Abolitionist and women's rights activist Sojourner Truth (c 1797-1883).

In May 1851, Truth delivered an improvised speech at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention in Akron that would come to be known as "Ain't I a Woman?" The first version of the speech was published a month later by Marius Robinson, editor of Ohio newspaper The Anti-Slavery Bugle, who had attended the convention and recorded Truth's words himself. It did not include the question "Ain't I a woman?" even once.

Truth was born into slavery but escaped with her infant daughter to freedom in 1826. She devoted her life to the abolitionist cause and helped to recruit Black troops for the Union Army. Although Truth began her career as an abolitionist, the reform causes she sponsored were broad and varied, including prison reform, property rights and universal suffrage.

Carlotta "Carla" Vasquez

named Carlotta after the Phantom of the Opera character and Vasquez after Maria in West Side Story. She's an aspiring actress and has spent her entire life in dance and voice lessons and doing community theatre.

She and Rachel have known each other forever because of this, and were in countless dance & voice classes together and competitions against each other, and Rachel has been bullying her since they were little kids.

At 13, after Rachel did something to completely humiliate her at a competition (ripped seams out of her costume so it fell apart onstage, also put gum in her hair so she had to cut a lot of it off), Carla had a severe breakdown. She switched to a new dance studio, where she befriended Mike Chang and Brittany pierce, but her parents also moved to Akron to give her a fresh start. Everything was great, she was happy, no one knew about the worst moment of her life. She starts high school, becomes a cheerleader, gets recruited into Vocal Adrenaline by Jesse St James himself, and he and Shelby start preparing her to be the new female lead. She got a solo at nationals. Everything was perfect.

But then, because of something with one of her parents' jobs, they have to move back to Lima. Thankfully no one seems to remember her, except for Rachel Berry, and Carla is able to protect herself by joining the cheerios – the only club in school safe from Rachel Berry. Everything is fine. Thanks to Mike and Brittany, Carla is adopted into the Unholy Trinity and has the combined protection of the cheerios and titans, and she's finally starting to breathe again

In the mid 1800’s the suffragettes started fighting for women’s rights to vote. This all started because women weren’t valued as highly as men and therefore didn’t have equal rights to them. For example women had give all their money to their husbands and weren’t allowed to own their own property. Women became more angry about this and started to fight back.

Seneca Falls Convention

The first convention regarding women’s rights was organised by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. It attracted over 300 women that all agreed that they need to be treated better and given the same opportunities as men within education and work. They ended up signing the Declaration of Sentiments and Grievences that stated that women should be treated equally to men.

After this Stanton formed the National Women suffrage association. The group managed to recruit 90 women in the following year. And they decided to send a letter to the US senate asking to speak to the congress about women’s rights. Their request was refused.

Sojourner Truth

Around 1797 Isabelle Bomfree was born an enslaved person. She managed to run away when she was 20 and she found a family that didn’t agree with slavery. This gave her freedom and allowed he to find her faith. She decided to change her name after this to Sojourner Truth to reflect her passion for fighting for equality. She spoke out against slavery and women’s rights and she managed to gain respect of many because of how good her speeches were even though she couldn’t read or write. Her most famous speech was titled ‘Ain’t I a woman’ which she performed at the women’s rights convention in Akron when white men tried to take over the convention. She was the only women who spoke that had also been personally impacted by slavery.

Charlotte Rollin

The suffragettes started to gain more support at time went on however the biggest challenges faced was by black women. This was because not only were they fighting for gender equality they also needed to fight against racism. A lot of black women struggled to get their voices heard. However in 1869 Charlotte Rollin managed to speak in front of the House of Representatives about how important it was for everyone to have the right to vote. She also wrote an article that said :

“We ask suffrage not as a favor, not as a privilege, but as a right based on the grounds that we are human beings and as such entitled to all human rights”

Linsly School's BJ DePew Hosts Spring Football Evaluation

The Linsly Cadets football team is turning itself into a marquee program. Big wins and a winning record against an increasingly difficult schedule bear that out. So does the growing number of collegiate prospects graduating from Knox Lane in Wheeling. In an effort to provide even more exposure for his players while taking advantage of NCAA’s evaluation period, head coach B.J. Depew devised a plan to get his players in front of some collegiate program eyes. Monday, Linsly hosted a college evaluation spring workout up at the Highlands Sports Complex in Triadelphia. The Cadets, along with Westinghouse Academy near Pittsburgh, and University High School from Morgantown participated. “The idea came about because college recruiting is different from state to state in what schools can and can’t do. In West Virginia, we have flex days and we decided to use one of our flex days to do this,” Depew said. “We partnered with two other schools. James Cowart is a Linsly alum and former member of our staff who is up at Westinghouse.” The Hawks got involved because UHS defensive coordinator Justin Hensley spent time previously on the Linsly coaching staff, so Depew reach out and the Hawks too came north. “We wanted to partner with some schools to work together and make it potentially a more attractive event than just having one school,” Depew noted. “I’ve seen schools in Ohio group together and do a similar thing in a showcase format. “It took a lot of planning and coordination. The colleges responded and said it was a great idea. Not everybody was able to come, but we did get representatives from all three (NCAA) Divisions.” Some of Linsly's top members of its class of 2024 pose for a photo after a camp earlier this year. Hail, West Virginia Getting a Division I representative to attend the evaluation was key, and the Mountaineers were more than willing to make the trek up I-79 to check out the talent on display. But it wasn’t just WVU that showed up. The local programs like Wheeling, West Liberty, and Bethany arrived to do their due diligence, but so did three members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in Clarion, Cal (Pa.) and reigning PSAC champion IUP. Also attending included Mountain East Conference member Fairmont State, along with St. Vincent College and perennial power Washington & Jefferson from the PAC. “We have eight scholarship schools and three Division III schools,” Depew noted. “Some of that was because of the timeliness of the information we got out and travel availability, but there’s definitely rom for this to grow too.” Depew noted that, up until two hours before the eval, a rep from Harvard was set to attend, but had to cancel last minute. Akron was slated to send a rep but was unable to and other FCS and Division II schools were interested and wanted to be kept in the loop for spring 2024. Evaluation Setup Depew admitted the setup was similar to a pro-day workout but with a few changes. Each of the three schools had an entire section of the field dedicated to it, allowing for drills and workouts setup best to showcase the athletes’ skills, as well as technique in different position groups. Impending senior Atley Cowan is ranked as one of the top QBs in West Virginia and performed well at an Elite 11 camp. “That is what we felt was best given we had three teams combined into one practice facility,” Depew said. “There were elements of a pro day to it.” The first half of the evaluation was focused on showcasing athleticism, while the second half was more competition-based, allowing the scouts in attendance to watch the three teams compete against one another in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills. Depew noted it's beneficial for the younger players just getting their feet wet into the recruiting process if they are so inclined, as well as the older players who have already started hitting the offseason camp circuit. “All three schools were able to provide info to every college there,” Linsly said. “From our perspective, every kid we have working out got their name, basic info, academic info, and basic email contact out,” Depew said. “For the older ones who are more serious about the process, it got out additional contact information. oh man.. it has been a minute

how time flies... Just a few years ago, I was dipping my toe into the water of social media with this blog and now fast forward a few years I’m coming back with a much deeper Twitter & TikTok following.

Well hopefully I can put some more information out there and help all those who are lost.  I’m going to tag team this with a youtube vlog and hopefully reach all who are looking for this information.

The three things I want to answer for you in each installment is:

1) What’s going on in the world of college football for college coaches right now?  Hopefully gives you an idea of what their day to day is like

2) What’s going on in my world? well because this is my blog and maybe my story can be helpful to others

3) What should you be doing right now?  Whether you’re a student-athlete, HS coach, or parent... just some quick tips on putting yourself in a great position to maximize the time

so to answer question 1 - we are knee deep in the offseason for coaches.  Signing day has passed, most early action deadlines have passed.  So for a lot of college football recruiting is done.  There are still a ton of places looking, but these are probably a handful of FCS & D2 programs, and a bunch of D3, NAIA, and JUCO.  Most coaches are on an abbreviated schedule, maybe they get into the office a little later than in-season, or they have a 3 day weekend, but this is the time of year they DIVE into cut ups.

They are watching every snap of their season.  They are studying other teams, usually a program or coordinator who’s done really well, and they are trying to figure out how they can get better for next season.  They are making changes to the playbook and prepping for spring ball, but recruiting is really on the back burner unless they are finishing their class later.  They may start looking at the class of ‘24 & ‘25, they’ll host Junior Days (that will be a separate entry, don’t get me started on Junior Days) but for the most part they are focused on spring and watching their current team develop throughout winter training.

What’s been going on in my life??? Well... that’s another story.  Last time I posted I was coaching at Ursinus College, D3 outside of Philadelphia.  Since then, I accepted a QC role at the University of Akron (probably where a lot of you first gave me a follow), from there I was fortunate to get a DC role at Whittier College.  When I first got to Whittier, I didn’t really know what I had gotten myself into.  The roster was really depleted.  27 guys on defense.  After injuries and Co-vid, we went into games with 15-16 healthy bodies.  It was tough to finish a game, let alone compete.  

Our staff did an AMAZING job recruiting, we brought in a class of around 50, no thanks to the administration (more on that later.)  But we hoped it gave us a chance to compete.  We improved but with about 13-15 first years playing on either side of the ball, we were still a few years away from really contending.  That’s when we had the rug pulled out from underneath us.  The administration decided to drop the football program, as well as Golf and Men’s LAX.  There’s a lot I could say about that whole experience because it was really crazy and you wouldn’t believe some of the things that transpired... but that’s another story for another time.  I was fortunate to be able to volunteer at UCLA in the recruiting department where I find myself now.  I am still looking for a full time opportunity but it’s been amazing to learn from and get to know all the great people in this organization.

What should you be doing right now?

If you’re a student-athlete, you have got to be crushing school... if you’re playing a winter sport, focus on that... but taking care of your business.  Junior Days are popping up, whether you’re invited or not.. can make them or not... is not a huge deal.  They are very general and usually have nothing to do with whether you are being recruited their or not.  So take care of business.. if you’re in the class of 23 - FIND A HOME... no d1′s are reaching out this late... find a home

24′s - start to reach out to programs.  Again if you read what coaches are doing right now, they aren’t going to be lighting the phones up yet... but they are building their boards for the future

25′s and younger - you probably won’t hear anything unless you’re the top 1% of HS players who are getting FBS offers.  Stay patient

Parents - be ready for Junior Days, again they aren’t the end all and be all.  But summer camps are coming up in a few months, there are a lot of them... everyone is going to want your money... We’ll talk more in future installments on how to get the most out of your summer camp circuit and hopefully get your son infront of the right people

HS Coaches - keep sending your lists out.  I think it’s really important to find college coaches and get to know them and what their program looks for.  At Whittier, we paid for a handful of services but almost every kid we recruited was from NCSA or Verified Athletics and in the state of California.  Because it fit our footprint, we weren’t going to get a random kid from South Carolina unless that kid was dead set on Southern California and he had money to spend.  In the same way, UCLA has access to such powerful recruiting services... they probably know about your kids already and if they don’t they probably aren’t going to be a fit at a P5 program.  When I was at Akron, we had some good recruiting services but we also relied on uncovering kids through coaches in our footprint.  So it runs the gambit, but educating yourself on your college coach connections will help build rapport with those programs

Sojourner Truth (born Isabella [Belle] Baumfree; November 18, 1797 – November 26, 1883) was an African-American abolitionist and women's rights activist. DEVOtion, Day One

DEVOTIONAL. I called it “a bunch of nerds in a room” last year, and I stand by my previous classification of this excruciatingly nerdy event. Keep it wack, Cleveland.

But indulging in nerdy activities also allows one to see some impressive musical acts, engage in fascinating conversation, and see friends old and new that you’ve been waiting the whole year to get all in their faces calling them what they are: “NERRRRDS.” In short, it’s one of the most weekends of the year.

Fridays at DEVOtional are usually held in the tavern of the Beachland Ballroom, yet so many tickets sold this year that they had to move it to the main room. It was truly surreal. Yet it worked like a charm, and if anything, it just extends the excitement of Saturday, so if it’s what we gotta do to get all those nerds in that goddamn room, I’m good with it.

A good pal of mine, Malcolm Tent, truly opened this year’s installation with a set of “unwanted DEVO songs.” He’d been advertising it on Facebook for at least a week leading up to the event, and it definitely lived up to the hype. While I expected an acoustic set from the times he’s previously played DEVOtional, he instead unleashed a slew of mind-crushing electronic loops straight out of the rubber factory as he gestured the lyrics to “I Desire” like twisted spoken word. David Kendrick, who drummed for DEVO, frankly obliterated the skins for the last half of the set as Malcolm shredded his yowling electric guitar with a loose drumstick. It was beautiful, and dare I say it was the best set of the weekend. But we’ll get to Fight Milk in a bit.

Malcolm was also the one who recruited me to create the art for the back of an album exclusive to this DEVOtional, DEVOted. It’s an intentionally bootleggy compilation of live tracks from past years, and it’s pretty damn DEVO all around. I’m proud of how my back cover turned out, and I’m glad I was able to lend a hand.

The BIG news was this year’s most esteemed first-time attendee, Mark Mothersbaugh himself. I remember the state of disbelief I was in when I saw his name on the DEVOtional flyer when it was first made public. Just about everyone who has ever gone to a DEVOtional had been going back and forth about Mark’s not being there for years, and he finally decided to give it a shot. There he was on Friday night, taking videos of bands on his phone and excitedly talking with his loyal followers. When I reminded him that I fake-punched him in New York last May by waving my fist at him, he took my wrist and yanked it at his chin and made me actually sock him. I could actually feel it in my fingers for a few minutes afterwards. During one of the bands I looked across the room and saw him take a giant bite out of the sleeve someone’s copy of oh, no! it’s DEVO. After the weekend was over I got to see photos on Facebook of him with other people’s phones in his mouth. He. Got. CRUUUUUNK. And it was glorious.

Max got to nerd out to him about Mark’s brother Jim’s old school electronic drum kit from the seventies, and Mark filmed him doing it, so that footage exists on Mark’s phone. Ah, technology.

Very serious.

The Akronauts, who mixed energetic DEVO covers with originals, followed Malcolm. They brought the fun and the funky basslines. Poopy Necroponde, who turned my brain inside out last year, followed, though this year they probably got closer to blowing my ears out! I’m glad my ears got the break they deserved after this weekend, especially from Morgan PC’s hardcore de-vo squelches and voiceboxes! Both bands really bought the fashion, with white jumpsuits and neon blue berets respectively. The latter’s bass player remains one of the coolest women in existence with her stage presence alone.

I completely missed Weird Paul Petroskey’s closing set, which I’d been highly anticipating, because I was too busy having a conversation with an old school University of Akron alum outside, so I bought some of Paul’s CDs to make up for it. That was a reoccurring theme of the weekend: missing things because I was too busy being engaged in gripping talk with cool elders.

For such a shakeup, it ran smoothly as ever. Every act was energized to the max, and there was really was plenty of great conversation to have, whether it was with old friends, new friends, or Mark Mothersbaugh hopped up on Bloody Marys.
