15 Gennaio 1919: Karl Liebknecht e Rosa Luxemburg, leader della Spartakusbund (Lega di Spartaco), frazione estremista dell'SPD, Partito Socialdemocratico di Germania (in tedesco: Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands), sono arrestati, interrogati e uccisi da membri dei Freikorps. Negli stessi giorni, i Freikorps hanno posto fine al tentativo di rivoluzione portato avanti dagli spartachisti in seguito alla provocatoria rimozione del capo della polizia di Berlino, il socialista Emil Eichhorn. Il governo non ordina direttamente l'esecuzione dei due, ma esponenti del governo sono a conoscenza della cattura e dell'esecuzione dei due rivoluzionari, tra questi molto probabilmente anche Gustav Noske, responsabile militare del governo, che nei giorni precedenti aveva ordinato di monitorare gli spostamenti di Liebknecht. Il corpo di questi, ucciso nei pressi dell'Hotel Eden di Berlino, sede della Guardia a cavallo, l'unità dei Freikorps che ha arrestato i due rivoluzionari, è poi portato all'obitorio nei pressi dello zoo cittadino come “cadavere non identificato”. La salma di Rosa Luxemburg è invece gettata nel canale Landwehr. Il giorno stesso della loro esecuzione, Liebknecht e Luxemburg, così scrivono in un articolo per il Die Rote Fahne (La bandiera rossa), il giornale voce del movimento spartachista: Liebknecht: “I vinti di oggi saranno i vincitori di domani... sia che noi saremo o non saremo vivi quando ciò sarà raggiunto. Il nostro programma andrà avanti: Il nostro programma vivrà: dominerà il mondo dell'umanità liberata. Nonostante tutto!” Luxemburg: “O tu protettore della legge! Il tuo "ordine" è costruito sulla sabbia. Entro domani la rivoluzione si alzerà di nuovo in piedi e, per il tuo orrore, annuncerà con una fanfara di trombe: lo ero. Io sono. Io sarò!” ENGLISH - 15 January 1919: Karl Liebknecht and Rosa Luxemburg, leader of Spartakusbund (Spartacus League), the extremist faction of the SPD, Social Democratic Party of Germany, are arrested, tortured, interrogated and killed by members of the Freikorps. The Freikorps were, in the same days, used by the government to crush the Spartacist uprising caused by the provocative arrest of the Chief of the police of Berlin, the socialist Emil Eichhorn. The execution of the twos is not directly ordered by the government, but the capture and the execution are known by some of its exponents, especially Gustav Noske, military head of the government, who, in the previous days, had ordered to monitor the whereabouts of Liebknecht. Liebknecht is killed near the Hotel Eden in Berlin, HQ of the Horse Guard, the unit of the Freikorps who arrested them. His body is then taken to the morgue near the city zoo as an "unidentified corpse". The corpse of Rosa Luxemburg is thrown into the Landwehr canal. The same day, the twos have written an article for the Die Rote Fahne (The Red Flag), the newspaper, organ of the Spartacus League: Liebknecht: Today's vanquished will be tomorrow's victors... whether or not we shall still be alive when this is achieved. Our programme will live on: it will dominate the world of liberated humanity. In spite of all! Luxemburg: O you thick-skulled upholder of the law! Your 'order' is built on sand. By tomorrow the Revolution will rise clanking to his feet again and to your horror will announce with a fanfare of trumpets: I was. I am. I shall be!
