Haunted States of America: Michigan
Tumblr media
Haunts of the Upper Great Lakes (1997) by Dixie Franklin
A bit of superstition haunts most of us -- a remnant perhaps of the memories of chillingly scary ghost stories told to us in our childhood. Northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula have more than their share of ghosts and haunted spaces: from Lotta, the mysterious 'shady lady of the night' in Hurley, Wisconsin; to the ghost of Mary Green, who apparently thinks she is still the captain of the Delta Queen, an elegant paddlewheel boat that sails the Mississippi River today; to the mystery light that appears along a lonely road near Paulding, Michigan; to the various shades and ghostly occupants of homes and inns on Mackinac Island and across the Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. There are haunted lighthouses, haunted mansions and inns, and haunted woods -- all waiting for you in Haunts of the Upper Great Lakes!
Check out these other books about haunts in Michigan!

Rage ride or suicide mission?
It's a weird world. Where basically you can be upset and go on a simple fucking drive to solve some kind of soul searching, but today was different. Small issues in my home life cause me to be on a downward spiral. First 20 minutes of my ride were cool calm and collected. Blasting Deftones-Change while the rage of the day built up inside me. Slowly feeling myself become either on the rage side or upset side. Couldn't really tell quite at this point. I hit exit for Wade Green and i literally felt the rage building. I keep taking turns and enjoying the feeling of it burn through my veins. A little further into my ride i feel the burning intensify worse than i've ever felt. I immediately start crying. It was a weird mix of emotions that i've never felt. Before i knew it, I started turning on roads i knew had the curviest turns and decent amount of traffic. I had some level of consciousness until i hit a turn and felt an emotional blackout. I was crying so hard at that point that i couldn't see along with my mind racing from blacking out from any kind of normal thinking. As i am racing down Harmony Grove Rd, one of the curviest roads from Bartow to Paulding county i felt myself loosing grip on the wheel. I couldn't tell if it was some kind of troubled 13 year old in me that knew what the easiest was to no pain was or if i was serious. I cannot believe i was so close to death. I called my childhood best friend due to me quite literally scaring my partially conscious side. I swerved when i answered due to not being clear on my intentions of the call. I swear somewhere deep inside i wanted to crash. Subconsciously, i wanted to. I wasn't sure, but maybe.

The man who was in charge of over 100 dogs is now in jail in Paulding County, without bond. The dogs were rescued from the man’s property and sent to hospitals and shelters for rehabilitation.
Vincent Lemark Burrell, 55, is charged with cruelty to animals and dog fighting, both felonies.
Paulding County Sheriff’s deputies found 106 dogs, mostly pit bulls, at Burrell’s home on Old Cartersville Road.
According to the sheriff’s office, “extremely heavy” logging chains and thick collars were used to tie the dogs to trees and metal stakes in the ground.
Investigators said some of the dogs were clearly malnourished, but others were strong and aggressive toward the weaker dogs.
They also told Channel 2′s Brian Mims the home where the dogs were staying wasn’t fit for humans or animals — adding that the presence of feces and urine was so strong, they had to wear protective gear while searching the property.
In a statement, Paulding County Sheriff Gary Gulledge said, “In cases like these, we have to conduct a lengthy and thorough investigation. I am thankful these dogs are safe now. The dark and sinister world of dog fighting is a despicable culture that has no place in our culture.”
The home is in a rural area, surrounded by woods and well off Old Cartersville Road.
A neighbor, who declined an interview, told us she always heard a lot of barking.
Deputies also say the home the dogs were staying in wasn’t fit for humans or animals. The sheriff’s office expects to file more than 100 additional counts of cruelty and dog fighting charges against Burrell.

36-year-old Nathaniel Walter Radimak of Los Angeles*** was arrested by CHP’s Major Crimes Unit in Torrance on Sunday.***
He was booked with an assault with a deadly weapon charge and in addition, Radimak has two outstanding warrants. His bail was set at $5,175,000 for his alleged crimes.

2 - Is America’s crime problem everyone committing one crime or is it a tiny minority that commits crime after crime and won’t stop until incarcerated?
Nathaniel Walter Radimak is originally from Rome, New York, according to a 2011 article in the Utica Observer-Dispatch. At that time, Radimak was wanted on multiple charges in Cicero, New York, including “felony third-degree robbery, sixth-degree conspiracy and second-degree harassment.” The newspaper wrote that Radimak, known as Nate Radimak, had a “lengthy criminal record.”
Radimak was also arrested in New York in 2007 and 2008 on charges including unlawful imprisonment, attempted assault, petit larceny and criminal mischief, in Onondaga County, court records show. The outcome of those cases, along with the 2011 case, were not immediately available.
Public records show that Radimak has lived in several states, including Texas, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Oregon and Hawaii, along with multiple parts of California and New York, including Syracuse and Rochester, New York, and San Diego and Sacramento, California.
Radimak was arrested in Arizona in 2016 on assault and threatening charges, according to court records. The disposition of that case is listed as “other” in court records viewed by Heavy. In 2010, Radimak was arrested on an assault charge in Iron County, Utah, according to The Daily Spectrum.
In Pennsylvania, Radimak was arrested in 2009 on theft charges, according to court records. He was arrested in Ohio in 2007, also on theft charges, according to court records viewed by Heavy. The outcome of the Pennsylvania case was not immediately available. He received a suspended sentence in Ohio, according to court records.
Radimak was also arrested in 2009 in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on a petit theft charge, according to court records vieewd by Heavy. That misdemeanor case was eventually dismissed after Radimak was arrested in New York and jailed in an unrelate case, records show.  https://heavy.com/news/nathaniel-radimak/

Urgent need for neighborhood mediation
Courtney and Nicole Mallery’s story has all the makings of an egregious civil rights case.
The Black ranchers escaped hurricane-ravaged Houston on a quest to farm a quiet piece of land in rural El Paso County, a plot they named Freedom Acres Ranch. But things quickly devolved.
The Mallerys’ white neighbors, the couple alleges, are terrorizing them at their home, threatening them with guns, running them off the road, poisoning their livestock.
The local sheriff’s office, they say, is complicit in this harassment and ignores their pleas for help.***
A review of court filings and interviews, though, paints a more complicated picture of the situation in the small community 40 minutes east of Colorado Springs. It’s in part a dispute among neighbors, with dozens of allegations of misconduct on both sides and deep mistrust over the others’ intentions. Neighbors say the Mallerys’ actions have been the catalyzing force behind the tension, while the couple says they’re being targeted due to their race.
Law enforcement has seemingly become fed up after responding to 170 calls to the area in a two-year span. Deputies repeatedly noted the Mallerys’ erratic behavior and unreliable testimony, according to records released this week — even encouraging neighbors to move for their own peace of mind.*** https://www.denverpost.com/2023/02/18/black-ranchers-colorado-courtney-nichole-mallery/

At least 20 women who were victims of sex trafficking and sexual abuse at Jeffrey Epstein properties were paid through JPMorgan Chase accounts, according to a new court filing.
The women were allegedly abused and trafficked at properties in the U.S. Virgin Islands, New York, and elsewhere between 2003 and 2019.
The women received payments that totaled, collectively, more than $1 million, according to the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Justice, which entered the filing on Feb. 15.***
Then-U.S. Virgin Islands Attorney General Denise George brought a case against JPMorgan Chase in late 2022, alleging the company helped Epstein carry out crimes including sex trafficking. George was fired shortly after, but the case is moving forward.
The new filing is a less redacted version of the first amended complaint, which had been entered into the docket previously.
Evidence shows JPMorgan officials were aware Epstein was an “extremely high-risk client” but decided to keep servicing his accounts “because of his vast wealth and connections with other high net worth individuals,” according to the complaint.***
Staley, head of JP Morgan’s Private Bank, exchanged approximately 1,200 emails with Epstein from his company’s email account. The communications show a close relationship and friendship and “even suggest that Staley may have been involved in Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation,” Virgin Islands authorities said, noting that Staley visited Epstein’s island multiple times.
In one exchange, Staley said he had arrived at Little St. James, the island. Several months later, Staley said, “Say hi to Snow White.”
“What character would you like next?” Epstein asked.
“Beauty and the Beast,” Staley replied.
“Well one side is available,” Epstein said.
At another point in time, Staley wrote: “I realize the danger in sending this email. But it was great to be able, today, to give you, in New York City, a long heartfelt, hug.”***  https://www.theepochtimes.com/20-women-sexually-abused-at-jeffrey-epstein-properties-paid-through-jpmorgan-accounts-filing_5062845.html

The FBI has been investigating and working to contain a malicious cyber incident on part of its computer network in recent days, according to people briefed on the matter.
FBI officials believe the incident involved an FBI computer system used in investigations of images of child sexual exploitation, two sources briefed on the matter told CNN.
“The FBI is aware of the incident and is working to gain additional information,” the bureau said in a statement to CNN. “This is an isolated incident that has been contained. As this is an ongoing investigation the FBI does not have further comment to provide at this time.”
FBI officials have worked to isolate the malicious cyber activity, which two of the sources said involved the FBI New York Field Office – one of the bureau’s biggest and highest profile offices. The origin of the hacking incident is still being investigated, according to one source.*** https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/17/politics/fbi-cyber-incident-computer-network

Two U.K. Catholics, one of whom is a priest, were acquitted Thursday of all charges against them after they were accused of breaking the law for praying in front of an abortion clinic.
The two were represented by legal counsel from the faith-based law firm Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF UK) at the Birmingham Magistrates’ Court in Birmingham, about a three-and-a-half-hour drive northwest from London.
Jeremiah Igunnubole, legal counsel for ADF UK, said in a Feb. 16 statement that “today’s court case is of great cultural significance. This isn’t 1984, but 2023 — nobody should be criminalized for their thoughts, for their prayers, for peaceful expression on a public street.”
Both Father Sean Gough — a priest of the Archdiocese of Birmingham — and Isabel Vaughan-Spruce, co-director of March for Life UK, were charged with violating a local Public Spaces Protection Order that censors speech in the area around a Birmingham abortion clinic.***
The charges against both Gough and Vaughan-Spruce were eventually dropped because of insufficient evidence against them, Elyssa Koren, legal communications director for ADF UK, told CNA Thursday.
However, even though the charges were dropped, the Crown Prosecution Service — which is the government’s prosecutors in England and Wales — still could have reinstated charges if more evidence were to be discovered.
Both Spruce and Gough had the legal right to pursue a formal acquittal in court in a case where the government may be able to reinstate proceedings against them, so they did, Koren said.
“Because of the legal ambiguity that this created, both Isabel Vaughan-Spruce and Father Sean Gough stated their intention to have their charges formally acquitted, which happened today,” Koren told CNA.*** https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/253665/two-uk-catholics-acquitted-after-being-charged-for-praying-in-front-of-abortion-clinic

Lot of senseless death in one family in one week
IRMO, S.C. (WIS) - It was in the Kroger parking lot off of Saint Andrews Road in Irmo where 26-year-old Alexandria Cress Borys took her last breath.
She was shot and killed on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, approximately six days after her brother died from a gunshot wound.
WIS spoke with Borys’ husband, Tyler, who respectfully declined an interview but agreed to speak on what happened.
According to her husband, Borys was shopping at Kroger with her sister-in-law, niece, and nephew.
After packing groceries into the car shortly before 4 p.m., Tyler said an argument broke out in the parking lot between his wife and a stranger, later identified as 23-year-old Christina Harrison.
“From what I have pieced together, they had either concluded the argument or Alex was walking away. It’s indicating she was shot with her back turned,” said Tyler on Thursday.
Harrison surrendered to the Irmo Police Department (IPD) before Borys was pronounced deceased at the scene around 5:30 p.m. IPD has since charged her with murder, unlawful carrying of a pistol, and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.*** https://www.wistv.com/2023/02/17/mother-shot-killed-kroger-parking-lot-she-didnt-deserve-die/

An Indiana jury has convicted a woman on rape and murder charges after she met a couple on a dating app, hosted a threesome in her home that turned deadly, and then ordered pizza while a victim's body lay upstairs, according to authorities.
The Vanderburgh County jury on Wednesday found Heidi Kathleen Carter, 37, guilty on six counts, including two counts of rape;. three counts of criminal confinement; and one count of aiding, inducing or causing murder for killing Tim Ivy, 50, and raping a woman inside her home on Stinson Avenue with her boyfriend, Carey Hammond.***
Afterward, Carter and Hammond invited a housekeeper to their Stinson Avenue home to clean it. The housekeeper noticed blood on Carter's shoes and a firearm in her hand. She was told to clean two bedrooms, and then Carter and Hammond ordered pizza.
Upstairs, the housekeeper heard a female voice crying for help. She also "went to sit down on what she thought was a pile of pillows and blankets" and noticed it was a body, the arrest report states. When the housekeeper asked to leave, Hammond and Carter sat her down and told her she could not leave and that she had "better listen" to Hammond. Eventually, she was able to escape and found a state trooper to respond.*** https://www.foxnews.com/us/indiana-woman-convicted-on-rape-murder-charges-after-threesome-fantasy-turns-deadly

Austin is barely part of Texas
Some Austin City Council members are speaking out about the police department's vacancies and ongoing problems at the 911 call center after a chaotic scene unfolded downtown on Saturday night.
Street racers took over an intersection at South Lamar Boulevard and Barton Springs Road, drifting in the middle of the street and setting off fireworks as throngs of people looked on at the mayhem.
One law enforcement officer was injured and several police cars were damaged in the fracas.***
Council Member Alison Alter told the Austin American-Statesman that she happened upon the street takeover and called 911, but ended up on hold for 28 minutes.
The Austin Police Department's emergency communications division has been dealing with a staffing crisis for several months, with the 911 call center lowering its minimum staffing requirements last August due to "unprecedented vacancy rates."
In October, the average hold time for 911 calls in Austin was two-and-a-half minutes. Only about two-thirds of 911 calls were answered within 15 seconds that month, far below the national standard of 90% in 15 seconds or less.
Kelly and Alter were the only two council members this week to vote against a one-year contract extension between the city and the Austin Police Association.
Nine other council members voted in favor of the one-year extension on the current contract, which will expire at the end of March.***
Austin's city council and then-Mayor Steve Adler voted to slash APD's funding by about one-third during the 2020 riots at the height of the "defund the police" movement. That vote was supported by an activist coalition led by groups including the Austin Justice Coalition. APD's funding was later restored in order to comply with a state law passed in 2021, but by then, officers had left APD in droves, specialized units were reduced or disbanded, and cadet classes had been canceled, so the departed officers could not be replaced.
Additionally, Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza has indicted more than a dozen APD officers for actions taken to quell the 2020 riots, which damaged the state capitol, blocked major thoroughfares downtown, and threatened police headquarters.   https://www.foxnews.com/us/austin-police-911-staffing-levels-questioned-street-racers-take-major-intersection-injure-cop

How can you call rape “grooming?”
After a series of GB News exclusives forced Cllr. Dominic Beck to stand down as the Labour Party’s parliamentary candidate for Rother Valley in December, questions have been raised about how the local Labour Party came to select him.
This broadcaster revealed that Cllr. Emma Hoddinott, who was deputy leader of the council when it was found to be “in denial” about the extent of the town’s child sexual exploitation scandal, was on the constituency’s selection committee that put Beck forward for the seat.
But GB News now has evidence that the rot goes deeper, exposing that four serving Councillors from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC) attended a seminar outlining in “explicit detail” the town’s sex-grooming gangs scandal in 2005, but failed to speak up, citing police pressure.***
The case study, delivered to the councillors in April 2005, said: “‘Julie’ first became known to the project [Risky Business] when she was 12 years old due to her ‘friendship’ with other vulnerable young women known to the project. At this time her ‘boyfriend’ was a 24 year old male who was known along with his brother for the grooming and violence towards young women in Rotherham.”
It detailed poor attendance at school, adding: “Julie has attended hospital on numerous occasions often unaccompanied by an appropriate adult and has reported that she has been raped twice.
“On one occasion that Julie was missing from home she was found by the local police in the car of one of the perpetrators at the back of an unused building, no arrests were made. When speaking to her worker the following day Julie disclosed she had been sexually assaulted by two of his friends and there were drugs in the boot of the vehicle.”
Julie’s suffering was explained in “explicit detail” at the meeting.*** https://www.gbnews.uk/news/revealed-senior-rotherham-councillors-knew-and-stayed-silent-about-towns-grooming-gangs-scandal-exclusive-in-depth-investigation/439769

Only a sentencing factor
The charges against Alec Baldwin and Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed have been downgraded, removing a potential five-year prison sentence for both in the Santa Fe case involving the fatal shooting of the film’s cinematographer.
On Friday, the Santa Fe District Attorney formally downgraded the second of two charges, which included a firearm enhancement. That charge, lawyers for Baldwin and Gutierrez-Reed argued in a motion filed earlier this month, was based on New Mexico law that passed following Halyna Hutchins’ death on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in October 2021.***
The involuntary manslaughter charges remain in place, but the firearm enhancement from the second charge has been dropped, taking a possible five-year prison sentence for both off the table. They both still face an involuntary manslaughter charge that comes with a maximum of 18 months in prison.
“In order to avoid further litigious distractions by Mr. Baldwin and his attorneys, the District Attorney and the special prosecutor have removed the firearm enhancement to the involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of Halyna Hutchins on the Rust film set,” Heather Brewer, spokesperson for the New Mexico First Judicial District Attorney, said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “The prosecution’s priority is securing justice, not securing billable hours for big-city attorneys.”*** https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/rust-shooting-alec-baldwin-charges-downgraded-hannah-gutierrez-reed-1235330265/

Feds can do things; who’s a fed?
A Teller County District judge ruled Wednesday that the county sheriff isn’t violating Colorado law by allowing his deputies to conduct immigration enforcement through an agreement with the federal government.
The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado sued Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, asserting that the sheriff’s office participation in what’s called a 287(g) agreement violates the state constitution and a law passed in 2019, which limits local law enforcement cooperation with U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. The law prevents immigrants who are jailed from being held beyond their release dates solely at the request of ICE for civil immigration arrest — a signed judge’s warrant would be required.
But Teller County District Court Judge Scott Sells ruled that deputies who were trained by ICE through the 287(g) agreement — four in Teller County — are “de facto federal officers when performing functions as Designated Immigration Officers under the 287(g) agreement.” He stated in his ruling that the sheriff can legally enter into this type of agreement without violating state law.
And, “I find it significant that neither the Sheriff or Jail Commander have authority to enforce immigration law or supervise the TCSO deputy when he or she is acting as a DIO under the 287(g) Jail Enforcement Model,” Sells wrote.
The ACLU disagrees and plans to take the case to the Court of Appeals, continuing the years-long legal case.
“We are disappointed that the trial court upheld the Teller County Sheriff’s 287g program,” Mark Silverstein, ACLU of Colorado legal director, said in a written statement. “We remain steadfast in our claim that the Sheriff’s program of enforcing federal immigration law violates the Colorado Constitution as well as a Colorado statute.”*** https://www.denverpost.com/2023/02/22/ice-immigration-teller-county-colorado-aclu-jail-detainer/

Lottery pick immunity?  Sounds like just no evidence of intent.
There was one glaring question raised by Tuesday’s courtroom testimony detailing Brandon Miller’s involvement in the shooting death of a woman last month in Tuscaloosa: Why hasn’t the Alabama basketball star been charged with a crime?
Did Miller merely demonstrate poor judgment the night of the fatal shooting, when he allegedly brought teammate Darius Miles his handgun after Miles texted asking Miller to do so? Or does allegedly delivering the gun used to kill 23-year-old Jamea Jonae Harris potentially make Miller an accessory to murder?*** https://sports.yahoo.com/why-alabamas-brandon-miller-has-not-been-charged-with-a-crime-223931989.html

West Metro Driving School
One of my favorite perks being a part of the Paulding Chamber is getting to shoot the Grand Openings / Ribbon Cutting events of all of the new businesses in the area. Through this organization, I have got to meet so many people and local business owners. This past Friday was Veterans Day and also the Ribbon cutting of the West Metro Driving School in Dallas, Georgia.
Shelbia asked that I take the event photos on behalf of the Paulding Chamber and I gladly accepted the opportunity. This is a beautiful state of the art driving school, and the best part is that it is literally down the road from my studio.
The event was a lot of fun and I got some awesome photos of this event as well as the interior and exterior of this facility. Enjoy the photos!

That said, it’s no secret city officials would like to see the jail gone from downtown where revitalization efforts have brought about new condos, apartments, restaurants, offices, hotels and shops. Henry called for a “truly transparent discussion” with Allen County officials, but said it’s the county, not the city to make other decisions. Best idiom synonyms for clarify are make it clear, make clear and shed light. Henry said the county needs a “new state of the art facility” that would be comprehensive and restorative, addressing mental health, addiction and life skills as well as incarceration.” Monday, Mayor Tom Henry weighed in on the debate with a letter. With a jail within viewing distance of several schools, it would only reinforce the school-to-prison pipeline narrative. They say it’s insulting the commissioners would designate ground on the city’s southeast side, a heavily Black and brown community, sending the wrong message to its residents and school children at Prince Chapman Academy and Southwick. Opposition groups including three city council members have blasted the commissioners for choosing the Allen County Sheriff’s training ground at Adams Center and Paulding roads. On July 19, three city council members – Sharon Tucker, Glynn Hines and Michelle Chambers – held a rally on Paulding Road in opposition to locating the new jail at the Allen County Sheriff’s training facility nearby. Last week, the Allen County Council took its first public step in making the financing decision at its monthly meeting. The commissioners have done what they were told to do – identified a location for the jail or jail complex, hired a construction manager, hired Elevatus Architecture to design a new jail and contracted with Baker Tilly municipal advisors in Indianapolis to come up with ways to finance the new jail which could cost between $300 and $350 million.

DTIYS Contest Prize: Rllyaangrlly
Here is the first of the one-shots promised to the three winners of the DTIYS event I put on recently. (Thank you guys for being patient with me, btw. I’m a very slow writer, and you’re seeing it in action). Just as the title states, this one is for @rllyaangrlly, based on her requests.
This was a ton of fun and gave me an opportunity to not only shake some writing rust, but work with topics I don’t normally explore. More than anything, I was able to try to emulate the vibes Brit gives these characters in her own art/writing. I wish I had a better word for it, but I’ve always felt like Brit has a certain “aesthetic” with the IZ characters through her drawing style, the situations she puts them in, and her overall portrayal of their personalities. I’ve always adored it, and it was an honor to be able to try my hand at writing it.
Story is under the cut.
Characters: Dib, Zim, Gaz
Relationships: ZaGr, ZaDf
Warnings: minor injuries
Words: 3,706
Absurdity
The car’s engine and the drone of its wheels on the highway were the only sounds that passed between the three. The radio hadn’t been turned on, and no one had the gall nor the desire to change that. Not Zim, who was turned almost completely towards the window in the passenger seat, nor Gaz in the backseat. They drove along in heavy silence as Dib stared stonily ahead of him at the stretch of road, hands gripping the wheel numbly.
Dating. They’re… dating.
The idea was positively absurd to him. Not only did it feel weirdly out of the realm of possibility, but it felt wrong, somehow. Like some sort of tasteless prank. When Zim had told him, he’d half expected the camera crew from Punk’d to come parading around the corner, led by Ashton Kutcher, to point and laugh at the look on Dib’s face. “Can you believe it?! Your best friend—alien best friend—and your little sister! You totally fell for it!”
That almost would have been better. Cruel and mortifying, maybe, but better. At least then, he wouldn’t be sitting behind the wheel of the car trying to make sense of it while the two pretended not to notice from inches away. But it wasn’t a prank. Hell, Dib wasn’t famous enough to be on Punk’d anyway. Maybe someday… but not today.
A little part of him had high hopes for the series of paranormal investigation videos he and Zim had strung together. Lately, that little part of him had stopped feeling so childish, too. Their following had risen significantly over the last few months, gaining more and more traction as people tuned in. Suddenly, their modest little support net of viewers was in the hundreds. Then the thousands. Then the hundred-thousands. Truth be told, Zim and Dib hadn’t really come across anything of substance in their investigations, but their newer viewers weren’t exactly around for solid proof of the paranormal, anyway. It hadn’t taken long for the two to realize that most of the channel’s appeal came from the dripping sarcasm and witty banter directed at one another.
“Chemistry” was an apt word, and it got thrown around a lot. Zim and Dib, quite by accident, had become the up-and-coming best friend duo in the paranormal community. And with each new investigation, they garnered more and more recognition.
That’s where they were headed now, towards Ottawa National Forest to investigate the latest hot spot Dib’s research had led him to. The “Paulding Light” was a strange phenomenon, appearing in a single spot in the woods and taking form of a bright glow before fading off into the darkness of the night. Though plenty of locals could attest to having seen it, no one could feasibly explain it. Dib was determined to catch it on camera. Or at least he had been, before Zim had dropped the bomb on him right before leaving the house.
Dating. They’re… dating.
His thoughts rounded back, and he felt his hands readjust themselves on the steering wheel. Behind him, Gaz sighed quietly and cross her legs. He almost swore he could sense her and Zim exchange a glance through the rearview mirror, but he really had no way of knowing. He didn’t really want to know.
Dating.
“What’s the exit?” he asked, jarring them all back to reality.
Zim paused before answering. “It’s a couple down. Not this one, but the next.”
They returned to silence. Even as Dib’s blinkers resounded through the car and they exited off the highway. Even as the smooth highway turned to bumpy asphalt, then later, dirt roads.
At last, Zim spoke. “Dib—”
“I’m not mad,” he interrupted. “I’m just…I don’t know what I am. I need to process this. Just…” He trailed off, his mouth a thin line.
Zim and Gaz glanced at each other through the rearview again.
Eventually, they pulled into a dirt lot and spilled out of the little hatchback, glad for a break in the tension that had been all-consuming throughout the entire car ride. Gaz leaned back, popping her joints before heading to the trunk of the car where the camping supplies and camera equipment was. Zim took over, gathering it up and taking inventory of what they had brought along.
Just as before, everything was done without a word. No one really knew what to say. Gaz and Zim were giving Dib his space, and the latter still seemed to be at a loss. Driving hadn’t really cleared his head as he’d lamely claimed it would; it’d just made him more flustered.
Before long, they were off. The hike through the woods was only marginally less uncomfortable than the car ride had been, but the open air helped. Dib led the way, walking along the dimming trail as dusk settled in. The plan was to find a place to set up camp near the area where the Paulding Light supposedly made its appearance. Then, they’d hike again—this time under the cover of darkness—with the cameras rolling.
As the daylight slowly dissipated and the cool air settled in, Gaz paused to unhook her backpack from around her shoulders. Her jacket was inside, probably balled up beneath all the other crap she’d packed for this little excursion. Before she could even get her bag unzipped, though, Zim handed her his own sweatshirt.
She glanced up, and a wordless argument passed between them.
Now you’re going to be cold, her glare told him.
He gave her a challenging, almost haughty glance in return. Just put it on. I’m fine.
Gaz huffed a little and rolled her eyes, but ultimately acquiesced. She bunched it up and pulled it over her head. It was an overlarge navy hoodie with their college name and emblem branded on the front in bright, almost obnoxious yellow font. Zim had been wearing it almost religiously since October had arrived and the first freeze of the year had swept through their neighborhood.
When her face appeared at the neckline, she made brief accidental eye contact with Dib. He averted his eyes quickly. His mouth was still in that tight, thin line.
They continued on, walking until they’d found a suitable place to set up camp. Just as agonizingly silent as before, they set to tidying up the area, pulling out their sleeping bags, and taking inventory of the food they’d brought.
At this, Zim reached into one of the backpacks, eyes lighting up at a bag of jumbo marshmallows. Gaz slapped it away, all pretenses forgotten for a second. “Knock it off. We still have to film,” she said.
He snagged one anyway, popping it in his mouth defiantly before chuckling at her wavering attempt at a serious expression. They locked eyes for a moment, and then Gaz finally dropped it and began laughing along with him.
Dib cleared his throat.
They both turned and looked at him, smiles dropping instantly.
“Let’s get going,” he said, pushing his glasses up his nose and looking up at the smattering of stars up ahead. “You have the camera, Gaz?”
She nodded and held it up.
Dib did his best to not look behind him at Gaz and Zim as they walked on. Suddenly, any playful or even amicable interaction between them had taken on a whole new meaning. Because it wasn’tjust amicable.
Dating. They’re… dating.
It made him feel like the last few months had been a lie. It wasn’t just him, his sister, and his best friend anymore. It was him, his sister, and his sister’s boyfriend.
He visibly shuddered as he stepped over a fallen tree branch. Ugh, he didn’t want to think about that.
About a mile in, they began to hear running water. Sure enough, only about five minutes later they came upon a fallen tree that spanned about the width of the trail. Some quick observation showed that it was acting as a sort of bridge over a shallow stream about five or six feet below.
“I guess this is sturdy enough,” Dib muttered, testing the strength of the log. He peered over the edge at the water. At this point, night had fallen proper. A small slice of moon illuminated the sky, casting down on the stream. Dark water glinted here and there as it passed over rocks.
He began to walk over it, arms held out for balance. He hadn’t said much at all, despite Gaz currently filming. She held the camera up anyway, sighing inwardly.
What a waste this trip was. Who the hell would want to watch a video of Dib moodily wandering through the woods all night?
As for Zim, he had hardly uttered a word, either. And he was usually the comic relief of their little program. The fact that Zim was quiet wasn’t just bizarre; it was unsettling.
Zim stepped up on the log, followed by Gaz, who was still holding the camera out in front of herself. The disproportionate weight made her lose her balance for a moment, which was then exacerbated when the entire log rocked along with her. On instinct, Zim reached out and caught her by the wrist.
Dib turned, still halfway across their little bridge over the stream. He glanced at the two blankly. Then, his eyes narrowed. Even in the darkness, the intensity of his glare met Zim’s eyes.
“Would it kill you to not fondle my sister in the middle of the night while we’re trying to film?” Dib muttered.
“What are you talking about, Earth-stink?” It was clear Zim’s already-thin patience was running dry. These days, nearly a decade after arriving on earth, he only pulled out the immature nicknames when he on the verge of arguing.
Dib simply gesticulated at Zim’s hand, still grasping Gaz’s wrist. Zim looked at him incredulously and then let go of her.
“Dib…” Gaz growled, “You’re acting like an asshole.”
I’m acting like an asshole?!” he said, the hours of tension suddenly bubbling to the surface. “You’re the one who decided to… to…” He was at a loss for words.
Gaz darkened nonetheless, eyes glinting. “I didn’t ‘decide’ to do anything! And if I knew you were just going to sulk the whole time, I would have stayed the fuck home! Do I even have to remind you that I do this shit as a favor to you?” She waved the camera in front of her, and Dib paled at both her words and the prospect of it slipping from her grip and into the stream several feet below them. “Did it ever occur to you that maybe I didn’t even want to go camping right after my midterms?”
“A favor for me, sure!” Dib shot back. Maybe some people could be perfectly silent for hours on end and be perfectly calm. His temper had never allowed for that. He was speaking without thinking, and he could feel it. It still didn’t stop the word-vomit from coming. “You sure it’s a favor for me and not a favor for your little boyfriend over there?”
He gestured vaguely towards the “boyfriend” in question, who’s face was beginning to match Gaz’s. Before Zim could open his mouth, though, Gaz lunged forward, right into Dib’s face. “If you know what’s good for you, you’ll shut the fuck up right now!”
The fallen tree they were balanced on began to rock a little, and Zim’s eyes went wide as he clambered to keep his footing. “Gaz—”
“Stay out of it, Zim!”
“I will not!” he shot back. “Not when you’re both acting like complete—”
He didn’t finish the sentence. The log rocked again, and this time, Gaz’s balance didn’t withstand. The little hand-held camcorder slipped from her grasp, and she instinctively lurched towards it with her hands outstretched. Zim, operating on the same instinct, tried to catch her again. His foot slipped out from under him along with a crumbling of tree bark that had split off the log
“W-woah!” Dib shouted. His eyes bulged from behind his glasses. He reached for both of them, catching the sleeve of Gaz’s hoodie and Zim’s arm to try to keep them from falling over the side. He only succeeded in making the sorry excuse for a bridge rock yet again. At that point, it seemed, the log decided it was no longer interested in keeping three fully grown adults upright and out of the water. It rocked, crumbled, and then slipped from where it had been wedged between the two ends of the hiking trail.
Dib, Zim, and Gaz went tumbling off. High, clipped shouts preceding their fall, then a series of splashing.
The water below was cold, but not terribly so. It was a shallow, slow-moving stream. Almost more of an inconvenience than anything. Even so, the drop was high enough that Dib landed on the balls of his feet, skidded out, and skinned both elbows as he fell clumsily onto his rump.
He groaned, cupping one scraped elbow in his palm. Already beginning to internally bemoan his soaking-wet clothes, he turned to Gaz. His anger was beginning to return to him in place of shock.
“Great. That’s a new camera down the fucking drain.”
Instead of an onslaught of choice words back at him, however, Gaz didn’t respond. She wasn’t even looking in his direction. Instead, she was turned away, hunched over something in the darkness. It took him a moment to realize what she was doing. At her feet, Zim’s body was lying halfway in the stream, completely motionless.
Gaz whipped around to look at Dib, soggy tendrils of hair stuck to her cheeks. She no longer looked angry. “I think he hit his head. Help me get him out of here!”
Dib’s eyes widened, and without thinking, he hurried around Gaz’s other side, grabbing Zim’s shoulder and hauling him to the grassy bank a few feet away. “Is he okay?” he shouted.
“I don’t know. Move!” She dropped to her knees in front of him. His wig sat like a sodden mop on his head, and she pulled it off before it could burn his scalp any more than it had. The worry she so evidently felt was plastered all over her face. Even in the darkness, Dib could see it. He was worried, too, but it was strange to see it so plainly on Gaz of all people. She had always been the more level-headed of the two, and seeing her normally morose, carefully composed poker-face fall away so quickly made Dib feel like he’d entered some alternate dimension.
Seconds later, Zim came around. With a moan, his eyelids fluttered open to reveal one contact and one overbright pink eye.
Gaz didn’t fuss or wring her hands, but she sighed noticeably in relief, then began asking him questions. (What is your name? Where are you right now?)
Zim answered in turn, seemingly fine. His hand wrapped around to the back of his head to absently massage at a growing bump, though. He groaned again and sat up.
“You need to get out of those clothes,” Dib said. He could hear a distant sizzling—the awful sound of water against Zim’s skin. Even in their days of mortal rivalry, that sound had always had a visceral effect that could pierce through any bluster and leave Dib cringing inwardly.
Gaz nodded her head in agreement. “Come on,” she said. She rose to her feet, then helped Zim up.
“I’m fine. This isn’t the first time this has happened on this filthy planet,” he muttered. The fire that had been in his voice just moments before had been snuffed out. He tugged at his soggy clothing and scratched at the rashes that were beginning to form on his arms and torso.
Before Dib had time to realize what was happening, they were walking ahead of him back to their camp. Gaz was leading the way this time. Zim managed to keep up, wincing in pain occasionally.
When they got back, Gaz beelined to Zim’s bags. While he ducked behind some brush and changed into new clothes, she pulled out a small first aid kit with the Irken insignia printed on the outside.
“He’ll need the—” Dib started. He stopped when he saw Gaz pull out the exact tube of antibiotic cream he had been about to gesture towards. She glanced at the Irken characters—Irken characters Dib hadn’t known she could read—and opened it.
“Can you hand me the bandages from your bag?” she asked.
Dib shot her a weird look but reached for the bandages anyway. “You know, his PAK heals him pretty quickly. I don’t think he even really needs them.”
“Yeah, but bandaging it up makes him whine about it less,” she said. She tried to hide the smile that had begun to form on her lips.
Dib handed it over and began to build a fire for the three of them.
Zim returned then, dressed in clean, dry clothes. While Gaz helped treat and bandage the worst of the burns, Dib kept silent. This time, however, it wasn’t out of whatever conglomerate of frustration he’d been feeling earlier. He was watching his sister coyly.
Gaz was not the maternal type. Throughout their entire lives, Gaz’s words and actions had been laced in a gruff sort of outer layer that warned others she was not to be trifled with. She kept her circle small and very rarely expressed any emotion other than cool apathy or outright anger.
The way she was acting towards Zim was a far cry from her normal self. Dib had only ever seen her like this on a handful of other occasions. When those memories drifted to him and he realized the common denominator, he suddenly felt uneasy. The tenderness in which she wrapped Zim’s forearm was with the same silent, admonishing tenderness she’d shown Dib when he’d gotten injured during his own idiotic exploits over the years.
Meanwhile, Zim sat slumped against a tree, letting her bandage him up without a fuss. While he was making an attempt at nonchalance, it was clear he was practically falling asleep where was sitting.
That was another little thing Gaz seemed to either know already or manage to take in stride: something about injuries made Zim unusually tired afterwards. For as long as Dib had known him, he’d been this way. Dib had deducted it was because his PAK was using more energy than usual, and Zim had more or less confirmed it. Even so, it was rather unsettling to see anyone sustain an injury and then drop off to sleep moments later like a narcoleptic.
That’s precisely what Zim was doing now, now. As soon as Gaz finished with the last bandage, she shook his shoulder to wake him. With the last of his energy, he shuffled to his sleeping bag and practically faceplanted onto it. Within seconds, he had dropped off to sleep.
Gaz patted his hand.
Dating, Dib thought yet again.
It was absurd. That was the only way he could put it. It didn’t make any sense. Almost…almost as absurd as the idea of him being friends with Zim in the first place.
He frowned and began to pull at the loose strings of a bracelet he’d worn on his wrist for the last year or so. Zim had an almost identical one that he, too, never removed.
Hadn’t there been a time when he couldn’t imagine himself being anything but Zim’s enemy? And now they were almost inseparable. If he could get used to that, why couldn’t he get used to this?
He glanced down at the bracelet and sighed. “You really care about him, don’t you?” he said finally.
Gaz glanced up, her face guarded. “I wouldn’t be with him if I didn’t.”
“And he treats you well?”
“What kind of stupid question is that?” She made a face, but it wasn’t entirely hostile. “I wouldn’t be with him if he didn’t.”
Dib’s eyes fell on Zim, who was snoring lightly. He didn’t doubt that. “Okay,” he said through another exhale.
“‘Okay,’ what?” Gaz said, raising a brow. “I don’t need your ‘blessing,’ Dib. I just want—”
“—No, no, no. I don’t mean it that way,” Dib said quickly, “I mean ‘okay,’ I will get used to this. And I’ll stop being such an asshole.” He quirked his lip upward in a humorless smile at the last part. “I’m sorry, Gaz. I could have handled that a lot better, and I didn’t.”
She pulled her knees to her chest and stared into the crackling fire. “Apology accepted.”
Zim began to stir then, one hand reaching out to scratch at his bandages.
“Hey, don’t do that,” Gaz said softly, taking the hand and moving it away. She made to rifle through their bags but was stopped when Zim’s hand closed around hers. He held her in place and began to murmur incoherently.
Gaz smiled; a sweet, serene smile Dib very rarely saw. “Just give me a minute,” she told Zim. She squeezed his hand and pulled away, unzipping the bag closest to her and retrieving what she was looking for—the marshmallows Zim had been after earlier.
She pressed one into his palm, and his fingers wrapped around it groggily.
Over the next hour, he slowly came out of whatever fog his PAK had put him through as it worked to heal him. By morning, the irritated rashes from the water would be gone and the bump on his head would be nothing but a distant memory.
Not for the first time, Dib thought about how strange Irkens were.
Over the rest of the night, the three gathered around the fire, roasting marshmallows. Even through the lulls in conversation, the tension that had practically been a permanent fixture earlier was gone. Instead, they slipped into their new dynamic. A dynamic that was, as Dib had claimed, absurd. But when hadn’t it been? Not when Zim had first arrived on Earth. Not when years and events had passed them by, and enmity had melded to friendship. And not now.
Absurdity was their specialty, and they were learning to wear it proudly.

Invest in the Best
There are so many different plumbing, heating and cooling companies out there today. They all have different specialties and install different brands of products. Some do residential work while others do commercial. So how do you wade through the sea of companies available to you and choose the correct one? Let me tell you about Scott Wagner Plumbing and Heating.
Scott Wagner Plumbing and Heating was formed in 1995 in Ottawa, Ohio and operated out of Scott's garage. After establishing itself as a dominate force in the HVAC and plumbing industries, the business expanded to a newer and larger shop also in Ottawa. Soon it was time to expand again into Defiance, Ohio and with that, the opportunity to serve even more customers. We currently have 23 employees and 17 service vans on the road. You might wonder how we keep that many employees busy. Aside from serving the Ottawa and Defiance areas, we also serve Findlay, Paulding, and Napoleon among others. In fact, we serve a 10 county area. That's a lot of experience serving northwest Ohio. Besides formal training and on the job experience, all of our HVAC technicians are NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certified. They each take continuing education classes to ensure we have the most educated technicians available.
