The northern lights are coming to several states this week. Here's how to watch : NPR
...  The aurora borealis could be seen across parts of Washington, Idaho, Vermont, Wyoming, New Hampshire, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Maryland, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, [and] Maine, according to the university.
On Wednesday, the storm will be highly visible "low on the horizon from Seattle, Des Moines [Iowa], Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and Halifax [Nova Scotia]."
On Thursday, the storm will get stronger and can be seen overhead in Minneapolis, Milwaukee; Bay City, Mich., and on the horizon in Salem, Mass.; Boise, Idaho; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Lincoln, Neb.; Indianapolis, and Annapolis, MD.  ...
...  The Space Weather Prediction Center says the best time to view the aurora is usually between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time.
You don't need any special equipment to see auroras.
Pick a spot where there is little light pollution.
Get to a higher elevation if possible.
Check the forecast for signs of clouds or precipitation, which could block your view.
Scan the skies...they can appear from all directions.

Do the recent or right-now-ongoing crazy global weather scare you? Bother you? Interest you?
I'm pulling this from various media sources, because there is so much crazy weather happening now, or that has happened within the last couple of weeks, it seems like no single media source is picking it up.
From Heatmap AM:
Houston’s floods – More than 400 people in and around Houston, Texas, evacuated their homes over the weekend due to flooding. At least one person, a child, was killed. In one nearby county, more than 21 inches of rain fell over five days last week. The rain has tapered off but the cleanup has just begun.
Brazil’s rain – In Brazil’s southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, days of intense rain caused the Guaiba River to overflow and flood more than 340 cities, including the region’s capital of Porto Alegre. At least 78 people are dead and more than 115,000 have been forced to evacuate. One climatologist calledthe catastrophe “a disastrous cocktail” of climate change and the El Niño effect. “It looks like a scene out of a war,” said Rio Grande do Sul governor Eduardo Leite.
Chile’s fires – Fires in Chile’s Valparaiso region, fueled by an intense heat wave and enduring drought, have killed at least 51 people and burned more than 64,000 acres.
Kenya’s deluge – Flooding and landslides in Kenya from unrelenting rainfall have killed more than 200 people. It is still raining and the weather is forecast to worsen throughout the month of May.
Southeast Asia’s heat wave – A lengthy heat wave has shattered temperature records across Southeast Asia, forcing many schools to close. One weather historian called the heat wave “the most extreme event in world climatic history.”
From the Associated Press (AP):
A weekend spring storm that drenched the San Francisco Bay area and closed Northern California mountain highways also set a single-day snowfall record for the season on Sunday (May 5) in the Sierra Nevada. The wet weather system had mostly moved out of the state by Sunday morning, but officials warned that roads would remain slick after around two feet (60 centimeters) of snow fell in some areas of the Sierra. “Did anyone have the snowiest day of the 2023/2024 season being in May on their winter bingo card?” the University of California, Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab asked on the social platform X. The 26.4 inches (67 centimeters) of snowfall on Sunday beat the second snowiest day of the season — March 3rd — by 2.6 inches (6.6 centimeters), according to the lab.
From Yale Climate Connections:
For the first time since the 2010s, a high-risk outlook for severe weather (level 5 of 5) has been issued for parts of the Great Plains. The outlook was put in place at 8 a.m. EDT Monday, May 6, and updated at 12:30 p.m. EDT Monday by the NOAA/National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, as a busy few days of severe weather moved into high gear. Dozens of tornadoes could erupt by midweek, including in and near Oklahoma on Monday and across a broad swath of the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio River valleys on Wednesday. Many of the worst tornado U.S. outbreaks of recent years have played out across the Mississippi Valley and Southeast, but multiple rounds of twisters have hammered the Plains since late April, taking at least seven lives and wreaking what will no doubt be hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
From Wikipedia:
On 16 April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in the United Arab Emirates, affected cities of mainly Dubai and Sharjah, the northern Emirates, and different areas of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah. According to the National Center for Meteorology (United Arab Emirates) , this was the country's heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years. The floods in the Emirates were a part of the greater Persian Gulf floods.

Are snakes (or reptiles in general) ever bred in captivity for wild release for endangered species?
I know some zoos do this for mammals so now I'm wondering if it applies to reptiles too, I imagine it'd be easier to release them into the wild too, since they don't need to be taught to hunt or socialize like mammals tend to, but I don't know if this is a thing that happens
Great question! That's absolutely a thing, and you're right that reptiles are generally easier to release into the wild than mammals are. Right now, a lot of captive breeding efforts with endangered reptiles are still in the "increase captive population" stage, but wild release does happen, especially for species that have breeding programs that have been going on long enough for the captive population to be stable and genetically diverse.
The organization I'm most familiar with that does a lot of endangered breeding programs is the Phoenix Herpetological Sanctuary - I went to grad school in Arizona, and actually got to volunteer with them while I was in school. When I was there, they only bred endangered species native to Arizona for release (like twin-spotted and ridgenose rattlers), but they've since expanded to endangered non-native vipers like Milos vipers and even non-snake reptiles, like Chinese alligators. This is increasingly happening at other zoos and research institutions, too - right now, Ohio Northern University is running a great program to breed and release plains garters.
Breed-and-release programs for reptiles aren't as common as those for mammals, but they definitely happen, and are becoming more common!

Menu Monday: As you can probably tell from its style, this is a much more recent menu than what we usually share with you. This is the menu from the Princeton Association of Northern Ohio’s April 16, 2007 dinner, held at  Fire Food and Drink in Cleveland, Ohio. (Fire Food and Drink closed permanently in August 2020 due to the strains associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.)

Ohio Northern University, a private United Methodist-affiliated school, instructs about 3,000 students with a staff of approximately 650.
Dr. Scott Gerber, who taught at the school’s College of Law, was pulled out of class and escorted off campus in April 2023 by campus police officers. That suspension was immediately followed by his termination, and now there are allegations and counter-allegations over the reason for his termination. ..

TYRONE GETER b 1945, USA)
In a career that spreads across two continents, Tyrone Geter has built an international reputation as a world-class artist, painter, sculptor, illustrator and teacher. Presently an Associate Professor of Art at Benedict College in Columbia, SC, Geter grew up in Anniston, Alabama, a site of numerous acts of racial violence during the Civil Rights Era which informs and shapes his work.
Geter received his Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1978. An exceptional draftsman, his portraits are sensitive, timeless and masterfully executed. Their power, displayed through their expression, gesture and adornments, seem often suspended in an other-worldly environment. Equal to the history his figures embody, they also speak of a spiritual world overflowing with compassions and empathy. In this regard his work is uniquely distinctive.
In 1979, Tyrone Geter relocated to Zaria, Nigeria, a move that proved to be a turning point in his development and growth as an artist. For seven years he lived, drew and painted among the Fulani and local peoples of Northern Nigeria.
He returned to the United States in 1987 with a teaching position at the University of Akron. He is the recent recipient of the Yaddo Residency in Saratoga Springs, NY.
