Kenny Wheeler's Masterpiece: "Music for Large & Small Ensembles"
Introduction:
In the realm of jazz composition, few names command as much respect and admiration as Kenny Wheeler. Released in 1990 by ECM Records, “Music for Large & Small Ensembles” stands as a monumental testament to Wheeler’s prowess as a trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and, above all, a brilliant composer. At its core lies “The Sweet Time Suite,” a composition of extraordinary depth and…
“I like you a lot,” Atmos says, casual as ever, “will you marry me?”
“Yeah.” Winston says. “Yes, yeah, of course.”
He reaches over, intertwining their fingers, laughing all the while, “just like that? No pomp and circumstance? Not going to get your crew to set me up for a surprise? No Cyph calling me portside for a, quote unquote ‘important meeting?’”
Atmos shrugs, reaching down to sift through his pocket, “We can set off some fireworks if you want.”
Winston laughs, “No, no this is- this is good.”
Atmos produces a small, red ring box. He opens it to reveal a simple silver band with a slight point. Five tiny gems catch the light. Winston takes it.
Atmos closes the box with a snap and sets it aside, letting hym study the little, precious thing for a moment.
“Just like that,” Winston whispers. Tears slip down his cheeks.
Atmos gently takes the ring and slips it onto his finger, closing both his hands around it and pressing a kiss to hys knuckles. Winston blinks fast as more tears come.
💛 Hey there, 27 female writer from Germany here, trying to get back into roleplaying!
I write in first person, so please only interact if you’re okay with that because it’s getting both hurtful and tiring to be let down because of that. Personally, I don’t mind if my writing partner writes first or third pov, as long as we match in length and enthusiasm for our ship.
I would describe myself as literate, but there still might be mistakes every once in a while due to English not being my first language. I am happy to provide you with an excerpt of my writing if you wanna check that our writing styles match beforehand! I write on Discord and will only roleplay with you if you’re 18+, preferably even 21+.
That being said, nsfw is not a must but appreciated - yet what I never want is porn without plot. If you are into writing smut, please note that I write all of my characters as doms and most of them as bisexual.
Below I will list fandoms and ships I am into. Bold fandoms will be the ones I am into the most right now, bold characters will be the ones I want to write in said ship.

Norma Jean Greene was a secretary from North Carolina. She was divorced at the time of her fatal abortion. It is unknown if her ex-spouse was the baby’s father.
After her legal abortion, Norma suffered severe complications and was hospitalized at NC Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. She went into cardio-respiratory arrest and died at 9:55 P.M. on March 16, 1981.
The autopsy discovered that she’d suffered pulmonary embolism and myocardial infarction/coronary as side effects of the abortion.
Janet Sherbourne & Mark Lockett - Mythical Stomp - from their 1987 DIY cassette Walks Abroad, now reissued by contala (on cassette)
As discussed elsewhere here, Janet Sherbourne is a total cult artist, talked about in hushed tones by music obsessives from Tokyo to Portland to Stockport. Her work across late night art-ballads, systems music, gamelan, latin jazz and synth pop has appeared in fits and starts from the 80s till now on various privately issued tapes LPs and sevens. On this tape from 1987 she joins regular collaborator Mark Lockett for a slightly more jazz-oriented set.
The whole thing brings to mind a DIY take on the 80s Norma Winstone sides on ECM or perhaps the oddball ambient cabaret of Freestyle by Karin Krog. That being said, this really couldn’t be anyone else, all the singular weirdness and charm of her previous projects is still very much in evidence.
The dead-calm, blossoming accordion patterns on the first track Lazy Haze are a stunning start. From there a palette is established: Satie-esque piano, glassy DX7, skippy electronic drums, more of that accordion and Janet’s driven-snow vocals.
Possibly it's my age, but fm synthesis, drum machines with their controls set to jazz and subtly weird cod-American-songbook lyrics awaken something in me. The residue of a memory of the house bands of Wogan or Pebble Mill at One, of pastel sets and plastic jewellery, of absorbing the bad vibes of my friend’s mum’s messy divorce, of Ghostwatch.
Whatever it is, this tape lands me straight in a very particular strand of warped late-80s English hyper-reality that lurks at the base of my brain and I can’t get enough. Regardless of my own particular aesthetic quirks, as more of her catalogue becomes available, and more facets of her music present themselves, it becomes abundantly clear Janet is a true original.

Sending this in again because unfortunately so far there has only come one (1) roleplay from this and I’m sick with Corona and have a lot of time on my hands, hope that’s alright! 💛

Marlene Dietrich in The Scarlet Empress (Josef von Sternberg, 1934)
Cast: Marlene Dietrich, John Lodge, Sam Jaffe, Louise Dresser, C. Aubrey Smith, Gavin Gordon, Maria Riva. Screenplay: Manuel Komroff, Eleanor McGeary, based on a diary of Catherine II of Russia. Cinematography: Bert Glennon. Art direction: Hans Dreier. Film editing: Josef von Sternberg, Sam Winston. Music: W. Franke Harling, John Leipold,
The Scarlet Empress may be the silliest movie ever made, and never sillier than when Marlene Dietrich, her hair done up all in curls, pretends to be innocent and naive by opening her eyes wide beneath her penciled-in eyebrows. Now mind you, I have nothing against silliness; some of of my favorite movies are silly, like Bringing Up Baby (Howard Hawks, 1938), which may be the silliest great movie ever made. (Or the greatest silly movie, depending on which way you come at it.) So I love The Scarlet Empress, for all its outrageous camping-up of 18th-century Russia with cartoon icons and ubiquitous gargoyles -- the greatest of which is Sam Jaffe's grinning idiot of a grand duke. But we all know that Catherine II didn't earn the sobriquet "Great" just by sleeping with her soldiers (and perhaps some of the horses we see clattering up the palace staircases in the movie). So you really have to suspend a lot of disbelief and accept Josef von Sternberg's film for what it is: an outrageous parody of the historical epic, the sort of thing that people were expected to take seriously when, for example, Norma Shearer played Marie Antoinette for W.S. Van Dyke four years later. If The Scarlet Empress was a box office failure at the time it was because audiences weren't keyed in to the joke. Now we are, so we can revel in Hans Dreier's febrile vision of a Russian palace and the music arrangers' delirious pastiche of Tchaikovsky mingled with Mendelssohn and laced with a bit of Wagner's Valkyries (for when those horses are galloping through the halls).
