It really bothers me how tech illiterate Gen Z is.

It really bothers me how tech illiterate Gen Z is. And that’s including people born in the weird 1996-2002 era in between millennials and us.

Being able to use social media isn’t at all a substitute for knowing and being able to operate a damn computer. I know I sound like some crotchety developer from the 70s, but it really is terrifying how little some of the people my age and younger know-- and I’m nearly 20. Let’s get this out of the way: the oldest people in Gen Z are around 25. They are adults, and this is a major issue that will soon impact a majority of adults.

Onto the main issue: Generation Z is, as a whole, largely unused to operating computers in easy ways-- using keyboard shortcuts, being able to protect their privacy, being able to access content that isn’t legal (e.x. through torrents), even using Microsoft Office... I’m still unable to let go of 8th grade, 2014-15-- I had to teach one of my classmates how to use certain features of Microsoft Word, keyboard shortcuts, and a mouse. The basic ones. Like right-clicking, ctrl+C and ctrl+V, and using the dictionary feature.

At the time, I was woefully in awe of how stupid she was, and took it as a moment to roll my eyes and feel both smug and disgusted. Now, I know better than to write her off as an airhead who didn’t know something I’d assumed was universal.

I was fortunate enough to have been born in 2000, and to have gone to an elementary school that was still in the odd middle ground between “let’s educate the kindergartners about computers!” and “eh, screw it, we don’t have that much funding and their parents will probably teach them at home anyway.”

I learned the proper method of typing when I was five. We went to our school’s computer lab at least once a week and practiced and learned. I learned about the different parts of a computer (kindergarten edition, so nothing detailed about internal parts, but my parents are software engineers who taught me later down the line).

And then... they just stopped. The last time I, as a kid, did any sort of computer learning or proper keyboarding that was school-initiated was 1st grade. At the latest, that’s the first half of 2008.

For perspective, children born in 2008 are now 12.

I don’t know how else to describe how bad it is. Time is passing. Older people think that Gen Z is “tech literate”, but it simply isn’t true. We are social media literate. We are wary of online advertising (but still fall prey to it, thanks to shifting marketing strategies). We use social platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Tumblr. We care about social issues. But unless we teach ourselves, we know next to nothing about information technology.

Our parents, overall, did not teach us. Schools, in their haste-- whether that be out of sheer laziness or lack of funding or some twisted combination-- failed us.

Putting aside things like piracy of entertainment or being able to use all ten fingers to type, our security is at jeopardy. So many companies take advantage of and actively prey on us for our computer illiteracy and lack of knowledge on digital privacy.

Even I’m not well-informed enough to make a real write-up on it. It’s something I’ve noticed, and something I’ve read enough about and been taught about by my own parents and my own technology classes in college to be afraid of. People can’t do research. They can’t use keywords.

I’m being somewhat overzealous, but it is a problem how quickly basic things like using computer parts, doing in-depth research on your own, and privacy are just not being taught to young kids anymore. I haven’t stepped foot in elementary school in a long time, so maybe things are different now, but I highly doubt five and six year olds of today are being taught about computers via computers instead of using interactive iPads.

This isn’t to say that everyone in Gen Z knows nothing. I am Gen Z. Many, many kids and adults born in Gen Z are fully aware of the ramifications of this issue and others related to it. But there’s just as many, if not more, who aren’t.

TL;DR... There’s a lot Gen Z wasn’t and still isn’t being educated about when it comes to computers and tech, and it’ll definitely lead to problems later down the line.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

For those who haven't played, a landscape is randomly generated, its terrain and the produce gained from it is split between players, and your task is to build the biggest settlement. Trade with players to get the resources you need to build towns and roads, but be wary of whether the items you give them are helping their own progress.

Circuit Superstars

In the absence of a new Micro Machines, Square Enix Collective is publishing this toy-like top down racer. Players control stylised cars in a series of circuit races where they need to consider their pit stop strategy rather than just floor it and hope to reach the finish first. Vehicles will range from classic cars to rally and trucks.

The long-running Pro Evolution Soccer gets a slight esports-driven name change this year, but still aims to deliver the most realistic football available. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout

Published by Devolver Digital, this colourful outing is essentially a Battle Royale game... but without combat. Players control one of 100 little blob people and strive to survive a series of obstacle courses like climbing a hill with boulders falling towards them or crashing through bricks walls that may or may not be solid. If you've ever watched Takeshi's Castle, you get this idea.

Forza Horizon 4: Lego Speed Champions

The Lego Speed Champions expansion adds a whole new region to the best-selling racer where everything is made of (you guessed it) Lego. Players will also be able to hop into Lego vehicles, race around Lego tracks and smash through Lego walls and trees. Because Lego means everything is awesome (And now that song's stuck in your head. Sorrynotsorry).

FIFA 20

Developer: Electronic Arts Platforms: PS4, Xbox One, Switch Release Date: September 27, 2019

This year's FIFA revamps key systems like shooting and AI defending but also adds a brand new FIFA Street-style mode, Volta. This veers away from the realistic, straightforward football we're used to and invites players to be more creative in matches where teams have between three and five players rather than the usual eleven.

Flight Simulator

Microsoft's hyper-realistic aviation simulation returns after more than a decade, this time rendered in impressive 4K visuals. Sit in the cockpit of faithfully recreated vehicles and fly around the world.

This virtual reality title allows you to explore three of vibrant and serene landscapes. As they wander through them, each with their own distinct environments, they can help bring each one to life by watering plants, touching certain objects and interacting with creatures. They can also collect seeds on their adventure and use them to grow an exotic garden of their own.

Garden of the Sea

Developer: Neat Corporation Platforms: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive Release Date: June 10, 2019 (Early Access)

In a game described as a mix between Harvest Moon and Pokémon, players are given a cottage on a small island and are free to live out their life how they see fit. They can grow plants and crops in their garden, or explore the island and meet the native creatures. Unlike Pokémon, interacting with them doesn't require you to battle them in any way -- simply stroke them, feed them and generally befriend them.

Genesis Noir

Technically, this game depicts the Big Bang that started our universe as a gunshot from a cosmic being, one that kills the protagonist's love interest... but since the gameplay does not involve violence and the goal is to prevent her death, I'm going to give it a pass. This stylish adventure sees you exploring Earth from the eyes of someone who exists outside of the universe. The emphasis is on exploration, interacting with the world and generating art as you do so.

Harvest Moon: Mad Dash

Developer: Natsume Platforms: PS4, Switch Release Date: Autumn 2019

An even more casual spin-off of the already laid back Harvest Moon series, Mad Dash is a colour matching puzzle game at its heart. Players are presented with a field seeded with blocks of different coloured crops. Combining those blocks to form larger squares helps the crops grow larger for more points -- for example, combine four cabbages to make one big cabbage, then four big cabbages to make a giant one. Rack up as high a score as possible before the time runs out, and you can call in a friend with co-op mode to help you.

Heave Ho

Developer: LeCartel Studios Platforms: PC, Switch Release Date: Summer 2019

Published by Devolver Digital, this wacky physics-based platformer gives you control of a strange looking creature with two exceedingly long arms. Use the simulated physics to build momentum and swing or flip across the screen to grab hold of the terrain. Only by mastering the mechanics will you complete each course. You can also have up to three friends join in, but coordination will be key to reaching your goal.

Hyperdot

Developer: Tribe Games Platforms: PC, Xbox Release Date: 2019

This minimalist action arcade game is all about dodging. You control a single dot (a HyperDot, if you will) trapped in a circular arena with enemies, projectiles and other hazards. Simply guide your dot around the empty space to avoid any collisions and survive as long as you can. The campaign will have over 100 different levels, each with their own dangers, and a multiplayer mode will challenge you to outlast your friends.

Just Dance 2020

If you haven't heard of Just Dance before, it's a Rayman Raving Rabbids minigame that's got out of hand (true story). In the minigame, players copied the choreography on an on-screen characters in time with the music. Ten years, 28 games and spin-offs, and countless music licensing deals later, you have Just Dance 2020.

Lost Words: Beyond The Page

A 2D platformer set entirely in a little girl’s diary. Players use the words on the page as both platforms and tools to solve the various puzzles that block her progress. The game also has a beautiful story written by Rhianna Pratchett.

Another title about colonisation, but this one is set a little closer to home. Designed to ideally be played by two people (one as the goat, one as the man), each person has a microphone and must scream into it to turn in their direction to steer around a variety of complicated courses, all set in unsuspecting and previously tidy shops. There is, of course, a two-button control scheme for players who want to try it themselves.

Xbox Game Pass is Microsoft’s subscription service for Xbox One owners. It’s designed to be like a “Netflix for games,” where you pay a simple monthly rate and get access to loads of games for download. It’s not to be confused with the Xbox Live Gold membership, which gives users a selection of free games each month.

There has been a huge surge in popularity and profile for Xbox Game Pass since its launch, mainly due to the diverse list of games and first-party exlusives on the service. In fact, Microsoft drops new releases from its own internal studios onto the service on day one! Sea of Thieves was the first example of this, followed by State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3. Since then, the service has seen the day one launch of several other high-profile Xbox exclusives, including Gears 5, The Outer Worlds, and Halo: Reach on the Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Membership to Xbox Game Pass will set you back $9.99 per month. You can now also get an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription for $1 for the first month and $14.99 every month after that. The subscription includes an Xbox Live Gold membership as well as all of the games offered on Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Game Pass for PC. Some of the country’s biggest tech firms and health care organizations have joined together to help facilitate that return to “normal.” The group, called the Vaccine Credential Initiative, wants to ensure that everyone has access to a secure, digital record of their Covid-19 vaccination — like a digital vaccine passport — that can be stored in people’s smartphones. The records could be used for everything from airline travel to entering concert venues.

The coalition comprises a broad range of health care and tech leaders including Microsoft (MSFT), Salesforce (CRM), Oracle (ORCL), Cerner (CERN), Cigna’s (CI) Evernorth, health care software firm Epic and the Mayo Clinic, among others.

The announcement Thursday comes amid a rocky start to the Covid-19 vaccine rollout. Of the 30.6 million doses of vaccines that have been distributed to US hospitals, health centers and pharmacies, only about 10.6 million people had received at least their first dose as of Friday morning, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Although it’s early in the vaccination process, potential use cases for such a technology are already cropping up. Some companies, including Dollar General (DG) and Instacart, plan to pay their workers to get vaccinated. Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner has said that once children have access to vaccines, all district students must get immunized before returning to classrooms. And some experts expect that states and countries currently requiring negative Covid-19 test results for incoming travelers will eventually also accept vaccination records.

“A secure, convenient solution to verify Covid-19 vaccination will play an important role in accelerating a healthy and safe return to work, school and life in general,” said Joan Harvey, president of care solutions at Evernorth, Cigna’s health services business.

The importance of digital records

The Vaccine Credential Initiative wants to create an open-source, standard model for how hospitals, pharmacies and clinics administering Covid-19 vaccines make digital records of immunizations, which can be provided to patients who want them.

Immunizations are typically tracked by writing them down on a paper card for people to store with their important records, and are also kept track of in a patient’s electronic medical records..

But for a number of reasons, the Covid-19 vaccination required developing a different system. For one thing, coronavirus vaccination records will need to be more easily transported if people have to use them to access schools, offices and event venues, making a digital record more practical. They also need to be “interoperable,” meaning all organizations administering the shots should use the same model for recording vaccine credentials.

“It’s not just for health care purposes that you will need this health data,” Paul Meyer, CEO of nonprofit The Commons Project, told Appradab Business. The Commons Project created an app called Common Pass, where people can store digital records of their Covid-19 test results and, eventually, their Covid-19 vaccination record.

“Now you are going to need either your lab results or vaccination data to get on an airplane, to go to school, go to work — real life, non-health-care use cases,” Meyer said. “And it needs to be in a standard form so when you’re presenting it, people actually understand, ‘Oh, it was the Pfizer vaccine that you got.'”

The Covid-19 vaccination record also needs to be verifiable and secure in a way that was less important for past vaccination records — otherwise, a person could try to fake having gotten the Covid-19 vaccine by using someone else’s record, Meyer said.

Ultimately, patients will likely receive an encrypted, digital copy of the vaccination record — think a QR code — that can be stored in a digital wallet. That way, an airport gate agent for example, could confirm that a person was vaccinated without viewing all their personal health information.

It’s not the first time Big Tech has gotten involved in the effort to fight coronavirus. Early on in the pandemic, Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG) joined forces to develop a bluetooth-based system to notify users if they’d been exposed to Covid-19. But the tool’s success was challenged by slow and spotty adoption.

The role of tech firms

With the Vaccine Credential Initiative, the tech companies involved in the effort will play a key role in ensuring widespread use. Firms like Microsoft and Oracle manage the tech infrastructure for many large health care systems, and can build in the standards for Covid-19 vaccine credentialing.

“That’s why it’s exciting to have partners like Epic and Cerner and Oracle and Microsoft that are the tech platforms that power, if you will, so much of health care,” Meyer said. “Them saying, ‘We’re going to implement the standards,” is really them saying, ‘We’re going to help our customers issue these verifiable credentials.’ And it starts to turn into something that’s very scalable.”

Another potential pitfall of such a system is inequality; someone without a smartphone would be unable to access a convenient, digital record of their vaccine. However, the Vaccine Credential Initiative says it plans to provide such patients with a paper printed with a QR code containing the record.

“Just as Covid-19 does not discriminate based on socio-economic status, we must ensure that convenient access to immunization records crosses the digital divide,” Brian Anderson, chief digital health physician at nonprofit research organization MITRE, a member of the initiative, said in a statement.
