Things That Make You Go “Hmmmmmm....”

Hello! I have written a very long thing for you today.

Like any Desus shipper, I fully realize that we are the dark horse in this crazy race. Also like any Desus shipper, I grow weary of being accused of “fetishization,” or of crackshipping. I do not just ship stuff for the hell of it. This shit is stressful! My life was perfectly, 100% fine before the day Episode 6.10 - The Next World aired on my tv and I was left wondering “hmmmmmm...what the hell were they trying to do there?”

So I in all my film-analyzing nerdiness have complied a long-ass list of all the things The Walking Dead has done with Daryl and Jesus that kind of have to make you go “Hmmmmmm....” And I broke it down by episode, because it would be the definition of TL;DR if I didn’t.

Am I saying that all these things I’m about to list off mean unequivocally and without a doubt that Daryl/Jesus is going to go canon? Of course not. Canon is canon. All the speculation and evidence in the world doesn’t make something canon until it appears onscreen.

So without further ado:

Thirsty’s Unofficial Semi-Exhaustive List of Things That Make You Go Hmmmmmm - Part 1

Episode 6.10 - The Next World

The episode that started it all. Between the domesticity of ASZ, Daryl and Denise’s conversation, Daryl and Rick’s bromance, all the Jesus shenanigans, and Richonne finally going canon, this was one of the most light-hearted, funny, and emotionally satisfying episodes in recent memory on the show.

The Desus implications in 6.10 are a "sum of its parts" situation. No one thing in the episode is extremely suspicious all by itself, but when you put it all together, it's one massive raised eyebrow.

- What is Daryl’s initial goal in this episode, other than helping Rick with a supply run? He’s looking for a soda for Denise, for her girlfriend Tara. This opens the episode and is brought up repeatedly throughout. Daryl putting forth a whole lot of effort to help Denise (who just happens to be gay) to do something nice for someone she loves. Denise, who specifically says to Daryl that she’s “not good at this stuff.” This motivation drives much of Daryl’s action in the episode, but it does not come into play in the plot of the show ever again. We can therefore consider that its significance, whatever that might be, is limited to this episode.

- Of note to many in the fandom are the interactions Daryl has had with the ASZ residents since his arrival. Daryl seems to have formed a connection with Aaron and Eric, and now this episode appears to have become friendly with Denise. That seems to be the extent of Daryl’s branching out from TF, and interestingly, all of these characters are gay. It could be argued that TPTB are trying to build empathy and tolerance for these characters by pairing them with Daryl; personally, I’d like to think that TPTB have a higher regard for their viewers than that and believe these audience will accept these characters without such coddling, but it is to be considered. Tara, however, entered the show out and proud with no such treatment.

- Despite Rick and Daryl being the two main characters in the episode, Jesus primarily interacts with Daryl. More dialogue and more screen time is shared between the two. Why Daryl? Why not Rick, since Rick is after all the main character, or why not Rick and Daryl equally?

- Jesus and Daryl’s interactions in this episode fit the definition of a “meet-cute” to a T. If you don't know what a meet-cute is, allow TVTropes.com to explain: “Meet Cute is a way to quickly introduce two characters and set up their burgeoning relationship. A meet-cute is almost always rife with awkwardness, embarrassment, and sometimes outright hostility…This meeting can happen by way of any of an innumerable array of circumstances, so long as there's something cutesy about it. Possibly they have an instant dislike for one another.”

Hmmmm…

Awkwardness - How about Daryl awkwardly trying to chase Jesus down in a field, then wrestling like idiots in the cab of the truck?

Embarrassment - Jesus makes fools of Rick and Daryl several times throuought the episode. Rick for the most part lets it roll off his back by the end of the day: Daryl, on the other hand… Outright hostility - Lots of gun pointing, punching, name-calling, property theft, and glowering in this one!

Cutesy - well, this is pretty cutesy:

Instant dislike - Daryl irrationally despises Jesus from the moment they meet. Rick warms up to him fairly quickly, attempting to ask him the 3 Questions, and despite being angry over Jesus’ theft of the truck, Rick encourages Daryl not to leave him. Meanwhile, Daryl’s over here calling Jesus “prick,” “asshole,” and “little shit,” holding his gun on Jesus after Rick had dropped his, antagonizing him in every single interaction, and threatening to leave him in a tree.

It’s worth noting that despite Daryl’s nonstop antagonism and generally shitty attitude towards Jesus, Jesus saves him from a walker.

- The main theme of the episode is the idea of “letting people in.” Rick had previously rejected the idea of looking for more people to bring into Alexandria, while Daryl had embraced it. At the beginning of the episode, Rick informs Daryl that he is coming around to Daryl’s way of thinking, and is open to letting people in. Daryl does an immediate and irrational about-face on the subject upon meeting Jesus, which continues throughout the episode right up until we find Daryl and Rick transporting Jesus back to the ASZ for medical care. During this scene, Rick reiterates that they need to let people in, that Michonne and Daryl had both tried to impart this on Rick, and that he was finally listening, and willing to let people in. I intend to complete a scene analysis of the car ride at a later point, so I will leave it for now.

- Which brings us to the fact that this is the episode where Richonne, after three years, finally went canon. Many would argue that Richonne could have gone canon at any point within the previous year and it would not have felt completely out of place. Yet this was the episode they chose, an episode that focused primarily something other than Rick and Michonne. It certainly fits with the theme of finally “letting people in.” Interesting too, that this episode focused so heavily on Daryl and Jesus, and Daryl’s sudden, Jesus-inspired reversal on the idea of letting people in, which he has begrudgingly overcome by the end of the episode.
