Ten Interesting Pakistani Novels
Under the Persimmon Tree by Suzanne Staples (Summary by Amazon)
Najmah, a young Afghan girl whose name means "star," suddenly finds herself alone when her father and older brother are conscripted by the Taliban and her mother and newborn brother are killed in an air raid. An American woman, Elaine, whose Islamic name is Nusrat, is also on her own. She waits out the war in Peshawar, Pakistan, teaching refugee children under the persimmon tree in her garden while her Afghan doctor husband runs a clinic in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan. Najmah's father had always assured her that the stars would take care of her, just as Nusrat's husband had promised that they would tell Nusrat where he was and that he was safe. As the two look to the skies for answers, their fates entwine. Najmah, seeking refuge and hoping to find her father and brother, begins the perilous journey through the mountains to cross the border into Pakistan. And Nusrat's persimmon-tree school awaits Najmah's arrival. Together, they both seek their way home.
2.) The Diary of a Social Butterfly by Moni Mohsin (Summary by Amazon)
This is the hugely entertaining journal of a socialite in Lahore. Pakistan may be making headlines - but Butterfly is set to conquer the world. 'Everyone knows me. All of Lahore, all of Karachi, all of Isloo - oho, baba, Islamabad - half of Dubai, half of London and all of Khan Market and all the nice, nice bearers in Imperial Hotel also...No ball, no party, no dinner, no coffee morning, no funeral, no GT - Get-Together, baba - is complete without me.' Meet Butterfly, Pakistan's most lovable, silly, socialite. An avid party-goer-inspired misspeller, and unwittingly acute observer of Pakistani high society, Butterfly is a woman like no other. In her world, SMS becomes S & M and people eat 'three tiara cakes' while shunning 'do number ka manual. 'What cheeks!' as she would say. As her country faces tribulations - from 9/11 to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto - Butterfly glides through her world, unfazed, untouched, and stopped short only by the chip in her manicure. Wicked, irreverent, and hugely entertaining, "The Diary of a Social Butterfly" gives you a delicious glimpse into the parallel universe of the have-musts.
3.) Maps for Lost Lovers by Nadeem Aslam (Summary by Amazon)
If Gabriel García Márquez had chosen to write about Pakistani immigrants in England, he might have produced a novel as beautiful and devastating as Maps for Lost Lovers. Jugnu and Chanda have disappeared. Like thousands of people all over England, they were lovers and living together out of wedlock. To Chanda’s family, however, the disgrace was unforgivable.  Perhaps enough so as to warrant murder. As he explores the disappearance and its aftermath through the eyes of Jugnu’s worldly older brother, Shamas, and his devout wife, Kaukab, Nadeem Aslam creates a closely observed and affecting portrait of people whose traditions threaten to bury them alive. The result is a tour de force, intimate, affecting, tragic and suspenseful.
4.) A Season for Martyrs by Bina Shah (Summary by Amazon)
October 2007. Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto returns home after eight years of exile to seek political office once more. Assigned to cover her controversial arrival is TV journalist Ali Sikandar, the estranged son of a wealthy landowner from the interior region of Sindh. While her presence ignites fierce protests and assassination attempts, Ali finds himself irrevocably drawn to the pro-democracy People’s Resistance Movement, a secret that sweeps him into the many contradictions of a country still struggling to embrace modernity. As Shah weaves together the centuries-old history of Ali’s feudal family and its connection to the Bhuttos, she brilliantly reveals a story at the crossroads of the personal and the political, a chronicle of one man’s desire to overcome extremity to find love, forgiveness, and even identity itself.
5.) Karachi, You’re Killing Me! by Saba Imtiaz (Summary by Amazon)
Ayesha is a twenty-something reporter in one of the world’s most dangerous cities. Her assignments range from showing up at bomb sites and picking her way through scattered body parts to interviewing her boss’s niece, the couture-cupcake designer. In between dicing with death and absurdity, Ayesha despairs over the likelihood of ever meeting a nice guy, someone like her old friend Saad, whose shoulder she cries on after every romantic misadventure. Her choices seem limited to narcissistic, adrenaline-chasing reporters who’ll do anything to get their next story—to the spoilt offspring of the Karachi elite who’ll do anything to cure their boredom. Her most pressing problem, however, is how to straighten her hair during chronic power outages. Karachi, You’re Killing Me! is Bridget Jones’s Diary meets The Diary of a Social Butterfly—a comedy of manners in a city with none.
6.) How It Happened by Shazaf Fatima Haider (Summary by Amazon)
Dadi, the imperious matriarch of the Bandian family in Karachi, swears by the virtues of arranged marriage. All her ancestors including a dentally and optically challenged aunt have been perfectly well-served by such arrangements. But her grandchildren are harder to please. Haroon, the apple of her eye, has to suffer half a dozen candidates until he finds the perfect Shia-Syed girl of his dreams. But it is Zeba, his sister, who has the tougher time, as she is accosted by a bevy of suitors, including a potbellied cousin and a banker who reeks of sesame oil. Told by the witty, hawk-eyed Saleha, the precocious youngest sibling, this is a romantic, amusing and utterly delightful story about how marriages are made and unmade---not in heaven, but in the drawing room and over the phone.
7.) A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Shazaf Fatima Haider (Summary by Amazon)
Intrigue and subterfuge combine with bad luck and good in this darkly comic debut about love, betrayal, tyranny, family, and a conspiracy trying its damnedest to happen. Ali Shigri, Pakistan Air Force pilot and Silent Drill Commander of the Fury Squadron, is on a mission to avenge his father's suspicious death, which the government calls a suicide.Ali's target is none other than General Zia ul-Haq, dictator of Pakistani. Enlisting a rag-tag group of conspirators, including his cologne-bathed roommate, a hash-smoking American lieutenant, and a mango-besotted crow, Ali sets his elaborate plan in motion. There's only one problem: the line of would-be Zia assassins is longer than he could have possibly known.
8.) Home Fire: A Novel by Kamila Shamise (Summary by Amazon)
Isma is free. After years of watching out for her younger siblings in the wake of their mother’s death, she’s accepted an invitation from a mentor in America that allows her to resume a dream long deferred. But she can’t stop worrying about Aneeka, her beautiful, headstrong sister back in London, or their brother, Parvaiz, who’s disappeared in pursuit of his own dream, to prove himself to the dark legacy of the jihadist father he never knew. When he resurfaces half a globe away, Isma’s worst fears are confirmed. Then Eamonn enters the sisters’ lives. Son of a powerful political figure, he has his own birthright to live up to—or defy. Is he to be a chance at love? The means of Parvaiz’s salvation? Suddenly, two families’ fates are inextricably, devastatingly entwined, in this searing novel that asks: What sacrifices will we make in the name of love?
9.) She Loves Me, He Loves Me Not by Zeenat Mahal (Summary by Amazon)
Zoella didn’t know whether she was devastatingly happy or happily devastated. Zoella has been in love with Fardeen Malik, her best friend’s gorgeous older brother, since she was ten, but he’s always seen her as a ‘good girl’—not his type—and he can barely remember her name. Besides, he’s engaged to a gorgeous leggy socialite, someone from the same rarefied social strata as the imposing Malik family. In short, Zoella has no chance with him. Until a brutal accident leaves Fardeen scarred and disfigured, that is. Suddenly bereft of a fiancée, Fardeen is bitterly caustic, a shell of the man he used to be, a beast that has broken out of the fairy tale world he once lived in. And a twist of fate lands him his very own beauty—Zoella. This man, however, is a far cry from the Fardeen of her dreams. Stripped of her illusions, Zoella creates her own twist in the fairy tale, beating him at his own game. Order now and read this modern, unusual interpretation of the old-age fairy tale, in which Zeenat explores the themes of love, longing, and arranged marriages.
10.) Undying Affinity by Sara Naveed (Summary by Amazon)
Twenty-two-year-old, Zarish Munawwar, has everything in life she could ever ask for; an elite family, a high profile status, a bunch of good friends and a childhood sweetheart. Being childish, stubborn, imperious, extravagant and a bit impulsive at making important decisions pertaining to her life, is what perfectly describes her overall personality. She takes life easily and can get anything she desires. To her, life is a bed of roses. It is only when she meets, Ahmar Muraad, her mentor and finance professor at university, her perspective towards life completely changes. He looks quite young for his age as every girl at the university thinks he is attractive, seductive, intellectual and rather intimidating. This charming man is every girl's fantasy and Zarish also finds it hard to resist him. But is he fascinated by her? Little did Zarish know how one little interaction could bring about so many twists and turns in her life. After continuous unsuccessful attempts to avoid him, she feels that she is gradually falling for his charm. Ahmar, however, remains oblivious to her feelings. She is ready to abandon her childhood sweetheart for him. Eventually, there comes a time when only he matters to her and nobody else. Awestruck by the sudden revelation, she is dazed to find out that he feels exactly the same for her. Before their love blossoms, a slight tragedy falls into their lives. Zia Munawwar, her father, has some other plans for his daughter. Will Ahmar fight against the world for his lady love or step back? Do not miss this romantic tragedy as it will encapsulate you totally and will stay in your heart forever

As the two look to the skies for answers, their fates entwine. 2. Words in the Dust by Trent Reedy
Winner of the Christopher Medal and a "heart-wrenching" Al Roker's Book Club selection on the Today Show.
Zulaikha hopes. She hopes for peace, now that the Taliban have been driven from Afghanistan; a good relationship with her hard stepmother; and one day even to go to school, or to have her cleft palate fixed. Zulaikha knows all will be provided for her--"Inshallah," God willing. Then she meets Meena, who offers to teach her the Afghan poetry she taught her late mother. And the Americans come to her village, promising not just new opportunities and dangers, but surgery to fix her face. These changes could mean a whole new life for Zulaikha--but can she dare to hope they'll come true? (Amazon.com)
3. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a breathtaking story set against the volatile events of Afghanistan's last thirty years - from the Soviet invasion to the reign of the Taliban to post-Taliban rebuilding - that puts the violence, fear, hope, and faith of this country in intimate, human terms. It is a tale of two generations of characters brought jarringly together by the tragic sweep of war, where personal lives - the struggle to survive, raise a family, find happiness - are inextricable from the history playing out around them.
Propelled by the same storytelling instinct that made The Kite Runner a beloved classic, A Thousand Splendid Suns is at once a remarkable chronicle of three decades of Afghan history and a deeply moving account of family and friendship. It is a striking, heart-wrenching novel of an unforgiving time, an unlikely friendship, and an indestructible love - a stunning accomplishment. (goodreads.com)
4. Swallows of Kabul by Yasmina Khadra
Since the ascendancy of the Taliban the lives of Mosheen and his beautiful wife, Zunaira, have been gradually destroyed. Mosheen's dream of becoming a diplomat has been shattered and Zunaira can no longer even appear on the streets of Kabul unveiled. Atiq is a jailer who guards those who have been condemned to death; the darkness of prison and the wretchedness of his job have seeped into his soul. Atiq's wife, Musarrat, is suffering from an illness no doctor can cure. Yet, the lives of these four people are about to become inexplicably intertwined, through death and imprisonment to passion and extraordinary self-sacrifice.
The Swallows of Kabul is an astounding and elegiac novel of four people struggling to hold on to their humanity in a place where pleasure is a deadly sin and death has become routine. (goodreads.com)
5. The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi
Afghan-American Nadia Hashimi's literary debut novel is a searing tale of powerlessness, fate, and the freedom to control one's own fate that combines the cultural flavor and emotional resonance of the works of Khaled Hosseini, Jhumpa Lahiri, and Lisa See.
In Kabul, 2007, with a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters can only sporadically attend school, and can rarely leave the house. Their only hope lies in the ancient custom of bacha posh, which allows young Rahima to dress and be treated as a boy until she is of marriageable age. As a son, she can attend school, go to the market, and chaperone her older sisters.
But Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great grandmother, Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life the same way.
Crisscrossing in time, The Pearl the Broke Its Shell interweaves the tales of these two women separated by a century who share similar destinies. But what will happen once Rahima is of marriageable age? Will Shekiba always live as a man? And if Rahima cannot adapt to life as a bride, how will she survive? (Amazon.com)
6. Shooting Kabul By N.H. Senzai
In the summer of 2001, twelve-year-old Fadi's parents make the difficult decision to illegally leave Afghanistan and move the family to the United States. When their underground transport arrives at the rendezvous point, chaos ensues, and Fadi is left dragging his younger sister Mariam through the crush of people. But Mariam accidentally lets go of his hand and becomes lost in the crowd, just as Fadi is snatched up into the truck. With Taliban soldiers closing in, the truck speeds away, leaving Mariam behind.
Adjusting to life in the United States isn't easy for Fadi's family, and as the events of September 11th unfold the prospects of locating Mariam in a war torn Afghanistan seem slim. When a photography competition with a grand prize trip to India is announced, Fadi sees his chance to return to Afghanistan and find his sister. But can one photo really bring Mariam home?
Based in part on Ms. Senzai's husband's own experience fleeing his home in Soviet-controlled Afghanistan in the 1970's, Shooting Kabul is a powerful story of hope, love, and perseverance. (goodreads.org)
7. Green on Blue: A Novel by Elliot Ackerman
Aziz and his older brother Ali are coming of age in a village amid the pine forests and endless mountains of eastern Afghanistan. They are poor, but inside their mud-walled home, the family has stability, love, and routine. One day a convoy of armed men arrives in their village and their world crumbles. The boys survive and make their way to a small city, where they gradually begin to piece together their lives. But when US forces invade the country, militants strike back. A bomb explodes in the market, and Ali is brutally injured.
To save his brother, Aziz must join the Special Lashkar, a US-funded militia. As he rises through the ranks, Aziz becomes mired in the dark underpinnings of his country’s war, witnessing clashes between rival Afghan groups—what US soldiers call “green on green” attacks—and those on US forces by Afghan soldiers, violence known as “green on blue.” Trapped in a conflict both savage and contrived, Aziz struggles to understand his place. Will he embrace the brutality of war or leave it behind, and risk placing his brother—and a young woman he has come to love—in jeopardy?
Green on Blue has broken new ground in the literature of our most recent wars, accomplishing an astonishing feat of empathy and imagination. Writing from the Afghan perspective, “Elliot Ackerman has done something brave as a writer and even braver as a soldier: He has touched, for real, the culture and soul of his enemy” (The New York Times Book Review). (barnesandnoble.com)
8. Caravans by James A. Michener
First published in 1963, James A. Michener’s gripping chronicle of the social and political landscape of Afghanistan is more relevant now than ever. Combining fact with riveting adventure and intrigue, Michener follows a military man tasked, in the years after World War II, with a dangerous assignment: finding and returning a young American woman living in Afghanistan to her distraught family after she suddenly and mysteriously disappears. A timeless tale of love and emotional drama set against the backdrop of one of the most important countries in the world today, Caravans captures the tension of the postwar period, the sweep of Afghanistan’s remarkable history, and the inescapable allure of the past. (barnesandnoble.com)
 9. A Cup of Friendship: A Novel by Deborah Rodriguez
From the author of the “bighearted . . . inspiring” (Vogue) memoir Kabul Beauty School comes to a fiction debut as compelling as real life: the story of a remarkable coffee shop in the heart of Afghanistan, and the men and women who meet there - thrown together by circumstance, bonded by secrets, and united in an extraordinary friendship.
After hard luck and some bad choices, Sunny has finally found a place to call home - it just happens to be in the middle of a war zone. The thirty-eight-year-old American’s pride and joy is the Kabul Coffee House, where she brings hospitality to the expatriates, misfits, missionaries, and mercenaries who stroll through its doors. She’s especially grateful that the busy days allow her to forget Tommy, the love of her life, who left her in pursuit of money and adventure.
Working alongside Sunny is the maternal Halajan, who vividly recalls the days before the Taliban and now must hide a modern romance from her ultratraditional son - who, unbeknownst to her, is facing his own religious doubts. Into the café come to Isabel, a British journalist on the trail of a risky story; Jack, who left his family back home in Michigan to earn “danger pay” as a consultant; and Candace, a wealthy and well-connected American whose desire to help threatens to cloud her judgment.
When Yazmina, a young Afghan from a remote village, is kidnapped and left on a city street pregnant and alone, Sunny welcomes her into the café and gives her home - but Yazmina hides a secret that could put all their lives in jeopardy. As this group of men and women discover that there’s more to one another than meets the eye, they’ll form an unlikely friendship that will change not only their own lives but the lives of an entire country.
Brimming with Deborah Rodriguez’s remarkable gift for depicting the nuances of life in Kabul, and filled with vibrant characters that readers will truly care about, A Cup of Friendship is the best kind of fiction - full of heart yet smart and thought-provoking. (Amazon.com)
 10. In the Sea There Are Crocodiles By Fabio Geda
What would you do if, when you were ten, you were left to fend for yourself, and, in order to survive, you had to undertake a harrowing journey all the way from Afghanistan to Italy?
In early 2002, Enaiatollah Akbari’s village fell prey to the Taliban. His mother, fearing for his life, led him across the border. So began Enaiat’s remarkable and often publishing five-year ordeal—trekking across bitterly cold mountains, riding the suffocating false bottom of a truck, steering an inflatable raft in violent waters—through Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, and Greece, before he eventually sought political asylum in Italy, all before he turned fifteen years old.
Here Fabio Geda delivers the moving true story of Enaiat’s extraordinary will to survive and of the accidental brotherhood he found with the boys he met along the way. In the Sea There Are Crocodiles brilliantly captures Enaiat’s engaging voice and humor, in what is a truly epic story of hope and survival, for readers of all ages. (barnesandnoble.com)

Did you ever think of how it could have been a ‘problem ‘ for ziam to be together regarding zayn’s Origin and religion. Or at least his family’s. But they look like they love Liam it’s cute ❤️ Not every Muslim is homophobic, I am not for example but you never know how a whole family can react. Anyway it seems to be fine that’s all that matters.
(I am sorry this is so late, I wrote a whole answer and Tumblr just ate it up)
I have actually thought about this a lot, because it's very important to me. I am South Asian, and that's one of the reasons I connected to Zayn so strongly.
I would look desperately for any kind of representation. Zayn tweeting about cricket and saying he had a crush on Katrina Kaif really sent me. But the more famous the band became, the more they white-washed Zayn. And no, that Bollywood dance on 1D Day doesn't really count. In fact, it was not until he left the band did he start giving us a glimpse into what his father's influences on him were. The Bollywood covers (😭😭😭 which are bomb, by the way), his love (passed on by his father) for Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music, the Bollywood-inspired riffs he would do, they are all things I hold dear. Hell, when I heard Intermission: Flower, I almost cried. Him saying Chhaiya Chhaiya is his favourite song, or that Devdas is his favourite movie, or Shah Rukh Khan his favourite actor ( mine too, by the way, he has good choice, what can I say? 😉)- we don't get to hear that much, do we, in the western media?
However, I am not Muslim, so I don't feel like it's my place to talk about your religion. But I would like to make one point: even my religion is not supportive of homosexuality. So, it's not really about religion, but people. There are homophobic people in every religion and people in those same religions that are accepting (like you and me), or maybe even a part of the LGBTQ + community themselves.
As for Zayn's family, as you so correctly pointed out, they really do love Liam don't they? Liam is the only person from the band that Yaser has a photo with, as far as I can remember. Liam went to Zayn's birthday party where his family was in attendance ( check out I Like Yoghurt School Monday's repost of I Like Your Skirt Mary's videos on YouTube) and his aunts posted pictures of Liam with captions like :"He couldn't get enough of us". Doesn't sound very unsupportive now, does it?
And a part dedicated to Yaser here, because I love their father-son dynamic so much and I am mad it doesn't get talked about a lot. You can very well tell Zayn has a lot of respect for his father and does care a lot about his approval. (He wanted to prove his dad wrong when Yaser wasn't sure he was right to leave the band). He has his name tattooed on him! 🥺❤️ Does he really sound like a son with a father who doesn't approve of who he is inherently? And it's very clear that Zayn is very close to his family in general, so I don't personally feel they don't accept him.
If the people closest to him love him for who he is, why does it matter what other people have to say? As we say here, Kuchh toh log kahenge, logo ka kaam he kahena. (rough translation: people will talk because they have nothing better to do)
Let me conclude this by including this post where Liam talks about Yaser and this video where Liam feels 'he's involved' when talking to Mr. Khan, a character from the sitcom Citizen Khan. And Karen and Geoff find it very funny. 😂
Thanks for letting me get this off my chest. Hope you have a good day! 😘

Nemesis // Soonwoo SVT
Summary: It was really laughable. The idea that Jeon Wonwoo had a nemesis. And yet there it was. The clear proof that all his life, like a nagging dull ache, Kwon Soonyoung had stepped all over his plans without ever really acknowledging him.
And maybe it was wrong for Wonwoo to seek him out but all he wanted was answers at first. He had never imagined they would stand opposite each other, fingers on triggers, his death in his nemesis’s hands and vice-versa.

Chapter 5: You can just date me
Tumblr media
Avoidance.
Soonyoung had woken up at the medical center to find the Dean, Mr. Lee Yu Jin, waiting for him.
“Ah, Kwon Soonyoung, is it? You had us all worried for a bit there, my boy,” Mr. Lee said, his smile not really warm.
Soonyoung tried sitting up and felt a drip attached to his hand pinch slightly.
“Oh, no need to greet me. Take rest. The nurse told me you’re exhausted. The second student from drama club to end up here in the past couple of days I have been told. As President, you should really tone the drama club activities down a bit. We don’t want our rising club to fail because of overwork, right, my boy?”
Soonyoung nodded slowly, not really understanding why the Dean was here at all.
“You all should have fun too. Rest, have fun, study, and so on. I must say, I would appreciate it if you don’t party at my house in the future.” Mr. Lee laughed, seeing Soonyoung’s panic at the revelation. “Don’t worry. I know my son, Chan, hosted the party. He doesn’t listen to his father at all.” He got up and handed Soonyoung his card. “Let me know if there is anything you need. I feel responsible for what happened on Chan’s behalf.”
“It’s no problem. He wasn’t involved,” Soonyoung said.
Mr. Lee muttered something that sounded suspiciously like “It would do him well to not get involved, for once.”
Soonyoung’s curiosity was piqued but he didn’t ask further.
Avoidance.
His friends asked him all sorts of questions. He chose to laugh it out.
“Really, I have no memory of what happened after entering the party. I had taken a shot of some weird tasting drink from Jihoon earlier so that must be it.” He laughed. “I really shouldn’t trust Jihoon’s wine cabinet from now on.”
Jihoon made a move as if to choke him. “Hey, my wine cabinet is exquisite, okay?”
Seungcheol laughed. “Didn’t you buy it off someone’s garage sale? It must have lots of expired items in it.”
“Wow, you had food poisoning? Cheol here nearly murdered a guy over your food poisoning, dude,” Junhui said.
Soonyoung’s smile dropped. Wonwoo. “You what?”
Junhui continued, “And that too when I was about to exchange numbers with that guy’s friend. Now, I have no date.”
Jihoon pushed Junhui. “Oi, priorities?”
Soonyoung tried to joke and smile again. “You can just date me, Junnie.”
Jun made a gagging sound. “I’m not that desperate, ugh.”
Joshua looked unconvinced by the banter. Soonyoung knew he wasn’t buying any of this. He also knew his friend had been crying. It hurt him to see the pale redness at the edges of Joshua’s eyes. He wanted to talk to him, to thank him…he didn’t.
Avoidance.
When he was fourteen, his therapist had told him he had trouble with facing his problems.
“Soonyoung, you can’t avoid your problems forever. Avoidance breeds toxicity.”
What was he supposed to say?
Facing his problems had led him here.
“Now, will you tell me what is bothering you?”
He didn’t.
Avoidance.
When he was discharged from the medical center and alone in his dorm room for a bit, he opened his inbox to see if he had contacted him.
There were several messages.
There were messages from his drama club members.
“Hey, I’m sorry you fainted. Hope you’re feeling better now, Hoshi. Wonwoo wouldn’t have hurt you. He’s a nice guy. He just looks scary.” --Seungkwan.
“Hoshi! Please get better soon. We need our Tiger back.” --DK
“Wonwoo got off on the wrong foot. He’s a friend. I’m sure he didn’t mean any harm.” --DK
And messages from random people.
“HEARD YOU GOT BEAT UP?”
“Are you okay?”
“You owe me 15 dollars! Don’t die yet!”
And calls from his parents.
He wondered who had told them. He sighed. There was a part of him that wanted to call them right now and tell them that he had been right all along. Jeon Wonwoo did exist. He was here in the university where he was studying. They, apparently, even had common friends. He wanted to shout and scream. He wanted to be comforted because he had been wronged all these years.
Instead, he messaged, “Mom, Dad, I’m well. Don’t worry. I’ll call in the morning.”
Avoidance.
Wonwoo was walking beside Mingyu as they made their way to the language building for their respective electives. The crowd was louder than usual today. There were still whispers but they seemed to be more about Wonwoo than Mingyu today.
Did you see him--yes, that one there--he beat up Hoshi--yes, the dark haired one--he beats up kids often--what’s Mingyu doing with him--oh, he even blackmails people--yes, he beat up Hoshi over nothing--the boy was hospitalized--he’s going to be expelled--his parents must be rich--he doesn’t even feel guilty--look at him--he beat up Hoshi--stay away from him--he’s a punk--poor Mingyu, for having such friends--he needs some sense knocked into--
Wonwoo tried to grin. “I don’t think you’re the center of attention anymore, Mingyu.”
Mingyu didn’t smile back. “They’re all so wrong. How can people spread lies like this?”
“You shouldn’t wander around with me or your reputation will get tarnished too.”
Mingyu slipped his hand around the crook of his elbow. “Then, let it.”
Minghao appeared from nowhere. His windswept hair suggested that he had been running. He wordlessly placed his arm around Wonwoo’s neck.
“What?” he asked, looking at both of his protective friends.
Minghao rolled his eyes. “At least Mingyu and I are just doing PDA. Seungkwan is fighting everyone and Seokmin is trying to get Hoshi to tell everyone you’re innocent.”
Wonwoo decided he liked the name Hoshi better. It didn’t knock the air out of his lungs every time it was uttered. Hoshi...he could nearly pretend Hoshi wasn’t Soonyoung.
Avoidance.
When Wonwoo had got a call from the Persian Department, he had been surprised.
“Wait, does that mean I’m in?” he had asked.
“Yes, someone backed out of the course. We have one seat open. Do you want it?” the clerk sounded just as bored on the phone as he did in person.
Wonwoo was beyond grateful. He didn’t have any elective as a back-up. “Yes, yes, I’ll take it. Thank you.”
“Come to the office and collect the syllabus and course materials.”
But when he dropped off his friends at their electives and finally reached Room 67, he was met by a commotion.
“What do you mean you gave my seat to someone else? How can you do that?”
Wonwoo frowned. What was happening?
The clerk was explaining coldly, “Your name was crossed out. There was one person in the waiting list so we gave it to him.”
“How am I supposed to find a new elective now? All courses are probably closed. Besides, I didn’t cross out my name. So, why should I suffer?” the student said.
“We can’t help you, I’m afraid. The other student was already informed--Oh, there he is! You can ask him if he can give you his seat? It’s really not my problem anymore.” The clerk yawned to emphasize his point.
The student turned around and his mouth dropped on seeing Wonwoo.
Wonwoo recognized him immediately and took a step back.
Soonyoung’s gaze went cold after the recognition. He closed his mouth and sighed, mumbling, “Of course, of all people...it had to be him.”
“H-Hoshi,” Wonwoo finally said.
“Never mind,” Soonyoung told the clerk. “I’m not interested anymore.”
“What is happening here?”
Both of them turned to look at the newcomer.
The clerk stood up quickly. “Oh, Professor Nusrat. Uh there has been a small misunderstanding.”
Professor Nusrat was middle-aged and stood remarkably straight. Her clothes were beautifully embroidered and complemented her nails and jewellery. She quirked an eyebrow and asked in a dangerously strict voice. “Really?”
Soonyoung was the one who spoke up. “This guy stole my seat for the elective and now I’m left without an elective even though I signed up earlier. The clerk refuses to help me now.”
Wonwoo gaped at him.
He stole so much from me. This is the least I can get back, Soonyoung was thinking, suddenly seething with anger. All those years spent searching and doubting himself. Those years, Wonwoo had stolen from him. And now suddenly, he was here stealing his life again. I’m not going to let this happen.
Wonwoo said, “Professor, I don’t know what his problem is but I got a call from the office that I got the seat. I didn’t steal anything.”
He was so annoyed. He had been patient with the rumours. No, he had been patient all along. He had avoided all the signs. He had patiently let go of everything that had been poisoned by Soonyoung but as the scar on his knee itched again, he couldn’t help but think no more, I’m not going to settle anymore.
Professor Nusrat looked at both of them. “Are you sure this is about the seat?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “Anyway, I didn’t know our elective was getting so famous suddenly. I can’t believe people are fighting to join it. Pleases me no end. You both can join. It’s not an issue.”
The clerk made a protesting noise.
Professor Nusrat repeated. “Not an issue. Come along. The class has already waited long enough because of the noise.”
There was, however, only one empty seat at the back of the class.
“Minseok, get a chair from my room. Woojin, come to the front. You both,” she said to Soonyoung and Wonwoo, “can take those two at the end.”
Wonwoo was making his way to the freshly vacated chair, followed by Soonyoung, when he tripped over someone’s bag. He grasped at air, feeling himself fall forward, eyes widening--
And then suddenly, he wasn’t falling anymore. A strong hand caught his arm and pulled him back. Still, unable to balance, Wonwoo fell slightly back, into Soonyoung’s chest.
He was already apologizing when he turned to look at Soonyoung and his heart seemed to clench almost painfully.
He was so close to Soonyoung, he could see the flecks in his eyes, the slight quiver of his lips forming a word, his breath catching sharply, the way his skin was reddening so perceptibly as he felt Wonwoo’s gaze upon him.
Someone coughed and now, Soonyoung was pushing him slightly.
Wonwoo regained his balance and wordlessly moved ahead. He knew his ears were burning hot, he could feel his heart hammering in his chest and there was an almost hysterical laugh building in his throat.
Because, in that moment when Wonwoo had stared back at Soonyoung, feeling him so close to himself, he had nearly done something he could have regretted later. He had nearly said, “You’re beautiful.” He had no idea where the thought had come from. It was certainly not his usually level-headed brain.
He was glad he had avoided the silly statement.
But he didn’t know.
He didn’t know that in another classroom, Joshua was tugging at his burning bracelet which was warning him of something.
Something that Joshua knew but tried to ignore, something that Soonyoung and Wonwoo still didn’t know.
Jeonghan was on the terrace of his dorm. He wondered when they would find out that no one could avoid fate.

Thank you for being so patient! Hope you enjoyed the update. The next chapter will have a few revelations so please look forward to it :)

I LOVE THIS SHOW. Spoilers under the cut, as usual.
1. LOL I thought the player screwed up and was showing me episode 1 again BUT WHAT. DJ!?!? 2. Aarav gives me such creepy vibes, so gooooooood 3. DJ's like what the fuck just happened, lol. 4. Wait, fuck, Nikhil didn't tell anyone about getting the notes retested, did he? No one else knows DJ's been setup so he can't get out and help the team find Nikhil...yikes. 5. Aw, Nusrat is worried, has she been crying? 6. Ah fuck, Naina and the child are here??? This is why I didn't want them to come here. 7. You really think he's gonna just turn the cellphone on? 8. What was in that smoke dude, Nikhil looks messed uppppp. 9. Oh! Nusrat and Naina talk. Ooooh. 10. Don't make promises you might not be able to keep, Nusrat. 11. "I understand, I know how you feel" ufffff, what happened with those two. 12. Did....did the killer arrange for some light reading material for Nikhil in his captivity? lol 13. "Aarav"'s voice is so creepy, it's excellent. 14. "Koi farak nahi padega" like father, like son. 15. OH! Was he a student of Nikhil's? This is excellent buildup. 16. You know why Nikhil didn't come, DJ. 17. Ooooh. Yes, Nikhil, piss him off into showing his face. 18. Ah, fucking hell. He's gonna threaten his family isn't he? 19. KNEW THEY SHOULD HAVE STAYED IN THE US. 20. This is heartbreaking, fuck. 21. Jesus Christ, I hope you and your dharam die a painful death, you fucker. 22. Omg, he wants him to kill her!? This is all kinds of fucked up. 23. I wonder if he's using a voice modulation tool. He sounds much older than 24 here. 24. Well fuck. Nikhil's way too good at this. 25. So she's dead? That means it's been over a week since Nikhil's been taken? 26. That's a leeeeetle convenient that he remembers the kid that clearly, but okay. 27. Oh his name is Shubh. Also Vishesh is SUCH a good actor. 28. Wait so Shubh was arrested? Did he get out or does he have a network? 29. Yup, THAT's why he wanted DJ in jail :D
Overall Thoughts: Love love love it, it plays on that morally gray area of what lengths would someone go to to save their family/what are you willing to lose etc. Great subject matter. And I *loved* Nikhil’s breakdown scene. It gets across the heartbreak of it all well.

Jeff Buckley, 30, Who Wrote And Sang Eclectic Folk-Rock
By NEIL STRAUSS
Published: June 6, 1997
Jeff Buckley, a folk, rock and pop singer and the son of the folk musician Tim Buckley, died on May 29 in Memphis, the police said. He was 30.
Mr. Buckley drowned while swimming in the Memphis harbor, said Lieut. Brenda Maples of the Memphis Police Department. His body was recovered Wednesday night after it was spotted from a riverboat.
Mr. Buckley and a friend had stopped by the harbor on their way to a rehearsal studio last week. Mr. Buckley was wading and swimming  when a speedboat passed by, creating a wake. The friend, Keith Foti, said he turned away to protect the pair's stereo and that when he looked up, Mr. Buckley had disappeared. The police and the harbor patrol searched for Mr. Buckley with helicopters, scuba divers and foot patrols.
His body was not found until a passenger on the riverboat spotted it floating in the harbor near the city's main thoroughfare, Beale Street.
Mr. Buckley was born in Orange County, Calif. His father, whom he remembered meeting only once, was an influential, eclectic and introspective folk singer who died of a drug overdose at 28 in 1975.
Jeff Buckley eventually settled in Manhattan, performing regularly in chatty, intimate sets (and sometimes washing dishes) at the small folk club Sine. His voice, at least as expansive as his father's five-and-a-half-octave range, his sense of humor and his good looks soon earned him a devoted following and a recording contract with Columbia, which released the four-song album ''Live at Sine'' in 1993.
In concert, his repertory ranged from Leonard Cohen and Van Morrison songs to material by Edith Piaf and the Pakistani Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
In 1994 Mr. Buckley released his first full album, ''Grace,'' which generated a minor hit, ''Last Goodbye.'' In the years that followed he performed on albums with the Jazz Passengers, John Zorn, Patti Smith, Rebecca Moore, Brenda Khan, Shudder to Think and Inger Lorre of the Nymphs and at concerts under such  whimsical aliases as Possessed by Elves, Crackrobats, Smackrobiotic and a Puppet Show Named Julio.
Mr. Buckley was in Memphis to prepare for his second album, which he was scheduled to begin recording on June 30. He had written some two dozen songs for it.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Guibert of Southern California, and a brother, Corey.

British court issues orders to unfreeze Shahbaz Sharif, son's bank accounts
Tumblr media
In a major relief for PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, a British court has ordered the unfreezing of the Opposition leader's bank accounts and those belonging to his son, Suleman Sharif Monday.
The decision was taken by the court after the UK's top anti-corruption body, the National Crime Agency (NCA) concluded there was no evidence of money laundering, fraud and criminal conduct against the two, according to evidence seen by The News exclusively.
The Westminster Magistrates Court’s Judge Nicholas Rimmer set aside the two accounts freezing orders (AFO) against Shahbaz Sharif and his son related to a December 2019 case filed by the NCA at the Pakistani government's request.
The UK's top anti-corruption agency filed a unilateral application before Judge Rimmer to declare that its two-year high-profile investigation in the jurisdictions of Pakistan, UK and Dubai found no evidence of money laundering and criminal conduct on part of the two Sharifs who were investigated.
Documents obtained by The News reveal that the bank accounts of Suleman Sharif were frozen and Shahbaz Sharif’s accounts were probed through a December 17, 2019 court order and both were subjected to high-profile criminal forensic investigation under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 (POCA), conducted by the NCA’s Investigations Command at the International Corruption Unit.
Their accounts were frozen after the Pakistan government asked the UK to “assist in the recovery of criminal assets to the state of Pakistan”, triggering a wide-ranging investigation.
NCA probes Shahbaz. Suleman's accounts After the Westminster Magistrates Court allowed the accounts to be freezed and issued a probe consent to the NCA on December 19, 2019, Suleman Sharif’s declared Barclays account, Shahbaz Sharif’s HBL UK and Barclays account were immediately probed, seized and monies frozen.
This correspondent has seen court evidence which shows that the NCA’s investigators sought consent from Shahbaz Sharif to have access to his closed Barclays account as well or else the account will be accessed through a production order. Shahbaz Sharif agreed to the consent on the advice of his lawyers.
Usually, anti-money laundering investigations go back only six years, but in this case, the NCA used its excessive powers and investigated Shahbaz Sharif and his son's transactions dating back to around 20 years. NCA's investigators started the probe from the first flat that Shahbaz Sharif bought in 2004 on Edgware Road when he was in exile and asked him to produce evidence of the clean origin of the money, including mortgage payments, sources of proceeds in his accounts, salaries and dividends, and full proceeds of the property purchase in the UK, bought during exile.
The NCA investigated Suleman Sharif’s Barclays account declared in Pakistan with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and looked into all transfers which were made from Pakistan after the State Bank of Pakistan’s approval. The NCA went through each receipt of transfers from the official money exchangers.
The court documents obtained by this correspondent from credible sources show that the NCA received a letter from the ARU on December 11, 2019, in which it levelled allegations of criminal conduct against Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman Sharif.
The government of Pakistan had requested the UK government to seize all assets and funds of Shahbaz Sharif and his family, and asked them to return the same to Pakistan and extradite Suleman Shehbaz with his family.
The Home Office was in the loop and a separate letter was sent to the Home Office requesting Suleman's extradition, as well as asking Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) ministry to probe Suleman.
Court papers show that two AFOs were issued by the Westminster Magistrates Court on December 17 for 12 months in case numbers 011902628734 and 011902628947.
A year later, on December 8, 2020, the NCA went to the court again, applying to extend both AFOs for six months, arguing that investigations were continuing in the UK, Dubai and Pakistan. According to court papers, Suleman Shehbaz agreed to the extension of the AFOs by the court on three applications filed by the NCA.
No evidence of money laundering or fraud On September 10, 2021, the NCA submitted a unilateral application to the court informing that its investigations had been completed and the NCA crime investigators had found no evidence of money-laundering, fraud or wrongdoings in any of the transactions made either from Pakistan to the UK or from the UK to Pakistan in Suleman and Shahbaz Sharif's accounts.
District Judge Nicholas Rimmer signed the final order setting aside the AFOs, releasing and returning the accounts and monies to Suleman Shehbaz and his father.
According to a chronological order of the sensitive investigation - kept under tight wraps by the Sharifs, the NCA and the Pakistan government - a senior director of the NCA’s International Corruption Unit met Shehzad Saleem, Director General of NAB Lahore, in London on December 9, 2019 to discuss the formal investigation against Shahbaz and Suleman Sharif.
According to court papers, Shehzad Saleem explained to the NCA that Shehbaz Sharif’s wealth began to accumulate when he and his brother Nawaz Sharif gained prominence in the 1980s. The implication being that they were receiving bribes and other kickbacks because of their influential position.
The NAB Lahore official told the NCA official during their Central London meeting that Sharifs’ used the hawala system to transfer monies to make them clean and to legalise such transactions. He told the NCA that NAB’s investigation had identified a large number of remittances to bank accounts of the family, allegedly from Pakistanis living abroad.
It is therefore the NAB’s case, he told the NCA, and that the remittances are the laundering of illicit funds by, or on behalf of, Shahbaz Sharif and family, according to court papers.
The ARU's letter This correspondent has reviewed the letter of December 11, 2019 from the ARU to the NCA explaining why Shahbaz and Suleman Sharif should be investigated and what action should be taken. The ARU told the NCA that Shehbaz was wanted in Pakistan, under investigation, on bail, and a person of interest for misuse of authority during his tenure as chief minister Punjab, namely in his involvement in the Ashiana Housing scheme case and Hamza Sugar Mills case.
The Assets Recovery Unit (ARU) said in the same letter that Suleman was the “principal accused and beneficiary of the fake international remittances and money laundering through front and paper companies”. The Pakistani government's letter to the UK’s anti-corruption agency alleged that its investigation revealed that Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman “patronised a local network of front companies in the name of their low paid employees to launder their proceeds of corruption to show as legitimate money” and that both had “used informal money transfers (hawala) to shift and conceal their money abroad”.
The Pakistan government further told the NCA that the Panamagate investigations had “already culminated in sentences to Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz Sharif and others from the accountability court and these cases are presently pending with the Islamabad High Court in the appellate's jurisdiction.
It mentioned that investigations by NAB are presently underway for “corruption and organised money laundering” in relation to various members of the Sharif family, including Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar, Nusrat Shahbaz, Suleman Sharif and mainly family members of Shahbaz Sharif for “money laundering “through companies owned by Shahbaz’s family members.
This correspondent has seen the full file which the NCA placed before the Westminster Magistrates Court in order to get the freezing orders (AFOs) issued against Shahbaz Sharif and Suleman. The NCA bundle went into detail to describe Shahbaz and his son as being allegedly involved in criminal conduct through misuse of authority and associated money laundering.
t relied on several newspaper clippings which carried allegations of money laundering, quoting Pakistan government ministers and their press conferences.
Attached in the bundle was also an article by David Rose for the Daily Mail which had been published on July 13, 2019 in which the paper alleged that Shahbaz had stolen the UK government funds.
The article carried the same allegations of money laundering that the ARU later on submitted before the NCA, asking the UK to rely on the article for its investigations.
The NCA gained AFOs and probe consent order for violations contrary to sections 327, 328 and 329 of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002, involving criminal offending contrary to conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office and conspiracy to cheat the public revenue; concealing criminal property; acquisition of criminal property; use and possessions of criminal property; and fraud by false representation and fraud by abuse of position.
No case for 'recoverable property', says NCA The NCA lawyers, requesting freezing orders for 12 months, added: "This will ultimately allow us to prove or disprove if these funds in whole or part, constitute recoverable property in that they are derived from criminal conduct or intended for use in unlawful conduct."
The NCA application, quoting the allegations made by the ARU, said that it needed 12 months because it will conduct enquiries internationally.
Credible legal sources here shared that the grounds of suspicion on which the NCA filed its application in the Westminster Magistrates Court to secure freezing orders were not proven as the investigations in multiple jurisdictions couldn’t establish evidence to prove money-laundering and criminal conduct.
That is the sole reason, according to sources, why the NCA gave it in writing to the Westminster Magistrates Court that its investigations had established that there was no case for the “recoverable property”, hence the unfreezing of assets and closure of the case file.
Reports of Shahbaz being acquirred incorrect, says Shahzad Akbar Meanwhile, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar said that reports of Shahbaz Sharif being acquitted by the British court were incorrect, clarifying that neither had the ARU nor NAB requested the UK government to initiate a probe against the PML-N leader.
He said the inquiry had been initiated over a "suspicious transaction" that a bank had reported to the NCA, adding that these consisted of certain funds transferred by Suleman Shahbaz from Pakistan to the UK in 2019.
"[These transactions] were declared as a suspicious transaction by the UK authorities and the NCA secured an asset freezing order(AFO) from the court against these funds," he tweeted. "However, recently the NCA decided to stop investigating these funds and therefore agreed for the release of these funds through the court.
"It is clarified that such a release order is not an acknowledgement that funds are from a legitimate source," he added. The prime minister'a aide said that Shahbaz and Suleman have not been acquitted since they had not been tried to begin with.
"The funds were frozen by the NCA and the NCA has decided to not investigate these funds anymore," he added. "Suleman Shahbaz remains a fugitive in a money laundering case against him and his father before the AC Lahore," he added.
PMLN Secretary Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said the UK court decision has unequivocally exonerated Shehbaz Sharif and his family of all malicious and vexatious claims of corruption and money laundering.
Responding to Shahzad Akbar’s tweet, she said the NCA UK conducted a 21-month global investigation spanning 20 years whilst overcoming unprecedented jurisdictional challenges.
She said never in the history of Pakistan has a public office holder ever been subjected to global scrutiny and multi-jurisdictional probing as Shahbaz Sharif had been.
Marriyum said the government's false corruption narrative was exposed, adding that it was telling a hundred more lies to cover up thousands that it had already told.
She said the government will fall on the weight of its own deceit and lies.
