Album Reviews: The Black Angels 'Death Song'
The band’s psychedelic foundation still remains intact, but this time, the band delves into wider landscape of sound.
Genre: Psychedelic rock Release Date: April 21, 2017 Number of Tracks: 11 Label: PTKF Rating:
Purchase: MP3 / CD / Vinyl
It’s no coincidence that Austin-based psych-rock outfit The Black Angels titled their fifth full-length album Death Song. The riddle was noticeably extracted from the Velvet Underground’s 1967 single “The Black Angel’s Death Song.” But unlike 2008’s Directions to See a Ghost, Death Song fails to rival anything the Velvet Underground has ever released. The band’s psychedelic foundation still remains intact, but this time, the band delves into wider landscape of sound.
Death Song ranges from atmospheric abyss to blues-driven blaze. The album opens with a gritty chime of Christian Bland’s guitar-work on “Currency,” a politically-charged song about currency manipulation. The band employs a large wall of sound with the use of reverb, spacious fuzz and broad organs. For The Black Angels, Death Song is an avenue for the band to tap into sonic dimensions previously unimagined.
In theory, The Black Angels base most of Death Song around 60’s psych. But this album is layered with buoyant pop overtones and shoegazy rhythms as heard on “I’d Kill For Her,” “Hunt Me Down” and “I Dreamt.” Regardless of the slew of elements enshrouding the mix, The Black Angels return to their stripped back psych architecture on “Grab as Much (as you can),” “Estimate” and “Death March.”
“Half Believing” is questionable and difficult song to come to terms with, especially if you’re a psych-rock stickler. The Black Angels slow the pace down a bit. Their embrace for ballad-esque songwriting is revealed through a dreamy atmosphere of wavy guitars, spacey synth tracks and melancholic vocals.
On Death Song, The Black Angels touch upon the turmoil we face individually and as a society. This album isn’t exactly the “life of the party,” but rather a reflection of chaos for those who care enough to relate. The songwriting on this album could put the band under the microscope, while many fans question their psychedelic  authenticity.
