LOST IN THOUGHT – Emster Fanfic
Setting: The city
Mood: Fluff
Prop: An umbrella
Based on a prompt given so long ago that I finally moved past my writer's block and managed to get a good story down.
°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°
She had been walking through Ebott city, the chill reminding her of Snowdin. She breathed the autumn air, taking in the scenery as both Sans and Papyrus ran up ahead, chatting happily about the odd world around them. What an odd world indeed, she thought as she held his hand. It was none other than Gaster, the esteemed royal scientist from the Underground, holding hands with a human. Funny, how it seems not that long ago that he'd been the same skeleton to blame the war and resulting monster deaths on humans, only to turn around and fall in love with one much later. Even funnier, how he felt no pressure to keep an eye on Emmi as she walked with him and the boys. If the war was the reason for the death of his parents, which he felt in part responsible for stopping, then shouldn't he feel more cautious around Emmi? More ready to protect Sans and Papyrus so he didn't lose his family again?
No, no. He felt no such pressure.. Emmi was part of that family now. She became what he would die to protect, along with Sans and Papyrus. At this point, he simply became far too comfortable with Emmi and the skeleton brothers that losing any of them would be devastating, even if Gaster knew what Emmi really was under that 'monster' facáde. That's why he trusted her as she lead him somewhere to get out of the rain as soon as it started to get heavier than a few drops every minute, and why he didn't bat an eye when Emmi checked in on the boys as he went into his dimensional inventory box to pull out an umbrella. That's why he wasn't suspicious when Emmi asked to join him and told the boys to be good while they wait for their return as they played in the shade of a storefront with crosswords and word jumbles. That's why he allowed himself to drift off into his own world, appreciating every drop of rain as though it would be the last.
How he missed the simple comfort of rain; however now, he had someone to enjoy it with. It wasn't anything particularly thrilling or exciting, but a peaceful feeling of enlightenment never ceased to wash over him. Emmi chatted idly with him, not so much of asking questions as she was providing company in her own way. Yes, it was different compared to the feeling of being alone in the rain, but not in a bad way. He would even dare say that, perhaps, with how his life was going right now, that perhaps he preferred this more. Never did he ever think something like this would happen, but he wasn't much for past assumptions these days. They walked side by side, with Emmi holding her umbrella with the hand furtherest from Gaster and Gaster holding his umbrella with two hands.
As Emmi spoke about something pertaining to cinnamon tea having more than just cinnamon, Gaster took the time to let one hand go from his umbrella and hold Emmi's free hand. She had been a bit appalled by the active yet carefree attempt to give any sort of random affection, almost expecting some sort of justification to it. There wasn't any. She continued to speak after recovering from the initial shock, as though maybe he didn't realize that he had took her by the hand. His blush was probably just a result of a chill from the current breeze outside, right??... wait, skeletons don't have skin. Then... then maybe it was because he figured out he was holding her hand?
She peaked a glance at him to find him already looking at her. He stops walking, and Emmi is already concerned. Maybe he did have a problem with her being here after all? That when he knelt. Of course, he sort of had to get on a knee to put a hand to her cheek and kiss her lips. Their height difference didn't allow him to do it standing straight up, but neither seemed to mind at that given moment. His umbrella bumping against hers in a way that got rain on him as it really started to pour down now. Not that he cared anyway, taking this time to be particularly affectionate with Emmi unlike most other times. She soaked upon the affection like a sponge, welcoming every peacefully happy look he gave her as he brushed her hair back with a phalange. Yes, he never thought he'd love a human as much as he loved her, but that went for a lot of things.
He never thought he'd see Toriel again, or that the barrier would break without his or Asgore's intervention, or that he'd punch holes into his hands, or that he'd become a father, or that he'd become a father of the holes he punched into his hands; that was putting it simply. Emmi really did always change things for the better, didn't she? He nuzzled against the human. He once refused to share personal matters with her, and now he sheltered blossoming feelings for that same human. His human. He looked into her eyes with a light blush, a brief flicker of green being seen for all but a moment.
"Thank you for being here, Emmi."

Apocalypse Emster (by @cats-in-boots)
(Mentions of suicide. Some angst, attempted fluff. Fluffy Emster is hard to write. DX)

Prompt: Write a post-apocalyptic romance.

Emmi carrying her backpack, full of supplies from the last store she searched. She managed to find enough supplies to fill her backpack to the brim, but she still needed a place to sleep for the night. As it turns out, you can’t sleep in the same place for a long time without risking raiders finding you. Even without raiders though, she was on a mission. Prior to the apocalypse, Emmi had to be separated from Gaster and the boys while on a business trip with political figures. Being a known pro-monster activist lead to a busy life, but Emmi wouldn’t have it any other way.
While on the trip, she had gotten held up in traffic. There was a panic, but she couldn’t understand what the fuss was about. Why were people running and screaming? That’s when she saw it from across the street; a woman chased a man and sunk her teeth into his neck before ripping out his flesh. Emmi watched the world of humans around her fall into chaos as people lost it. The zombie apocalypse was here, and without time to prepare. She needed to leave. She made a U-Turn in the street and drove off. She sweated nervously as her heart sunk in a realization.
She forgot her phone at home.
Home was a long way from here. Sure, her car had a built-in GPS, but if things were as bad, could it be possible that Gaster is in trouble, too? What if Gaster went to go find her? How was she ever going to find him if they were both trying to find each other at the same time? The sweat on her neck had gone cold. There was no way she could make it back home with the amount of fuel she had. The day may be have been young, but she couldn’t stay in one place for too long if the virus spread as quickly as she thought it did.
Emmi took a moment to stop walking and set down her backpack. Her shoulders were tired, and she needed to rest anyways. She sighed. Her mission was to find Gaster and the boys. Every day she spends away from them, the lower the likelihood of her finding them and the lower the likelihood of them being alive. It’s not like they could get infected, but they can still be dusted by an aggressive infected human who stumbles upon them. Emmi hears a gunshot. Day One of the infection was rough, with plenty of reasonable people taking reasonable shots, but after a month of infection? People really start to lose what makes them sane and civil; especially when everything is on the line.
Emmi hides in the shadows, wanting to investigate what the sound was but not wanting to risk being found first. She has an awful lot of stuff and it’d be a shame to lose it all to a raider. Emmi carefully creeps down the street, seeing infected wander the street more openly to investigate the sound with her. Maybe this was a bad idea. Emmi makes a turn on a motel building wall and sees someone run into a room. She noticed a flash of ivory white on the figure. “Wait…!” Emmi exclaims. Is she deceived?
Emmi runs to the parking lot, tripping over something before she gets there. A freshly shot corpse is there. Judging solely by appearance, this is probably a raider. They look bitten on the neck, but that doesn’t seem to look like how they died. Emmi sees a handgun in their hand. They must have shot themselves, then. But why?! Emmi sees undead looking at her, running towards the poor girl. She screams in surprise when she’s nearly grabbed by an infected, dodging and throwing her backpack over the motel wall and flying up.
While in the air, she sees the backpack was caught by a flight of stairs going up the motel. She flies over to the motel stairs and takes the backpack, running up the stairs with the backpack as she tries to make it where she saw the figure. She makes it to the fourth floor, undead chasing her as she runs by the doors on the fourth floor. She makes it to the figures door and knocks aggressively. “Help! Please, open up!” Emmi practically screamed as she saw zombies running towards her location. It was he either open the door or she has to ditch her backpack to fly to safety. Her wings weren’t strong enough to carry her while she flew. The door unlocks and opens enough for Emmi to be pulled in by skeletal hands.
The door is closed and locked as infected people slam against the door. Emmi looks up to see Gaster, but she sees Papyrus instead. Sans looks at Emmi with surprise and Gaster is quick to desummon his attacks as he gives Emmi a good look.
“Emmi? What are you doing here?!” Gaster asks as Sans joins Emmi and Papyrus in a family reunion hug.
“I-I thought I saw you! And I did! You’re here!” Emmi breaks the hug with Sans and Papyrus to hug Gaster, but he refuses and holds her back with blue magic.
“You thought? Were you not paying attention to how many there were out there?! That was a huge risk for thinking you saw me!” Gaster scolds.
“It was a risk to just let you leave! Do you have any idea how long I’ve been looking for you?” Emmi asked, a little heartbroken at the scolding.
“You could have waited until the area was clear! You’re lucky Papyrus didn’t listen to me or Sans, or you could’ve—” Gaster tears up, hand shaking as he releases her from his blue magic.
“Gaster…”
“You could’ve gotten bit. What would I have done then? Endlessly look for you without knowing that it was MY fault you got infected? Emmi, you really need to—You’re so— honestly, why do I even—”
“Shh, shh. Relax. I’m okay. I’m not infected, Papyrus let me in, and I’m here.” Emmi hugs the sad skeleton, offering her presence as forgiveness for her irrationality.
 Sure, it was a fault in her logic to assume that white meant Gaster, but at least she was here now, right?
“Reckless woman.”
“Your reckless woman.” Emmi gave him a kiss on the cheekbone while in the hug. Gaster nuzzles her neck, magic tears having dried but the worry still hanging.
“so, are we going to get to hug mama too, or…?”
“SANS! THEY’RE HAVING A MOMENT!”
“but shouldn’t we also get to hug them? he’s not the only one who missed her.”
“WELL… THAT’S TRUE, BUT ONLY IF THEY’RE OKAY WITH IT! AHEM!”
Papyrus confidently strides towards the couple. “MOTHER! CAN ME AND SANS HUG YOU, TOO?” Papyrus taps on your shoulder, getting a glare from Gaster as he proceeds to hug tighter.
“Of course. I miss you all.” Emmi gives a smile from over Gaster’s shoulder.
As Papyrus is about to hug Emmi, Gaster gives him a light push back with blue magic. “No, she’s mine.”
“Gaster!”
“They can wait five more hours.”
“Be reasonable.”
“That is reasonable.”
Emmi huffs. Stupid, cuddly skeleton.
“Love you, Gaster.”
“I love you too.”
~~~
OK FIRST OF ALL IM SO SORRY I NEVER POSTED THIS I FEEL SO BAD.......
second of all I LOVE THIS?? This is a SUPER cool concept, and I absolutely love that Gaster didn't want to let her go at the end there XD Let her hug her sons!!!!
I also love that you took advantage of her having wings within the narrative, but still gave them limits! That was a really neat touch.
Absolutely wonderful work!
An OBMP Holiday Fanfic Special
Me: I should do a thing, get back in the writing spirit and all that.
Time of Year: *Is a holiday*
Me: I think I know what I’m going to do today.
So, yep! It’s a OBMP fanfic holiday special! WHOOOP! This thing actually went through a few different versions before I finally settled on one. There were some weird versions, which reminds me: what would happen if you tried to bake cookies without proper ingredients? One of the versions involved trying to make chocolate chip cookies with powdered milk, egg protein, and no baking soda. I have no idea what would happen if you actually tried that. I can only assume the worst. Also, there was a salt rock. And an elaborate traipsing through the halls and down the stairs. Not the best setup.
Anyway, this one should be much better! Please enjoy!
Messy Gyftmas!
Emmibee’s cozy cocoon of warmth and hazy sleep was viciously torn open by a muffled buzzing sound. She quickly scrambled to shut off the old alarm clock she had buried in clothes and towels on her side table. She flopped back onto the bed. Just a few more seconds… a few more seconds…
…Kind of weird that Dr. Gaster hadn’t come into her bedroom to see what the alarm was about.
…Dr. Gaster?
Emmi snapped upright. That’s right; Dr. Gaster was taking his once-a-week night off and actually sleeping! (It was very, very slow progress in getting him to sleep more properly, but progress all the same.) She quickly threw off the covers and slipped on the fuzzy pink socks she had managed to find at the Snowdin Shop recently. She tiptoed out of her bed room and past Gaster’s room.
She was halfway down the stairs when she heard a gravelly snore that made her freeze. She turned towards the couch and spotted the skeleton doctor sprawled across the couch, glasses askew and a bunch of papers over his torso and lap. It seemed that he had fallen asleep while working instead of sleeping in his room like they agreed.
She shook her head. That stubborn old man…
Well, he was actually asleep, so that was good enough for today.
Emmi stepped into the kitchen and reached into the fridge. She had been meaning to ask why exactly Dr. Gaster kept so many bags of Popato Chisps in the fridge, of all places, but they hid Emmi’s personal purchases more than adequately, so it didn’t matter right now.
She retrieved the frozen waffles, bagels, and the two different kinds of spreads, and set them on the countertop. Two waffles were popped into the toaster, a few bagels were cut in half put in the oven to warm, and the two spreads— plain and strawberry flavored cream cheese— were opened and set out to soften a bit.
Emmi grinned and clapped her hands together quietly. A nice, warm, sort of-nutritious breakfast would hopefully give the doctor a reason to have more regular sleep schedule.
She pulled a large plate out of the cupboard and began to tastefully arrange the food (ha, puns). It was a shame she couldn’t find any maple syrup to put on the waffles, but maybe Gaster would appreciate being able to hold them in his hands and bite them like cookies. Once the plate was arranged to her taste (somebody stop her; she’s having a pun-derful morning!), she picked it up and began to carry it over to the coffee table by the couch.
At least, that’s what she intended to do, before a crunchy *thump* sounded from outside the house, followed by a strange, almost annoyed-sounding lowing. Emmi set the plate down and peeked out the window.
The snow wasn’t glittering with the warm, orange lights of the buildings in town, which meant that by all standards, it was still nighttime. Still, Emmi’s eyes quickly adjusted to see a strange, four-legged creature stumbling around in front of the house. Perhaps a fellow monster needed help?
She stuffed her snow boots on over her socks and grabbed her heavy coat. She opened the door to the house and stepped into the cold.
It was snowing, as it did every night in Snowdin. Emmi realized that the monster wasn’t stumbling; rather, it seemed to be bucking like a horse, a donkey, or a deer. The crunchy *thump* from earlier was likely caused by them tripping and smacking into a snowbank outside the house. They lowed again, more loudly, and shook their antlers. The movements were accompanied by tinkling bells, rustling paper, and other sounds.
A Gyftrot, Emmi realized with a quiet gasp. She had not yet met this particular monster, but the distressed noises it made were probably because of the decorations adorning it.“Hello?” Emmi called. Gyftrot snapped their attention to her, and she flinched.
Even when playing Undertale in her old life, Gyftrot was a funny looking creature. In person, though, they were almost terrifying. Their big, gaping eyes seemed both sunken and laser focused, and their sideways mouth steamed in angry sounding puffs and clicking teeth. They towered over her, their antlers almost doubling their height. They growled and backed away, dragging their hooves in the snow.
“W-wait!” She called. “I promise I’m not a child! I’m a perfectly grown-up adult!”
Gyftrot paused, then tilted their head in a way that seemed to say, “Oh, are you, now?”
“I am!” Emmi insisted. “Look, I’m not wearing a striped shirt.” She opened her coat enough to show off her pastel-colored nightgown, then closed it quickly. She was not built for cold weather.
Gyftrot rolled their eyes and huffed out another cloud of steam. “Okay, fine,” they seemed to be saying. “Now what?”
“You look like you could use some help. Would it be okay if I undecorated you? I’ll be careful, I promise.”
Gyftrot squinted at her for a good few seconds before folding their legs and resting in the snow, their antlers more at Emmi’s level.
“Thank you,” Emmi bowed politely and approached them. The tinkling bell sounds came from some thin plastic balls smacking together, looped over the prongs of Gyftrot’s antlers. The rustling paper was, in actuality, several strands of threadbare garland strands, wrapped around their neck and, again, their antlers. Following these were some of the strangest items Emmi could imagine: multiple stockings, tiny walking canes, boxes of raisins, a few car fresheners, and for some reason, a small, very confused dog. Emmi could have sworn the dog gave her a knowing wink before bounding into the forrest.
She looked over her handiwork and nodded. “Everything looks good.”
Gyftrot rose back to their hooves, and Emmi gave them some space. “Thank you, Miss,” they said in a deep voice. “I was asleep on the edge of the forest for the night, and when I awoke, I was covered in all manner of trinkets and nonsense. No doubt the work of some young punks. Oh, and pardon me for thinking you one of those children. You have a youthful demeanor about you, and you are very short.”
“Hey!” Emmi laughed with mock indignation. Gyftrot snorted a few times, a mischievous gleam in their eyes. Then their gaze dropped, and they went quiet. “Something wrong?” Emmi asked.
“It’s a bit silly, but… after all of that, I’m a bit hungry.”
Emmi thought for a second. “Well, I was making some breakfast for a friend when I heard you out here… Would you like me to bring you some?”
Gyftrot’s ears flattened a bit. “Well, I’d hate to take the meal you made for your friend…”
“No worries! I can make more. Wait right here; I’ll bring you a plate.” Before they could protest, Emmi sped-walked into the house, grabbed the plate of food, and brought it outside. “Here we are! Waffles and bagels. Do you like cream cheese—?”
As soon as Gyftrot spotted the plate, their eyes grew as big as saucers and they stuck their snout into the food. They were an enthusiastic and sloppy eater, but Emmi was too distracted by watching the way their jaws worked to notice the bits of cream cheese and crumbs spilling onto the front of her coat.
They grinned at her when they finished; a grin that, without context, would have seemed almost sinister. Emmi knew it was a smile of satisfaction. “Thank you again, Miss. Perhaps we’ll meet again, at a better time of the day. Good night.” Gyftrot trotted out of sight.
Emmi watched them go. Her socks were starting to become soaked through her boots, but the warmth in her SOUL distracted her from the cold.
The snow began to glitter orange in certain spots around her. “Emmibee?” She looked up to see a tired Gaster standing in the still open doorway of the house. Oops. “Why is the door open at this hour? You hate being cold.”
He stepped into the snow, not bothered by the weather, and stood over Emmi, looking her up and down with an analytical curiosity. She turned to face him, grinning just a little deliriously. Maybe she should have gone to bed earlier instead of reading all night…
“…What are you wearing?” Dr. Gaster asked.
She looked down at herself, seeing the crumbs and cream cheese smears from Gyftrot’s early breakfast, as well as a few of the decorations she had removed from Gyftrot’s person. Somehow, the garland had wrapped around her shoulders, a tiny walking cane hung around each of her ears like strange headphones, and a few stockings hung from the buttons on her coat. She blinked for a moment. Then, she smiled up at her housemate. “I’m the messiest Gyftmas tree. Hohoho, heeheehee.”
Gaster squinted at her, his bone brow furrowed as he tried to comprehend what she just said. “…You’re a very strange woman,” he finally stated.
“Actually, if you recall, I said I’m—”
“Yes, I heard you the first time. You are the messiest Gyftmas tree.”
“You have to say ‘hohoho, heeheehee’ after that part.”
“No.”
“Phooey.”
“Will you explain why you’re outside at this hour now?”
“After we go inside. I’ll make more breakfast.”
In the time it took Emmibee to remake Gaster’s breakfast plate and tell her story, she was barely standing on her feet. Before she could fall over, Gaster guided her to his spot on the couch, removed her coat, boots, and decorations, and tossed his lab coat over her sleeping form, since it was the closest thing to a blanket within arm’s reach.
He found himself glancing at her repeatedly and he ate the breakfast she made. Her curly brown hair was frizzy and tangled from the snowy winds, and her round little face was pink from the warmth of the house. It filled him with… nondescript contentment. It definitely didn’t make him feel nice. Most certainly not. Definitely not.
…So what other word could he use to explain these feelings?
A strange and messy Gyftmas, but satisfying all the same, I hope.
Gyftrot showing was one of the first things that came to mind for this story. Who could be more perfect for a holiday special? And, one of my favorite parts: it shows off Emmi’s integrity. Even a scary looking fellow like Gyftrot deserves a good breakfast and not being covered in weird decorations. (Seriously, though; look at Gyftrot’s battle sprite and tell me that wouldn’t be a little spooky in real life.)
There were some little tidbits in some of the earlier drafts that didn’t make it into the final story, like Emmibee spending her evenings in bed reading by candlelight, the exact spots that don’t squeak on the stairs, and little things like that. Now that I think about it, I don’t know if flashlights would be prevalent in the Underground, or if they’re a more limited resource. It can’t be that easy to find fresh batteries in the dump heap, but maybe the Underground is able to make batteries with the materials it has. For some reason, my mind was in a kind of archaic rut, so I think I imagined the Underground having more limited resources than it probably does; hence the earlier draft with the powdered milk cookies.
Gaster: What is this feeling? It couldn’t be… the warm fuzzies!? No! I’m too sophisticated and cool to have the warm fuzzies!
It has been said before, by many different sources, and it shall be said again: Emmibee is a smol.
Also, the “messiest Gyftmas tree” is a reference to the song “The Happiest Christmas Tree.” It’s… interesting.
Okay, I think that covers all the extra bits. With Ms. Emmibee’s permission, I’ll be posting this to my fanfiction and AO3 accounts at a later date. I hope everyone had a happy holiday! Let’s hope next year’s just a little bit better. Until then!
~~~
THE WARM FUZZIES!!
Apologies for posting this so late, but I truly truly appreciate and adore this fic. Gyftrot is one of the most interesting monsters, I think, and Emmi’s interaction with it is SO pure????? This is wonderful and I love it and THANK YOU!!!!
Please post it to FF and AO3 at your leisure!!

I should put a title here but I don't know what to put AAA
Tumblr User invader-amethyst: *Has a Greek Gods AU headcanon*
Emmibee: “Hey fic writers, feel free to write—”
Me: *Throws self into the computer screen Super Mario 64 style* I’VE BEEN SUMMONED.
So, yep! invader-amethyst sent in an ask with a Greek Gods AU idea, and Emmibee gave it a stamp of approval. Thus, I wrote. This one actually took a few tries to get started, but I think I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. See you at the bottom!

The Unseen One’s Lesson on Loneliness
The Underworld, for the most part, was made up of stone tunnels and caverns that were bathed a deep blue by the numerous crystals on the walls and ceilings. The entrances to these tunnels and caverns often shifted around, by their own will or the will of their king, which created an infinite combination of paths to wander and explore. Condensation would drip from stalactites into little puddles that never grew or shrank, and the drips and drops echoed throughout the Underworld in a way that soothed some and unnerved most. The goddess of spring was part of the former.
Kore was currently sitting in a cavern with a floor of damp, loamy soil. It had been the first gift given to her by the god of death in person, rather than secretly left for her to discover.
She enjoyed feeling the soil with her hands, watching it fall between her fingers and smooth over her palms. She was, admittedly, a bit indecisive, and had yet to choose what she would grow in this new garden first. Since food was ample in the Underworld, flowers seemed to be the best option, but which flowers should she grow first? Should she start small, with some bushes of roses? Something thematically appropriate to the setting, like some branches of belladonna? So many choices, but which would be just right?
Hence why she was simply enjoying the sensation of dirt on her skin; damp enough to form a shape when pressed, but dry enough not to stick.
A slight tickling sensation on her smallest finger, buried under the soil, made her lift her gaze to see a pale, wriggling string crawl its way across the dirt. A worm friend!
Kore flipped onto her stomach and gently patted the worm. Mm, yes. This was some good soil her husband got her if there were worm friends to find.
The little worm stilled at her touch. Its back end lifted and made what looked like a “come here” gesture before it disappeared under the dirt.
Curious, Kore carefully dug a hole around the worm until she found a small, dead plant. She cradled it in her hands. It was a limp, vine-like stem with wrinkly brown tubes clustered along it. There were no roots, suggesting it had been plucked before being buried there.
Kore smiled. Here was her answer.
She closed her eyes and felt energy, warmth, and light pulse into the plant, which she lowered to the ground so it could take root. She let it stand on its own once it had the strength, and she could hear the soft crinkle of petals regaining their vigor.
She opened her eyes and admired the clusters of red tube-shaped flowers on the bush. It wasn’t very big at all, especially in this huge cavern, but the fiery red blossoms seemed to glow like a real fire in the cool darkness. “Erica flowers,” she said. Then, calling over her shoulder: “In the language of flowers, they mean ‘loneliness’. I don’t suppose you knew that, did you?”
There was a clattering sound, like a rock balanced on a stalagmite had been knocked over suddenly. Then Hades was standing next to her. “How did you know I was here?”
“I always know when you’re here,” she replied, tapping the blooms and watching them bounce slightly at her touch.
“I was wearing my Helm of Darkness. Not even a god can sense me when I wear it.”
“Good thing I’m a goddess, then, eh?”
“Kore…” he stopped himself, and she looked up to see him worrying at the handle of his golden staff.
“It’s okay,” she grinned up at him. “I like it when you call me by my name.”
He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses. She patted the ground beside her, and after a moment, he carefully lowered himself next to her. “The flowers of loneliness…” he hummed to himself.
“Why was it down here?” Kore asked.
“…I was out one day,” he replied, “working on the surface, when I came across a bushel much like this one. My… knowledge of flowers is limited, so flowers shaped like these were strange. I felt a strong draw to them, so I took a branch-full, only to remember too late that I can’t touch most living things. It died in my hand.” He stared hard at the flowers. “The flowers of loneliness,” he repeated. “I suppose it makes some sense.”
“What does?”
“We are alone when we die. A fitting end for a flower meant to symbolize this truth.”
Kore frowned. “Well…” she paused a moment. “I don’t know about that. Look at how many of them there are.” She took his boney hand and guided it to the cluster of red. “You can’t really say they’re alone when they’re bunched together like this. And even when you touched them, they all went together.” His fingertip brushed a blossom, and it didn’t wither. “So they might feel lonely, but they’re not actually as alone as they think they are.” Her hand closed around his and she looked into his eye sockets. “They’re not alone.”
The thrumming echo of dripping water rang in the silence as they looked at each other. Eye sockets, one closed and one wide open, stared into a pair of eyes full of life. His jaw bone was slightly slack, and her smile was warm and gentle.
After a moment, her smile turned a little mischievous. “So… why were you wearing your Helm of Darkness?”
Hades’ skull flushed. “I-it’s not strange for me to have it!”
“In your own territory?”
“I—! Well—! It… may be a habit at this point… when I watch you… it’s not creepy!”
“It isn’t,” Kore laughed. “It just means you’re shy.”
“The god of death is not shy!”
“The god of death is, however, someone who talks about himself in the third person.”
“That means the god of death knows that he’s important.”
The goddess of spring leaned lightly against her husband. “That, he is.”
“Strange woman.” He took a stronger hold of her hand.
“Stubborn old man.” She bumped his shoulder with her head.
***
A major inspiration for the flower I chose for this story came from the second Black Butler Musical, which featured a deep theme about Erica flowers and the loneliness of death. Erica flowers are also called heaths (which are different from but related to heather flowers), and after multiple Google searches, it seems the “fire heath” is the color that means loneliness. Most Erica flowers are white, purple, or pink, but those colors are generally more positive (purple does often mean solitude, though).
Roses, as we know, mean love, which would be perfect for Kore and Hades being in love (and married-ish?); and belladonnas are also called deadly nightshade, which is why it would have been thematic to the setting of the Underworld.
Kore calls Hades her husband, but I’m not actually sure if they’re married in our human sense of the term. Would they have an official “tying of the knot” or would it be more like just something they agree on that’s acknowledged by all the gods?
Where are all the spirits in the Underworld? … Ssh…
*points at the worm* WORM FRIEND! WORM FRIEND!
I originally wanted to include this somewhere in the story, but I imagine that Hades found the Erica flower the day before he saw Kore for the first time. Perfect timing!
Speaking of Hades and Kore, Hades would usually wear his Helm of Darkness when watching Kore from the shadows, and even though she’s bound to the Underworld now, the habit of feeling unseen is hard to break (he’s called the Unseen One for a reason, after all.) How is Kore able to sense him, even when most gods wouldn’t be able to? Perhaps something deeply entwines their souls, deeper than the magic of the helm.
Alright, I think those were the major things I wanted to say. With Ms. Emmibee’s permission, I’ll be posting this to my AO3 and FFN accounts soon. Thanks to invader-amethyst for sending out the spark for this story, and of course to Ms. Emmibee for coming up with this whole AU (and the AUs within that AU). I’ll see you around. Until then!
~~~~~
AAAAA I love this so much!!!!!!
1) I love how you always put meanings into the flowers!!
2) They’re definitely married in some sense; probably had a small, private ceremony with just them and some officiant. Or do gods need an officiant? They pretty much ARE the highest authority.
3) WORM FRIEND
4) I feel like Gaster is just going to be awkward no matter what universe he’s in. Sweet awkward man.
5) Please do post it! I can’t wait to see it!!!!!
Many thanks again for this wonderful story!!!
Birthday fic from Yours the Author!
Ms. Emmibee: is me birthday day.
Me: *Tumbling down a flight of stairs, breaking a comical amount of theater vases that are made to be broken* HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
So yes! It’s Ms. Emmibee’s birthday, so we all know what that means! Presents and (cookie) cake! It’s not possible to send real cookie cake through the internet, though, but a present is a present!
I had actually planned this one out vaguely after the last update. It made sense that we wouldn’t get a lot of time in Temmie Village, since the plot must go on, but I figured most people would appreciate some cute Temmie and Emmibee action. I wrote this all out today. I don’t know if I quite captured the magic of Tem Village, but I like to think there’s a little bit of it here. I’ll let you decide for yourself. See you at the bottom!
What Could it Mean?
“Emmi, I kindly ask—and by ‘kindly’, I mean ‘in a way that won’t cause a scene’—that you stop vibrating so intensely.”
“But it’s Temmie Village, Dr. Gaster! I can’t not be excited!”
“The Temmies are excitable enough without you encouraging them. I’d rather not deal with any more hyperactivity than necessary.”
“Hyperactive or actively hyper?”
“…What?”
“What?”
“…Strange woman.”
“I know. But isn’t that why you like me?” “No more questions. Let’s just—”
“HOI!!!!” Dr. Gaster sighed for ten whole seconds as Emmibee gasped at her first in-person look at a Temmie. She bounced on the toes of her rubber rain boots as the little monster skipped over to them.
She was just as cute as she was in the game, but even smaller; probably no bigger than a munchkin cat. Her quadrupedal body was covered in short, soft white fur, two pairs of ears, a little mane of black hair, and a deep sky-blue shirt over the top half of her body.
Smiling giddily, Emmi pointed at her while grinning at the skeleton companion. “Undoubtedly, a Temmie.”
“Undoubtedly,” Dr. Gaster agreed. “Can we please—”
“HOI!!!” Another Temmie popped up.
“Behold, a Temmie,” Emmi bowed to the newcomer.
“I am aware. Can we—”
Another Temmie trotted over. “Could it be a Temmie?” Emmi wondered.
“Actually, I’m Bob. Nice to meet you,” Bob said. Emmi let out a high-pitched noise.
Dr. Gaster sighed again. “I’m going to the Tem Shop. Can I trust you won’t leave the village?” Emmi was currently chanting “hoi” with the growing group of Temmies. “…I suppose I can.” He made his way to the shop.
One of the Temmies suddenly wiggled her tail the way a cat does before it pounces and leapt up into Emmi’s arms. Emmi extended her arms to catch the Temmie, but a thought suddenly occurred to her: aren’t humans allergic to Temmies? The Temmie landed in her arms, and she instinctively adjusted herself for maximum comfort for the carrier and the carry-ee. Oh wait; I’m a monster now, she remembered. Does that still count? The Temmie she was holding vibrated gently in her arms, and the other Temmies and Bob crowded around her feet, looking a few seconds away from swarming her in a pile of cute. Guess it does.
As much as she would have loved to be swarmed in a pile of cute, Emmi didn’t know when she’d get a chance to explore Temmie Village like this again. Carefully wading through the tiny monsters, she began to look around the small cavern.
True to the game, the walls, ceiling, and floor were made of dark blue stone, but unlike the game, the air was cool and damp and seemed to somehow cast a shiny quality to the stone, if she looked at just the right angle and level of light. There wasn’t any quirky music playing in the background, but the air thrummed—no, vibrated—with an energy that could only be explained by the mysterious power of Temmie.
She took some time to say HOI to each Temmie she passed, admired the rich history of Tem and the statue of Tem, returned the compliments of an adamant Temmie (awawawa! bee lady… such a… cute!!!) and exchanged parenting tips with the parent of a special hardboiled egg (tem and bee… pROUD pARENTS!!!). Emmi considered saying hello to the owner of the Tem Shop, but one peek into the room revealed an irate Dr. Gaster trying to explain why he wouldn’t accept Tem flakes in exchange for all of the items he was selling. It would probably be best to leave him be.
That was when she spotted it: the dancing mushroom, swaying their arms to an invisible tune. Hugging the Temmie she was still holding tighter to her chest, she strode up to the mushroom, swaying her hips and bopping her head to the beat. She giggled and sang with them, “Mushroom dance, mushroom dance… what could it mean?”
The mushroom raised their cap to peer up at her, eyes narrow. “Failure is terrifying,” they said, “but not nearly as terrifying as success.”
The world suddenly stopped; not like a record scratch. It was more like if the planet had stopped spinning, but everyone wasn’t flung off into space. All of the cold and none of the water in the room seemed to cling to Emmi, getting under her raincoat, under her skin, coating her SOUL in an icy sheet. Her breath caught in her throat, her vision tunneled, and there was an intense feeling of being watched…
“Emmi?” The mushroom lowered their cap and went back to swaying. The Temmie in her arms hopped down, her face following a moment after. Emmi looked up to see Dr. Gaster putting something into the pocket of his lab coat and gesturing for her to follow him. “Time to go.”
Emmi’s legs felt a bit weird, like they had almost but not quite fallen asleep, and they were trying to remember how to work. The cold feeling lingered, though not as strongly as it had before Dr. Gaster brought her back to reality. She stumbled backwards, trying not to fall over as she stared at the mushroom again. They weren’t looking at her, preoccupied with their dance. The sudden shift in the mood had left her disoriented and a bit overwhelmed. What that mushroom said… it was way too on the nose for her liking. Had it not been for Dr. Gaster, she would have stood there for the rest of time as she tried to make sense of how that mushroom knew…
She would be grateful to the doctor for saving her from herself, even if he never found out.
“Coming…” she replied, taking one last look at the mushroom before steadily following Dr. Gaster out of Temmie Village.
***
It’s probably a good thing Emmibee didn’t go to the Temmie in the wall. She definitely didn’t need a double dose of the feeling of being watched. Poor Emmi. How did that mushroom know?
“Hyperactive or actively hyper” was a play on the joke “working hard or hardly working”. I was originally going to put a fourth wall breaking joke in that part of the story, but it occurred to me that Dr. Gaster wouldn’t let that go so easily.
Emmi identifying the Temmies (hey, that rhymed!) is a reference to the snow poffs of Snowdin. You all probably already know this, but interacting with every snow poff will tell you that, indeed, you are interacting with a snow poff.
Temmies have a rich history. What is that history? It’s rich. That’s all you need to know, and all you’ll ever find out, probably.
Emmi is going to be a parent sometime soon (skelebaby boys!), so it’d be a good idea to get parenting tips from an experienced parent, even if that parent’s child is a hardboiled egg. Every bit helps!
The scene with the mushroom is what really inspired me to write this. Visually, the shading in that penultimate panel was stunning. I wanted to translate what it looked like Emmibee was feeling into words. What did she see? What did she feel, physically and emotionally? These are questions I have to know the answers to as an author, and if they’re not written already, I’ll write down my own interpretations.
Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EMMIBEE! One year older, bolder, and wiser! Despite everything, I hope this is a good one for you. I mean it. I’ll be posting this to FFN and AO3, if you’re okay with that. Looking forward to more of your content, be it a full comic page or a textpost gushing about a cute kitten gif. Until then! ~~~ AAAAAAAAAA THANK YOU SO MUCH????? I really really loved doing this scene and you did it justice absolutely PERFECTLY. Emmi’s excitement about experiencing the Underground knows no bounds!! (Also, her dancing along with the mushroom is EXACTLY what I was imagining)
I’m really happy you enjoyed the page! It feels kind of filler-y to me, but it really is important to both the narrative and tone of the story. More pages will be coming soon I promise!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE BIRTHDAY WISHES
Feel free to post this on your FF and AO3 accounts!
THANK YOU AGAIN AAAAAAAAAAAA
Ms. Emmibee makes some Greek God AU Emster comics, so I follow immediately with a fanfic WEEEEE
The title of this post kind of says it all, but hey! I’m Yours The Author, and if Ms. Emmibee will allow it, the following story will be posted on my fanfiction and AO3 accounts, sooner or later. Like the first fanfic I posted here, it combines a few of the comics and even some fan art, to an extent (shout out to amee-racle for the inspiration of one of the scenes here!) into a semi-coherrent story. I originally started with an introduction scene that showed the Kore (Emmi) and Hades (Gaster) seeing but not meeting each other for the first time, but I realized the main scene I wanted to get to could be more concise and still deliver most of the same information, so I did some reworking. I hope you like it! This involves the “pomegranate” comic, mentions some stuff related to the “jewels” comic, and has a reference to amee-racle’s fan art of Kore and Hades with flower crowns! See you at the bottom!
The Meeting and the Benefits of Breaking the Rules of the Underworld
“My name is Kore. I’m the goddess of spring,” the floating humanoid in the long dress stated.
The skeleton god stared at her. “I am Hades, the King of the Underworld.” He looked a little prideful when he said that, but his expression quickly reverted to one of bewilderment. “Now I’ll ask again: how did you get down here?”
“You left the cave open when you came down here,” Kore replied.
“…Oh.” It was silent for a few moments, aside from the distant drips of water from the cave’s ceiling and the breeze Kore naturally stirred. Hades slowly pointed behind her. “The exit is that way.”
“I know.”
“…Then why don’t you leave?”
“I don’t wanna.”
“…Why?”
“I wanted to talk to you.”
“Ah, you’re here on business. Very well; what do you wish to discuss?”
Kore held out her cupped hands. In the light of the crystals hanging from the walls and ceiling, a small pile of jewels glittered in her palms. All sorts of stones, in all sorts of colors. “You’re the one who’s been leaving these for me to find, right?” She asked.
“A-ah…” Hades blushed and tightened his grip on his golden staff. “I just—you—you liked that star sapphire I dropped, so I thought I’d let you find more,” he admitted.
Kore shifted the stones around to examine the smooth blue gem with a white star pattern in the middle. “Well… thank you!” she grinned happily, and Hades quickly adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses.
“Y-you’re welcome…”
“And I have something for you!”
“…You do?”
“Yep! I made this for you!” She put the stones away in the pouch tied to her waist, then lifted the flower crown off of her head and placed it over his own shiny crown of metal.
Hades blinked and lifted the flower crown a bit to inspect it. It was a crown of large roses, alternating between yellow blossoms with red tips and lavender blooms. The woven stems weren’t thorny at all, and they didn’t wilt, suggesting they were made with magic. “…Oh.” He slowly let the crown settle on his head. “…Thank you.”
“You’re welcome!”
It was quiet again. The pink and yellow blossoms woven into Kore’s long and wild locks shed their petals into the breeze, only to regrow and repeat the process. It was a very picturesque scene.
If Hades had lips, he’d probably be biting them nervously. This little goddess was stirring… unnecessary feelings, as well as a breeze. “You should probably go—” he began.
“Got any snacks around here?”
“…Wouldn’t… you rather eat the food from above?”
“I want to try new things.”
“Well…” he thought for a moment, then raised his free hand towards the wall of the cave. It shifted open, revealing a path that led to a garden. Kore floated through the garden, technically impolite for not having waited for permission to enter, but forgiven nonetheless. Hades followed after her. “Many from above believe that no life can exist in the Underworld,” he explained. “This is both true and misleading. Plants that die above ground regrow down here; their life force entwining with the Underworld’s logic. The food in this garden can be eaten by gods and even mortals who live above, bUT–!” He gestured wildly for her to stop.
Kore had picked a shiny red pomegranate and ripped it in half with her bare hands, revealing the glistening seeds. She had been about to dig in, but paused and looked up at him, awaiting an explanation. Hades straightened his long black tunic and tried to look calm. “But you must not eat that pomegranate.”
“Huh?” Kore cocked her head to the side, hovering at eye level. “Why not?”
“The pomegranate is sacred here. It represents the very nature of the Underworld: life,” he gestured to the little spring goddess, “and death,” he put a hand to his sternum. “It is connected to the Underworld, just as I am. If you eat its seeds, you will be bound to the Underworld, and…” he blushed, “to me.”
“Ooooh,” Kore hummed.
“Indeed.”
“…”
Without breaking eye contact, Kore shoveled every seed in both halves of the pomegranate into her mouth. Hades’ jaw dropped open, sputtering sounds barely escaping his teeth as she licked the juice from her fingers, still looking him right in the eye sockets.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” He finally managed.
“You just explained to me what it means.”
“YES, BUT—”
“So when should the wedding be?”
“THE WHAT?!”
Kore pulled some of the flowers out of her hair and began to weave them together as if she didn’t just seal her soul to a cave under the ground. “Oh, can we invite my mother, too? I feel like the Goddess of Nature wouldn’t take kindly to not being invited to her daughter’s wedding.”
“M-mother Nature?”
“Mm.”
“She is going to destroy me…” Hades covered his face with his hands.
Kore finished the new crown and set it on her head: an alternating mix of yellow primroses and pink cherry blossoms. “Don’t worry, I won’t let her. Besides, being a goddess bound to the Underworld doesn’t mean I have to be here all the time, right?”
“Well… technically, but—”
“So I can spend some time above ground and spend the rest of the time with you!”
“I—I! I…”
Kore’s smile grew smaller. “Do you not want to…?”
“No! I mean—I… won’t make a very good husband. I’ll disappoint you.”
“I’ll be the judge of that.” She hovered next to him and gently bumped his skull with her head. “C’mon, let’s go say hello to your new mother-in-law!”
“This will not end well…”
***
I don’t know much about the logic of eating food from the Underworld in this AU (Hades specifically mentions the significance of the pomegranate, and that had to have come from somewhere), so I went with the concept that plants that die before their time or under specific circumstances can grow and bear fruit in the Underworld, and anyone can eat any of that food /except/ the pomegranates. In reality, you likely can’t eat any food from the Underworld, but it was just a thought.
Hades can open a cave to go back to the Underworld, but sometimes he forgets to close it behind him, hence how Kore got in.
Flower and jewel symbolism:
Roses generally mean affection, but the color of the rose is often extremely important! Yellow roses with red at the tips of the petals represents falling in love, while lavender-colored roses represent love at first sight.
Star sapphires are often called “the stones of destiny”, and can extend mental focus and knowledge.
Sakura blossoms are practically the living symbol of spring and can represent renewal.
Primroses represent young love, and yellow primroses can represent spring and the sun.
Hades’ “I’ll disappoint you” line is based on something similar he says in a Zarla MercyPlates comic, where Papyrus tells him to be good, and Gaster says something like “I’ll try, but I’ll just disappoint you.” Ah… parallels.
Alright, I think that’s everything. Let me know if it’s okay to post these on my fanfiction and AO3 accounts. I’ll see you around! Keep being awesome! ~~~ No YOU keep being awesome!!! This is absolutely lovely hhhhhh
You’re more than welcome to post this on AO3 and FF. I’ll definitely post it here!
Now to respond to the notes!!
The pomegranate thing is great! The pomegranate symbolism from the comic is actually based on its IRL symbolism, which is similar across many cultures (representing life and death, and also love sometimes), and I think your explanation is really cool!
Hades forgetting to close the cave door is a big mood tbh.
I recognized the “I’ll disappoint you” quote and i CRY
Have I mentioned how much I love flower symbolism??? I LOVE how you used that in this!!
Thank you so much!!!!
Bedtime Stories (Emster)
Bro I had a lightbulb. Lemme know if writing fanfiction is okay or not, but this was just too cute and I had to share it! It was based off the bedtime stories comic!!!
********
“But the prince travelled from house to house, looking for anyone who the shoe could fit. He came across monsters with big feet, monsters with little feet, and monsters with no feet at all! But he never came across the young, beautiful monster that he remembered from that night, with the lilac tentacles that slipped perfectly into the glass slipper."
Papyrus’ head lulled against Sans and his eyelids began to flutter. Bee had to contain a chuckle, as she’d learned by this point that whenever she did chuckle at the two sleepyheads they instantly became alert and would demand at least one more story.
"Finally, he came across the grand house of Cinderella and her family. When he knocked on the door, the stepsisters were overjoyed! Their tails wagged and their ears perked up as they welcomed him inside. However, both of their feet were too big to fit in the shoe.”
Sans smiled to himself. Even at this young of an age, there was joy in the karmic justice of the stepsisters’ fate.
“Cinderella, meanwhile, stayed to sweeping the stairs, listening to the conversation, trying to figure out some way that she could enter without her stepsisters stopping her. The prince sighed as both of the step sisters failed, but as he turned to leave, Cinderella ran down the stairs and called out to him."
Bee cleared her throat. She was never good at doing voices.
”‘Wait! I would like to try on the slipper!’ The prince swiveled around. He could already feel the memories of the beautiful maiden coming back to him, though this time she was in rags, and covered with ash.“
”'My love, is it truly you?’“ Her voice switched to a deep register, and the two brothers chuckled at her, clearly not getting it close to what an actual man sounded like.
"But, as she and the prince got closer to each other, the step mother, lurking in the corner, had a wicked idea. She pretended to be approaching the stepsisters, but on her way over, she pumped into the prince, and he dropped the slipper. As soon as it hit the floor, it immediately shattered into a thousand pieces."
"Oh no! How are they gonna get married now?!” Papyrus looked genuinely concerned. Even though she should know by now that every story that she told would set Papyrus on edge, every single night she was always alarmed by just how empathetic he was. It made her proud.
“I dunno bro, maybe that, uh, fish godmother can help?” Sans responded lazily. At least Bee was sure that he was paying attention.
“Cinderella merely chuckled to herself. 'There’s no need to worry, Your Majesty, for you see, I have the others.’ And she reached into her pockets and pulled out the seven other glass slippers for each of her tentacles.”
“Hooray!” Papyrus snuggled under the blankets a little closer to his brother.
“And so, the two went back to the castle and were married that day. And they lived happily ever after. The end."
"What happened to the stepsisters? And the mom? Did she leave them?” Papyrus’ eyes widened.
“They weren’t very nice to her, bro.” Sans was always the more strait-laced.
“Maybe not, but I still think that they deserve a second chance.” Bee could feel her cheeks glow with pride.
“I think Cinderella agrees with you, Papyrus. She invited her stepmother and stepsisters to live at the castle with her, and over time, because of her kindness, the sisters and mother felt guiltier and guiltier. One day, they got on their knees and begged her for forgiveness. And she gave it to them."
"See. I told you.” Papyrus playfully nudged his brother.
“I don’t know. If I were Cinderella, I would want that fish godmother to give me a car or something. And g. So I could drive away and buy a house.” Sans did take after his father.
“Well, you can think about that tomorrow,” Bee leaned in and gave each brother gentle kisses on the top of their skull, “Goodnight Sans. And goodnight Papyrus.”
“G'night.” Papyrus yawned.
“Yeah, g'night.” Sans also yawned, though he tried to suppress it.
Bee turned off the lamp and the room was plunged into calming darkness.
“Sweet dreams.” She whispered, before gently edging out the room and shutting the door.
She popped her head into the bedroom. Gaster was nowhere to be found. Well, he only goes to two locations in this house, and the bedroom is empty. Lab it is.
Bee climbed down the stairs, listening for any sounds that could give her an indication of just what had kept him up so late. No explosions or screaming, which was always a good sign, but no confused hums or joyful muttering as he copied down his latest theory.
She gently knocked on the door, before doing as all mom’s do and opening it without waiting for answer.
There, in front of her, was a delirious Gaster, with small dark circles that she didn’t know he could have under his eyes. He was writing feverishly in a notebook while various colorful substances in jars and vials on the desk danced in the background.
“Are they asleep?” He didn’t look up.
“They are. That means you should at least try to get some sleep as well."
He sighed before rubbing his face with his bony fingers. He was in no mood to protest.
"I know.” He dropped the pencil and stood up from his desk, draping an arm around Bee’s shoulder as the two walked out of the laboratory together. As they passed through the doorframe, his arm extended a little further around her shoulder to switch off the light. The two traipsed up the stairs.
“What story was it tonight?” He peered at her from the side.
“Cinderella."
"Never heard of it.”
“It’s about a girl who’s stuck with an evil family, but she ends up going to a ball in secret with really nice clothes because of her fairy godmother, but she has to leave before midnight, but before she goes she leaves behind a glass slipper. The prince fell in love with her that night, but since she’s gone, he takes the glass slipper and tries it on every woman in the kingdom until he finds the one that can fit it. So he finds her, and they get married.”
“Makes perfect sense.” His sarcasm gave Bee a trace of a smile.
“Even in the long version it doesn’t make any sense. Especially since our Cinderella had 8 tentacles, so she had a bunch of slippers."
The two reached the top of the stairs, and Gaster shut the door to the stairway behind them. He moved like clockwork, as this ritual of her retrieving him from the confines of his lab had become a nightly ritual for them. As he shut the door, the two continued walking. As they approached the bedroom, he turned his head to the side and looked at her directly.
"That’s a human story, right?” Bee nodded in response to his question.
“Then why are the characters monsters?"
Bee just chuckled.
"They’re not monsters in the version I was told, silly. I just,” she gestured inanely, “changed around some stuff a little bit."
Gaster’s confusion did not vanish from his face.
"I think that the boys deserve to see monsters in the stories that I tell them. It would suck to only get told human stories, don’t you think?"
Gaster contemplated the idea a little bit, before nodding.
"Interesting. I never would’ve thought of that myself.” He began to unbutton his shirt, while Bee pulled her dress over her head.
'Well, good thing I’m here then.“ The two continued to undress in silence before slipping into comfortable night clothes, and then collapsing in bed.
Gaster held Bee close. He could feel the thumping of her soul. Sleep began to droop in both of their eyes as they settled into bed with eachother.
"Thank god you’re here.” Gaster mumbled into her curly hair as the two drifted off into sleep.
~~~~~~~
Um?? UM?? UMMM????????

Okay I Have a Title This Time You Ready? Hear Me Out: Shenani-wings (Badum-tish!)
Heard you hurt your back and legs while trying to make the pattern for that cool sounding 50s dress you were talking about (at least, I think that’s what “drafting the pattern” means; I sewed a pillow shut once, I’m sure you can tell), so I decided to post this. Hope it makes you feel a little better!
Guess who’s back? It’s me, Yours The Author, coming to you with another fanfiction and something of a request of my own. I’ll state my request here so you can make a decision before the story begins: I don’t have a Tumblr, but I do have a fanfiction.net account that I’m fairly active on. Only if it’s okay with you, I would like to ask permission to post this story and the previous one I submitted on my account, with credit to you for the characters and AUs, of course (if you have a title in mind for that first fic, I’d be more than willing to hear it, because otherwise it would take me a while to come up with one of my own). If you’d rather I didn’t, that’s perfectly fine! I’m more than satisfied being featured on your Tumblr, so I won’t fret if you say no. Anyway, the fanfiction. Yes.
I don’t know where chapter two of the main story will start—right where we ended the first? Sometime/distance later? Who knows? —but this scenario of shenanigans with wings (get it? Get it?) popped into my mind one morning as I was slowly preparing to get up for the day, and I’d like to give it a shot. Let me know what you think! It’s a little more comedic than my last one, but I guess I just tend to default to comedy sometimes; hope that’s okay!
Trigger Warning (if it can be called that): mild action, awkward socializing, and a blatant Looney Tunes reference.
***
Shenani-wings
It was awkwardly silent as Emmibee and Gaster stood in the elevator that went from New Home to The Core. Gaster had watched her quietly as she looked with awe at the Capital’s city scape around the corner from Asgore’s house, but now that they were in an enclosed space with nothing but the shiny buttons and each other to look at, he seemed very interested in those buttons.
“…Nice weather, huh?” She said. She then proceeded to stare intensely at the corner of the elevator as Gaster stared just as intensely at her.
“The weather is always the same. Also, technically, there is no weather. We’re under a mountain,” he replied.
“…Oh yeah.”
The awkwardness cut deeper.
Emmi practically leapt out of the elevator when the doors opened, Gaster following more calmly after her. She looked around, once again amazed by the world she had inserted herself into. She had played and watched play-throughs of Undertale enough times to know the basic colors of the world, but there was only so much detail that could be shown via Earthbound-style graphics.
The dark blue walls were polished enough to reflect her face when she stood a foot away, and when she reached out to touch the wall, she felt a warm, thrumming energy zing through her fingertips. The lighter blue floor was also shiny, but not slippery. The traction was great, (there was no need to worry about slipping and falling off a crosswalk and being erased from existence haha what?) and she could feel another energy, this one a bit colder, thrumming through her legs from the floor. It was bizarre and exhilarating and nerve-wracking all at once. Perhaps it was because she was technically a new SOUL, physically in the strange world she had come to love via a video game. She wanted to run, jump, fly—could she fly? She—
“If you’ve finished examining the wall, we should probably move along,” Gaster’s voice cut in impatiently.
Emmi blinked and gave an apologetic smile to the skeleton before making a “lead the way” gesture.
They continued through The Core, Gaster leading the way and keeping Emmi from wandering into the wrong rooms out of curiosity. Eventually they reached another elevator, this one leading to a path that was a gradient of blue to orange. They were approaching Hotland.
Emmi looked up and saw a tall building with a pair of glass doors leading into a room lit with a golden light. Gaster paused here. “There are people in here,” he said.
“I would hope so,” Emmi replied.
“I’d rather not deal with introducing you to everyone at the moment, so keep your head down.”
“What’s the magic word?” Gaster slowly turned and looked at her. Emmi stared back. They might have stood there for a while if Emmi hadn’t decided to let him win this round. “Please. The word was please,” she said quietly as she opened the doors and kept her eyes on the floor. Gaster followed after a second.
She would have loved to look at all lights and colors, architecture and people around her, but she was a woman of her word, so down her head stayed. Most of the monsters that were in the building must have been busy with their own thing, though, since no one seemed to call out to her or the doctor.
Then they were out of the building, and Emmi took the opportunity to whirl around and gaze up at the MTT Resort front. Like the Core, it was just like it was in the game, but also… more. The shiny gold letters above the doors glittered, as if there were lights hidden in the surface that twinkled. A humid breeze (?) rustled the bushes adorning the sides of the doors. She could hear chittering laughter coming from one of the alleys beside the building; Catty and Bratty, most likely.
Gaster cleared his throat (? Again?) and Emmi quickly snapped to attention and followed him away from the Resort, deep into Hotland. True to its name, it was hot. She wiped sweat from her forehead multiple times, and the hot steam puzzles didn’t help matters (turns out such puzzles are a lot harder to do when you can’t see all the launch platforms from above). Gaster wasn’t of much help either, but he sighed with what Emmi hoped was a bit of relief and a smidgen of pride when she landed on the other side of the final puzzle.
After wandering along the craggy orange paths for what felt like another half hour, they reached the Lab. “Air conditioning!” Emmi breathed.
Gaster glanced at her. “Only for less than a minute.”
“It’s all I need.” The doors opened, and Emmi sped walked into the cool air, taking deep, sighing breaths and smiling up at the ceiling.
“Dramatic,” Gaster muttered, shaking his head. From the corner of her eye, it looked like Gaster had a slightly amused smile on his teeth. Probably the best interaction she had had with him yet.
The first thing Emmi noticed about the Lab was how… clean everything was. There were no trash bins full of ramen noodle cups or crumpled up papers, no tables covered in anime figurines and more papers, and the big computer that she recalled Alphys using to monitor the player was gone. It almost looked empty without it all. Emmi thought to ask about it, but figured questions were probably better saved for once they reached Snowdin.
Once back outside the Lab, Gaster led her down a flight of stairs to the river. The stone floor changed from orange-y red to a deep blue, and the cooling sound of rushing water eased Emmi’s nerves in a way she hadn’t noticed she needed.
And there, as if they had been waiting for the two of them, was the Riverman (or River woman? It didn’t matter). “Tra la la. More than one new chapter is about to begin. Would you like to ride on my boat?”
“Hmm. Haven’t heard that one before,” Gaster said, more to himself than to Emmi, but he stepped onto the boat and sat on the seat directly behind the Riverperson. Emmi carefully sat opposite him, slinging off the back pack Asgore had given her and putting it under her seat. “Snowdin,” Gaster requested.
“Please,” Emmi finished, rolling her shoulders and arching her back a bit. Her wings (yes, she reminded herself for the twentieth time, she had wings now) weren’t super sensitive, but the pressure of having a relatively heavy backpack press into them for an hour felt… weird. Out of curiosity she tried to flutter her wings a bit. Nothing happened. It was like trying to tell you hand to move, the way you tell yourself what to have for breakfast: it just doesn’t work that way.
“Please and thank you. Magic words, indeed,” The Riverperson said. Suddenly, the boat rose above the surface of the water. Emmibee gasped in surprise and clung to the seat with her hands.
Gaster raised a bone brow at her. “I had assumed you knew that this happened sometimes,” he said. There was that barest trace of what Emmi could only hope was amusement.
“Seeing it happen is different from actually being there,” she explained, easing her grip.
“Tra la la. Look, it likes you.”
“What?” Emmi and Gaster turned to the front of the boat. The head of the boat was shaped like a dog/cat hybrid, and it seemed to have turned its head to smile at her. Emmi found herself rising to her feet and reaching towards it; to give it a head pat or hug, she wasn’t sure. “Aww…” she cooed. She was so focused on the doggy-kitty, she barely heard the fluttering sound behind her, like brand new sheets of cellophane flapping in the wind at high speed. She also didn’t notice Gaster looking over her shoulder with something akin to wonder.
“We are off,” The Riverperson said.
…Huh?
The boat jerked forward and bounded across the surface of the water. Emmi probably would have fallen back onto her seat under other circumstances, but the flapping sound stopped with a snap, and she looked behind her just in time to see her wings spread out like a sail before the sudden burst of air flowing by sent her flying back off of the boat. “AAAAAAA—!”
PING!
Something blue flashed in her vision and she felt a pair of hands scoop under her arms and pull her back to the boat. One second later, her face was in a warm fabric surface and there was a wheezing sound in her ear.
It was easy enough to put two and two together: her wings, acting on their own accord, went kite-mode and sent her airborne. Gaster had summoned magical hands to grab her before she went too far, and now she was in his arms. She couldn’t pinpoint what the wheezing sound was, though.
She peeked up at the skeleton and saw him staring down at her, both eyes glowing a mix of yellow and pink. The wheezing sound was coming from between his clenched teeth. Apparently, if you startled a skeleton enough, they’d start wheezing. They stared at each other for all of five seconds. Emmi broke the silence with the first thing that came to mind:
“Ehhh… What’s up, Doc?” Then she smacked her face back into Gaster’s chest to suppress her hysteric laughter.
“Tro lo lo,” the Riverperson laughed. Gaster did not seem to see the humor of the situation.
“DON’T EVER DO THAT AGAIN!” He cried with what was so obviously worry and concern, Emmi was now wheezing herself, trying to stop laughing. “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I’D DO IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO YOU?!”
Emmi sobered quickly at that. She looked up at him again. “What would you do?” she asked.
“…” Gaster opened his jaw, then shut it again, desperately trying to come up with something clever and witty and aloof. “…I don’t know,” he finally said. “Just… don’t do that again.”
“Okay. I’m sorry, Dr. Gaster,” Emmi replied, even though she technically hadn’t meant to do any of this.
“A bee in the hand is worth two bushes,” the Riverperson quipped.
“What does that even mean?” Gaster groaned.
“We’ve arrived. Tra la la, both of you.” The boat dropped like a rock onto the surface and Emmi yelped, clinging tightly to Gaster. She hadn’t noticed it had gotten colder until she was no longer about to fall off the boat, but looking out to the side, she saw a pretty layer of white snow covering the ground next to the river.
Gaster quickly stood, grabbed a strap of Emmi’s back pack, and got off the boat, crunching the snow underfoot. The boat got back up on its legs, turned around, and ran back the way it came.
Gaster and Emmi stood there for a few seconds. Or rather, Gaster stood. He had yet to put Emmi down, and as much Emmi would have liked to stay near his warm, beating SOUL, she knew he’d never forgive her if she let him walk into the town with her like this. “You can put me down now, doctor,” she said.
Gaster blinked and scrambled to put her down without actually throwing her tiny body onto the snow, shoving the backpack into her arms when he had accomplished this. He straightened his lab coat and cleared his throat. “Ahem. Yes. Well, my house is less than a minute away. You should probably put on your coat.”
Emma made to reach into her bag, then paused and shook her head. “I can handle it.”
“…What?”
“I can handle it for a bit. Let’s go.”
“There is literal ice on the ground.”
“I kind of like the cold.”
“Your wings could freeze off.”
“Then we should move quickly, huh?”
“…Fine.” Emmi grinned up at him, pleased she had claimed her first verbal victory. Gaster adjusted his glasses, then blinked again and forced his hands to his sides. His eyes were still glowing, though they were much more pink than yellow now. “Let’s go. We have much to discuss—”
“Um, doctor?”
“What is it?”
“Your eyes,” she gestured to his face. “You might want to—”
Gaster put his hand to his good eye and seemed to notice the pink light reflecting on his bones. He blushed and blinked rapidly until the light went away. Yep, Emmi thought. This is the man I’m going to care for along with his children for the rest of my life. So fine.
“Let’s go,” Gaster repeated, pointing down the path. “And… thank you, for… that.”
“You’re welcome, Dr. Gaster.”

I can’t help but feel I have a tendency to start the story way ahead of the action, which fills the beginning with unrelated details, but maybe that’s part of the charm? I wouldn’t know, I don’t get a lot of feedback these days on my stories. But anyway, yeah.
I imagine suddenly having wings, even if they’re technically nonfunctional (at this point), could present some… unique situations. Emmi’s wings flutter when she’s excited (and Gaster thinks it’s cute), so I imagine they might react to other emotions, such as sticking out when startled, drooping when sad, etc. (What’s that? Emmi’s wings are technically under her new shirt she got from Asgore? And therefore this scenario couldn’t happen? And also her wings might not be strong enough to lift her whole body like this? … Shhh…)
I don’t know if all people notice these things when looking around, but I always love to look at as much of the lights, colors, and architecture in a new place as possible: big cities and rolling valleys of trees especially. People are kind of just there, unless I’m at an anime convention; then people are put into that first group, too.
*Bites a carrot* Ehhh… What’s up, Doc? I have no idea if Emmibee would be the type to quip in a situation as sudden as the one seen here (clearly, I have been watching too much Real Time Fandub Games), but minds do weird things sometimes; something I’m all too familiar with myself. Why Looney Tunes? I don’t know, I couldn’t think of a better quote that mentions a doctor (wait, here’s one: I’m a doctor, not an escalator!) Also I like comedy. Sue me. (Please do not.)
I had to use a lot of maps of the Underground for this chapter. I kind of forgot about the steam puzzles and where each elevator went until after I saw it and I was like “Oh. Welp.” I’m not actually sure how you would solve the steam puzzles if you weren’t able to visually map out your every move. Gaster has probably done this five hundred times and knows the right way by heart (or soul, I guess), but Emmi has never seen the puzzle from this perspective, and I’d be very surprised if she had taken the time to memorize each puzzle in the game before going into the world. Even then, perspective can change a lot.
Skeleton Eye Glowing! Pink and yellow, based on the correlating emotions on Zarla’s eye color chart. Yellow usually means fear or stress (and is also Gaster’s natural color), and pink means surprise or embarrassment. Gaster becomes more embarrassed once he realizes he’s been holding Emmi like a teddy bee to himself for half a boat ride, and it takes a second for him to return to his stoic, cool-guy persona. He really does appreciate Emmi looking out for his dignity, though.
I actually loved writing the Riverperson more than I thought I would? They’re just so cryptic while also being straightforward, but in a way that I? Like? Get? And understand? It’s like they’re speaking in poetry while also screwing with their patrons, and I’m just down for that. I’m sure I don’t have to tell anyone, but the line “More than one chapter is about to begin” refers to the meta of the story’s literal next chapter beginning soon, as well as the chapter in the life of Emmi, the life of Gaster, the life of the boys, and the life of them all as a family. Also, “A bee in the hands is worth two bushes” is a play on “an apple in the hand is worth two bushes” (See Veggietales: Larry Boy and the Bad Apple [which I don’t own]), which is a play on the actual phrase “a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush”. Technically, this phrase means “you should be content with what you have instead of losing it all to get more”, but I’ve always read it as “a small amount of something hard to get brings more joy than a lot of somethings you could see any day of the week.“ In this instance in the story, the Riverperson is referring to the latter, and is also just commenting on how rare it is for Gaster to be holding any person, and especially a special bee that got to him through special means.
Emmibee’s favorite part of the Underground is Snowdin, “no contest”. I would assume this is not only for aesthetic reasons (who can resist a snow-covered Gyftmas village?) but also for preference reasons. Emmibee was very immediate in her response to where in the Underground she wanted to live (Snowdin), which may have been so she’d be near Gaster, but I think it would make sense if she preferred snowier places anyway. Hence, she appreciates brisk, cooler temperatures to warmer ones, though a balance is always important. Freezing cold for a short amount of time could be exhilarating. Would her wings freeze off? Dragonflies survive the winter through some means, why can’t a bee monster? (Also, the whole monster thing; weather may not be as applicable to wing safety.)
Anyway, I think that’s all of the after thoughts I have. Thank you for reading all the way to the bottom! Maybe one day I’ll write another story for this AU. It’s a lot of fun! The AU, I mean. And also writing for the AU. Anyway, I’ll see you around. Until then!
~~~
okay #1: this is ADORABLE AND I LOVE IT SO MUCH
#2: it does make me feel better!!
#3: You’re correct in that “drafting a pattern” means making one! I’m using vintage drafting instructions for a vintage dress pattern, which is very exciting.
#4: I wouldn’t mind at all if you posted your stories, as long as you link them back to my and Zarla’s blogs! I would prefer if you posted on AO3, but since you’re already active on FF that’s just fine too. Send me the link when you post them and I’ll give you a promo!
#5: As far as names go, ah.... I’m no good at names either, honestly. It depends on what you want to emphasize in the story. What do you consider the crux of that particular chapter? Seeing Emma, her relationship with her father, Wings’ conversation with ZD or his mother? Maybe family relationships in general? That might be a good angle since that was the majority of the story.
#6: This particular chapter is such an interesting take on the next leg of the story! You really captured Emmi’s excitement in being in the Underground for the first time, as well as her gentle teasing but caring attitude toward Gaster. “Yep, I’m gonna have this man’s babies.” OKAY NOT REALLY WHAT SHE SAID BUT THAT ENERGY THO
#7: I dont like to stomp on headcanons so I won’t address most of them, but I do want to comment on Emmi’s favorite place in the underground being Snowdin since that directly relates to me: My favorite place is Snowdin because it’s the only place in the Underground that truly feels like home. I actually hate the cold, haha. But the fact that the skelebros/Gaster live there, the music is lovely, and there’s Grillby’s and the librarby and gentle furry folk, it really speaks to my small-town-girl heart. Emmi’s main reason for requesting to go to Snowdin is definitely because of Gaster, but it’s a special place to me because it feels like home.
#8: The comedy is great, the fluff is great, I’m just. I love this and I love you and you do great work
