am out at 7 ¾ - a few minutes minutes with Charles H- and then off to High Roydes - found Holt at breakfast - going this morning to settle about 200 DW of coal (upper and lower bed) he had just bought of Waddington adjoining Mr Walker Priestley’s coal - will come to Shibden at 11 am tomorrow - the Machans cannot agree about the money they are to have for their coal; but Holt is sure of the coal - thinks I may get more water by driving down towards Dove house asked for his vote - he had said he would not vote at all - I said we would talk about it - home at 9 - breakfast till 10 – some time with my father and Marian. Had my hair pinched and dressed Mr Dearden, commonly called colonel, came about 11 ½ for about ¾ hour - had sandwiches and wine - both of us very civil to each other - apologized for the liberty I had taken in sending for him - shewed the plans and explained - he seemed delighted with the whole thing - said it would be a great advantage for the town - a good Inn and large handsome room were much wanted - I said the estate was £5000 and I expected the cost would be £600 - and the interest of this even at 4 p.c. Thomas about John Clarke and to Mr George cooper about the chesnut fillies and wrote note to Mr Bateman enclosing £35 for the fillies alias ponies which took me till 11 3/4 pm at which hour F53° - fine day - Letter this morning from Mr Jonathan Gray and from Mr Thomas - letter this afternoon from M- and letter this evening from Monsieur Gaudin Geneva - particulars of which to be given by and by - Long in getting into bed on account of cousin.
