Gundam Seed/Destiny is and always will be my favourite anime series and while rewatching Destiny this time I've found myself changing perspective on some things.
It's probably no surprise that my favourite female character is Cagalli from Gundam Seed. But I think the thing I was most excited about in Destiny was the series long build up to a rematch between Kira and Shinn, on equal ground. I remember being so disappointed that it never happened, and that Athrun ended up fighting Shinn instead. At the time, I just assumed the writers wanted Athrun to have the spotlight and have Kira fight someone else. But no explanation made sense.
Rewatching this time has shown the nuance of that decision. I think it was a good decision not to have Kira and Shinn fight, and this is primarily because of how Gundam Seed is a battle of ideologies. Every fight is a battle of ideology and not between two people per se. Especially the latter half of Destiny.
The reason why I like the choice in final battle is because it aligns with what the series was building up all along. We start off Destiny with Orb vs Shinn. That's the primary conflict set up. Shinn hates Orb.
In the beginning of the series, Cagalli represents Orb and we see it carry on in the series. We reach a culmination of this battle in the second half, when Cagalli in the ORB-01 Akatsuki is put in battle against Shinn.
Shinn has hated Cagalli from the very first episode. Their ideologies are the issue. Orb is on one side, Shinn and his radicalized beliefs on the other. They clash over differing beliefs. That battle that happens when Cagalli is defending Orb and is capable of doing it in her new weapon is the build up and the biggest battle.
On this viewing of Destiny I was actually more excited to see Cagalli kick Shinn's ass. I was excited to see how she would finally take back her power against him, after a season of her not showing how strong she is. This was Orb's ideology versus what is Zaft's ideology. This conflict had been brewing since Episode 1 and it did not fail me!
Likewise, once Athrun returns to Orb and takes the Justice, he becomes the Orb ideology representative. His entire ideology throughout was being corrected and changed by his decisions. When he is in the Justice, in an Orb pilot uniform, he is the Cagalli representative. He had to fight Shinn, to show that their ideologies clashed all season, and lead to this moment.
I wasn't as hyped about this fight, but it was needed. It was the same fight all through Destiny and this was its conclusion.
Kira's original conflict with Shinn was him being a representation of Orb. It was never Kira that Shinn hated, as we learn in Final Plus that he didn't even know Kira. It was Orb, and Cagalli, that Shinn wanted to destroy. The Freedom represented the ideologies of Orb: We vow not to attack another nation, not to allow another nation to attack us, and not to intervene in the conflicts of other nations.
He was attacking the ideologies that he hated, that hurt him. Once Kira stepped aside to allow Cagalli to rightfully represent her people and her ideologies, he became her rival. And once Cagalli entrusted her ideologies in Athrun, he became Cagalli's true representative. And he became the force that took Shinn down.
Likewise, I think I finally feel that Kira battling Ray Za Burrel was perfect. It was exactly what Seed was about in essence, and Destiny carried the message on. Kira is a message about how every conflicting ideology can mesh together, and how pacifism is not a total failure. Gundam Seed did not have Kira battle a rival like Shinn, but rather finally placed him against an enemy his weapon could not destroy: Rau Le Creuset and his built up ideologies involving nihilism and the uselessness of life. It was a true battle between someone who saw value in life and someone who saw no value in life. Kira's and Rau's conflict was beyond the lower level conflict that everyone else had. It was what the series was showing.
Ray represented the inability to move on and how strong the idea of hopelessness was. Ray had no will of his own. He accepted he was Rau Le Creuset and by extension he continued the battle Rau had. I would argue that Ray and Gilbert Durandal together made up what Rau had been arguing; the hopelessness of humanity and fickle nature of life. When Ray finally gave into Kira and Durandal lost, the show concluded a 2 season exploration into a bigger theme.
Kira fighting Shinn would have been nowhere near as powerful as fighting a representation of nihilism. Rau/Ray/Gilbert were enemies that only Kira (and Lacus by extension) could strike down.
So I think these two final battles were perfect. They explored bigger themes and really engaged the audience. Instead of being predictable and rehashing Shinn vs Kira again.
Also let's just be real. Kira, when he is not restrained and in doubt is too much for Shinn. He would have wiped the floor with him when Kira came to defend the Akatsuki in the Strike Freedom LOL

It's fairly typical for non UC timeline Gundam shows to have a "Char clone", a character who, in function acts similarly to the iconic Char Aznoble. Gundam Seed Destiny, however, has like 5 Char clones. All ones representing different arcs of Char's life. Ray reminds me of young Char, manipulating Shinn (Garma) for his own gain. La Creuset/Roanoke is the equivalent to the 0079 Char. Mu La Flaga is much like Quattro. Even getting the golden Strike Gundam to parallel the Hyaku Shiki. Lastly, Durandal is very similar to CCA Char.
I wonder if there being that many plus the literal clone subplot was supposed to be a commentary on Char clones of some sort.

Hm weird thought.
So Al Da Flaga in Gundam SEED.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Right is the best picture we have of him, but left is more representative in my opinion)
He commissions multiple clones of himself from Dr Hibiki in order to inherit his wealth and power, and the way Rau puts it, in order to achieve a form of immortality.
Thing is, how many clones does he commission?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because we know that Rau le Creuset(Top Right) is his clone, who eventually ended up killing him and from who we know most of our information about him (Rau is in the middle of his Big Villain Speech when he says most of this, but he’s essentially recounting his origin so I trust what he says here). Rey Za Burrel (bottom left) is also a clone and was made later, most likely as a replacement for Rau once Al found out he was a flawed clone. Thing is, Al was dead before he had much of a chance to impact Rey’s development (Mu doesn’t remember Rau, so Rau must have murdered Al and burnt down the estate when they were both quite young), so it’s implied that Rau and Durandal were the primary influences on Rey’s life, as shown in this image:
Tumblr media
Mu La Flaga (top left) is, by all accounts, Al’s biological son, who he hated because he believed that Mu’s mother had tainted him in some way (though I’ll be honest, I’ve accidentally read Mu as the successful clone multiple times prior).
And then, finally, there’s Prayer (bottom right), who’s a “clone of an EA pilot with excellent spatial awareness”. Which sounds to me like the EA found a Al clone and accidentally read it as a clone of his son Mu (which would imply that disinheriting Mu was pointless, since he’s already a really close genetic match). I mean, that makes more sense to me than the EA commissioning a one-off clone, something they despise on the same level of coordinators, just to reproduce a single good pilot. However, I can’t find anything that explicitly states this, so it’s just weird.
But apparently Rey was just one of multiple clones? So prayer could have been part of the same “Batch”? And/or there could be a bunch more Al Da Flaga clones running around, this turning them into an expy of Puru?

Talk about a rough go about it, Rey had been watching both Shinn and Athrun go at it on a recent incursion out in the field, it ended with Shinn getting slapped across the face.

chronic, stress & mind for miwa, chaos, rey, meyrin (you don't have to do all if you don't want to!!)
I did them all.
chronic: does my muse have any chronic health conditions / illnesses? how do these affect them from day-to-day?
Miwa is fortunate enough to not have any lasting consequences from Ashoka accelerating her growth. Due to her connection with various Mir, she's at least in part protected from the Assimilation phenomenon as well.
Chaos is very similar, having only escaped the complications of a puppet controlled by a Mir due to Malespero's fondness for him.
Rey, on the other hand is not so fortunate. Being a clone, he suffers from near-constant and severe pain. While the medicine given to him by the Chairman does help prevent it, if he forgets, or should he experience extreme stress....
Because of this, he needs to keep his medicine on hand whenever possible, being a soldier and a mobile suit pilot makes this difficult, though, and he is sometimes caught in situations where he does now have access to it.
Because Rey's condition is caused by him being a clone, something which is considered taboo in the Earth Sphere, unless the Chairman (or somebody else who knows about his condition) is able to find some sort of "cure," he will likely die young.
Meyrin does not have any specific health conditions, but her physical health is often affected by her mental health, leading her to occasionally neglect her health at best, or cause herself direct harm at worse.
stress: does my muse handle stress well? what is a surefire sign for others to tell that they’ve become stressed? how does stress affect them mentally / physically?
Miwa handles extreme stress about how you would expect somebody like her to. She ignores it until it becomes unbearable, and then she hides in her room or cries until she feels like she can go back to playing the hero.
If Miwa is curled up in her room with her stuffed bear - something only her family has seen - then she's reached the point where she's no longer able to be strong for everyone else.
Because Miwa is much younger than she actually looks and acts - a result of Ashoka's interference - she seems to 'regress' to her actual age when in these situations.
Chaos doesn't often show stress if he even experiences it. It's likely that Malespero's influence suppresses those feelings.
While in battle, any stress felt usually takes the form of a powerful anger... or more accurately, only fuels the already existing anger there.
Rey can usually handle stress well, but depending on the trigger for it...
While normally he hides his feelings better than most others, when truly overwhelmed it can trigger a complete breakdown on both the mental and physical level.
At best, this can render him unconscious for a few hours, at worst, it could eventually lead him to an early grave.
Meyrin is good at putting up a strong front, however she's fairly easily overwhelmed. When she finally stops trying to act like she's okay, then things have gotten to be too much even for her.
Normally, though, you can usually gauge her stress level from how much she looks around (as if watching out for someone or something) and how restless she seems.
Because Meyrin's mental health is fairly unstable, large amounts of stress can trigger serious episodes.
mind: does my muse have any mental conditions that affect their lives? what are they? how do they handle them? what coping methods do they use most?
Miwa suffers from post traumatic stress disorder, after the events of Exodus, like most other Fafner pilots. Though she's good at hiding this, and it mainly manifests in an almost suicidal level of self sacrifice. Because she does not see the latter as a problem, she doesn't try to "cope" with it, instead smiling and acting like it was normal.
Chaos most notably lacks a proper sense of self, at the moment. Though he suffers from post traumatic stress disorder carried over from his previous "self" and the actions taken before he was fully under Malespero's control.
Like Mitsuhiro before him, he also has borderline personality disorder, however this seems to have been "suppressed" along with his previous personality. For the most part.
Rey suffers from a combination of post traumatic stress disorder, borderline personality disorder, and severe distrust of and suspicion of others, especially his peers.
While his PTSD is usually managed by suppressing his feelings, his unhealthy attachment to the Chairman, feelings of inadequacy, and distrust of others, are at least in part encouraged in order to further the Destiny Plan. Due to this, he doesn't necessarily view them as something to be handled or resolved.
Meyrin also, like the other three suffers from PTSD, though mostly unrelated to her activities in the war. She also is deeply paranoid and struggles with trusting her government, and the technology she works with.
While she can usually calm down from an episode related to her childhood trauma with a shower, or some time to ground herself (after years of coping, and support), the latter is... more tricky than that.

Okay, Gundam SEED Freedom has completely taken over my brain for the past 24 hours. I ABSOLUTELY MUST GUSH LORE AND PUT IT DOWN SOMEWHERE.
Naturally, there will be major spoilers for Freedom below the cutoff. If you don't want to be spoiled, then TURN BACK NOW, PLEASE.
Okay, we good? Good.
First the lore: A major theme throughout quite honestly the entire SEED series is that of Destiny. Rau le Creuset believed it was humanities destiny to destroy itself, Gilbert Durandal believed humanity would be happiest if their destiny was determined by genetics, and Foundation, the nation introduced in Freedom, follows in Durandal's footsteps, only to a more violet degree.
The main thing that differs Foundation from Durandal is the existence of Accords; basically Ultimate Coordinator MK2. At some point between Ulen Hibiki's initial experiments that created both Kira Yamato and Rau le Creuset, and Durandal being a part of whatever it was when he devised the Destiny Plan (as well as whatever created Rey za Burrel), two particular individuals were a part of the overall scheme. These two were Aura Maha Khyber (the blonde loli), and Lacus' mother.
That's right. Lacus Clyne is an Accord. She, alongside Orphee Lam Tao (blonde dude), were designed with the express purpose of running the Destiny Plan as a couple. Arranged marriage between Coordinators is no big surprise, let's be real. Hell, Lacus was probably genetically coded to be attracted to Orphee, shown in the movie by certain scenes (not show how else to describe them).
But, as you might guess (or know, if you've seen the movie), Lacus still chooses Kira over Orphee. Why? Well, time for some theorycrafting.
It's my believe that the main message of Freedom is one of Nature VS Nurture. Who we are genetically vs Who we are, raised by our environment.
Kira Yamato is a First Generation Ultimate Coordinator, so while he's outstanding compared to normal Coordinators, he pales in comparison to the Accords. But, Kira always said he was more than just the byproduct of Ulen Hibiki's hubris. More than a child of Ulen, he is a Yamato; raised and nurtured by Caridad and Hamura Yamato, after being entrusted to them by Via Hibiki, his mother by blood. Kira's kindness may very well be engrained into his DNA, but it was something he was taught to value by the Yamato's. He could have easily become conceited, like so many other Coordinators, but he didn't.
Just the same, Lacus Clyne, as far as we knew up to Destiny, was raised by the late Siegel Clyne, who almost certainly taught her to value people based on who they are, not what they represent. She can be cunning underneath her cheerful exterior in her youth, but she gravitated towards Kira because he was Kira Yamato; the kind boy who stuck his neck out for a stranger.
A wise dragon once said: Destiny is little more than the sum of our choices. I feel this quote perfectly encapsulates the core of SEED as a whole, not just Freedom. Destiny shouldn't be something chosen for you; it should be something you yourself choose. And in the end, Lacus chose Kira. A common theme in Freedom was the idea of 'Loving someone because you need them', which Lacus herself refutes with "You don't love someone because you need them; You need them, because you love them". Its a sentiment that Kira actually shares, when the woman holding Lacus at knife point threatens to cut our her tongue, or gouge her eyes out, and see if Kira still loves her then, Kira's immediate response... is of course I'd still love her; she's Lacus.
The Destiny Plan, laid out by Durandal, and worked on by so many, like Aura and Lacus's mother, was (ha ha) destined to fail, and I believe it all comes back to the choices two parents, unrelated to each other, made for the sake of their children. Because Via Hibiki got Kira and Cagalli to the Yamato's and Athha's, and all because Siegel Clyne taught Lacus to value the kindness of a stranger, over the power of your destiny.
Funnily enough, I'm remembering a line Kuzzey says back in SEED, about just how much work went into making Lacus's voice the way it is. Turns out; a lot.
It also makes me wonder if Meer Campbell was something of a backup plan, since she sounds identical to Lacus.
Okay, gushing about the new lore done. Now, let's talk about the awesome.
First off: The Immortal Justice is a Shinn Asuka suit, not an Athrun Zala suit. I don't make the rules, but Athrun never sat his ass down in the Immortal Justice.
Next, Agnes Giebenrath can literally be described as 'Coordinator Flay Allster', and I appreciate her for that.
Then, there's all the callbacks to other characters that had passed away, specifically Nicol and Natarle. Those two had complete maneuvers and tactics named after them. They're gone, but never forgotten.
As I mentioned in my last SEED Freedom post, Athrun did stuff with the Z'Gok that would make Char envious. The way Athrun handled that machine made me think he was Master Asia, Undefeated of the East.
Next, as we all well know by now, the way Athrun managed to get one up on the Black Knights' ability to read his mind; by thinking about having sex with Cagalli.
Next! Once more Mu La Flaga proves himself to be the man who does the impossible... by face-tanking FREAKING REQUIEM WITH THE AKATSUKI! Man practically said he had to stop doing that.
Then, there's the new warship, Millennium. Not only is it state of the art, but Murrue, once she starts captaining it, gets her own assault deck where she controls FREAKING GUNBARRELS! The Millennium is a warship sized Moebius Zero!
Finally, for the last thing I want to gush about: Shinn Asuka. Just... all of him. From the fact that he's calmer, earnest, stands up for Kira, drinks his 'respect' juice, and at the end, when he gets the Destiny Gundam back, he faces off against four of the Black Knights, and kicks their asses... WITHOUT TAKING MAJOR DAMAGE. Not only that, but STELLA LOUSSIER makes a comeback, proving definitively that Shinn Asuka is the Kamille Bidan of the CE era, by protecting Shinn's mind from being probed by the Black Knights, freaking them out by going all nightmare on their asses (which is probably just a representation of them being scared by just how much darkness is in his heart), and then immediately followed by him putting the F91 to shame and using the much meme'd about afterimages to kick ass and take names. Shinn may have lost to them before, but only because he wasn't using the machine literally built for him. Also, before I forget, when Shinn went SEED mode during that same battle, the Black Knights couldn't read his mind. Shinn's instincts are just that good.
Okay. I'm done. I've gushed all I can.

If this makes me cringe, then I am cringe, but I am at least free.

It's probably just me, but TBY's story beats kinda remind me of SEED Destiny. We have the angsty, impulsive teen character (Kosoushi) who's out for blood toward an OP character from the previous series (Kazuki). Maybe Maya is TBY's version of Athrun?
But that's just about the similarities I found though. Somebody else already pointed out that Miwa=Lunamaria and Maris=Rey Za Burrel, I think.
Aaah sorry, I have never watched SEED Destiny so I can’t really answer this :(
Btw, did you like BTL? I still haven’t found the time to watch it
