Lost Albums: The Doors - Celebration of the Lizard

The Doors - Celebration Of The Lizard: So hätte das Albumcover aussehen können! Die Veranstaltungsbranche ist im Moment im vorübergehenden Zwangsruhestand und bescheidet sich zumindest von Künstlerseite derzeit vorrangig auf Livestreams. Grund genug, mal einen detaillierteren Blick in die Musikgeschichte zu werfen und uns einem Thema zu widmen, das einige interessante Aspekte offenbart: Die unveröffentlichten Alben, über die trotz allem so manches Mysterium im Umlauf ist. Musikgeschichtlich betrachtet, bedürfen die vorgestellten Bands eigentlich keiner genaueren Betrachtung, da es wenig gibt, was über sie noch nicht gesagt, geschrieben, gesendet worden ist. Wohl aber gibt es von diesen berühmten Bands Alben, die als work in progress angekündigt wurden, dann aber aus unterschiedlichsten Gründen nie erschienen. Manche Alben erschienen in stark veränderter Form unter anderen Namen (zum Beispiel, weil die Plattenfirma darauf bestand); in anderen Fällen fanden einzelne Songs des ursprünglich geplanten Projektes ihren Weg auf spätere Alben und wieder andere Alben wurden komplett auf Eis gelegt. Lost Album: The Doors - Celebration of the Lizard   1968 gingen The Doors in die legendären TTG Studios nach Hollywood, um ihr drittes Album aufzunehmen. Ein klitzekleines Problem ergab sich aber gleich vom Fleck weg: Man hatte schlichtweg keine Songs! Die ersten beiden Alben setzten sich aus Songs zusammen, die Jim Morrison, Ray Manzarek, Robbie Krieger und John Densmore geschrieben hatten, noch bevor sie entdeckt wurden und so war man zum ersten Mal in der Situation, aus dem Stehgreif neue Songs schreiben zu müssen, auch, um vertraglichen Passus gerecht zu werden. Zwickmühle!

The one and only Jim Morrison. Der fand, dass sich aus seinem persönlichen Poesiealbum ein surreales Stück namens »Celebration of the Lizard« ganz besonders eignete.   Schreibblockade? Jim macht das schon! Da es Manzarek, Krieger und Densmore nicht besonders gut gelang, neue Songs zu schreiben, kam ihnen Morrisons Einfall zupass und so machte man sich daran, das epische Stück musikalisch zu untermalen. Praktischer Nebeneffekt: Der Track eignete sich dazu, eine komplette LP-Seite einzunehmen und so wurden die kreativen Engpässe der anderen (nur sechs Songs konnten in annehmbarer Form fertig gestellt werden) nicht mehr so negativ gesehen. Und da begannen auch schon die Probleme. »Celebration of the Lizard« war ein viel zu komplexes Stück, weswegen die Länge per se schon mal auf gut 17 Minuten gekürzt wurde (was erahnen lässt, wie lang die Nummer eigentlich werden sollte) und Produzent Paul Rothchild war ob des fehlenden kommerziellen Anreizes überhaupt gar kein Fan des Konzeptes.   Paul Rothchild: Spielverderber oder Retter? Trotzdem fertigte Rothchild für die Band eine Dubplatte an, deren Tracklist so aussah: A-Seite: 1.) Five To One (4:28) 2.) My Wild Life (2:35) 3.) Spanish Caravan (2:59) 4.) Wintertime Love (1:54) 5.) We Could Be So Good Together (2:25) 6.) Unknown Soldier (3:25)   B-Seite: 1.) Celebration Of The Lizard (17:07) 1.1.) Lions In The Street 1.2.) Wake Up! 1.3.) Little Game 1.4.) The Hill Dwellers 1.5.) Not To Touch The Earth 1.6.) Names Of The Kingdom 1.7.) The Palace of Exile Danach schaffte es Rothchild, die Band von ihrem »Celebration Of The Lizard«-Konzept abzubringen, was aber wiederum einige Mißstimmung in die heiligen Hallen der TTG Studios brachte. Neben Rothchilds immer schlimmer werdenden Pedanterie, die den Bandmitgliedern zunehmend auf die Nerven ging (er verlangte x-fache Takes von Songs, die der Band zufolge eigentlich keiner Verbesserung mehr bedurft hätten), ging auch Morrisons Geduld zuende. Persönlich verletzt davon, dass sein episches Stück von Rothchild abgelehnt wurde, revoltierte der charismatische Frontmann und suchte sein Heil immer öfter und immer extremer auf dem Grund einer Schnapsflasche. Er ließ seine Bandkollegen an manchen Tagen entweder stundenlang warten, bis er sie mit seiner Anwesenheit beehrte und erschien an anderen Tagen erst überhaupt gar nicht. Die Moral innerhalb des Doors-Teams verbesserte sich nicht gerade, als ihre Plattenfirma Elektra Records, ohne Rücksprache mit der Band zu halten, im März 1968 die erste Auskopplung »Unknown Soldier/We Could Be So Good Together« veröffentlichte. Die A-Seite, die sich inhaltlich kritisch und sehr graphisch mit dem Vietnamkrieg auseinander setzte, wurde von vielen Radiosendern boykottiert. Höher als Platz 39 chartete die Single nicht, was für Doors-Verhältnisse nicht mehr den eigenen Ansprüchen entsprach.   The Doors - Celebration of the Lizard: Das Ende! Frustriert und auch ein Stückweit resigniert, warfen die Doors ihr »Celebrations Of The Lizard«-Konzept nun vollends über Bord. Der Song »Waiting For The Sun« wurde aufgenommen und so wurde auch ein passender Titel für das Albumprojekt gefunden. Bezeichnend für die Orientierungslosigkeit, die sich in der Band zu jener Zeit breit machte, wurde der Song erst zwei Jahre später auf dem Album Morrison Hotel veröffentlicht, der Albumname für das aktuelle Projekt aber behalten. Aus dem epischen »Celebrations Of The Lizard« wurde lediglich die »Not To Touch The Earth«-Passage übernommen und zusätzlich wurde das Album mit den Songs »Yes, The River Knows", »Summer's Almost Gone« und der Doppelsingle »Hello, I Love You/Love Street« (schon 1965 von Morrison geschrieben und bis dato als unwichtig erachtet) aufgefüllt.   "Klassiker-Album" oder "Füllmaterial-Müllhalde"? Das Stück »Celebration Of The Lizard« wurde allerdings später veröffentlicht, unter anderem als 17:09 Minuten lange »An Experiment/Work in Progress«-Version auf der 40th Anniversary Edition von »Waiting For The Sun«. Und so wurde aus einem ursprünglich sehr ambitionierten Albumkonzept eine Platte, die zwar mit Filler-Material ergänzt wurde und dementsprechend uneinheitlich wirkte, mit Songs wie »Hello, I Love You«, »Summer's Almost Gone« und dem treibenden, stampfenden »Five To One« allerdings drei absolute Doors-Klassiker erhält. Der Platz und die Bewertung von »Waiting For The Sun« im Gesamtwerk der Band ist allerdings selbst unter treuen Fans bis heute umstritten. Fvzz Popvli - Magna Fvzz

Rome trio Fvzz Popvli indulge in the somewhat metallic trend of using the letter v as a u, but given their Latin heritage, it’s relatively acceptable. Their music is an enjoyable romp through heavy, hostile Psychedelic haze, and second album Magna Fvzz (Heavy Psych Sounds) offers up black comedy, snarling attitudes and sinister twists in equal measure. Opener ‘Let It Die…’ sees a blistering riff and rumbling drums undercut by a distant, atonal shout from vocalist Francesco Pucci which tickles and terrifies in equal measure. Rumbling bass and some wonderfully emotive leadwork reminiscent of Robbie Krieger light up the path to the coda of this groove machine, and decorate the start of the ensuing, irresistible ‘Napoleon’. That dark holler is extremely effective, chilling and offsetting the heady warmth of the instrumentation. The tracks here are given a deliciously retro feel by a primitive, claustrophobic production which still manages to give a distant resonance to Pucci’s vocal. ‘The Deal’ is an Occult Blues rattle infused with a sneering Punk sensibility, while ‘Get Me’ begins in slower, minimalist fashion and carries the glorious feel of underproduced Indie recordings of the eighties. As the track builds, riff and lead guitar drill through the brain like an army of wasps. MAGNA FVZZ by Fvzz Popvli ‘Rvmpletum’ is dictated by Datio Palatio’s boneshaking bassline and a mysterious drumbeat, the filthy crawl howled over in the wounded, rebellious manner of PiL-era John Lydon. ‘Cherry Bowl’ oscillates through the cosmos on a real greaser of a low rider: the sound dirty, the “Wake up” refrain menacingly spat forth. The closing title track is something of an epic, the early movements carrying something of a Joy Division feel thanks largely to Palatio’s fluid bass and only lifted by some manic wah-wah effects. As electronic loops and weight come to the fore the looming, spectral sound counteracts the sporadic bluster, creating a swelling ebb and flow which finally explodes into a monolithic show of power. Magna Fvzz lacks a little of the gravitas usually required to make such albums true contenders but there’s something refreshing about it; a desire to express different influences and meld them into a startling, gripping whole. In doing so Fvzz Popvli have created an entertaining, absorbing set which deserves more than the odd revisit. 7.0/10.0 PAUL QUINN Read the full article
