A Year in Review : Jamie's 2023
Welcome to our look back on Jamie’s 2023! It’s been a tough year for the entertainment industry in general, with the SAG-AFTRA strike taking place from July all the way through to November, and we know that this impacted Jamie as he chose to take a stand along with many of his other acting peers. Yet despite this, Jamie has accomplished a lot in this year & it’s time to look back at some of the highlights!
February saw the release of Beyond Paradise on BBC1. Jamie played Archie Hughes, an ex flame of Martha’s who joined forces with her in getting her new business in Shipton Abbott up and running. Unfortunately for Archie, Martha had moved back to Shipton Abbott with her fiance, Humphrey and the two didn’t quite see eye to eye. This was such a fun role for Jamie and a complete joy to watch.
April was an exciting month which saw Jamie celebrating his 50th birthday and as always we marked the occasion with a birthday video which many of you took part in! He also travelled over to Cannes to premiere Cannes Confidential at the 6th Canneseries Festival alongside co-stars Lucie Lucas and Tamara Marthe.
May saw Jamie treading the boards once again in Uncle Glen’s Menagerie at the Arcola Theatre which we were lucky enough to go and watch. Such an incredible evening of ad-lib comedy and superb acting from an incredible group of actors and comedians. As ever we want to thank Jamie for his time that he spent chatting with us before and after the show too.
In June finally came the UK release of Cannes Confidential on Acorn TV and we LOVED Harry King from the moment we met him. Such a fun, easy watching show and such a complex character in which Jamie got to show off all sides of his talent, from comedy through to some really beautiful emotional moments, especially in scenes with his on-screen daughter Emilie who was played by his real life daughter Ava in a brilliant debut performance. June also saw the release of Trader over in Russia - a project which Jamie filmed alongside his amazing wife Kerry all the way back in 2019! And of course, we cannot forget the epic BSG reunion which took place when Jamie headed over to Phoenix Fan Fusion. #SoSayWeAll
July brought some incredible news as Jamie announced that he was taking part in Kenny Logan’s RWC Challenge - an epic 700 mile cycle & walking challenge from Edinburgh to Paris, all to raise money for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Throughout July all the way through to October when the challenge took place, Jamie was training hard to ensure that he was ready for the mammoth challenge ahead.
August saw the release of Who Is Erin Carter? on Netflix - a twisty, fast paced thriller from the mind of Strike Back writer, Jack Lothian. Jamie played DI Jim Armstrong, a mysterious figure from Erin’s past. Though he was only in two episodes. We LOVED this character and with the series being left open ended, we really hope we get to see more of Jim in the future.
In September, Jamie attended the National Television Awards alongside his Beyond Paradise cast mates as the show was nominated for Best New Drama (which sadly it didn’t win).
And onto October which was such an important month for Jamie as all the training paid off when he & so many other incredible people including Kenny & Gabby Logan, Ally McCoist, Jason Fox and Jimmy Nesbitt started their gruelling trek on bike and foot from Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh to the Stade de France in Paris. This challenge was hugely life changing for the whole team (as well as a whole lot of fun!) and they smashed their target of raising £555,555 between them for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. We were honoured to be able to cheer them all on for a small part of this journey when we saw them off in York on day 3 and welcomed them back as they ended the day at the beautiful Belvoir Castle. To top off an incredible achievement, Jamie was also asked to become an ambassador for the foundation - a role we know that he will embody so well.
October also saw Jamie joining Cameo, giving fans the opportunity to get a personalised video message from him (which we of course took advantage of also!) and to round off the month, Cannes Confidential aired on French TV, renamed Cannes Police Criminalle, with the entire show having been dubbed into French by the original cast.
November saw Jamie as a guest on fellow RWC Challenge team mate Archie Curzon’s podcast, The Rig Biz Pod, which was a brilliantly funny interview.
And to round the year off, December gave us announcements of not one but two new projects to look forward to in 2024! Firstly, Heavyweight, starring and produced by Jamie’s Marcella co-star Nicholas Pinnock, will be a gritty London drama focusing on the mental state of a boxer and his cornermen backstage before the fight as the clock ticks down.
With the strike finally over, Jamie travelled to Bulgaria to film Strangers alongside Sienna Guillory, Emmett J Scanlan and Jon Voight. The project is described as an action thriller and will be released in 2024 on Paramount Plus.
As well as these two exciting announcements, AKA Blackbird, the brainchild of BSG alumni James Callis was finally released as an audiobook! With so many former BSG stars taking part in it, including Jamie and Kerry, it’s definitely not one to be missed.
And there you have it! Despite some difficult times, Jamie really did achieve a lot this year and with 2 projects already to look forward to, we can’t wait to see what else 2024 has in store.

King Falls AM - Episode 9: Jack in the Box Jesus

Summary: September 1, 2015 - An alleged sighting of the Lord & Savior at a downtown fast food restaurant has the residents of King Falls ready for deliverance, meanwhile Sammy & Ben try to navigate the flood waters of this revelation.

Ladies and gentlemen, I promise you that while it is a terrible inconvenience that our modern electronics are out— this is not the end of the world. It could be a refreshing change of pace! Good morning guys and dolls, you’re listening to King Falls AM—
Ben

Sammy
And this is day 13 of what has been dubbed the King Falls Electrolocaust.
Ben
This has easily been the hardest two weeks of my professional career.
Sammy
It has been tough, but Ben and I want to thank you, and everyone out there listening, for the continuing support of the show.
Ben
We got another doozy of a show for you tonight, King Falls. During hour two, we’ll be interviewing Maria Chandler, manager of the King Falls Apple store, and speaking about the effects the shut down has had on business.
Sammy
As well as fielding your calls and talking about whatever’s clever this evening.
Ben
I miss computers, Sammy. I miss the schedule. Our automated systems, my alarm clock. I’ve went through three the legal pads in two weeks!
Sammy
[sympathetic] I know, buddy.
Ben
I would literally watch Channel 13 if given the chance.
Sammy
Wow. That’s saying a lot.
Ben
[softly] I need my life back.
Sammy
King Falls, how are you taking the modern electronic shut down of 2015? Are you refreshed? Reliving the mid-90s? Or— are you falling apart like our dear Ben Arnold?
Ben
I’d listen to boy bands, to have a working smartphone. I’d wear, puka shell necklaces and sell my pog collection,[1] if you give me five minutes with my email.
Sammy
Look on the bright side, Ben. You’re spending all your free time down at the library, and I haven’t called you out on it!
Ben
That’s calling me out on it.
Sammy
Eh-Well- and you know it’s nice hearing the birds tweeting instead of @kingfallsam. I’m not saying I don’t miss it but, I’m enjoying this a little bit.
Ben
♫It’s tearing up my heart when I’m with yoouu♫[2]
Sammy
The references are not gonna bring back your goods.
Ben
[hurt] Dammit Sammy, let’s just take a call from our jury-rigged phone system.
[bg music being provided by Chet’s record player]
Sammy
You’re live with Sammy and Ben.
Cynthia
Yeeaah, I wanna talk about the outages.
Sammy
Cynthia Higgenbaum, ladies and gents. How are you doing during this electronic crisis?
Cynthia
[blissful] I feel the warm embrace of the chastity belt that’s been placed on society. I’m relieved, de-stressed, marvelous!
Ben
*chuckling* Whoa, heh, that’s- that’s a heck of a change!
Cynthia
[suddenly aggressive] What are you trying to say, Ben?
Sammy
It’s just you’re usually- you’ve been a little… pessimistic in the past.
Cynthia
[mostly calm again] Ohhh, I still have problems; I’m full up with issues. But right now, I don’t have to worry about what websites my husband is perusing, what brain-dead TV my kids are watching— I’m at peace! It’s just me and my harlequin novels. Plus, with Jesus back and all—
Ben
[jokingly suggestive] 50 Shades of Cynthia
Cynthia
[angrily] Don’t be filthy Ben Arnold! I Know Your Mother!
Sammy
I-I’m sorry, Cynthia— did you just say that Jesus is back?
Cynthia
[gossipy tone] Have you guys not heard the news?
Ben
Is she talking about Jesus Jesus?
Cynthia
There’s only one.
Sammy
Wellll, I think Mexico would disagree, but please tell us why you think Jesus—
Cynthia
[snappy] I don’t think Sammy, I know! [softer] Earlier this evening, he was spotted glowing and speaking in tongues at Jack in the Box.[3]
Ben
The one off Main Street or Red Oak Avenue?
Cynthia
Ew, nobody does to Red Oak.
Sammy
[softly] Jack-in-the-Box-Jesus.
Cynthia
Oh, Hell no! I will not participate in that blasphemy. You’re gonna get smited—
Sammy
Oh, I- I mean- I wasn’t- I’m sorry, I’m not meaning to, uh—
Cynthia
Tell it to Satan! In Hell, Sammy! [hangs up forcefully]
[dial tone]
Ben
This is big.
Sammy
[slightly reluctant] If you or someone you know has had a sighting of *clears throat, Ben laughs* Jack in the Box Jesus please give us a call. Uh, 424-279-3858
Ben
You’re on King Falls AM.
Deputy Troy
Now I know what you’re thinking: how could the second coming of God’s only son happen and ol’ Troy here didn’t clue you in.
Ben
Not what I was thinking.
Sammy
What do you know Troy?
Deputy Troy
Well I got a suspicious persons call out at ol’ Yack[sic] in the Box around 9. So, I hit the lights and cruised over to see what the fuss was about. And lo and behold, back by the dumpster with a mess of people looking on— there he was.
Sammy
Now, are you really telling us that— [still reluctant] you saw, or, you believe you saw the son of God and the King of Kings bangin around outside the Jack In The Box?
Deputy Troy
Well, he was a man. Somebody’s son, no doubt. Bearded. Good lookin’, if-if you’re into that sort of thing. He had a robe on—
Ben
[cutting in]We can solve this right now. Was he white or was he black?
Deputy Troy
He was more of a greenish color. Like a glow really.
Sammy
The man had an aura around him.
Deputy Troy
It was shinier than a damn Fukushima foxhound, fellas. Like, I felt a need to put on the old aviators, but I- I didn’t want to be cliché.
Sammy
Alright, Troy. So, work with us here; you’re in the back of the Jack in the Box, there’s a uh, a Jesus-type guy—
Deputy Troy
Just-a-ramblin’ on.
Ben
Speaking in— tongues?
Deputy Troy
Speaking in somethin. The last time I heard gibberish like that was comin’ from the back of my Chevy with Shell Snyder’s daughter.
Sammy
So what happened next?
Deputy Troy
Well a group of looky-loos had descended, as I said, and since it was only me, there was no perimeter set up yet. So I start ta approach this glowing Christ and somebody— Roy Higgins if you gotta know/— hollered out “It’s Jesus!” and the whole parking lot just went bonkers!
Ben
Well, di-did you speak to the guy?
Deputy Troy
Damn skippy. I told Roy that this was official police biz. And he shouldn’t be squawling around like a little baby.
Ben
No, Jack in the Box Jesus.
Deputy Troy
Oh, well no. I- I turned around and he was gone. Split right off into the woods, I suspect.
Sammy
Did you follow him?
Deputy Troy
Sammy. So you’re tellin me that you’d follow a 6-foot-tall and glowing perp into the woods??
Sammy
[muttered] Point taken.
Ben
So any other sightings?
Deputy Troy
Well, not as of yet. But there were so many people they could’a had a revival in that parkin’ lot. So I’m guessin’ that’s how word spread so quickly. And without internet, too? That’s pretty damn impressive.
Sammy
Is there an APB out or anything?
Deputy Troy
For what, dilly-dallying around with a jumbo jack? He wasn’t doin nothin bad. Just acting a fool— Lord forgive me— where he shouldn’t’a been.
Ben
And glowing.
Deputy Troy
That’s right.
Sammy
Well, please let us know if get any more info on this, Troy. We’d appreciate it.
Deputy Troy
You bet. I’ll be sure to keep you boys and the listenin’ public informed. But if you should happen to stumble upon Jesus? Do not approach, bother or pester. You just call up Ol’ Deputy Troy.
[hangs up]
Ben

Sammy

[voice is soft and creepy, like you expect from a guy who offers kids candy from the back of a van]

Deputy Troy
[through megaphone] Carl, turn off your ignition. You are too close to the school zone.
Carl
I gotta go! Catch ya later [tires squealing]
Ben
[desperate, in bg] The mic!
[sirens fade out]
Sammy
… Never again.
Ben
I tried to tell you.
Sammy
I know. Let’s never speak about this.
Ben
[whispering] I need a shower.
Sammy
*sigh* …Moving forward, we were just talking about a sighting that happened a few hours ago around the 9 o’clock hour, just off Main Street. It seems quite a few people believe that we may be experiencing a religious phenomenon. Perhaps the second coming of–
Ben
[slightly gruff impression] “Don’t call it a comeback, I’ve been here for years!”[4]
Sammy
*chuckles* Right, let’s go to the phone lines.
Ben
[happily] That was good though right?
Sammy
It was good. Good evening, you’re live on King Falls AM.
Reverend Hawthorne
Ask and ye shall receive! King Falls-uh. It is the gooD Reverend Xavier “Right. With. Gaawwd-uh” Hawthorne.
Ben
Reverend Hawthorne? Are you back in town?
Reverend Hawthorne
[speaking over Ben] The One and Only, and we are turnin’ the wagons arounD as we speaK-uh. And we’re headin’ back to my flocK-uh. How’re y’all feelin’ tonighT, King Falls- I said How are you, Feelin’!
Sammy
[softly] We’re feeling alright.
Reverend Hawthorne
Praise GoD-uh! Hallelujah! Now a little birdie, uh-just chirp’n on my shoulder, told me there was a SighTing. A Vision. Dare I say it, eyeballs were laid on our Lord and Saviour at a burger joint in our fair city.
Sammy
Yeah, about 9 o’clock here.
Reverend Hawthorne
Could it Be-uh! that our 5-week-revival worked. Could it Be-uh! that our prayers have been brought forth the lamb of God-uh. Can I get an amen!
Ben
Reverend Hawthorne we—
Reverend Hawthorne
Amen! This miracle-uh, this sight from our God-uh, perched on a Mountain of Sanctity, says that he is ready to lead-uh, his most Highly Favored, Congregation bacK to the promised land. Gimme some organ, Deacon Reggie [organ music begins playing in bg]
Sammy
[aside] Do you think Reggie has to wheel that thing around just in case?
Ben
This is getting good.
Reverend Hawthorne
Play it dirty, brother. We are going Home-uh. Take us back to Calvary, take us BACK-uh! … Samuel, Benjamin may I ask you gentlemen if you have a relationship-uh with the Author of the E-ternal Sal-vation; [organ goes silent] [softly] are ya saved?
Sammy
I’m—
Reverend Hawthorne
Then let me tell y’all, [organ starts again] because if you aren’t-uh, I’m coming back to town. One weekend only, the Xavier “Right with GoD-uh” Hawthorne Experience will be wheelin’ bacK into King Falls Fairgrounds this very night-uh. We are hoping to get One- On- One with the Risen Christ and start preparin’ for Kingdom Come. But just like old Xavier, you gotta come on down-uh so we can get you TurnT uP With GoD-uh. [click, dial tone]
Sammy
Xavier? Hello?
Ben
He’s, gone. Sammy.
Sammy
Well, you heard it here first folks. Xavier Hawthorn’s Travelling Roadshow is coming back to town. Will Jack in the Box Jesus make his stage debut?
Ben
[muttering] Tch- Jesus.
Sammy
Literally.
Ben
Do you think we could get an interview? Would it be Mr. Christ? Or-
Sammy
Something tells me that there is something more to the story than what we’ve heard so far, Ben.
Ben
Tsk. I get that, but this is King Falls, Sammy.
Sammy
What a perfect place to make a return: a rinky-dink town with no internet.
Ben
Line- [muttered] dammit, there’s only one line. Uh, you’re on with Sammy and Ben.
Archie
Good evenin’ fellas!
[small dogs barking in bg]
Sammy
Is thi-
Archie
It’s Archie Simmons!
Ben
He-ey Archie, how’s Princess Von Barktooth?
Archie
Well, I do have news concernin’ the princess, and I just want to possibly recant some info from our previous call a few weeks back.
Sammy
About the werewolves?
Archie
Correct.
Sammy
Wow. I mean, you sounded pretty convinced that you saw a werewolf.
Archie
And now I’m saying that maybe I was misinformed.
Sammy
I think you should probably tell Troy and the Sheriff’s Office, Archie.
Archie
*giggles* You silly Sally, Troy’s on his way over now
Ben
Why the change of heart, Archie?
Archie
Well, new information has come to light boys, I mean with the Divine One making his triumphant, and let’s be honest, dramatic return to King Falls.
Sammy
You’re talking about the glowing man at the Jack in the Box?
Archie
[softly] Let’s be real here, it’s the J-Man, of course a heavenly carpenter would pick King Falls. So many projects to keep busy with.
Sammy
[dryly] Uh-huh.
Archie
Plus, with the princess and this new information, we have to believe this.
Ben
You keep saying that, what’s going on with the princess Archie?
Archie
She’s in a delicate condition.
Sammy
Oh, of course. I mean she’s been through a lot.
Archie
*giggles* No Sammy, I mean she’s with child. Ch-children. Puppies? There’s a bun in my $2400 oven boys!
Sammy
Wait. She’s pregnant? From the werewolf attack?!
Archie
[softly again] Well, that’s the thing. While I believed in my heart of hearts that the hillbilly beast from the trailer park had gotten to the princess, I think…
Ben
What. What do you think Archie?
Archie
I mean it was dark, I know it was a full moon but I was scared and recently awakened, sleep in my eyes etc. and so on.
Sammy
You don’t think it was the werewolves.
Archie
I’m thinking with this new evidence and the fact that I saw a long-haired, bearded man in a Biblical Act— Yeah I-I- I think- there’s a chance it could have been [whispering] the man upstairs.
Ben
[stern] Upstairs from whom?
Archie
Mankind! Come on Ben, get with the picture!
Sammy
He’s saying that because there’s been a holy sighting tonight- which we should all be a little bit doubtful of- then maybe it wasn’t the werewolves, but the Alpha and the Omega.
Ben
No! NO WA- That’s too much, Archie. You saw the werewolf. He looked you in the eye and howled at the moon.
Archie
I don’t know what kind of weird things Jesus is into.
Ben
No way. This is ludicrous.
Archie
You just wait and see Ben! The princess may have lost her Westminster dreams, but it was all part of God’s plan.
Ben
We’ve got to go Archie *laughs* you’re crossing a line that we cannot cross at King Falls AM.
Archie
Judge Not, lest ye be judged boys. Kardashians[sic] 3:16 or a Psalm or something. I think Troy’s coming around the bend anyways boys, laters!
[click, dial tone]
Sammy
You know? When I walk in the door every night I say to myself, “Nothing’s gonna surprise me tonight” And more times than not, I am just Dead Wrong.
Ben
Let’s give the phone a rest for a moment, Sammy, the record player is just begging to be used.
Sammy
*chuckles* Not a bad idea Ben.
[phone pings]
Ben
What? *gasps* My phone! [several pings] OHH it’s back baby!
Sammy
Me too! What’s going on?
[pinging continues]
Ben
What’s up! Oh my God, I could literally kiss the apparition of Steve Jobs.
Sammy
Hey, I’ve got a text here, Unknown Number.
Ben
Okay, what does it say?
Sammy
“I- I know why this happened. I know how to stop it. We need to talk“
Ben
What?
Sammy
No, that’s what the text said.
Ben
You don’t think this has anything to do with… Thank You, Jesus.

I’ve been saying this episode of our podcast @screenheatmiami was going to be a big one and it is! Kaity Williams is a big director of photography having helmed projects in so many genres, narrative film, short film, music video, documentary, reality and more. One of her specialties is shooting mean cars, the kind you see in the Fast And The Furious. At five feet even she tackles the big jobs with the ferocity and care of some of her favorites (and ours at Screen Heat Miami) Conrad Hall and Roger Deacons. She handles every camera, rig and obstacle as deftly as anyone in the biz, owning her own ARRI camera (shooting on so many more) and a specialty bevy of lenses showcasing a style that reflects much care and dedication to the craft, which she speaks on in the interview. This is a great one if you’re getting into cinematography, are already in it or are just a lover of movies as we follow her journey from South Carolina to the City of Lights. Coronavirus...What Happens Now?

We are a few weeks into the coronavirus era of the music industry and things don’t seem to be getting better . As I write this I am eagerly waiting to see if a massive bill gets passed to help bail out the economy, but who knows what will come of it. The point being – bands are in a weird place right now and there’s a lot to be discussed on that front. What I wanted to pick apart in this article was how you should be planning to move ahead after this. I had a really interesting conversation with Blasko (Ozzy Osbourne bassist and manager of Black Label Society) among others today and it led me to some interesting conclusions. Namely that if you’re not promoting your band now, you’re hurting yourself, that plotting too much before the autumn is probably a misstep, that the next year in the biz will be a clusterfuck and of course that a lot of the people who provide the infrastructure of this industry are really screwed right now.
4. Now is the time to promote!
A lot of people are seeing all the coronavirus stuff going down and retreating. Maybe they are recording, or other times just choosing to do nothing at all, too caught up in the hellish whirlwind we have found ourselves in. I totally get it; it’s a scary time. But the thing is, as Blasko told me on our podcast today, if you don’t promote now you’re only shooting yourself in the foot. People are looking for content to consume now more than ever and you can provide a healthy escape. Don’t you want to be a part of that solution? I know that I do, and even if it is hard it is important that we work together to make this solution happen!
3. Things won’t go back to normal before Autumn!
I’ve been talking to a lot of people about this one since its so scary and weird and unfortunately it seems like, while we might see some DIY shows or whatever in the interim, things aren’t going to revert to the way they were before autumn. This is because of both the massive economic impact that coronavirus has had as well as the simple fact that people are shifting most of their stuff to late Q3 and Q4 so that they can be sure the virus isn’t going to be dragging them down. This really sucks. I know that we WILL see tours again soon, but in the interim we are all going to have to wait. Unless the economic situation gets fixed then the tours are going to be much more sparsely attended too unfortunately.
2. The next year is gonna be weird…
Here’s the thing – as a result of things not really getting back to normal before the autumn and so many releases getting delayed until then it’s going to be harder than ever to have a successful release in that period. The back half of the year is always uber crowded with releases, now it’s going to be almost too insane to even fathom with every major band going out there and trying to drop a record and tour. I think that this is going to lead to a pile on effect that goes well into 2021. The festival situation is also going to be a nightmare with a ton of festivals just trying to rebook their lineups from canceled 2020 editions. This means it’s going to be hard to get added to any bills in 2021 – another unfortunate and frightening reality.
1. A lot of people are screwed right now…
This is the big one. There are so many people in this industry who are basically fucked right now. I’m talking about techs, photographers, promoters, the works. Therese are all people who typically run their shit month to month and who all lost, at minimum three months income. Furthermore most of these people are freelancers so the odds are they are not going to be too dramatically helped by any sort of bailout. I know this is really scary and it sucks to hear. This is the world we are in now and I’m not sure what the solution is because the problem is just so massive. So take a moment and think of those people, don’t get a refund on that show, call up and ask for a consultation on your rig, do something. These people gotta eat too and we only win if we all look out for each other!

20 Games I Loved in 2016
The Switch delay. Several big AAA duds. Another year without an official Mother 3 U.S. release. 2016 could have been a disappointing year. (Outside of video games, it certainly took its toll.) But at least from my perspective, the good far outweighed the bad. Virtual reality finally made it out of the gates, and despite some hiccups, it shows real promise. Long-delayed games like Final Fantasy XV and The Last Guardian somehow made it to store shelves AND surpassed expectations. And love it or hate it, Pokémon Go inspired a genuine pop culture craze the likes of which we’ve never seen before, at least as far as games go. I think all of that is worth celebrating.
Before we get to the list, some quick shout-outs and no-brainer caveats…
2016 was not kind to the Wii U, but the 3DS quietly had one of its best years ever. That’s partly reflected here, but I couldn’t make room for Dragon Quest VII, Fire Emblem Fates, BoxBoxBoy!, Metroid Prime: Federation Force and Gotta Protectors, to name a few. Sometimes it felt like Nintendo was just cleaning out its closet — how long ago was DQVII released in Japan? — but we benefited either way.
Overall, I played fewer games this year, but the ones I did play held my interest longer. Thanks to various microtransactions and DLC, 2016 probably hit my wallet just as hard.
What didn’t I play? Stardew Valley, SUPERHOT, Final Fantasy XV (at least past chapter 2), Frog Fractions 2, Hitman — oh, and I didn’t get to stuff from last year like Yakuza 5 or The Witcher 3, either. Yakuza 4 was pretty solid though.
I left off any new ports of games that came out last year or prior, unless there were substantial additions that changed the experience in a meaningful way. That meant The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD and Mini Metro weren’t in the running, while Rez Infinite technically was.
Love making lists, hate ranking items in said lists, just because I’m incredibly fickle. There’s a good chance that I’ll want to shuffle everything around the moment I publish this. But my podcasting buddies are counting on me here, so it’s time to be decisive.
Keeping all that in mind, here are the games I really loved in 2016…
20. The Witness - I’m already cheating because if I’m being honest, I didn’t actually love this game. The Witness takes a couple dozen hours to finish, and I spent at least half of them staring at a notebook, drawing grids, connecting dots, and having no idea how to pave forward. But even if I didn’t love the game, I respect it immensely. I admire Jonathan Blow’s commitment to this singular idea, of taking the kind of puzzle you might see on a restaurant placemat and coming up with every possible permutation of it. And there is of course a “meta” layer on top of that, where solutions to each component change the environment around you — tree top bridges that unfold based on the paths your lines take, or colored glass panels that create new puzzles on top of old ones. It might be cold and off-putting at times, but The Witness is still commendable as the ultimate puzzle box.
19. SuperHyperCube - I bought into PlayStation VR for games like Rez Infinite and RIGs — big, flashy, “immersive” experiences. And they delivered! I’m a very happy PS VR owner, and I hope Sony builds on its momentum this year. (I’m skeptical, but then being a virtual reality early adopter was always a leap of faith.) However, while I got exactly what I expected from most of the launch titles, it's the simple puzzle game seemingly modeled off of “Brain Wall” that I keep coming back to. I turn on the headset to play Job Simulator or Battlezone, but I always play a couple rounds of SuperHyperCube before I’m done. A solid case for virtual reality not as a thrilling roller coaster, but a hypnotic, relaxing voyage.
18. Headlander - The best game Double Fine has put out since Iron Brigade. Free-roaming Metroid-style exploration, a perfect 70s-synth sci-fi score and a fun body swapping gimmick at the heart of it all. I wish there were more vessels for your noggin to control, but there’s a strong foundation here.
17. Kirby: Planet Robobot - It’s easy to take Kirby games for granted, and that’s especially true of Robobot, which uses the same engine and many of the same powers as the recent Triple Deluxe. What does the former bring to the table then? Smart level designs that take advantage of the new mechs without letting them dominate the action. A novel mechanical world that feels distinct from the typical pastel meadows. New amiibo support. OK, so maybe it doesn’t add that much to the series, but it’s right up there with Super Star anyway.
16. Pokkén Tournament - This game is a fresher, more enjoyable fighting game than Street Fighter V. It doesn’t even matter (too much) that the single player is pretty thin or that the roster is small. When’s the last time you played a one-on-one fighting game that felt truly new? Pokkén is a great 3D fighter and a great 2D fighter at the same time, which is no small feat. And it’s also a gorgeously animated recreation of those battles we all imagined happening in our Game Boys 20 years ago.
15. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - The popular sentiment seems to be that Madagascar is when this final Uncharted entry really takes off. Slow drama and frequent cut scenes give way to island exploration and memorable shootouts. My take? The back half is fun and the epilogue is lovely, but I could spend an entire game in Nathan and Elena’s living room, or hopping around the globe for the next story sequence. Wherever you stand, this is a fine way to close out a reliable series.
14. Picross 3D: Round 2 - Seven Picross games — eight if you count the Twilight Princess freebie — on the eShop. That’s a lot of a perfectly fine thing. But none of them are Picross 3D. Thankfully, the real deal finally arrived this year, with hundreds of puzzles and a few extra gameplay wrinkles. Worth the premium price tag.
13. Titanfall 2 - The campaign didn’t need to be good. Multiplayer FPS games live and die by their multiplayer, and many developers seemingly write off the single player experience as an afterthought. That’s why Titanfall 2 is such an unexpected treat. The factory, the time hopping, the airborne carrier — all cleverly designed, with platforming gimmicks that would feel just as suited for a Metroid Prime game. I think the reason the new Mirror’s Edge fell flat for me was that this game featured the same parkour moves in a much more exciting package.
12. Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE - This crossover game is Persona-lite, yes, but I think that sells the characters and world a bit short. While its inspiration focuses on the pressures of being a Japanese high schooler, #FE is all about the Tokyo show biz scene. Pop music, soap operas, microwave cooking shows — it’s all very goofy, but the game still takes its protagonists’ dreams and ambitions seriously. #FE also makes clever use of the Wii U GamePad, turning it into a tablet/social app that helps keeps the conversations going. Even if you’re not into this particular “scene,” #FE may still win you over.
11. Rhythm Heaven Megamix - I can’t get enough Rhythm Heaven. They could put 20 new musical minigames on a cart annually and it’d make my list every year. Sumo wrestlers, lumberjack bears, monkey slumber parties — all magic.
10. Severed - A Vita game! It’s great to see DrinkBox Studios stretch beyond sidescrollers with this first person dungeon crawler full of grotesque monsters and creepy, colorful mazes. Swiping and poking on the Vita’s touchscreen feels great. The controls are key to Severed’s success; if battles were menu-driven, the entire game would fall apart.
9. Pocket Card Jockey - I hope Nintendo keeps letting Game Freak be this weird. It’s not just that it’s horse racing plus solitaire. It’s your jockey biting the dust and being brought back from the dead to repay his debt to the angels. It’s the brassy, big band score that accompanies every race. It’s horses with luchador masks and cats hanging from their backsides. Pocket Card Jockey is a miracle of localization.
8. Pokémon Sun - Yes, another Pokémon game. The Alola region is the best thing to ever happen to this series. Previous games had regions based on cities like New York and Paris, but the results always felt half-hearted. In Sun (and Moon), the tropical island setting influences everything from the creatures you catch to the trials you complete. I’ve never demanded a believable world from this series, but that’s kind of what we get here, and it’s terrific.
7. Inside - This is the type of game where the less you know going in, the better. It’s Limbo — a previous Justin GotY — filtered through a twisted dream logic that I still can’t get out of my head months later.
6. Paper Mario: Color Splash - I know you don’t like Sticker Star. Rest assured: that 3DS oddity feels like a rough draft for Color Splash, which improves upon its predecessor in every way. A textured, vibrant world that rivals Tearaway in its papercraft. Thrilling scenarios like a train heist, an underwater game show and the throwback above. Hilarious dialogue that mostly makes up for the many, many identical toads. I miss the liberties Intelligent Systems used to take with the Mushroom Kingdom, but everything else about Color Splash restores this spin-off series to its former glory.
5. Overcooked - This year’s couch co-op champ. Cooking with a partner is all about communication, and that’s doubly true when the kitchen is split across two flatbed trucks or on an iceberg rocking back and forth. My friends and I love head-to-head games like Smash Bros. and Towerfall, but it’s nice to play a game that’s all about puzzle solving and careful planning together. And I love the wistful stage select music.
4. Dragon Quest Builders - Minecraft has always fascinated me, but I don’t do well without direction. That’s why I’m so grateful for Dragon Quest Builders, which breaks down the open world construction into small, manageable tasks. I started off just sticking to blueprints and keeping decorations to a minimum; now, I’m spending hours building up towns the way I want them to look, for no other reason than my own personal satisfaction. Even taking the crafting element out of the equation, Builders does a great job of capturing the adventuring spirit of its parent series.
3. Pokémon Go - I didn’t set out to put THREE Pokémon games on here, and in a vacuum, this is much less satisfying than Pokkén or Sun. But we don’t play video games in a vacuum, and certainly not this one. I played Pokémon Go in Central Park, talking to strangers to find out where the Ivysaur was hiding. Or I played on my lunch breaks, exploring parts of South Street Seaport with coworkers that I had ignored for years. Go’s peak came and went, but it remains one of my fondest experiences of the year.
2. The Last Guardian - Another game that’s more than the sum of its parts. The Last Guardian is finicky and sometimes frustrating. Trico is hard to climb. The camera doesn’t know what to do when you’re up against the wall. So what? How many games feature a creature this lifelike? He may be an illusion made up of A.I. routines, scripted animations and fur shaders, but all of those elements come together in a uniquely convincing way. His evolution from reluctant ally to friend has a subtlety I’ve never seen before. I’m glad Ueda spends as much time focusing on the inner struggles as he does the external ones. Hope it doesn’t take another decade for his next game.
1. Overwatch - I didn’t even know what Overwatch was until two weeks before its release, and even then, I didn’t expect much from it. I had played Team Fortress 2 and thought it was just fine. I knew what to expect. Medics, tanks, builders — that sounded familiar to me. But I was so wrong. Overwatch isn’t just a team-based shooter; it’s the superhero team-up game I’ve been longing for since “The Avengers” was in theaters.
All 23 (and counting!) heroes have their superpowers, and all of them have their jobs to do. What really sets Overwatch apart is when these heroes are bouncing off of each other. Any combination of six is going to have its own dynamics. Mei dropping ice walls to give Reinhardt time to recharge his shield. Junkrat dropping traps to help Bastion watch his back. Mercy gliding up to Pharah to give her rockets a little extra punch. Every battle brings new possibilities and strategies to the table. I’ve played over 100(!) hours and feel like there’s still so much to learn.
But it’s not all serious business either. The colorful personalities, animations, costume designs and more do so much to shape the world, even when I know next to nothing about the overall “lore.” Last year, Splatoon felt like the only shooter I’d ever need, but Overwatch has actually managed to supplant it in my heart. That’s something this Nintendo fanboy never thought he’d say. Can’t wait to see how Blizzard builds on their masterpiece in year two.
