I've deleted tiktok off my phone and now mainly use Instagram reels. I get a bunch of content related to Japan (makes sense I'm moving there) but omfg the comments are like the trenches. Some are purely racist to Japanese citizens and others are such Japan dick riders that it's insane.

Anyway recently got a post about a white guy complaining that TOKYO has gotten too "foreign" and that he doesn't want Japan to "lose" their culture. I've got a lot of thoughts on this but nowhere to put them so here they are:

I'm literally losing my mind at how many people think Japan is this orientalist non-westernized country when Japan has westernized itself since the 1890s. Losing my mind at foreigners in Japan complaining that there are more foreigners in Japan and acting like they've been in Japan since before it when they moved there in like 2010.

Saw someone comparing Japan to Hawai'i in how it's losing its culture (truly mindboggling considering what Japan has done to Okinawa) and another guy who's name was literally Noah saying "Americans should keep their bs out of japan no one wants your stupid westernization" like dude ur name is Noah.

Also, no part of America has "westernized" Japan since the early 20th century, and Japan's "westernization" is entirely Japan's own doing for wanting to be in proximity to whiteness. No other culture country or people gets to decide where Japan's culture gets to go, that is solely up to the Japanese people (mind you not the government but the PEOPLE)

Most people obsessed with Japanese culture have never read an actual book on Japan that goes beyond "Japan has shrines that worship the kami or spirits of the world" and "being polite is important as a tourist in Japan". If they did, then they'd know that during the pre-war era and throughout the wartime era, the Japanese government purposefully put out cultural propaganda in order to boost nationalism. They wanted Japan to seem entirely unique and therefore more special than all other Asian countries. This is not to say Japan does not have beautiful cultural traditions that extend centuries, but largely those have been transformed and marketed to Japanese and foreign tourists alike.

Shrines and shrine groups donate and mass support alt-right-wing groups in Japan. The over-politeness culture is part of the awful workplace conditions and suicide rates. Actual Japanese people have spoken to these facts but that does not mean they do not like their home culture. Globalization/modernization will not westernize Japan. Women's rights, LGBT rights, labor rights, and immigrants' rights, will not westernize Japan. They will save Japan.

These Japan-obsessed right-wingers will ignore the hundreds of years of protests and civil rights groups to create an orientalist idea of Japan. None and I mean NONE of those people care about Japan, Japanese culture, or Japanese people, they only care about living out their orientalist fantasies while actual Japanese people living their daily lives are simply background props.

We need to stop pretending Japanese people are not their own people with history, culture, and movements.

Sadly I cannot find the twitter page that often posts modern-day Japanese news that normally is not posted by other news organizations. But if any of you remember it please send me the page so I can add it as I believe it is an important resource. Or just reblog with it!

Look, whether you like or dislike Japan, remember it's a country with people just like anywhere else. Do not dismiss the work activists have done in Japan. Do not say Japan "needs this political movement", instead talk about how Japanese progressive groups need international support and recognition (mind you don't say this about any country, especially largely nonwhite countries!!! you are completely ignoring and rejecting the work millions have put into social change!!! instead talk about those people!!! talk about those movements!!! don't let their efforts be forgotten!!! don't let any government tell you these movements are new!!! THEY AREN'T!!!!). One of the biggest ways we can create change and push away alt-right groups and people from any place is by ruining their image of those places.

Do NOT let the alt-right in Japan convince you Japan is purely homogenous and that Japan is the best country in the world. Do not let the Japanese government erase the Ainu, the Ryukyuan, Immigrants, Zainichi Koreans, LGBTQ+ citizens, women's rights, the Burakumin, the poor, and the communists/progressives of Japan. Do not let ANY country erase that history!

DO NOT LET JAPAN PLAY THE VICTIM TO "WESTERIZATION"

Okay so, it’s been a really long ass time since I posted something and since I got into Pizza Tower I give you.. Koji Karashizuke! A man made from my love of Tokukatsu media especially the Kamen Rider series and he’s based after one of the tastes being Umami, Koji is actually a deadbeat study-abroad student who came from Okinawa of the Ryukyu Islands and into America, he now currently works at Peppino’s Pizza and lives inside of it as well due to being broke as hell, but what people don’t know about him and or don’t really care about is that he comes from a lineage of magical guardians protecting humanity from all forces of evil in every shape and form which thus gave birth to his alter-ego.. Umami-Rider!! And now he’s constantly juggling his personal work life, his own personal day-to-day life, and his life as Umami-Rider, but he doesn’t exactly mind the perks and risks of it.

Personality-Wise? He’s kind of like your typical shonen jump protagonist, except the thing. He’s actually kind of. Not like that. Yeah, He’s very ambitious and very energetic but he can come off as very brash, naïve, harsh, delinquent-esque, and due to being an incredibly emotional person he can be very quick to irritation which can quickly lead to anger but despite that he has a good sense of empathy towards other people, willing to save those in danger as much as he could, showing he is a kind-hearted person despite his shortcomings and behavior and that he’s willing to throw himself onto all sorts of harm to save somebody from something like a paper-cut and degrade himself for the benefit of the happiness for his peers, so he cares more about people than himself. Which is rather.. concerning!

The Black Suneater Dragon Tamaki-a medium sized Black Dragon with a Blue Sheen, lilac colored underbelly, Dark blue eyes almost black, White Horns With 2 golden rings on each horn, and white claws. Magic: Manifest-he can manifest physical characteristics of anything he eats, though in dragon form it transfers into a ball of Energy He can shoot at appointments. Form: Elf/ Rider: Hero Mirio

The Pink Acid Dragon Mina-a Medium sized Pink Dragon with black eyes that have yellow iris's, Yellow Horns curved in the middle in a square pattern, underbelly and claws. Magic: Acid-In Dragon form she can shoot Acid out of her mouth, in her other form she can produce acid from her hands and feet. Form: Human-she is really bad at shape shifting so it turns out as the Pinky we know and love/ Riders: Tailor Sero

The Yellow Thunder Dragon Kaminari-a Medium sized Yellow Dragon with yellow eyes, White underbelly, Black Horns, and claws. Magic: Electrifacation-in Dragon Form he can Create Electricity from his mouth, in human form he can generate it from his whole body. Form: Human/ Riders: Wizard-Siren Hybrid Shinso and sometimes Wizard-Bard Mic, Wizard Aizawa, and unicorn shifter Eri

Golden Dragon King Fatgum-A Giant Plump Golden Dragon with golden eyes, white underbelly, horns with a single orange ring on both, and claws. Magic: Fat absorption-Anything he eats turns into fat on his Hyde he can absorb Shock waves and impacts with his body fat. Form: Human/ Rider: N/A

The Bone Dragon Queen Ryukyu-a Huge bone colored Dragon with a Platinum colored underbelly, Stone colored claws and golden eyes. Magic: Bone-her Hyde is as hard and sharp as bone. Form: Human-the headress she wears is her crown/ Rider: N/A

The Purple Sky Dragon Nejire-a Medium sized Periwinkle Colored Dragon with an Spiral shaped Aquamarine horns, dark yellow claws, pale aquamarine underbelly and Blue eyes. Magic: Wave Motion-she can convert her vitality into energy and release it into powerful spiral shockwaves in even helps her to fly in her other form./ Form: Sky Nymph/ Rider: Archer Yuyu

NOTES: In This Au Tamaki is the first born son of the Dragon King and Queen(it's an open arranged marriage so she can date the Selkie named Selkie) and heir to the Throne(after he marries Mirio), Nijire was supposed to be Tamaki's fiance but she fell in love with an Archer named Yuyu, while Tamaki fell for his childhood friend and hero Mirio. So they both agreed to end their engagement. Kirashima and Tetsutesu are twins and the second born of the Dragon King and Queen with equal Rights to the Throne. However Prince Kirashima fell in love with Prince Bakugo of the Barbarian Kingdom and decided to Rule the Barbarian Kingdom with him. Prince Tetsutesu Fell in love with one of Prince Shoto's knights Kendo and decided to advocate his right to the Throne to settle down with her and work as a local blacksmith and have children. Kaminari and Mina are dragons but not Royalty. Kaminari is from a Noble family while Mina is from a commoner family. Kaminari will eventually settle down and live a peaceful life with his husband Shinso running their own magic shop. Mina will eventually settle down with Sero run their own Tailor Shop and have children.
