National Orchid Day
With their intricate blooms, orchids bring beauty and elegance to any setting, making them a versatile addition to any collection.
With more than 28,000 species, the orchid is a unique and interesting flowering plant that occurs worldwide. More than 200 species reside in North America, and many others can be found in hotter, more tropical climates. With their large, amazing blooms that often have curious shapes, orchids offer a complex range of beauty and color to the plant world.
National Orchid Day is here to celebrate this dazzling flower, as well as the challenging story of the family that inspired it all.
History of National Orchid Day
Although this is certainly a day to recognize and appreciate the beauty of this unique flower, National Orchid Day actually has an emotional story behind it as well. The day was established by a couple named Mike and Faith Young, who fell in love with the magnificent flower while volunteering at an orchid preserve on the outskirts of Chiapas, Mexico.
Later, when they were pregnant with their first daughter, they decided to name her Orchid in honor of their experiences with the beauty of this delicate plant. Sadly, baby Orchid did not make it through the birth process. From that time in April 2014, the Young family looked for ways to find beauty from tragedy.
The founding of National Orchid Day is one of the ways that the Youngs, along with their friends and family, have kept the memory of their little girl alive while, at the same time, bringing respect and attention to this amazing flower.
Take some time to observe National Orchid Day to show appreciation for this special flower as well as the special people in your life.
How to Celebrate National Orchid Day
Celebrate and enjoy National Orchid Day in a wide variety of ways, including some of these ideas:
Get or Give an Orchid
Flowering plants can add a particular kind of joy and delight to homes and orchids are no exception. Those who want to share in the allure and elegance of this special flower might want to consider getting one from a garden store and bringing it home. Or, even better, give an orchid as a gift to a beloved friend or family member in honor of National Orchid Day.
Show Care to Loved Ones
One special way to observe National Orchid Day might be to simply take the time to show friends and family members how much they are loved and appreciated. Since the day was founded in honor of a lost family member, it’s an especially poignant time to give an extra hug and say “I love you”.
Learn More About Orchids
Take some time on National Orchid Day to learn some more about this special flowering plant. Get started with some of these facts:
Orchids are believed to be one of the oldest families of flowering plants.
This magnificent plant has the tiniest seeds in the plant world.
Orchids can take from 5-7 years to bloom once started. Some bloom for months and others only hours.
The vanilla bean comes from a species of the orchid plant family.

The Orchid by David Van-Cauter The end of term, a long, dry spell. Someone gave you an orchid with seven flowers. On the mantelpiece, each pink head seemed to loll its tongue, its mouth wide open, holding its breath, clinging to the stalk that drooped to the left. We fed the orchid, watered it, and then the good news came. The image showed us nothing more than a tiny dot, but you kept it by your bed, kissed it at night. We encased our secret, spent those hot days trying not to spill, every day another notch on the strained barometer. A hosepipe ban, and the garden was crying long, dry tears. It took six weeks for the first flower head to fall and the rain to come: the garden spread out like a swan, its wings drinking the air. #nationalorchidday2019 #nationalorchidday #orchidday #orchids #poems https://www.instagram.com/p/BwVEHjNjNKJ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6bayuihxh7yb

I’m a little late for #nationalorchidday but I did want to take a moment to appreciate some of my orchids like this one, anoectochilus chapaensis. I purchased a few new orchids back in February at what was the first (and sadly seems like the last for now) orchid show of the season. The majority are jewel orchids. I love their leaf patterns and metallic colors! I’ve kept them all in my makeshift bubble dome (two clear plastic salad bowls) and they’ve been doing seemingly ok. I could do to air it out a bit more but other than that they seem to enjoy their little bubble life. #plantsincolor :: :: :: :: :: :: #apartmentbotanist #jewelorchid #nybg #orchidshow #plantparent #anoectochiluschapaensis #anoectochilus #orchid #orchidsofinstagram #leafpatterns (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_FG-ESg9u3/?igshid=9kogrqyfbgro

National Orchid Day
National Orchid Day is observed annually on April 16th.  According to Wikipedia, Orchidaceae is a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colourful and often fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants, with between 21,950 and 26,049 currently accepted species.
Orchids are beautiful and extremely special. The creators of National Orchid Day, Mike and Faith Young, volunteered at an orchid reserve in San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico in 2010 and the experience changed their lives forever, so much that they decided if they were to ever have a daughter they would name her Orchid- inspired by all the unique expressions and delicate beauty of the flowers.  On April 16, 2014, sadly they lost their precious daughter during labor, her name is Orchid Faith. Since then, they have been desperately trying to find ways to honor her life.
After looking to see if there was an existing National Orchid Day they found there wasn’t. On the year anniversary of losing their precious little girl, they created a Kickstarter campaign offering pre-orders of their backyard honey (The Humble Bumbles Honey) with the goal of designating April 16 National Orchid Day through the Official National Day Registrar. Within the first day, they met their goal and the campaign brought in over $1,500. Thanks to the generosity and kindness of many friends, family, and supporters April 16 will now forever be National Orchid Day in honor of their daughter. For the rest of their lives, Mike and Faith say they will be caring for and spreading awareness about orchids. They feel that having a National Orchid Day dedicated to the beautiful life they lost, orchids will be appreciated a little bit more, and their little girl will feel the warmth of those that think of orchids that day. They feel as though all orchids are a representation of their little girl and hope that this special day will inspire those who come across orchids to possibly think of her too; it is within you and all of us that she is alive.
Also, for Mother’s Day 2015 Mike had a Cattleya orchid be designated and named the ‘Radiant Faith’ orchid through Chadwick and Son Orchids, Inc. and officially registered and recognized by the International Orchid Register of the Royal Horticultural Society in England. The name was inspired by the color company Pantone’s color of the year for 2014 (the year they lost their daughter) – Radiant Orchid.
