KOQ HCs: Gareth Barrett #2
Gareth and Friends:
Like I said, because of the low image he had of himself and his struggles at socializing, Gareth spent a huge chunk of his life lonely. But at least things didn't had to be so grim for him.
For example, as a child he soon befriended Clover Fortune, daughter of the family the Barretts served. She was slightly older than him, just by 2-3 years, but that didn't stop on them being very attached to each other. Having a superior similar on age meant an easy way of learning butler skills; but even if Gareth tried very hard to serve Clover she didn't like seeing their relationship as master-servant. In fact, despite not being related by blood nor documents, she considers him deeply as a younger brother.
Aside from the main mansion, Gareth would also have some opportunities to meet new faces; such as in one of the many parties done by the Fortune's and their contacts. Being given the very simple task of serving little pastries to the invitees, that night he stumbled upon a girl who would become his best friend, Sienna Hayley. Being of similar circumstances, the two bonded quickly as both desired to make friends. Since she was a fan of baking, the two soon developed the silly passtime of having tea parties together, even at local school of Oldfolk. The procedure was simple, Gareth would serve the food Sienna would make, giving his friend time to eat by herself. However in many occasions she also offered him to join in too, not wanting to see him just standing there "like a pillar". A bit unusual for a butler, but it at least made his friend happy. Plus, Sienna's muffins are the best!
However, not everyone seemed on par with this idea, as one day both friends were sorrounded by some other Oldfolk students who had no good intentions at all. While Gareth was ready to try and defend Sienna, soon the rascals were scared away by a mysterious jockey that appeared out of nowhere. His name was Dale, and while he didn't care much about the two nor their parties at first, he couldn't stand seeing injustice nearby. With the surprising offer from Sienna to join them in, soon Gareth made yet another friend.
But like shown before, Oldfolk school did not always bring him friends. Although Gareth wasn't a person to make enemies, his cold exterior would give others the wrong first impression. And plus, the closest thing to a rivarly he would had was with the child of the Rotten, Lance. Though it was mostly because the helmet boy often tended to act quite snarky to others, boasting about his ties to royalty, but also specially towards Gareth due to their shared knight naming motif. IN FACT, knowing the tragic fate of the knight Gareth at the hands of Lancelot, this often gave him a sense of superiority, constantly joking about it to the keeper. However, for better or worse, Lance is one of the few people Gareth's not afraid of standing up to.
Despite everything at least, their rivarly never went too far. Specially with both boys knowing a stuff like a fight could damage intensely both the reputation of the Rotten, the Fortunes, and the Barrett all at the same time. Besides, they found a better way to express their rivarly without much harm: Soccer. I'll talk about Gareth's entrance to this sport separately, but let's say that both players are always striving to be better than the other, and often tend to have 1v1s.
However, there's a strange factor that also tones down their shared tensions, and that is... Clover herself. Whenever she's nearby or when she spectates any of OF's soccer matches, Lance's bickering atitude towards Gareth is reduced exponentially. The butler assumes is because she's older and thus more intimidating, but there's times where he notices Lance often staring at her way too much. Just in case, he's keeping an eye on him.

KOQ HCs: Gareth END(?)
...My original idea was to post this after some other things, but... Did you know it has been an ENTIRE MONTH since the previous part? Yeah. I didn't want to postpone the wait even longer.
So, here it is, the culmination... This post will be long and with a huge extra section, so be prepared.
Spoiler: Sorry, no Lance here. Post FFI, dude went to university to study Archeology.
So... Liocott went well, for the most part. KOQ won a match but lost the rest, ending last on their group. It did affect the team quite a lot, but there wasn't anything to do about it. Despite the failure it was to say that many had gotten many new experiences and knowledge thanks to the run their teams had, and Gareth was no exception. In an enviroment without any mansion, rich people, nor father, he managed to have time and reflect on the person he was and what he wanted to be. Unfortunately, while returning to England, he soon realized that things at home wouldn't be the same anymore.
First off, things were clear for him now: He didn't want to be a butler anymore. Even before the tournament, soccer had opened many doors on his life, had made him try and learn new skills, helped him open up to others, and to forge new and meaningful relationships. Things like professional leagues and constantly swtiching clubs/contracts seemed like an uncertain future, but there was something within Gareth that wanted to explore it no matter the cost. But the issue was, how would he communicate that with his father?
And to add some more salt, another self-discovery with himself was regarding his own sexuality. Until now, Gareth had disclossed any talk about the topic, simply because it was barely talked at home or shunned by his family. But getting to meet more people his age and the changes they were undergoing made him realize his own. And for better or worse, the main keeper of his own team had been the main object around his realizations.
Around his stay at Liocott, and maybe after the InaJapan match, Gareth's feelings for Freddy started to change. What had started as a slight tension and then turned into a great friendship, was soon getting intertwined with other types of feelings, specially with the complicated period of puberty. When Gareth was around the taller keeper, he felt such happiness that it made his heart go wild. Plus, either if they were ever talking, training, or even playing, the reserve couldn't help but stare at Freddy in awe.
Of course, having never experienced those feelings before, Gareth wasn't sure how to deal with them. He had remembered feeling something similar to Clover when he was VERY young, but even then it just didn't feel like what he was feeling now. And actually talking about it with someone else was even worse, given he wasn't sure with who, or if they'd even understand him on the first place. I think the best person for that could be Gary, but him being a close friend of Freddy did complicate things a bit. Overall, the new conclusions he had gotten about his sexuality would also be difficult to talk them out with an actual adult. But either way when retuning home, he decided to be honest with his parents.
...Unforunately, just like he had feared, Gawain didn't took any of that well at all.
...To his reflief, he was still allowed to play soccer and at Oldfolk, sure, but with the condition of him being enrolled at a butler school during his late adolesence. Balancing between these (forced) studies and training became often unbearable many times, so the chance of him playing professionally early started to fade away with time. And so years went and went, with Gareth entering into adulthood frustrated, stressed, and pretty much in his worst. He still kept his friends around, but their entrance to their respective dream jobs had distanced them a bit. And as for romantic relationships, it got even worse. After pretty much being slammed down by his father for liking boys, Gareth started to repress his own feelings, even to the point he tried to force himself into a opposite-gender relationship. Needless to say things didn't work out and it ended up hurting both sides. So even in love things got sour.
But one day, everything around him straight up crumbled down, with the sudden notice of Gawain himself contracting a worsening illness. Liz and her son tried all they could to take care of him, even with the accumulated resentment between father and son, but... It had all became futile, with the man dying without being even able to reach old age.
Without a word, this was a turning point in Gareth's life. He was now technically "free" from the pressure of the Barrett and all, but even then the whole thing had left him pretty much empty. He still refused to become a butler, but now he had even lost the desire to keep playing soccer. It just... Felt wrong. So, now not knowing what to do, he wandered by himself a long time.
...But the same way things changed unexpectedly for the worst, they also changed for the best. After a re-encounter with his (now longtime) bff Sienna, she decided to offer Gareth a job at her new workplace, a pub his older brother co-owned. Mostly to be a waiter, but he could choose any other role he wanted. With nowhere else to go minus the Fortune mansion, he decided to accept it.
Now, around the GO saga, he lives a normal life. Every so often he stumbles upon his former KOQ teammates names appearing in various multimedia, be it their successes or failures, and he remembers them fondly. With the place also having a TV, every so often he would switch channels just to see some soccer or polo leagues. The thought of him pursuing sports returns and all, but he is unsure to return to that world. At least the place is quite good and his co-workers treat him well. He does stumble with some clients pointing out his past as a former GK, but he just listens to those comments with frustration. For now, life just goes on. Or so it seems.
-------------------
Okay, plot twist time:
What you have been reading in all this series, was a set-up for what was my first FFI fic (idea).
To give some context, last year when I stumbled upon Gareth + Freddy and their butler/spy connection I got WILD, inmediately getting an idea for some sort of spy flick story with the two; though with -obviously- their adult selves. I named it "Black//White".
The plot would go where we left it: With Gareth having a bittersweet job life at the Hayley's new pub. However after an unexpected fight between spies and goons starting there (With the poor waiter being on the middle of it), he soon finds out that not only this place has ties with the british MI6, but ALSO that the specific group affiliated with it is the one Freddy McQueen works at (Though things within him aren't all happy either).
And yeah, out of curiosity Gareth decides to get involved more onto the spy world -to the dislike of his friend and her brother- alongside Freddy, though the feelings that both had developed during Liocott come back to haunt them again, leaving them confused over what to do. Worry not, it ends up working out this time around :D
Alsoooo Lance appears as a side character, reviving some tension with Gareth (...Not in a love triangle) and with a side arc of his own, plus a re-encounter with Clover.
...I'll confess that's all I have, really. To tell you the truth while I do have a premise, I don't have an actual plot; and I couldn't work on one enough before my focus switched over to Big Waves. I think a James Bond-level supervilliain sounds super fun for a world like Ina11 (Maybe their plan has to do with hijacking a tournament?), but I can't really think much about it atm. One thing is sure, and a concept that I like is Gareth infiltrating himself on their residence as an inoffensive butler. I'll leave what happens up to you (?
Either way, even if my brain just cannot focus on it properly anymore, this story still makes me very happy to this day. Thank you for reading, as always 😎
Though, while this is the end of Gareth's POV, I also have some things with Freddy lying around... Kinda. Maybe I'll share it too.
